“Y/n, you have a call on line one!” Your receptionist popped her head in your door and nodded towards your phone. You were so wrapped up with the document on your computer screen you didn’t even notice that she forwarded the call through, the red light blinking needingly at you.
“Thank you” you smiled at her.
“Lee-Chan Corporated, this is y/n speaking.”
You waited for the person on the other line to speak, but you couldn’t hear anything, just some commotion in the background.
“Uh, hello, y/n?” Korean. You haven’t heard the Korean dialect used so fluently in almost a year.
“Yes, may I ask who is speaking?” you responded in the same dialect.
“It’s Jin, Seokjin? You don’t recognize me?” he stammered nervously.
“Jin? Wow… I mean, how are you? Is everything okay?” You were in complete shock. It had been a year since you had talked to the boys. You figured they could never forgive you for leaving them the way you had.
To say you hadn’t checking the internet for their names everyday would be a lie. Even absent, they were still such a huge part of your life. You thought about texting them frequently, but you figured if they wanted to reach out to you about leaving, they would have. And they hadn’t.
“Everything’s okay. I’m good… really good. But listen, I don’t have long to talk, but we’re actually in Japan right now for a few days. Do you want to meet up?”
“Of course! Is tonight okay?” you asked.
“Yeah, we’re staying at the Mandarin Oriental. Can you meet us there?”
“Sure… Hey, Jin?” you asked with hesitation.
“I’ve missed you guys…” you whispered.
And just like that the line went dead. You stood up, nervously pacing your office. You didn’t even notice when the door opened and Jihun had stepped in.
“Uh, babe?” he asked. You jumped at the sound of his voice.
“Shit, Jihun. Try knocking next time would you” you snapped.
“Whoa, y/n. What’s going on?” he asked, coming to you and taking you into his arms to calm you down.
“They called” you whispered, taking a step back. You sat on the top of your desk and started fidgeting with your fingers, avoiding Jihun’s stares.
“Kim Seokjin. You know… my friends from back in South Korea that haven’t talked to me in a year” you hated how bitter your tone sounded.
“What did they want?” Jihun’s shoulders stood wider, defense taking place of his normal relaxed nature.
“They’re in town and want me to come meet them tonight.”
“And you’re going, aren’t you?” he replied through clenched teeth.
“You don’t think I should, should you?”
“I’m going to support whatever decision you make, but they really hurt you y/n. You cried for two months, waiting by the phone for them to contact you and it never came.”
“I hurt them, too, Jihun. I should have never left like that.”
“You did what you thought was best at the time. They should have understood that.”
“Not everybody is you, Jihun.”
“And what the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing…” you sighed. “I don’t want to fight about this, okay? I’m already freaking out about seeing them again. But I’m going to go.”
“In about an hour if you don’t mind me leaving early…” you hesitated.
Jihun took a deep breath in, his hand pushing his hair back from his forehead.
“That’s fine, but if you need me you call me immediately, okay?”
“Thank you for always protecting me, but I think I’ll be okay tonight.”
“Just promise me” he demanded.
“Okay, babe. I promise.” You slowly walked over to him, and wrapped your arms around the back of his neck.
“You know I love you, right?” you smiled up at him, trying to relax the tension.
“I know. I love you more, baby girl.” He bent his head down, his lips meeting yours in a gentle kiss.
“I need to finish up this report before I leave. I’ll see you later at home, alright?”
All Jihun could do was nod before leaving your office.
An hour later, you finished typing your last report of the day before sending it off to Mr. Chan, the boss of Japan’s branch. You opened your phone and sent a quick text to Jihun before heading out to meet the seven strangers who you used to know better than your own self.
You took deep breaths, trying to steady your growing nervous shaking with the incline of each floor the elevator took. You looked at yourself in the mirror, would they even recognize you? You thought. You had dyed your hair a lighter brown color, and had recently fell in love with the gym, so your muscles are now more defined. Did they call you to let you know they hated you in person?
The ding of the elevator signifying you reached the top level broke you out of your thoughts. It’s now or never, your brain told you.
The door opened slowly a few seconds later.
You heart skipped a beat seeing Jin again for the first time in a year. He looked different, older… more mature.
“Well look what the cat drug in” he smiled at you, and you felt yourself instantly relax. He’s smiling.
“I could say the same for yourself, barging in my territory without so much as a warning.” Jin opened the door wider and you stepped into his arms, squeezing tight and taking in the scent. You bursted with happiness and sadness alike, realizing he still smelled the same. He was still the same.
“Come on, everyone’s in the kitchen. I just finished cooking dinner.”
“Oh my God, please tell me it’s Korean. I haven’t eaten a good Korean meal in forever.”
“Of course it is. Who the hell do you think I am?” He laughed.
When you walked in the kitchen, everybody stopped and turned towards you. You were taking them all in the same they were you.
“Hey guys” you gave them a small wave.
They immediately got out of their seats, coming over and hugging you and given you their welcomes. As everyone was getting settled back in their seats, you noticed Jungkook at the other end of the table. He hadn’t gotten up to wish you hello, and he just kept staring at you.
“Jungkook” you nodded to him, and he stiffly nodded back to you. You looked to Taehyung to your right and he shook his head to the left and right, silently telling you to let it go. Your stomach dropped, the realization that not everyone had forgiven you sank in.
