🌊“The candy taken away”
I know it's not the best photo.
No real story, no context.
Just a corner of the coastal city
where I first became me.
That building,
painted in colors amid the gray,
reminded me that beauty often hides
in the ordinary.
I captured it in my final days there.
After three long years of waiting,
I closed the door to that dorm room—
and with it, an entire chapter of my soul.
I cried.
Not for the things I left behind,
but for the part of me
that chose to stay.
I returned with a tired body
and boxes full of memories.
But the woman who came back
was no longer the one who left.
I shattered.
Mind and body,
as if my soul had refused
to make the journey home.
It wasn’t just missing friends or a partner.
It was grieving an entire life,
a hard-earned freedom,
an identity built from the ground up.
For the first time,
I was me.
And I had to let her go.
Nine months have passed.
Three in treatment.
I had to gain six kilos—I'm working on it.
But the soul weighs more than the body
when it’s broken.
Crying over a move sounds silly
to those who’ve never left.
But I did.
And now, I belong nowhere.
Suspended between two worlds
that no longer claim me as theirs.
They miss me there.
They miss me here.
But I’m only an echo,
a fading shadow of who I used to be.
They move on.
I remain still.
I’ve dreamed of going back.
Promised myself a visit when I’m better.
But no one knows—until now—
that I’m afraid.
Because going back to Arica
means starting the countdown to leave again.
It’s like giving candy to a child
only to take it away.
And I don’t know if I’m strong enough
to face that heartbreak twice.
There’s so much more I want to say,
but my chest tightens
and I fear I might cry—
in the wrong place,
where no one knows
I’ve cried myself to sleep
every night for the past nine months.
They think pills and work fix everything.
And maybe they help.
But not enough
to mend the wounds
of a heart still searching for home.

Me quebré.
FĂsica y mentalmente me deshice,
como si el alma se hubiera negado
a cruzar los mismos kilĂłmetros.
No era “extrañar” a un novio o a unos amigos.
Era extrañar una vida entera,
una libertad aprendida,
una identidad construida desde cero.
Por primera vez,
fui yo.
a quienes nunca partieron.
Allá me extrañan.
Acá también.
Pero soy un eco,
una sombra del personaje que conocieron.
Ellos siguen.
Yo me quedé varada.
He soñado con regresar.
