henrietta was born to a poor family in london, so to find work as a maid of an aristocratic family at age 13 was considered great luck. the girl had always been hard-working, learning quickly, but her first employers did not necessarily appreciate her talents.
she found rather quickly that the household that had employed her cared little for their help. they could be cruel, were rather uncaring, and paid little, but little was better than nothing, so henrietta stayed.
at age 17, she had lost both her parents to influenza, the family too poor to afford medicine, or doctors. shortly thereafter, she met the new stable boy of her lord and lady, mr. oliver wilson. they fell in love quickly, and eloped. though theirs was a happy union, it was not one with a happy ending, for only 7 years later, poor mr. wilson passed away, leaving hetty a widow.
due to her grief, she had slipped up with her duties, and subsequently got fired form her position as housemaid. but oh, that was just when her life was about to at last take a turn for the better.
for viscount bridgerton had taken a wife, the new viscountess, and so they needed staff to man their new marital home. henrietta was first hired as a lady's maid to violet herself. she spent a lot of time around the new viscountess, and quickly learned that the girl was kind, that she was caring.
during the day, henrietta worked her hands to the bone, and at night, she taught herself how to read, write and count - ashamed by a conversation she had with violet where she was forced to admit she had never read a book. years later, after the old housekeeper of the bridgerton house retired, she had become the obvious successor, and had been managing the household ever since.
