âSe prohiben las despedidas para siempre.â Nieve Guerra, 8 años.
TODOS SE VAN. Director: Sergio Cabrera. Año: 2015.
Iâve always had this idea that in fight films, the dominating image is the clenched fist. Iâm not a violent personâI wouldnât even know how to fightâbut the idea of a clenched fist is a very aggressive symbol, and a symbol of male violence. At the same time, itâs an extension of male sexualityâa phallic symbol. So the gesture is a combination of sex and violence. When you open your palm, thereâs submission, and I felt like there was a movie going from a closed palm to an open palm. Of course, other elements had to be added in to underscore that concept, and it also became a mother-son movie. - Nicolas Winding Refn

Meet the New Auteur: Alonso Ruizpalacios, Director of GĂEROS
In this playfully energetic debut, three pranksters embark on a road trip adventure to pay their last respects to a musical hero.
What films inspire you? Everything from WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (my first cinematic love) to Kurosawa - any Kurosawa - heâs my favorite filmmaker of all time. I doubt we will see films as epic and, at the same time, as humane as his. He was the Shakespeare of cinema. Having said that, for this film, we watched a lot of Fellini and the French New Wave. In particular, I VITELLONI, LA DOLCE VITA, VIVRE ĂA VIE and, of course, BREATHLESS. One of this filmâs strongest influences, though, was a 1970s Mexican gem called LOS CAIFANES, which is also a road movie inside Mexico City (written by the great Carlos Fuentes).
What was the biggest challenge in making your film? I donât think weâve passed the biggest challenge yet. Every time we think weâve made it to the next phase, something - some force of nature, some piece of bad news - comes along and makes everything more complicated again, threatening to drag us down. Itâs all to do with the financing, as always. Weâve been to so many pointless meetings with people who said they liked our âlittle filmâ but could see âlittle or no revenuesâ coming from it. When we won the Best First Feature in this yearâs Berlinale and later in San Sebastian, people started to pay more attention. Still, itâs all state-funded as of now, and we got a lot of our friends to work on it for peanuts.
What do you hope AFI FEST audiences will take away from your film? Above all, GĂEROS is a love letter to my hometown Mexico City - this broken, endlessly sprawling, terrifying and absolutely beautiful mess of a place. So I hope audiences travel with the same sense of openness as the wide-eyed TomĂĄs, and maybe let themselves be taken on a journey back to the pains and joys of youth.
See GĂEROS at this yearâs AFI FEST

âThey run into the street to flag down a passing bus and take the back seat, elated at their victory. However, in the final shot, Benjaminâs smile gradually fades to an enigmatic, neutral expression as he gazes forward down the bus, not looking at Elaine. Elaine first looks lovingly across at Ben but notices his demeanor and turns away with a similar expression as the bus drives away, taking the two lovers towards a future of uncertainty.â
The Graduate (1967).
Cidade de Deus
This is my favourite movie: âBacheha-Ye Asemanâ - Children of Heaven.
So simplistic, beautiful and humble.Â
Este es el tipo de cine que quiero hacer. PelĂculas que tengan mucho corazĂłn.

âYou will feel so homesick that youâll want to die and thereâs nothing you can do about it apart from endure it.But you will, and it wonât kill you.And one day the sun will come out.You might not even notice straightaway, it will be that faint. And then you will catch yourself thinking about something or someone who has no connection with the past, someone whoâs only yours, and youâll realise that this is where your life is.â
La Gente de la Universal (1993)

Nick loved a girl I was pretending to be. âCool girlâ. Men always use that, donât they? As their defining compliment: âSheâs a cool girlâ. Cool girl is hot. Cool girl is game. Cool girl is fun. Cool girl never gets angry at her man. She only smiles in a chagrined, loving manner. And then presents her mouth for fucking. She likes what he likes, so evidently heâs a vinyl hipster who loves fetish Manga. If he likes girls gone wild, sheâs a mall babe who talks for football and endures buffalo wings at Hooters. When I met Nick Dunne I knew he wanted âCool girlâ. And for him, Iâll admit: I was willing to try. I wax-strippe my pussy raw. I drank canned beer watching Adam Sandler movies. I ate cold pizza and remained a size two. I blew him, semi-regularly. I lived in the moment. I was fucking game. I canât say I didnât enjoy some of it. Nick teased out in me things I didnât know existed. A lightness, a humor, an ease. But I made him smarter. Sharper. I inspired him to rise to my level. I forged the man of my dreams. We were happy pretending to be other people. We were the happiest couple we knew. And whatâs the point of being together if youâre not the happiest? But Nick got lazy. He became someone I did not agree to marry. He actually expected me to love him unconditionally. Then he dragged me, penniless, to the navel of this great country and found himself a newer, younger, bouncier cool girl. You think Iâd let him destroy me and end up happier than ever? No fucking way. He doesnât get to win. My cute, charming, salt-of-the-earth Missouri guy. He needed to learn. Grown-ups work for things. Grown-ups pay. Grown-ups suffer consequences.

âWhen you were born and I learned that you could hear⊠Do you remember? I cried and cried. I could never bear the hearing. Itâs your dad who comforted me. He told me âDonât worry! Sheâll be deaf in her mind. Weâll raise her like a deaf girl! Maybe if weâre lucky she wonât hear a thing.â And now, youâre singing?â
