Seventeen long years. He waited. Waited as he made a vow to himself, lying under that tree, that he’d wait for his true love to come set him free from this terrible fate. The right time will come. He knows it.
-
After you had just humiliated yourself during the wedding rehearsal by forgetting your vows, you flee from the church into the dark woods away from the village. You needed some time alone to memorize the vows correctly as the priest scolded you to do so.
Your parents had prepared an arranged marriage with James Paul McCartney, which will boost the social class of your family and restore wealth of his family. You hated the idea being married off to some random stranger you didn’t know. Despite all this, after meeting Paul, you and him actually started to like each other. Possibly in love. You and him had the same interest in music and started to relate to one another. Oh lord, Paul must think you’re a fool by now for ruining the rehearsal. His family must’ve thought the same thing according to the expressions they gave you.
Judgement and disgust.
And your parents? Disappointed.
Not only you humiliated yourself during the rehearsal, you humiliated your parents as well making them look bad in front of Paul’s family because of your foolishness.

Some future bride you are. Pathetic.
You step into the dark woods, feeling the cold air giving you goosebumps. It was quiet except for the sound of your heels clicking and twigs snapping beneath your feet. The moonlight radiant and serene in the dark cloudy sky above you. You mumble to yourself, memorizing the vows.
“lt really shouldn't be all that difficult. It's just a few simple vows. With this hand, I will take your wine. Ugh, no, that’s not it.” With a sigh of frustration, you kept walking deeper into the woods, still practicing. But it was getting a bit difficult for you. You almost wanted to give up.
You thought about Paul for a moment. You thought about the way he smiled at you when you first met him back at the manor. Paul was kind to you, very polite and charming. He made your heart flutter in your chest. No man has ever made you feel this way before. You really did started to like him. The wedding is tomorrow, and you can’t ruin this upcoming day to humiliate yourself the second time.
“With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never empty, for I will be your wine.” You say, finally memorizing the vows flawlessly. The more you practiced, the more you began to remember.
“With this candle,” You snap a branch feigning lighting a candle tilting it towards the other. “I will light your way in darkness.”
“With this ring, I ask you to be mine.” A quiet voice whispers, catching you off guard.
You quickly turn around, finding no one except crows standing on branches overhead, staring down at you. The wind rustling through the trees.
Something was off.
“Hello? Who’s there?” You call out, expecting someone to show up. Was someone here playing a prank on you just to scare you?
Instead of a response, a cold band slips onto your finger on your left hand. Turning your head back, you lift your hand only to find a wedding ring on your finger. What the hell? How did this happen?
You look down, finding a “root” that was shaped like a hand. All of a sudden, the “root” grabbed your arm, pulling you down to the ground making you gasp. The crows above you scattered, wings flapping, and began to caw loudly. You struggle to pull your arm back, but it was too strong as it gripped on you tightly, refusing to let go.
You managed to pull your arm back, falling backwards landing on your backside. You lift your arm and realized it was a skeletal hand still gripping your arm. No flesh. Just bone. You scream shaking it off till it released you landing on the ground a few feet away from you.
Suddenly, the ground began to shake, splitting open. It was like something or someone was desperately trying to get out. A fleshy blue hand reached out, crawling out of the ground as you watched, horrified by what was happening right in front of you. There rose a tall man standing over you with blue skin, dressed in a tattered, all-white wedding suit, his right ribs showing through the hole in his suit. He held still for a moment before he moves his long blue curls out of his face, revealing his doe eyes staring right at you.
“I do.” He whispers, his voice soft spoken, extending his right hand towards you.
You wasted no time getting back up on your feet and started to run. The corpse man grabs his skeletal arm from the ground, attaching it right back in place, and chases you at a slow pace.
While you ran, you tripped over a gravestone almost twisting an ankle. You realized that you were in an old abandoned graveyard. You turn around behind you as the corpse was moving towards you, still chasing you. Once again, you get back up on your feet and continued to run before he could reach you.
What the hell was happening?
Why are you being chased by a dead man?
You ran into tree branches getting yourself stuck. You struggled to escape but the tree branches ripped parts of your dress. You turn your head again and the corpse was still coming after you, not quitting. You panic breaking free from the branches, finally finding a path to escape out of the woods.
You made it out of the woods successfully, stopping at a bridge near the church to catch you breath. You breathe heavily turning your head once again, searching if the corpse man was still chasing you.
He was gone.
It was eerily quiet.
Were you finally safe?
Was this all your imagination?

With a sigh of relief, thinking you were safe, the corpse man appeared right in front of you inches away from your face by the time you turned around to head back to the village. You scream in horror backing away from him as he walked closer to you.
Your back hits the stone wall of the bridge. Now, he has you trapped. Both his hands move to capture your waist, pulling you against him.
