Kyungsooās knees threatened to go weak with relief when the gangsters opted to play along with his little ruse. The absolute last thing that he wanted was for Chanyeol to get tangled up in his mess. If he had it his way, Vanguard wouldnāt even know of his flatmateās existence, but apparently that was already shot to hell. All Kyungsoo could do was pray that the men didnāt think too much into his guestās appearance.
His hands curled against the cracked countertop as he watched the three men file out of the bakery, knuckles white and hands beginning to tremble as the adrenaline began to fade from his system. He didnāt have the courage to look at Chanyeol even though the other remained next to him as the thugs made their exit.
A tense sort of silence fell between them as they watched through the front window as the men rounded the corner and disappeared from sight.
It was as if the moment that the immediate danger passed, all of the panic and terror that Kyungsoo had been stubbornly keeping in check came crashing down around his shoulders. He didnāt even notice Chanyeol moving to lock up the store-- his vision had finally gone dark around the edges and the pain in his chest was crippling. It was all Kyungsoo could do to keep himself upright as he curled a hand over his chest as if the gesture would somehow help ease the crushing tightness in his chest.
This was another secret that heād managed to keep from his flatmate for weeks. Kyungsoo feared Chanyeol discovering his condition just as much as he feared him becoming entangled in Kyungsooās mess with Vanguard. It had been years since Kyungsoo had any sort of real companionship, and the last thing he wanted was to put the other man in danger for his own mistakes-- but he was just as terrified to see pity in Chanyeolās gaze after he learned just how defective Kyungsoo really was.

Kyungsoo was so focused on the three men in front of him that he didnāt even hear the telltale creak on the steps as Chanyeol came downstairs. Normally, Kyungsoo could tell the moment that the giant was up from sounds of him moving about upstairs, but today heād been so distracted by his visitors that he hadnāt heard so much as a peep.
He almost startled right out of his skin at the easy greeting from his house mate. Casting an uneasy glance at the gangsters standing opposite him, Kyungsooās gaze reluctantly shifted back to Chanyeol. He attempted a smile. āGood morning,ā he greeted, voice stilted despite his best attempt to sound normal.
His pulse quickened as he watched Chanyeol pluck the bankerās envelope right out of one of the mobsterās hands. Instinctively, he snatched the envelope back before one of the cronies decided to pull a gun on either of them. āItās a new service,ā he lied, shoving the money at the nearest thug with an uneasy glance at the trio. āConvenient, right?ā
He prayed that the other boy didnāt pick up on the uneasy tremor in his voice. Kyungsooās heartbeat was hammering in his ears now and his chest was beginning to feel uncomfortably tight. His vision was even going a little fuzzy around the edges.
He had to get the men out of the cafe before they could cause anymore trouble. He couldnāt risk dragging Chanyeol into the middle of his mess.
āThank you for coming to pick up the deposit personally,ā he suddenly said to the thugs, voice a little too loud and a little too sharp. Judging by the tension in the room, no one was about to call him on it, āThatās all I have for today. Iāll be sure to make time to bring the deposit by myself next time.ā He forced a tight smile. āIām sure you gentlemen have better things to do with your time.ā
He was so busy cursing out the offending beam that it took him a while to register the voices coming from the bakery, only catching the question at the very end. Ā But it was enough for Chanyeol to shut his mouth and immediately press against the wall to hide from sight.
Because Chanyeol knew from experience that nothing good ever came from that question and he was not about to get in the middle of whatever shit his temporary roommate was involved in.
Kyungsoo swallowed thickly, his pulse hammering in his ears as he numbly knelt before the tiny safe he kept below the service counter. He heard the rustle of fabric and knew that two of the men had reached for their weapons the moment that he disappeared behind the register and, despite the fact he kept nothing in the safe more threatening than a roll of quarters, he made sure to keep his movements slow and deliberate. Unfortunately, Kyungsoo wasnāt sure he would ever get used to being on the wrong end of a gun and so he couldnāt help the way his fingers trembled as he fumbled with the safeās combination.
āIām not gettinā any younger here, kid,ā the first thug taunted, still leaning against the counter. He plucked one of the business cards from the neat pile beside the register and began to scrutinize it. āDo you do birthday cakes?ā he flipped the card over, inspecting the back, āYāsee my neice has this thing coming up and--ā
Before the man could finish, Kyungsoo finally felt the safe handle give beneath his grip and wrenched the tiny door open. He made quick work of retrieving the bankerās envelope inside and straightening, throwing it on the counter before the the three mobsters.
