5 TOP TIPS
FOR A SHINY COAT
A shiny coat is the sign of good health in your equine partner. Here are my top 5 basic, easy and cost effective tips and tricks to help get that extra shine.
1. Good feed - it’s important that your horse gets good nutrition in order to get a shiny coat. This doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Generally, horses will thrive off good quality hay alone.
2. Oil - if you’re feeding, it’s worth adding a squirting or 2 of oil into your horse’s feed. Oil is a god send and is cheap and easy to get from your local supermarket. It adds extra calories to help maintain weight in the cooler months and it also has added fat for that extra shiny coat. Its best if you an get an oil with omegas in it. Rice bran oil is the best, but it can be quite expensive in australia. I find that sunflower oil is excellent too, otherwise corn oil/vegetable oil is fine.
3. Rugging - keep your horse rugged in a breathable fabric (such as cotton or wool etc). This will keep the coat clean, flat/sleek in appearance and will eliminate any sun bleaching that happens in the hotter months (as someone who mainly owns black horses, I know how gross and yellow their coats can go in the summer if not protected!!)
4. Grooming - grooming your horse every day is so so good for them. It promotes blood circulation, it’s a massage to help work out any tension and it promotes the natural oils in your horse’s coat to come out and give your horse that added shine.
5. Coat sprays - I would avoid using show sheens from your local tack store too regularly as it can cause a greasy build up on the coat. However, it’s worth mentioning that fractionated/liquid coconut oil is non greasy and a diluted mix is ideal to spray on your horse each time you groom them.
I’d encourage others to reblog this post to help our our fellow equestrian community and please feel free to add any other tips and tricks for a shiny coat.
I use Premier Equine Rose Conditioner - it’s a spray on conditioner with no silicons in it so doesn’t dry the hair out. I spray all over the body, mane and tail after every ride and it leaves the coat so shiny, smooth and soft!!
I have a few tips to add myself!
1. Paprika: If you find that your horse has a dry, brittle, dull or sun bleached coat he might have a copper deficiency. Paprika is an excellent source of copper! My horses coat has definitely improved since introducing this to his feed and I know a few people with very dark horses who swear by this. I’ve also heard it helps with arthritis but I’m not 100% positive. A word of caution! - for those of you who regularly compete and would like to try this, make sure to stop feeding this 2 weeks before competitions as it does test positive at shows due to its capsicum content.
2. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS): BOSS are high in fat and omega fatty acids, which like oil, adds a shine to a horses coat and condition if their diet is lacking.
3. Rug Rubs: My biggest problem with Fudge is undoubtedly rubs! Through trial and error I would recommend either adjusting how the rugs fit, or buy a bib. If buying a bib, buy one that fits your horse with satin on the outside (so the satin is in contact with the rug and not the horses skin). This tip has honestly been a life saver!
Fantastic guys, keep the tips coming :) xx
FYI: A warm up does not constitute leading your horse from the barn to the ring, hopping on, and immediately going to sitting trot.
when u run as fast as u can and your horse is like nyeeeerrrrr

My face when people say their horse doesn't need flatwork
Bless my mum~ <3
Got down to pon today with the mindset I wanted to ride. Got out of the car and it was blowing an absolute gale and I started to straight away doubt riding her.
Mum was like what’s going to go wrong?
So the plan was tack her up, see how jumpy she was and then decide from their. We got her ready and surprise surprise she was so quiet she was falling asleep.
So you know we got to the point where I was on the step to get on and starting to have a mid panic attack and mum stopped me and was like, hey lets just focus on our breathing and I shit you not it completely calmed me down, and I got on straight after it like their was no problem.
She then walked around with me for a little until I told her I was feeling fine (also the poor thing was having trouble waking on the uneven ground) and just sat and watched me and we chatted.
SHe even made the cutest comment about how missy was looking so good and that she was collecting and it looked really good. Ah my goodsess my mum is so lovely and I am so lucky to have her.
We just bummed around after that and grazed her and stuff but I had such a lovely time and feel so confident with myself.
If you are ever panicking about getting on your horse, or just life in general this is what we did.
Slowly breath in and count to 4
Hold your breath and count to 4
Then breath out and count to 4
Mum explained that when we panic are breathing becomes shallow and our brain perseveres that as a flight mechanism so it goes along with it and things just become worse. So if you focus on breathing slowly and calming yourself down in this way it tells your brain, hey man it’s okay.
It might not work for you but it did make me feel so much better and I defiantly will keep it in mind for next time.
p.s mum worded it much better haha
This was how excited she was for her walk
Had the best walk with moo today
We went down the side of her new *temporary* paddock and towards all the other paddocks on the side of the property and we were stumped cause the bridge that is meant to get us across is a giant pile out of the ground now and I 100% did not trust walking over it haha
BUt she is so amazing holy snit
What a model

Windy days at the pon
Perfect pon
A fall from two feet can cause permanent brain damage. A horse elevates a rider eight feet or more above ground. A human skull can be shattered by an impact of four to six miles per hour. Horses can gallop at forty miles per hour

Moo has been so good
I have lunged her today and on Friday and omg,
She was so god right out on the end of the lunge line, stretching down, forwards trots and just being a perfect girl.
I just love that big idiot <3 \
Also it was sprinkling today and it was really pleasant to work her in it.
You know when you try to guide your horse to the best patch of grass but they don’t want to go because they’re content with the less adequate grass under their feet? Yeah well remember that next time someone tries to give you advice. Sometimes an outside perspective can lead you to better and brighter things, and you may just want to listen.