“You may kiss the bride.” He whispers again, leaning towards you before gently pressing his cold lips against yours. Several crows flew, surrounding you and the corpse man, as their caws were getting louder and louder.
Then everything went black.

Makes me sad but the songs r still bangers tho likeee….?!!

In this one,Michael is really horn- what who said that??
After a 15 minute drive and a small talk with Bill, we finally reach Hayvenhurst. I go for the door handle and open it to get out.
"Thanks bill, sorry for making you drive at this hour" i say apologetically looking back at him while getting out.
"Don't worry about it, it's not unusual for me to do late night drives, especially with mike." Bill said looking up at me.
"Well I'll see you later, I'll try not to be too late." I said before closing the door. Bill waved at me and i waved back.
I made my way to the door and knocked softly. I can hear Michael telling the maid "I'll get it!" And i couldn't help but laugh quietly. He sounds like a kid rushing to his favorite toy.
The door opens with a quick swift revealing Michael with a very big smile, almost chuckling.
"You made it." He breathed almost relieved. " yea of course i did. I told i would didn't i?" I said with a slight smirking.
"You did but i thought you might change your mind." He says still breathing unevenly.
"Did you run to the door?"i asked as i step in slightly in the door way.
His eyes widen a little bit and a hint of embarrassment crosses his face .
"I didn't run." He said light rolling his eyes. "I jogged." He corrected looking anywhere but at me.
" wow big difference, my bad" i said shockingly with a hint of sarcasm.
"Okay. jogged, ran, doesn't matter i just wanted to open the door as fast as i can." He said looking down shyly.
"I wanted to see you as fast as possible" he mumbled still looking down."
Why is he doing this to me. I don't want to feel these things but my emotions wont listen to me. It's listening to him instead.
I smile shyly, looking down. "Well I'm here now, so let's go up before i change my mind." I say jokingly looking back at him.
His eyes widen and i see a hint of fear in it.
"No please don't go, let's go, I've got everything set up already, snacks and everything." He says quickly with his eyes staring daggers at me trying to say anything to convince me to stay. It's not like i would really leave, i was just playing.
"Mike i was joking. We're gonna watch the movie and have fun, let's go." I said chuckling lightly. I grab his elbow and lead him upstairs to his bedroom. I already know my way. Ive been here times before. Whenever he couldn't show up to the studio i would come here to see if he's okay and we would end up in his bedroom, sometimes in his garden just talking and watching movies.
As we walk i heard him release a sigh of relief, and i couldn't help the tiny smile that made its way onto my face.
We finally get inside his room and i see that he really did set up everything. Blankets, snacks, pillows.
"Wow you really were excited weren't you?" I state raising my eye brow at him.
"How could I not be." He murmured softly, looking at me fully. I swear I can almost read his thoughts when he looks at me like that, which kind of plays with my own thoughts.
"Well i am pretty hard to please but you outdid yourself like always i guess." I sigh, walking over to the couch in front of his tv.
"hard to please? Pffft please, you almost claimed me as the king of kings when i bought you skittles last time." He says chuckling lightly, walking over to sit next to me.
"I don't joke about skittles, and you know that." I say firmly, pointing at him.
"Hey i don't blame you, not one bit, but you're easy to please. And i like that, you have these serious responsibilities and you could be raging a war and take one look at candy, you immediately forget all the stress." He says, looking at me with a soft almost broken expression.
"Hmm i guess you're right, what can i say, thats the power of sugary chemicals." I say as open the skittles packet in front of me. I hand him some and pour some into my hands.
"Alright Mikey what are we watching today?" I ask looking straight at the tv while eating some of the skittles. I still feel his gaze of me and i can see that he hasn't even tasted the candy. He was just looking at me. I turn towards him hoping he would answer me before things got awkward.
He looks away while clearing his throat.", uhm we could watch the muppet movie, i got it not long ago and watched it once. It was really good." he said standing up and inserting the cassette inside the VCR. He turned it one and walked back to the couch.
This time he sat down a little closer than before and i didn't mind. This wasn't unusual for us, sometimes we would even lay on each other's heads and shoulders. (hehehe head & shoulders get it?).
The movie starts and we get comfortable under the blanket while eating popcorn and candy.
" you know my mom said that my dad's mistress kinda looks like miss piggy." I state out of no where.
Michael chokes on the popcorn and laughs loudly still coughing. I pat his back gently.
"Man you good?" I ask still patting his back.
" you cant just say that, especially not while I'm eating. What is wrong with you girl?" He says still laughing and holding his hand to his chest.
"Oh i didn't think it was that funny, i mean my mother literally got cheated on with that." I say pointing at miss piggy in the tv.
" Thats not funny thats just plain disrespectful." I say ,slightly offended .
Michael’s laugh gets louder.
"Please stop, i cant breathe please" he wheezes. Still clutching his chest.
