and yet the stories themselves are not really about that at all. yes they're there and have cute domestic moments and love declarations but in many cases they're just a backdrop for the true emotional core of these stories which have nothing to with romance. they are stories of great tragedies and losses, of the great love stories that define one's life; of sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, friends and sons and daughters. multiple times the narrative makes a point to warn against romantic love at its most all-consuming — that love will destroy you if give it all to one person. that being forced to make that choice will kill something inside of you. none of which is a new theme to Cassandra Clare's work but for it to be presented in such a way and said so explicitly is something I wasn't expecting. she literally dressed these stories up in romance because that's what sell and what people want (just look at the discussion that simply announcing the couples spurred), because that is what our culture values above all else. and yes romance is still important both in these stories and to the characters within them but not in totality, not as a rule and it is not what lies at their heart.

It mumbles in its sleep, almost enough to be having an entire conversation all by itself!

Its witch listens intently, not quite sure what it's saying.

In time, its mumbling slows and eventually stops.

I want to torture this man day and night until he stops pleading for mercy, learned hopelessness kicking in, and then I'll show him the feminine affection he needs.

When he begins to think it was all a delusion or that I was being controlled by someone, I'll give him an orchiectomy with a rusted scalpel.

He is oomf tho, and I mad respect that, like, I could find someone on twitter or discord who is exactly like him, so I can't bring myself to fully hate him, so after this whole ordeal, I'll gaslight him into thinking that it wasn't me who really meant to torture him, that I was being controlled and I'll love him dearly.