āItās all I have,ā he declared, doing his best to stand tall and keep his voice stern. āTake it and go.ā
It was never that easy. The spokesman of the little group fixed Kyungsoo with a look before tossing his card aside and reaching for the envelope. With practiced ease, the man unzipped the envelope and began leafing through the bills tucked inside. When his gaze lifted, it was woefully unimpressed. āYouāre gonna have to do better than this, Kyungsoo.ā He handed off the envelope to his companion without breaking eye contact. āThis barely covers your interest. The boss aināt gonna be pleased.ā
Itās been a slow day at the bakery. But then, lately, most are. Elysium Bakery is but a shadow of the business that it used to be without Kyungsooās grandma at its helm. He might have learned to bake from the woman, but unfortunately making a mean strawberry mascarpone isnāt enough to pay the bills. Kyungsoo doesnāt know the first thing about crunching numbers or handling his books. Thatās what got him into this mess in the first place.
It isnāt a surprise to see the three men slink into the empty bakery shortly after Kyungsoo has opened Elysiumās doors for the day. They come weekly now, like clockwork. Today theyāre dressed as conspicuously as ever in their thick leather jackets and sunglasses. Their hands are adorned with gaudy rings of gold that are as practical as they are eye-catching. Kyungsoo knows first hand just how long a bruise inflicted by a fist curled around those rings can take to heal.
He watches warily as they approach.
āSmells good in here, kid,ā the frontman says, lips twisted into a mimicry of a smile as he reaches the counter. āToo bad I donāt see any customers here to appreciate your little cookies.ā
Kyungsoo flinches back a step when the manās hands suddenly slam on the counter. The mobster leans his weight against the chipped countertop and peers up at him with faux-sympathy. āSales arenāt lookinā too promising, Kyungsoo. But yāknow Iāve still gotta ask. You got my money?ā

Jongsuk was hardly surprised when Hyunwoo cut him off.
He cast the whiskey one last, longing look, before letting his flat gaze shift back to the man in front of him. Instinct had him reaching for Hyunwoo to curl a hand beneath the shorter manās elbow when he almost lost his footing in the puddle of scotch that Jongsuk had so carefully avoided. He didnāt think twice about such casual contact.
Hyunwoo didnāt seem to notice either way. Instead, he was busy working himself into a full-blown rant, making Jongsuk feel as if he were right back in high school. He barely felt the swat to his arm as Hyunwoo batted his hand away from the bottle of whiskey waiting for him on the counter.
The finger jabbing into Jongsukās chest did catch him off guard though. It had been years since anyone had the gall to lecture him so blatantly, and even longer since anyone had dared to touch him so casually. His guards were as taken aback as Jongsuk felt. From the corner of his eye, he saw the men straightening and reaching into their jackets, and Jongsuk quickly held up a hand in their direction.
He shot the pair a look and shook his head in dismissal.
If Hyunwoo noticed, he didnāt show it. His rant continued on undeterred. What he was actually saying went completely over Jongsukās head. There were too many medical terms for him to bother following. He might have been able to if heād cared enough to try, but Jongsuk was instead letting himself be distracted by the familiar fire in the other manās eyes.
(Later, heād blame that moment of weakness on the blood loss).
Itās only when he felt himself being maneuvered backwards and shoved back into his seat that Jongsuk realized Hyunwoo might not be too far off base with all of his fretting after all. As much as heād like to pretend that he had allowed the smaller man to herd him back towards the bar stool, Jongsuk honestly hadnāt had much of a say in the matter at all. Once his weight was settled on the stool, his vision began to blur at the edges, the sudden wave of vertigo making his stomach churn uncomfortably.
Head hung, breaths carefully controlled, Jongsuk barely noticed Hyunwoo crowding in close and reaching for the buttons of his shirt.