" dude why are you laughing at my mom getting cheated on?" I ask loudly, trying to hide my laughter and seem offended.
His laugh becoms uncontrollable.
"Oh my god please stop i cant." He laughs loudly, kind of similar to the joker and that finally cracks me.
I join him laughing and hide my face behind my palm trying to calm the laughing fit I'm having.
"Im glad my mother's misery is amusing to you." I say still laughing, now looking at his direction.
" wooh i cant breath girl." He says lightly chuckling now. " I cant help laughing when you just blurt stuff like that out. What do you expect me to do." He says grinning and looking at me.
"uhm comfort me like a normal friend cuz my dad's mistress looks like a muppet." I state boldly.
" okay, I'm so so so sorry your dad chose someone who looks like a character from a bizarre children's program." He says with over exaggerating empathy and looking at me with his big dark eyes.
" thank you ill accept it for now i guess." I say nonchalantly leaning back into the couch and popping popcorn into my mouth.
" your welcome your highness. I wont repeat this grave mistake again if you spare me." He says sarcastically clasping his hands together in a praying position.
"Spared" i declare raising one hand and putting it down. I hear him laugh lightly and lean back close to me.
We continue watching the movie, but i can feel his gaze shift to my face every once in a while. I see his fingers twitch the closer his hand comes closer to mine. I don’t think he knows that i notice these little things, i do, and it kind of makes my heart flutter a bit. There is tension in the tight space between us, and it makes me want to get closer to him, maybe lean a little on him, but i don’t want this to get out of hands because i might not come back from it.
Its been an hour and the movie is almost over but I'm starting to get really tired and i really don't want to upset him and tell him i have to leave but i can already feel my consciousness leaving. I yawn and shift slightly. "Hey is bill downstairs?" I ask tiredly.
Michael looks at me, eyes widening slightly.
" why? Do you want to leave? So soon." He says almost pouting.
"Well yea I've been in the studio since 7 am." I say, another yawn escaping me.
" he might've gone home already. Why don't you sleep here?" Michael says shyly looking down. I raise my eyebrows at and look around.
I narrow my eyes at him in confusion, why would he leave? But whats more bizarre to me is the idea of me spending the night.
" me? Sleep here? I don't think thats a good idea, i should go back that would be too much, plus i need you to relax and believe me having me here isn't relaxing at all, look, you almost chocked a while ago cuz of me." I inform him
"Nuh uh it was because the popcorn went down the wrong pipe. Please stay." He begs slightly looking at me with those big ass pupils. I know I’m already going to cave in, i mean how could i not?
"And what exactly made the popcorn go down the wrong pipe?, me." I say proudly and lazily, trying to look him in the eyes.
" okay fine but i did send bill home because it was getting late and this movie is long so i figured you were gonna get tired so i got all the necessities ready for you." He says pointing to the bed where laying there was a towel, a pair of pajamas, and socks, different colored pairs.
Im still confused as to why did he sent him home when he’s my ride.
"Michael, honey, i cant sleep here, i really have to leave, plus i-"
"I know but it's already too late." He cuts me off
"I'll take the couch and you sleep on the bed, plus this way you'll actually make sure i slept." He says, a sly smirk creeping up on his lips.
I stare at him, Contemplating yet barely actually thinking since sleep is invading my body. Eh why not, I'm too lazy to even walk anymore . It's not weird. Right? Im just a mentor who fell asleep in her mentee's house. Yeah No biggie.
I realize that i haven't replied to and that I'm just staring ahead at him and so is he.
I sigh "Okay I'm too tired to argue anyways." I reply shrugging.
Michael grins so wide it actually looks like it hurt.
"Okay then. The bathroom is right around the corner and there is a new tooth brush i set for yo- anyone who wants to sleep over." He corrects himself nervously. I already caught the slip up and it was hard not to smile a bit.
"Thanks I'll go in and change real quick." I mumble as i pick up the pajamas.
"You're not going to wear the socks?" Michael ask while pointing at the socks.
"It's August..." i reply looking at him blankly.
"Right it is." He says while rubbing the back of his neck.
"Dude you might be a psychopath if you wear socks to bed in the summer." I state, taking the pajamas and walking to bathroom.
"What? I wear them sometimes. Are you saying I'm a psychopath?" He asks. offended.
"I mean Ive never seen you and Michael Myers in the same room. Im just saying." I say, raising my both my hands in a surrendering gesture.
" girl go change, you're literally sleep talking at this point." He says shaking his head at me.
" yea, go on, change the subject, Michael." I say emphasizing on his name. He laughs lightly and looks down still shaking his head.
I go into the bathroom and shut the door behind me.
Michael's POV
After I also change into my pajama, i hear the bathroom door open and she steps out in Latoya pjs, but she looks prettier than Latoya ever looked in them. She looks up at me with sleepy eyes and sighs.
