You know what? It was maybe not life-changing but it definitely makes your life easier and I have the perfect exemple for that.
The other day I was getting some groceries and I went to the self checkout as usual because somehow, in my grocery store, thereâs one regular cash register with a cashier and a shit ton of self-checkouts (an issue for another dayâŚ)
Itâs my regular store so I recognize the workers, and even if I donât I always smile and say hello because hey, human decency you know?
Next to me was an old lady that was already there when I arrived and I could hear that she was struggling to scan her items, so I point out VERY NICELY âoh missus, look, I think you already scanned this one âşď¸â and the lady just SNAPPED and started shouting âyou think Iâm stupid?!â to what I reply âabsolutely not, I apologize, I just wanted to helpâ. She shouted back âMind your own business sir! or miss, with you youth you canât know anymore!â (Iâm a woman but I have short hair. I donât really care if people misgender me sometimes, especially since I look kinda androgynous when I donât have makeup and Iâm wearing baggy clothes, but the tone she had? Oh it was full of disgust).
I leave her be, a bit startled but sure, okay, grumpy old lady. Not my circus not my monkey. Then an employee noticed her struggling again and approached her, offering some help and she shouted AGAIN âdonât touch my things! Get away from me!â Me and the employee exchange a WTF look. She grumbles about âa store full of assholesâ.
My self-checkout freeze, I turned around and politely ask the employee for help. They help. I say thank you, I pay, i say goodbye, I leave.
Mind you, she had perhaps half the number of items I had, probably less. She was there way before me, she was still there when I left.
Being polite, smiling at people, makes life significantly easier.
(âŚBut I hope the old hag stayed stuck for a long time after I left.)