Jongsuk continued to sit impassively in his place behind the desk, eyes tracking Keyās movements as he edged towards a chair, perching carefully on its edge. Much to his amusement, the dealer immediately began to fidget in a tell-tale sign of nerves. For a moment, Jongsuk simply watched Keyās fingers drum an anxious beat against his knee.Ā
His lips then curled into a small, sharp smile.Ā
āI trust I donāt have to tell you when our supplies are running low, Key,ā he replied, voice cool and even and giving absolutely nothing away. Jongsuk tilted his head as if in thought.Ā āUnless you have something else on your plate thatās demanding your attention?ā
He reached for a folder neatly waiting on the corner of his desk and pulled it closer to him, settling back in his chair and flipping it open with a practiced flick of his thumb. The way that Jongsuk was currently seated, Key had no hope of catching a glimpse of the folderās contents, and there was no visible label on the cover to give him so much as a hint.Ā
Jongsuk took his time scanning the page in front of him.Ā
āI amĀ concerned with our recent numbers, however. A three-percent drop in sales is nothing to ignore.ā His gaze lifted to meet Keyās.Ā āIām eager to hear an explanation.āĀ
The bomb goes off, and you can hear it from your home miles away. It shakes the city and stirs the sky. You find yourself watching as the flames erupt, lost in the fire and the confusion from the safety of your windows. But the door bell rings and when you open you find a box. Its gift wrapped like a treasure, decorated in black wrapping and a glistening red bow. There is no one nearby, so you take the package, cautious, and open it inside. Under the lid is a head, a fellow wolfsbane member you had known, with a corpse of a snake beside. You get the message, loud and clear. The cottonmouth will rise. Now is your time to actāgather your weapons and meet on the battle ground. Take the lives of those who have taken your members and restore the honor of the wolfsbane. Succeed and this city may soon be yours, fail and you will fall to the hands of the cottonmouth.Ā
There is a seamless panel of windows that spans two walls of Jongsukās penthouse apartment, showcasing the skyline of Seoul; tonight, that skyline is burning. The blaze of the city casts the apartment in flickering hues of orange and gold that catch on the crystal of the chandelier and fracture, dancing across marble counters and polished wood as if they too are burning. Smoke rises thick from the heart of the city. Its inky fingertips have yet to reach high enough to obscure the chaos in the streets from view, but the ground shakes as another explosion rocks the city. It will not be long before Seoul is choking on ash and soot.Ā
Inside the apartment, Jongsuk stands at his desk with a map of the city spread across its surface. The office is a flurry of arguments. In the corner, two weapons dealers are hashing it out, crunching numbers as they decide just how much of their stock Wolfsbane can afford to sacrifice. There are three others gathered around the table with Jongsuk, marking key locations on the map, places that Wolfsbane cannot afford to let the snakes overrun.Ā
Jongsukās phone buzzes from where it rests on the edge of the map. He reaches for it absently, too focused on the red circle being drawn around the cityās main power plant to spare it a glance just yet. He nods in approval of the newest addition.Ā āWe canāt let them get control over the cityās power. Blacking out Seoul is the quickest way to shut the city down.āĀ
He hears murmurs of consent around him as he finally checks his phone. A lone text awaits him. Thereās no name attached and the number is blocked, but Jongsuk knows all too well who the message is from. Chaeyoung was never one to waste words, after all.Ā
[Ā ā incoming sms; blocked idĀ ] Handle it.
Jongsuk tosses his phone back on the desktop with an annoyed curl of his lip. He ignores the looks he receives from the others gathered around the table and turns his attention back to the map. Continuing as if nothing at all had happened, he snatched the red pen and made a heavy circle around City Hall, tapping the butt of the pen against the mark as he lifted his gaze to meet everyoneās gaze in turn.Ā āThis is where everything began. Theyāll seize the building to make a statement.ā Jongsuk drops his gaze back to the map.Ā āWeāre not going to give them the chance.āĀ
The sound of the doorbell ringing sends the room into sudden silence.Ā
Shooting a look at the guard nearest the office door, Jongsuk nods once, sending the man to go investigate. He dismisses the disturbance as an annoyance and intends to return to laying out a strategy to defend the city, but thereās a strangled sound from the next room that interrupts Jongsuk before he can finish his thought.Ā
With a huff of irritation he straightens, slapping the pen in his hand on the desk before moving around it and heading for the living room. Heās flanked within moments, guards drawing their weapons, fingers already poised over triggers in preparation for whatever may await them in the entryway.Ā
What awaits them is the guard, holding a black gift box, looking like heās going to be sick any moment.Ā
Jongsukās brow furrows.Ā
The guardās head rises as the room begins to fill. His eyes immediately seek out Jongsuk, and his jaw works as he holds the secondās gaze.Ā āSir. You... itās for you,ā he says, somber and tripping over his words, his unease completely out of character for the usually dauntless man. That alone is setting off all sorts of warning bells in Jongsukās head as his guard hefts the box higher and slowly closes the distance between them.Ā
Jongsukās jaw tightens as the man stops in front of him. He continues to hold the box out in offering-- or maybe itās disgust? as if heās dutifully holding it but keeping it as far away from himself as he can even so-- and Jongsuk holds his gaze a moment longer before reaching out to lift the lead.Ā
āBe careful,ā the guard blurts suddenly, shifting the package away from Jongsuk. āThereās-- youāll see. Just be careful,ā he finishes lamely, shoulders slumping before he moves the box back within reach.Ā
The reaction leaves Jongsuk narrowing his eyes, the warnings ringing in his ears near deafening now, but he pointedly turns his attention back to the box. He lifts the lid an inch, then two. When he catches sight of its contents he steps closer and yanks the lid off completely.Ā
It falls to the ground a foot or so away, forgotten.Ā
For a second, Jongsuk forgets how to breathe. He forgets how to draw breath into his lungs, how to expel it, how to relieve the sharp pressure in his chest. All he sees is crimson. The packaging is stained with it. Blood coats the waxen tissue paper, drenching it, rendering it sodden and sloppy.Ā
A human head rests carefully nestled in the center of the bloody gift wrap.