"Im off to bed mike, but I'll still have my eyes on you even if they're closed. You better get some sleep." She says tiredly, squinting her beautiful eyes at me.
"I'll sleep i promise, having you here is already calming, in fact i already feel sleepy." I say smiling and tilting my head lightly, staring at her as she tries to drag her self to the bed. Kind of like a sloth. She looks so overwhelmingly cute when shes all tired out in those pjs.
Poor angel, she can barely even walk to the bed. I'm going to give Quincy a serious earful, why is he overworking her? How could he work her until she was this exhausted. He can work me this hard but not her, i can take it, but why does she have to.
"Alright good night mike. Get some rest please. Im serious." She says already tucked in under the covers, eyes half closed.
Even in her sleepy state she's worrying about my rest.
God how can anyone expect me not to fall for her when she's the only person who showed me the true meaning of caring, and protection.
" i will, Don't worry. goodnight darling." I say softly.
"Hmm." She hums slowly drifting off to sleep. I watch as her breath becomes slow and steady. I stand there for a minute just watching her before walking over to the other side of the bed to get my pillow and make my way towards the couch.
I cant help but turn around again to see her again, its like this need inside me to just crave looking at her, so i do and i notice her toes are out.
Thats why i gave her socks but her stubbornness got the best of her.
I chuckle to my self when i see her little feet sticking out of the covers. I place the pillow on the couch and walk over to the bed to adjust the covers so that she's all covered.
I look back up at her sleeping face, studying her relaxed features and the ache in my chest intensifies.
God i wish i could just tuck her against my chest, hold her, and breathe in her sweet scent that lingers every time she embraces me in a friendly way. But nothing about the way i want to hold her is friendly.
I feel enraptured just looking at her curled up in my little haven.
She's laying there, clueless about how many nights I've spent dreaming about her, her scent, her touch, on that bed shes sleeping on.
How many times ive tossed and turned, waking up in cold sweat yet my body was fever hot, aching for her.
How many times i dreamed about her hands caressing my chest, then my stomach, then lower.
How she would tease me and go back up to my neck while i tremble beneath her, barely able to form words.
How she would look at me when i gasp her name.
How i would take her palm and kiss it over and over again, each kiss traveling up to her shoulder and breathing her in.
How she would rest her head against mine while she completely ruins me, mentally and physically.
How we would breathe sweet affirmations onto eachother’s lips while i lose my self in her.
How i would hold her so close so we can melt into one another.
And how i would tell her how much I've loved her, and how she's being so good for me, and how shes making me lose every ounce of sanity in me.
How I could feel the ghost of her touch, even though she wasn't here, the warmth of her breath lingering against my skin.
How the dream alone was enough to bring me to ecstasy, leaving me trembling, whining her name, throbbing, and on the verge of tears, just to snap out of the haze and realize it was all just a fantasy.
How can she be here, sleeping so beautifully on the bed that belonged to the soul she torments unknowingly.
Now she's here and I cant stop looking at her, I cant help wishing I could take every burden from her shoulders, every worry, every stressful thing she carried, and leave her with nothing but happiness.
How can she possess such gentleness and yet be so unbreakable.
God I love her, i want her, i want to be like her, i want to consume every fiber in her being like she consumed mine, i want us to be one. Nothing can separate us if We'r one.
I reach my trembling hand to the piece of hair falling onto her face and slide behind her ear, barely grazing her skin. She stirs slightly, scrunching her nose.
"Oh babygirl I'm sorry." I coo quietly, trying hard not smile at her cute expression. She inhales and slightly lifts hear head, chasing the cold spot on the pillow case. I lift her head a little and turn the pillow to the other side with my other hand, then place her head back down gently. She whines but doesn't moves.
"Oh i know sweet girl, i know, I'm being so mean disrupting your sleep, aren't i." I whisper while caressing her hair lightly, looking at her longingly.
My chest suddenly feels like it's going to burst. I have to bite down on my knuckle while still looking at her face to calm the cuteness aggression thats taking over me.
I decide to get up because this is getting dangerous and i cant breath properly.
I walk over to the couch, with one swift motion I lift the blanket and get under it, and finally lay down , but sleep is no where to be found, so i stare up the ceiling.
I lied to her earlier when i said i was already sleepy. How could i think of sleep when shes right there, basically 8 feet away. She doesn't seem to know the effect she has on me and i thank god for that, because if she did, i could never look her in the eyes again.
I shift nonstop, seeking comfort, my whole body feels aflame and my breath is uneven, still reminiscing the feeling of her skin when i tucked her hair.
I have to stop these thoughts right away otherwise i wont be able to control it.
I kick the blanket off seeking some type of relief from the feverish heat inside me.
My own brain became my enemy and my thoughts begin to betray me.
