The first time I read this as a kid about 7/8 years ago, I didn't understand the ending. I was upset that I didn't get to see more glimpses of the future, or know for sure of every detail. At 21, Elise's monologue and Ana Sofia's last line tell me more than enough. A beautiful ending for a beautiful story that has inspired me for years. Someday, I hope to write something that will have the same impact on others that it had on me. It was the first time that I felt truly represented.

As a black, bisexual, sort-of-girl, I felt lost among the stories of mainly straight white characters. Lyanna, Kayla, and Jeff were pivotal to my development. Jeff reminds me of my dad, who also played basketball, and seeing him do Lyanna's hair in the background of a chapter made me feel so seen. He was also funny, kind and smart like my dad is too.

Lyanna was nerdy like me, goofy, and hyperactive. I wouldn't do as well in an apocalypse as she did, but that was my girl. Seeing her and coach together felt like home. I would say I looked up to Kayla's strength and kindness, and I was a little jealous that she was cool and tall.

Takao was also the first time I saw a trans gestational parent represented in a casual, respectful way and that opened my eyes.

I love all the other characters too, but it was actually Elise that was my favorite. I'm not infected, but her insecurities, memory issues, and her fierce love for her brother and friends really spoke to me. Also, she was a badass. How could I not love her?