Thereās a shout of outrage from somewhere behind Jongsuk. He hardly hears it, the roar in his ears too loud as he reaches out on auto-pilot, fingers brushing over a still-warm forehead, pushing aside a shock of dark hair to get a better look. The guard hisses something at him, but Jongsuk doesnāt register it. Heās too busy studying the face staring unseeingly up at him.Ā
He knows this face.Ā
It is-- was-- one of his. Itās one of the boys that Jongsuk had plucked from the streets with the promise of a hot meal and steady work. He was a kid-- sixteen, seventeen at best. He was a kid, and he was just doing what he had to do to survive. He still could have turned things around. He his whole life ahead of him to figure it out.Ā
His hand has started to shake when Jongsuk takes notice of the snake nestled in the corner of the packaging. Its body is loosely coiled and its head rests on the edge of the bloodied tissue paper. Jongsuk only tenses for an instant. Anger overwhelms common sense and he grabs the snake by the head without a second thought, fingers tightening in an iron grip as he lifts it straight from the box.Ā
The guard holding the gift box startles and stumbles back a step. His grip on the package slips, but he doesnāt let it hit the ground, clutching it closer in an instinctive effort to correct his grip. The severed head inside is jostled with the motion and the guard groans as if heās going to be sick soon.
The serpent hangs limp from Jongsukās grip. It was dead before it was ever placed in the box. Now that his brainās had a chance to catch up with his body, Jongsuk reasons that it had to be if Cottonmouth wanted to ensure that the head arrived on his doorstep in mint condition. With a disgusted scoff, he throws the snake aside and turns to face a second guard.Ā
āGet word out,ā he grinds out, voice carrying without having to be raised. No one in the room dares to make a sound.Ā āWe move now.āĀ

Jongsuk kept his expression carefully controlled as he watched Hyunwoo swallow thickly, the mask covering the other manās face hiding his own expression from view. Not that it mattered. Hyunwooās eyes were just as expressive now as they were eight years ago.Ā
He was wrestling with something. If only Jongsuk could figure out what it was.Ā
He remained impassive as Hyunwoo neared, holding his ground, doing what he thought was an excellent job of keeping his thoughts to himself. Judging by the scowl furrowing Hyunwooās brow, he wasnāt too far off.Ā
After a brief staredown, Jongsuk allowed himself to be led towards a bar stool. He made sure to avoid the mess of spilled scotch, though heād be a dirty liar if he didnāt admit to sending the puddle of expensive liquor a mournful glance. It was a shame to see such a good scotch go to waste.