My memory started invading my conciseness and all i can hear is the little whine she released earlier. my imagination was going against my body, spreading all over with a burning flame that courses through every vein in me, resulting in an aching sensation that travels down below my stomach.
And my torment had begun all over again. I close my eyes fantasizing about her little whimper beneath me while i bury my self in her as deep as i possibly can, Hearing it nonstop. Oh god.
I know this was already out of my control the second i felt the heat beneath my stomach
I get up in a hurry and walk to the bathroom. The ache becoming unbearable with each step.
Hand trembling, i fumble with door and twist it, finally opening it and getting inside, locking it behind me, still breathing heavily.
I try to breathe in and out slowly but that doesn't do anything. My thoughts are racing with her face in them. I can hear her soft whine in my ear teasing my imagination. I can almost feel her breath tickling my ear as i dive deeper over and over again.
I turn around and lean my head against the cool wall, i try to breathe slowly to ease the agony but nothing helps. I reach down to where I'm aching the most. The feeling of her skin still lingering on my hand, the same hand that I'm using to relief my pain and that thought alone almost ends me.
My head falls backwards and a loud gasp escapes me as i touch the most sensitive part . I bite the back of my hand , trying not to make a sound as my movement grows more rapid but her name settling in my chest seems to have a mind of its own, it crawls up my throat till it leaves my lips with a whimper.
Shes right here, sleeping peacefully in my bed completely clueless about the thoughts consuming me beyond the door that separates us, and how I'm ruining my self for her.
I cant stop thinking about the softness of her skin, and how i would nibble on it to keep the noises down, as i lose control in her.
How i want to bury my hand between her thighs, and pull it back up to taste her.
I would whisper in her ear how her taste drove me out of my mind as i dive deeper into her, shaking uncontrollably barley able to steady my movements.
My body trembles, my eyes almost roll back but I still see her face in my head, and that does it.
Hot liquid spills onto my hand as my body jerks forward chasing the sensation of her imagined touch.
After a little bit, I finally come off the euphoric sensation and lean my head downwards on the wall looking down at the mess i made.
I sigh still breathing unevenly ,as i turn to the sink to clean my self and fix my clothes.
Suddenly i hear movements.
I freeze when i hear the foot steps coming closer to the bathroom, Then a soft knock.
"Michael? Are you okay? I heard something, are you in pain?" She asks softly, i can barely hear her.
My eyes widen, and my heart is beating so fast that it feels like it's going to stop any minute.
I know my voice will betray me if i speak, my body is truly my worst enemy for some reason, especially when it comes to her.
I have to say something, i don't want her to suspect anything. I can imagine her standing there sleepily waiting for my reply, and my face softens up. I take a deep breath and it comes out shaky, a stupid attempt to calm my racing heart.
I shut my eyes tightly. "Im okay, just feeling a little under the weather so I'm washing my face to cool off." I reply, my voice trembling slightly.
"Michael you don't sound good, can you come out for me please?" She asks softly, voice so small almost mumbling. Shes going to be the death of me.
"Yes sure, just a second." I say washing my hands thoroughly. I dry them and head to the door. I place my hand on the door knob and take a deep breath again, my face still burning and the heat in my body is still lingering.
I finally open the door to see her standing there rubbing her eye. The sight almost made me cross to her and pick her up in an embrace while burying face in her neck.
She stood before me, innocent and unsuspecting, completely unaware of the thoughts in my head that were no where near innocence.
" you don't look okay. Your face is red." She says looking up at me with sleepy, concerned eyes.
She walks closer and places her hand on my forehead, my breath hitches, her eyes widen slightly in shock.
"Dude you're burning up. Why didn't you wake me up? It looks like you"re getting a fever, are you getting a cold?,
Little did she know it wasn't from a cold.
It was her.
"Im not. Im fine, don't worry." I say softly looking at her tired eyes. She touches her own forehead and touches mine again. My heart doesn't seem to be getting used to her touch because it keeps skipping a beat at every contact.
" yeah mike, your definitely getting a fever." She says with that cute little frown that wrecks me. I chuckle lightly at her dramatic gesture. I grab her hand thats resting on my forehead and pull it down.
"Im fine i promise. Now let's go back to bed, your eyes are fighting for their lives." I say guiding her by her hand gently, towards the bed. Her touch burning my skin even though her hand isn't hot.
"No. you sleep on the bed, you're sick it would be very cruel of me to let you sleep in the couch so please you sleep on the bed and i got the couch." She stops.
I look back at her smirking, and raising my brows at her.
"Not going to happen sweetie. Don't even argue, end of discussion. No gentleman would let a lady sleep on the couch while he sleeps comfortably on the bed." I say, reaching the bed and gently pushing her forward on it.
