Art is meaningless without an audience? Are you serious? My personal vent art that i create for therapy is meaningless because no one is seeing it? All the sweet little sketches people do for themselves in their journals are meaningless because there's no audience giving commentary?
Hi, thank you for asking! I know my opinion is controversial, and I had a few discussions about it with my friends irl, but I firmly believe in what I said.
The answer depends on what we consider art, and this is a question without a correct answer. For me, art is a statement—something you want to share, or, in the case of fanart, express love or maintain a "dialogue" with the creator of the original work. You can do it into the void, and it will probably still remain a statement, but it won't be complete without a response—positive or negative. It's a hackneyed example, but hey, Van Gogh spent his whole life trying to convey love and emotion through his paintings, and he suffered from the fact that people never understood it.
Vent art for therapy, little sketches that no one sees—all of that is important in its own way. We're not robots after all, we all have a need to express ourselves. I just can't fully call it "The Art", I believe that the essence of art does not lie in this, at least not entirely. It doesn't mean that drawing for people is good, and drawing for yourself is bad, it means that true art is born when these two goals meet. Realist artists who depicted social problems, social injustice, and the everyday life of ordinary people in their paintings clearly weren't painting only for themselves, they wanted to change society, and this would have been impossible without an audience and public resonance. That's why we see their artworks in museums and art history textbooks. Sorry, but I can't put them on the same level with drawing in a sketchbook for yourself.
And I'm not saying I'm the new Van Gogh, great Artist with a capital A or anything like that, lol, of course not. But I draw so that people can see what I'm drawing, and when they see it—I'm happy. When they don't see it—well, I still spent a few good hours drawing, but I still didn't achieve my goal, and that's called "meaningless."
That's how I define art. If you think it's valuable in itself, you draw for yourself, enjoy the process, and don't need an audience—I get it too, I respect that. That's also a valuable perspective on art. I also believe that a small sketch in a sketchbook for yourself with love is worth more than some work that has an audience, but into which the author put neither meaning nor emotion. But I could never agree with this point of view and accept it for myself fully. I even envy those who completely adhere to this point of view, people just enjoy drawing and don’t have to worry about whether the algorithms will be favorable today, haha.
But I believe that art deserves an audience. Paintings in museums exposed for everyone who is willing to look at them. Theater seats should not be empty. Music should be listened to. Otherwise, we would live in complete silence, where everyone talks to themselves.