It was also safer to focus on the mess of spilled liquor rather than the hand curled around Jongsukās wrist. He would stubbornly ignore how cool Hyunwooās fingers were as they pressed against his pulse, because if he didnāt, heād get lost in his head again. Heād remember pinning those hands against crisp hotel linens as he sank into welcoming heat, would remember them scrabbling at his back and leaving marks that stung for days. Heād remember them carding through his hair as Jongsuk half-listened to the late night Batman reruns on tv. Heād remember those hands waving him off from the other end of a skype call, shooing Jongsuk to class one last time.Ā
No. No, it was definitely safer to focus on the scotch.Ā
āI need a drink,ā Jongsuk abruptly declared. He rose from the stool that Hyunwoo had just pushed him into and made to circle around the counter, intent on the brand new bottle of whiskey waiting for him on the bar shelf.Ā
Itās an old idiom, one that Jongsuk heard countless times as a child and one that heās found himself remembering often as of late. It really shouldnāt come as a surprise to anyone that he first heard the saying from his mother. It was one of many lessons that she drilled into Jongsukās head as a kid. Oddly, it was perhaps one of the ones thatās stuck with him the most in the years since.Ā
Because as it turns out, details loveĀ to screw you over.Ā
Take tonight, for instance. Out of all the things that demanded Jongsukās attention, heās forced to attend to this mess before he can move onto a single one of them--because someone fucked up a simple job.Ā
The clean up should have been an easy in and out. There shouldnāt have been a bit of fuss. All the crew needed to do was dispose of a body and splash a bit of bleach around an apartment already crawling with rats and festering with filth, and whatever evidence was left at the scene would have been compromised. After that, they only had to toss the apartment and steal whatever valuables they could find (if any, Jongsuk recalls wryly), and the upstanding members of the SPD would have been none the wiser to the events that had transpired in that shitty little rooftop apartment.Ā
Unfortunately, Jongsuk is dealing with imbeciles, and the job wasnāt finished before the police arrived on the scene. And rather than finishingĀ the job, two of the punks ran with their tails between their legs and disappeared into the woodwork. One of Jongsukās boys was left at the scene to take the fall.Ā
Unfortunately, Jongsuk expects the kid to start singing like a canary any minute now, and he needs to see to it that thereās a distinct lack of evidence to support his involvement in the hit. He wasnāt about to trust one of his lackies with to clean up this particular mess, not now. So here Jongsuk stands, wasting his Wednesday night in some SPD techieās apartment, waiting for the guy to get out of the goddamn shower because Jongsuk is hardly in the mood to blackmail someone while theyāre cornered and naked in a bathtub.Ā
He can see the appeal, of course. He just isnāt in the mood for games.Ā
Jongsuk waits until the man is towel drying his hair to make his presence known. He steps out of the shadows, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his immaculately pressed slacks, thumb tracing the familiar curve of the switchblade resting in his right pocket. He lets his lips quirk into a ghost of a smirk.Ā āDid you remember to clean behind your ears?ā he drawls, voice lacking any hint of inflection, eyes as sharp as the blade hidden in his pocket.Ā
Jongsuk knew that his company had arrived long before he heard the knock sound against the door. The moment that Key had set foot inside of Palladium, the front desk rang to inform Jongsuk of his arrival. It gave the young CEO plenty of time to finish up the document he was currently reading through. By the time that the knock sounded, heād just finished endorsing the last of the papers and was adding them to the neat stack on the corner of his desk.Ā
His eyes raised when the door clicked shut behind his visitor.Ā
Jongsukās expression remained impassive, carefully controlled, revealing nothing of his amusement as he watched the other man cross the room in a few powerful strides. Despite the certainty of his steps, Key was doing his best to avoid meeting Jongsukās eyes, keeping his own trained to the floor in a textbook display of submissiveness. Not that Jongsuk believed for a second that there was anything submissive about the man standing on the other side of his desk, of course.Ā
That was part of the problem.Ā
He sat back in his chair, eyes narrowing as he scrutinized Key. Key was useful; he knew his trade and was business savvy, his tongue as sharp as his wit. The problem was that he was also becoming unpredictable. When news had reached Jongsukās ears of his dealerās budding relationship with a certain Cottonmouth dealer... Well, it was sufficient to say that Jongsuk was far from thrilled.Ā
Jongsuk folded in his hands in front of himself, thoughtful.Ā
āI did,ā he finally replied, toneless. He offered no further explanation, choosing instead to let Key squirm for a bit longer. He allowed the silence to stretch heavy between them. Jongsuk found that allowing a personās nerves to loosen their tongue was sometimes a rather effective way to get the ball rolling. Of course, he doubted that Key would make things that easy for him, but for now he was content to sit back and wait.Ā
Behind Key, the two guards flanking the entryway closed the heavy doors with a snap.Ā

Wolfsbane Members :Ā Iāll be posting a solo for the event soon in which Jongsuk rallies Wolfsbane to take to the streets and fight. Jongsuk himself will be joining in the fray. Primarily, theyāll be focused on fighting Cottonmouth, leaving the SPD to deal with civilians and damage control-- but their ultimate goal doesĀ align with SPD. They must prevent Cottonmouth from seizing the city by any means necessary.Ā
What this means:Ā
Iāll be posting a few event-specific plots that will be up for grabs (may be multi-muse).Ā
Currently, Jongsuk will be open to limited plottingĀ for this event. As you might have noticed from my tracker, Iāve got an influx of new plots in the works and I want to be sure I can manage all of them reasonably before I take on many more.Ā
You can ignore Jongsukās call to battle, use it for your own plot inspiration, talk to me about future plots-- whatever you want. I just wanted to touch base with you guys!