"Okay let's both sleep on the bed then." She suggests casually, not realizing that she just completely shattered my entire sanity.
My eyes widen and she just laughs softly.
"Mike we are just going to sleep, i promise i wont bite. But maybe I'll kick, I've been told i practice taekwondo in my sleep." She says sheepishly, climbing on the bed slowly.
I just stand there, staring at her, eyes still wide, not comprehending that my wish just came true without me even trying.
" fine i wont kick you hard, now come one, don't make me drag your ass." She says as she lays down, facing my direction.
I cant seem to find my voice so i just walk over. I lift the covers, and lay down next to her. Heart is still beating almost out of my chest painfully.
"There, isn't that better?" She says scooting closer to my arm, adjusting comfortably. She closes her eyes and hums softly, small smile on her lips.
My eyes flutter shut as soon as her scent reaches me. I open them again and look down at her, leaning my head closer, trying to breath her more.
She opens her eyes slightly and looks up at me. We both look at each other in silence, the only sound being my heartbeat in my ear. We keep looking at each other, her eyelids fighting to stay open and looking up at my heavy, half open, drunk on desire eyes.
I can feel my face getting hotter by the minute but i don’t care, i just want to stare at her for eternity.
She breaks the silence."You're going to be okay, i wont let you get sick, but to do that you have to rest Michael." She states, her tired eyes pleading to try to get me to understand.
"Okay." I whisper mesmerized, shifting closer to her. She pulls the covers over me and tucks me and herself in.
"Promise?" She asks, sticking out just her pinkie from the covers. I sigh, smiling at her cute gesture.
"I promise." I assured her softly, intertwining our pinkies together. Not breaking the eye contact.
"Okay, i believe you, let's sleep now because I'm about to be a sleep experiment if we don't sleep now." She mumbled tucking her self in more, drifting off again.
I laugh at her comment, shocked how she can come up with it while half asleep where when i sleep i can barely form a word when i wake up.
She really is different from everyone i know. Unique, special, intoxicating, and addicting.
Without realizing it, I slowly drifted closer to her, our noses now almost touching, and i just watch her take steady breathes. I study every part of her features, memorizing them so they never leave my mind when she leaves. My chest tightens at the thought that i cant have this every night and that she will go tomorrow, leaving me with just my memories of her sleeping in my bed. Leaving me craving her closeness. I keep watching her drift off to sleep for the next 30 minutes suddenly feeling drowsy my self.
Finally my eyelids stop fighting the heaviness, sleep began to consume me and i drift off breathing in her sweet scent and savoring it so that i can dream about her, even if shes here with me now, i don't want to go one second without her face filling my head, i want only her in there, nobody else.

"I promise." I assured her softly, intertwining our pinkies together. Not breaking the eye contact.
"Okay, i believe you, let's sleep now because I'm about to be a sleep experiment if we don't sleep now." She mumbled tucking her self in more, drifting off again.

I cant help but turn around again to see her again, its like this thirst inside me that craves looking at her whenever i have a chance, so i do, i look at her from head to toe slowly and i notice her legs are out of the covers.
"Oh babygirl I'm sorry." I cooed quietly, trying hard not smile at her cute expression.
I can hear her soft whine in my head, teasing my imagination.
Only my pretty girl.

August 20 1979 5:03 pm
After the wiz movie came out and after I and Quincy successfully Scouted Michael into the west lake studios everything was going great. The kid is talented as hell and easy to work with.
God knows it was a gamble not because I was unsure of him, not at all, but because I had to prove the board wrong and thats exactly what michael did when Off the Wall came out. It was climbing that charts real fast and I couldn't be happier for him.
"Man i told you that kid is godsend, the second i saw him i knew it, i told you" Quincy proudly stated and pointed at me, i laughed lightly shaking my head as I looked down at Michael who was sitting on the leather couch next to where i was standing and smiling shyly while covering his mouth. "You're embarrassing me" Michael said softly, smiling widely and shaking his head.
"Boy don't act like you don't like it" i said jokingly and widening my eyes at him with a look that said (i know you like it), still smiling he looked at me with a soft gaze and drew in a slightly shakey breath and looked down immediately.
I couldn't help the slight smirk that crept lightly on my lips. I knew he was a little fond of me it was so obvious and i really didn't want to send him wrong signals. I did care for him truly but like mentor not a lover. I do like taking care of him and talking on the phone with him when he needs help or encouragement. I am a bit older than him and the dude's fame just sky rocketed i don't want to ruin that for him and to me thats the best way to show him that i truly care about him.
I drew in a deep breath as i sat slowly next him. "That doesn't mean our work is done here mike" i said looking at him and he looked back at me nodding lightly "Absolutely we are just getting started, people are gonna be expecting better things from you stink, we can do it and give it to them, i have full confidence in you" Quincy said as he leaned back into his chair.
