Without a single muscle in her face twitching in thought, her body responds. She rises in one smooth, unhurried motion, as if the air beneath her arms has become dense enough to lift her weight. She stands perfectly still, her hands limp at her sides, her chest rising and falling in the exact, slow rhythm of his own breathing.

He slowly releases his grip on her chin. She doesn’t move. The command to stay is already written into her nervous system. He begins to pace a slow, deliberate circle around her kneeling form, the gentle rustle of his cloak acting like a metronome, ticking away the last remnants of her outside thoughts.
