The place where Jeremy Brett intersects most with Sherlock Holmes is in the generosity of both men. Jeremy enjoys giving parties, passing around the champagne, surprising luncheon guests by paying the bill and leaving before anyone catches him doing it. He has gifted roses to both men and women, and he gave the authorship of “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes” to his co-author, Jeremy Paul.
Likewise, Sherlock Holmes, who takes enormous pride in his cases and the trapping of his villains, gives the credit for his cases to Lestrade and the police.
“On the contrary,’ said Holmes; ‘out of my last fifty-three cases my name has only appeared in four, and the police have had all the credit in forty-nine.” THE ADVENTURE OF THE NAVAL TREATY.
So, apparently Edward Hardwicke is either a quokka or a honey badger, right?
What's Jeremy then? And David?
I could see Jeremy as a cat. Or is that too obvious? The way he climbs stuff, pokes Watson, gets the zoomies. All very cat-ish behaviour. Not to forget the "disappointed cat" picture of him from "Love Boat" 🤣
David seems like a Golden Retriever or something. Idk. Always so excited, happy, and ready to follow Watson around.
Your thoughts?
@amypihcs we have been summoned.
We always say that Jeremy is an elf (look at his ears and sheer beauty) and David is a puppy (need I say more?) But a cat is definitely fitting for Jeremy at times
Granada Holmes (and so Jeremy) are NEVER beating those catboy allegations, but i would call it more of a Holmes thing in general than a Granada Holmes thing in particular.
Jeremy is undoubtledly an elf, i mean, he has pointy ears and he's just too beautiful to be real at literally every point of his life. David...
Need I say more? He's such a total puppy <3
The way he looks at holmes waiting for a good boy and a head pat so so many times! He's adorable.
I totally agree about Jeremy's otherworldly beauty - definitely elfin in nature.
For me Holmes, if a cat, is a big cat, like a panther or something, e.g. the way he slinks about, often after dark, silently breaking into the houses of villains. He has big prey to catch. Then there's that sleek black hair, plus he nearly always wears black.
David Burke looks like a lion. Watson may be a puppy, but that man was leonine.
ngl, every time i see Holmes on screen i always paid a little closer attention to Jeremy’s ears and thought he would’ve made a cute Vulcan 🤭
with the shape being elf-like and exuberant nature, watching him was like being in a trance of sorts cause of how he exudes beauty

LOOK AT THOSE SMILES, THEY ARE SO CUTE.
Holmes' smile is like: My life partner is so smart and knowledgeable about horses, I love him, everyone look at how smart he is and he loves me too, that's my partner everybody!!!
Watson's smile is: Look there is a horse, he's so cute and I get to pet him!!!!
Also, Ted does look like he is a bit out of character in this one.
Ted did so well with the horses!

Ah, Lestrade.
Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke)
in 'The Devil's Foot' 1988 Granada Television
Hi, I rewatched The Greek Interpreter and there's a bit where Jeremy Brett speaks Greek according to the captions. I was wondering if the bit was intelligible and how well he pulled it off?
Hi!! I recently posted the last Greek scenes in the episode (including Jeremy's) subtitled!
Yes, it was very clear and he pulled it off really well! It was a very pleasant surprise - he does have an accent, which is to be expected, but it's really cute
The words themselves (eleurthera= free/unoccupied and kathismata = seats) are not easy ones, especially back to back! In all, his diction is very clear, which is the standard of an actor like him. I love listening to him
(also, this is unrelated, but someone recently told me Jeremy Brett did a movie based in Cyprus called Anteekdikisi/An Act of Reprisal ! I havent watched it yet but I'm curious to see if he speaks any Greek in it- I know he plays a British soldier
Apparently it's on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enYSFBugVb0 )
[also, one last unrelated thing, the actors playing the Greeks in The Greek Interpreter, are, in fact, Cypriot, which makes sense given that Cyprus was occupied by the Brits]
his expressions are so good man even my autistic ass knows what he's feeling

Fellow Sherlock Holmes Enjoyers!
does anyone know of a reference for train routes/ schedules across time periods? I've been cross-referencing the Wikipedia articles of different stations to see when they were built, which is an agonizing way to do it lol. I suppose i could literally try to look up a Bradshaw from the year I want to set my fic in?
It's a tiny detail, but it's one I consistently spend a lot of time on. Trains are such a big setpiece of the time period, i feel like getting it wrong would be horribly embarrassing.