I looked back at Michael and noticed he nervously started biting his bottom lip. " alright don't scare him now at least let him have his happy moment" i said . I looked back at Michael and leaned my head a little. " Dont think about the next big thing, for now just relax and enjoy your time" i said nodding slowly. Michael looked at me without saying anything, he just looked me like i was the only person in the room. I tried to hold his gaze i really tried but instead I nodded at him and looked away trying to break away from whatever the fuck that was. I knew he took a liking to me but dude stop looking with that kind of look that needs a warning label. I don't like that i got light headed from just a look, thats not me, those things shouldn't affect me. And yet it was starting to.
"Alright I'm gonna get going and you should too" i said getting up and pointing towards Michael. " you better take advantage of this time, relax and sleep before things get chaotic" i said
"yes i was going to head head out too" Michael stated getting up " is bill here yet?" I asked, he looked at me for a brief second and answered "no i sent him back cuz i thought this would take the whole day" mike said softly looking down.
I nodded "alright i got you, ill drop you off don't worry about it" i explained trying to hide my little smirk as i noticed his shy smile creeping up his face when i said i would drop him off. " Alright ima stay here for a little bit i still have some things to go over you two head out" Quincy stated with a sly smile looking at mike for a brief second and looking back at his work.
I squinted my eyes at him trying to figure out ( even though i already know) why he's being cocky. I looked back at mike and he's already looking at me with that same damn longing look. NOPE.
" alright" i said lightly clasping my hands together. " lets get out of here before he changes his mind and start making up shit for us to work on" i said too quickly while picking up my purse and turned towards the door. I can hear Michael softly chuckling at my comment. " You know thats right" Quincy mumbled not even looking at us. We both start walking across the studio hallway i glanced around, smiled and lightly greeted whoever we found in front us. Michael was quiet but I can feel his eyes on my back.
We got to my car and started driving. Michael was surprisingly calm and looked at peace which was a very rare sight.
" looking relaxed suits you, you know. You always have a little tension in your eyes whenever i see you, but today you look relaxed." I said without looking at him. I can feel his head turn slowly towards me. i can sense the hesitation in that deep quiet breath he takes. " you kind of tend to be the reason that i can actually breathe and calm down sometimes" he admitted softly and quickly looked ahead.
I ignore the shift that was happening in my chest and continue talking like what he just said didn't linger and play with my thoughts a little. "Mhm well I'm glad. If i can give you a little peace of mind you can come to me anytime. Don't think twice I'm just a phone call away." I say casually not knowing that what i just said intensified the pull he felt towards me already.
He immediately looked the other way towards the window but i can feel his uneven breathing and it made me feel guilty. Why? Im just reassuring him as his mentor.
Right?
We finally get to Hayvenhurst and i look at him. He's a little more tense now that we are here and i know exactly why.
Joesph.
"Hey man you don't have to deal with everything alone you know, you're not alone in this house neither. You got your brothers, your mother and god knows she loves you" i say confidently looking sharply at him. he smiles looking down." i know" he sighs while picking at his jeans. " i know that, don't worry about me I've been okay for a while now" he says as he slowly looks up at me. " you don't know how much difference talking to you and hanging out with you.." he paused looking embarrassed after realizing what he said. " and Quincy of course , it made such a difference with me, a good difference really. Im glad i have you, both of you in my life." He says almost in a whisper tone i could barely hear him. Still fidgeting with his jeans as if he cant decide if he wants to look at me or keep looking down but that hesitation slowly fades away as he looks up at me eye to eye and realizes I'm already looking at him softly and that makes the ache in his chest grow but he doesn't look away.
We continue looking at each other, him trying to show me his lingering, aching, longing emotions, and me trying to show him that this shouldn't happen. Not now at least. For his sake.
I finally break the stare down and look down, in my head thanking god that it wasn't words but honestly i don't know which is worse. Our lingering stares or the unsaid words.
"Well I'm here whenever you need me so don't forget that. If I'm here you don't have to feel lonely, yes I'm your mentor but if you ever need a friend I'm here and so is Quincy. Although i wouldn't go to him cuz he'll just make you work but you get what I'm saying." I say.
He laughs nodding his head, " oh i know" he says raising his eyebrows confidently and i laugh too. " well I'll see you in a few days, try to relax and sleep mike. Im not playing, I'm being serious please don't over work your self, matter of fact ill call and if your ass is awake I'm coming over then you'll wish you got Quincy's workaholic ass instead". he laughs throwing his head back and then looks down while smiling. " maybe i wont sleep, then you'll have a reason to come" he says facing down but his eyes slowly looks up at me. "Yeah?" I ask with a smirk, turning slightly to face him "yeah" he whispers shyly still looking at me
"get out of my car mike" i stated quickly getting rid of my smile . He laughs again "okay geez woman i was just joking... Maybe" he says while opening the passenger door.
