Okay forealsies mow

I feel like the crew is severely underutilized in EPIC so I wanted to show what I would’ve changed/what I would’ve fleshed out.

An idea for Perimedes I had was that he serves to represent the irrationality and resentment amongst the crew. Similarly to how Eurylochus is the voice of the crew’s general grievances, Perimedes is the voice of their emotions. Mainly their negative ones.

Perimedes holds the most resentment towards Odysseus. About the journey, the low food, the plans, etc. Some of his complaints are justifiable, some of them are more irrational and unrealistic (ex. Complaining about things that are out of Ody’s control). It’s easier to direct his anger at one singular person rather than to just be reasonable. But Eurylochus is the one who talks sense into Perimedes everytime, being the reason why no one in the crew ever acts out. Eurylochus keeps them at bay.

Perimedes’s resentment continues to swell when Elpenor dies because he’s the only one who noticed. Perimedes feels some anger towards Eurylochus as well for also not noticing (honestly he’s mad at everyone) but ends up forgiving Eury because he cares for him more than Ody.

Perimedes’s resentment begins to border on downright hatred after Underworld because of how Odysseus starts acting. Curt, secretive, almost cold. Even towards Eurylochus and it makes Perimedes’s skin crawl (“You’re his damn second! You’d think he’d listen to the last guy with a brain on this ship!”). Eurylochus has to assure Perimedes that he is not in need of defending and that Odysseus is just going through a lot. Perimedes (very reluctantly) listens and stands down, but he and the crew are getting antsy with boiling emotions and hunger.

The straw that breaks Perimedes’s back isn’t actually Scylla. Scylla is definitely part of it but it’s actually Eurylochus’s fight with Odysseus.

Eurylochus is yelling, screaming, demanding answers from Odysseus. It’s the most distraught and emotional. Perimedes has ever seen Eurylochus. And all Ody has to say is… “I can’t”? It enrages Perimedes. The biggest betrayal yet, and that’s all Odysseus has to say? He’s about to attack Odysseus himself when Eurylochus suddenly draws his weapon. All the canon stuff after happens (Peri stabbing Ody, finding the island) but Perimedes and Eurylochus have a talk while Odysseus is passed out.

Perimedes insists that they should just kill Odysseus, but Eurylochus refuses to do so. He doesn’t have the energy, he says it isn’t worth it, but most of all? He still loves Odysseus. Even after everything.

Perimedes snaps. Lashing out at Eurylochus. All his bottled up emotions being released. He’s angry, he’s sad, he’s grieving and it all comes out in this big explosion of emotions. Until he loses steam, and he breaks down into sobs in Eurylochus’s arms.

Regular canon bs still happens up until the end of Thunderbringer. The crew charges towards Odysseus, shouting with their swords drawn. Perimedes kind of wants to join. But above all else? He’s tired. Way too tired. So instead, he sits down with Eury, and he waits.

Perimedes is hot headed, out spoken, and sometimes even unreasonable. But it all comes from bottled up emotions and walls he never lets down. His refusal to get close to anybody causes him to be distant from the crew. Everyone cares about him to a degree, but he’s let few people see past the bitterness to who he really is. Imagine a cousin who you know has your back but is also kind of an asshole.

Elpenor died before Perimedes could have a true moment of opening up to his best friend. And he only let himself be vulnerable to with Eurylochus at the very end.

And honestly? Underneath all the bitterness, he doesn’t actually hate Odysseus. Not true hatred, anyway. But his anger comes from feeling overlooked, feeling like Odysseus is falling short, feeling frustrated. Perimedes always turns to Eurylochus instead of Odysseus because he sees Eurylochus as rational and reasonable. Eurylochus makes the crew feel seen which is why Perimedes gravitates to him more.

A lot of people say if Eurylochus died instead of Polites then nothing bad would’ve happened. And to that I say… hell nah.

Would the same sequence of events have happened? Maybe not. But I’m extremely confident that Polites would not have been some messiah that prevents all evil from touching the crew. I love him but yall give this man way too much credit considering he was here for one song and then died🫩🥀 Even with the wind bag, Eurylochus’s reason for opening the bag was never confirmed so you can’t even confidently say Polites would or would not have opened it too.

In my death swap au I think Odysseus would elect Polites as his new second in command since Eurylochus would’ve been the one to get pancaked. Polites feels unprepared but hey, how bad could it possibly be?

Spolier alert: It was that bad.

Polites already figured Eurylochus’s role was not easy work but realized really quick that he was biting off more than he could chew when tensions started to heat up. Odysseus being reckless, Poseidon, the crew, it’s a lot for any person. Over the course of the two years Polites’s optimism has dimmed but he still tries to be happy, which makes the crew build a sort of resentment. They still love him ofc! But have you ever had the worst day of your life and then someone starts reciting motivational quotes to you? Yeah thats how the crew feels. Polites started to feel disingenuous in his positivity which causes a rift between him and the crew.

Polites’s frustrations would boil completely over after Scylla and I like the idea that his crash out is 10x worse than Eury’s because he’s been bottling up so much.
