CWD prions exist for 16 years after a deer dies, and persist in the environment for 16 years after the animal decomposes. The disease can also be transmitted through any shared eating or drinking space, and the uterine layer of unborn deer.
Saving existing herds and preventing total population collapse will be a primary goal for the CDC and Northern American epidemiology for the next fifty years and will require extensive support. The National Deer Association is attempting to arm hunters, Americans, and Canadians with information about the disease and attempt to slow its spread until future research can provide a solution.