“So…” Hoseok broke the tense atmosphere. “How are things?”
“Things are good!” You responded happily, and it was the truth. You were happy. “I really like it here. It was a little rough to get used to at first, but things came together.”
“That’s good,” Taehyung said, wrapping his hand around yours and you looked up at him, matching his smile.
“How are you guys? What are you doing in Japan?”
“We’re promoting our new Japanese CD” Namjoon spoke from across the table. “We’ll only be in Tokyo for a few days before heading to the next city.”
“Ahh gotcha. How is all that going? Your band and stuff?”
“It’s going great. We’ve really blown up all of a sudden, ya know, getting more international attention and all that.” Yoongi said.
“That’s great! I’m really happy for you guys for reaching your dreams. I saw where you had won a billboard award not too long ago.”
“Yeah” they all smiled at each other. “That was great” Jimin spoke up.
“What else has been going on with you guys? I hate to ask, but I HAVE to know,” you laughed, “whatever happened to Lucy?”
“You were right” Jimin pouted. “She started posting pictures of herself with us on her social media, and you know how we get about that kind of stuff…”
“And well, let’s just say she left her internship with us when she tried to open up her own business using the tagline ‘BTS personal make-up stylist’. Can you imagine how pissed off our real make-up stylists were?” Namjoon laughed, shaking his head.
“But that was not after she kept trying to get Jimin in bed and put it on her snapchat like they were actually a thing” Jin laughed even harder.
“Okay, okay, enough of that shit” Jimin changed the subject, but he was laughing along with the others. “Tae has exciting news.”
“Well I’m acting now” Taehyung beamed.
“About damn time” you nudged him playfully with your elbow.
You and the boys spend the next two hours eating, drinking and catching up. You knew almost everything that had happened to them in the past 300 and something days since the last time you spoke to them. But there was one person who continued to sit there quietly, Jungkook. With each minute that passed you got more and more irritated that he refused to talk to you.
“I really hate to kill the good mood here, but Jungkook, can we go talk? Privately?” you looked at him and he stared back at you. His arms crossed and his lips tight. “Please?” you begged.
“Just go, dude” Namjoon urged him. “It’ll help.”
Jungkook and nodded, standing up and heading towards the hallway.
“So, you look good” you said, when you shut the front door, isolating the two of you from the rest of the boys.
“Thanks… you do to” he finally said.
“Y/n. Why did you do it? Why the fuck did you leave like that?” he snapped like the past year of pent up emotions finally had an opportunity to break free.
“Do you understand how fucking hard it was for me to keep the secret that you were moving from them? From my brothers? They all hated me when they found out I knew and didn’t tell them, that I didn’t try to stop you” he went on.
“Oh, Jungkook, I’m sure they didn’t hate you.”
“No” he spat. “Don’t you dare even try to belittle it. They would have tried to stop you, you know? They had wanted to go to the airport, or something, but they couldn’t have. And the whole time I knew. I watched you pack. I watched it all happen and let it. I’ve been so angry at you, and sometimes I even think I hate you.”
“Jungkook,” you took a step forward, “please don’t hate me. I am so sorry I put you in that situation. That was never fair to you and I regret it so much.”
“And not only did you leave like that, you never tried to contact us. Not fucking once. You couldn’t even let me know if you had gotten settled okay. You’re one of the most selfish people I’ve ever met, y/n. And I know the other members may have gotten over it with time, but I haven’t.”
“I didn’t reach out because I thought you guys hated me, and after the note I was waiting to hear from you. The first couple months I was miserable. I cried almost everyday thinking that you all were finally out of my life for good.”
“So why didn’t you do anything?”
“Because after awhile, you just get used to the pain. And then when it becomes apart of you, you slowly start to forget about it.”
“So you just forgot about us then? Of course you fucking did.”
“I didn’t say I forgot about you guys, Jungkook! I could never do that. Actually, I know everything that you guys have done in the past year. I watch every video, read every interview, click on every picture posted. You guys never once left my life.”
“I really did hate you, y/n, but right now looking at you, I just miss you. I never really told you how much I loved you. You were like a sister to me. You were just a big a part as the boys were growing up. Five years, y/n…” his voice trailed off.
“I know… and I’m so sorry I haven’t been there for you and I never got to properly apologize for leaving. But, Jungkook, like I’ve said, I’ve been keeping track of you guys, and I’ve noticed a change in you. You’re slowly becoming this whole other person… at first I thought it was just you growing older and maturing, but not I’m scared it’s all this anger you’re holding in towards me. Let it out, Jungkook. Look, I’m here, and I promise I will never go again. People change when bad things happen, and I know I hurt you, but please, forgive me. Not just for me, but for yourself, too.”
“Y/n” Jungkook’s eyes started to water and he took two giant steps to where he was standing directly in front of you. “I’m so sorry.” The two of you embraced and held tight to each other for what seemed like forever, but didn’t seem like it was long enough at the same time.
“You promise you won’t leave us again? You mean that?” he whispered in to your hair.
“I’m not coming back to Korea, Jungkook. My life is here now. But I promise to talk to you guys as much as you can. And I promise to come to your concerts and continue being your biggest fan, okay?”
“For being my best friend.”