" uh huh get out " i grin sarcastically. " I'm out" he teases " okay close the door genius" i joke. he chuckles. "Okay I'll see you soon" he says " yup see you" i responded.
Michael's POV
I stood there and watched her car disappear into the long drive way and through the gates not wanting to miss a single second of her lingering presence.
I know I'm down bad but how could i not be when she's the only thing that kept me sane this past year. Her energy and her being changes the whole atmosphere in the room. Without her even trying to.
Ive always wanted to be like that but I never possessed the kind of positivity that seemed to follow her everywhere. It just wasn't for me. Nobody can blame me for being down bad for her, not when from the first day we met she showed me care no one ever showed me.
Flashback 1979 oct 2 preparing for The Wiz.
" alright lets practice the lines again cuz if we get it wrong Sidney wont shut up about it" diana ( yes diana ross) says sarcastically looking at me through her eyelashes. "Okay lets" i agree. We say our lines to each other and complement one another while also giggling a little. I liked being with diana sometimes. she felt like a safer place than my own home.
Half an hour later me and diana were finishing up, i start standing up when a hand reaches out holding a bottle of orange juice right by the side of my face. I look at the person holding the bottle out to me, i don't recognize her
" hey here take a breather, refresh you self" she says while her gaze is turned away looking back at the door as if to check on something.
Im just looking at her trying to figure out who she is because I've never seen her. She turns and notices I'm taking too long and looks up to see my confused expression. "Oh I'm the executive producer with Quincy here he told me you like orange juice." She giggles and i notice tiny dimples at both sides of her cheeks. I blink and look down, shes still holding the bottle. "Thank you, and y-yeah i do like orange juice"i stutter like an idiot but she doesn't even seem notice or care.
She looks at diana and raises her eyebrows. " hey diana didn't see you there, you want anything to drink?" Diana looks up at her and smiles dryly "no I've got my own thanks" she says now looking down barely looking at her. "okay well if you need anything let me or Quincy know" she says looking directly into my eyes and for some reason i cant bring my self to look away from hers.
Shes talking about things i might need during the shoot and where to get them and pointing at nonexistent fridges and cabinets completely unaware of whats going on in my head as I'm studying her face and the way she pronounces words.
"Okay, you got it right?" She asks and i just blink, she raises her eyebrows at me asking silently if i got what she said. "Uh yea-yeah i got it um th-thank you yea" i nod quickly even though that was a lie didn't hear a word she said.
Without saying anything she smiles and turns to leave and i just stand there watching her. "Alright shall we continue babe" diana asks looking up at me "uh yeah let's" i nod sitting back down, but i can’t help but look back at the door every once in a while.
Later that day
"Michael" one the assistant calls poking out his head from the door way.
" you got a call" he states " okay, coming" i head towards the phone and pickup "hello" i say into it. " when will you be back to preform with your brothers, this ain't gonna be good for you when no body wants to book Y'all anymore cuz your dumbass decided to be in a stupid movie instead"Joseph claims.
My stomach drops at the sound of his voice" Joseph i told you at the twenty ninth of December" i informed him softly. " and you'll answer however much i ask boy just cuz you got your own little movie that don't mean that you don't need to answer to me anymore, you got that?" He said sharply.
I shut my eyes tightly and try to breathe but my breath comes out uneven. When i open my eyes shes standing in the door way looking at me with concerned eyes then walks towards me. She looks up at my face trying to read my fearful expression and she hears Joseph rambling on how ill never be enough on my own and how ungrateful i am, the next second she does something I've never Expected anyone would do. She takes the receiver to her ears and listens and nods expressionless.
"Alright heres what we are gonna do Jospeh, your son singed a contract with west-lake recording studios so legally he has to be here where we need him. Now the good news is that you darling have no say in this whatsoever isn't that amazing? Its is. So don't ever talk to our client like that again or I'll pull some strings in Motown and prevent you from ever stepping a foot in. Ever. and you know i could. Have i made my self clear?"
Silence "good, have a wonderful day" she says lightly smiling as she hangs up the receiver
. "Alright why don't you relax for a little bit I'll call bill and then you can head out how does that sound good?" She asks unaware of what she had just done for me. She stares at me waiting for an answer and the a small tiny frown appears on her forehead.
" why are you sad? He's not gonna do anything to you I promise I made sure of that. If he does try anything you come to me or Quincy, you don't stay quiet." she assures me and thats when i notice that my eyes were burning. I didn't even realize i teared up. I look away quickly hoping she didn't catch it.
"Im not sad" i breath shaking my head slowly " I'm not sad at all" i assure her looking back at her now with a soft gaze before turning back so that she doesn't notice my tears. How can i be sad when she just stitched some parts of me that i thought would never heal. She made Joesph look so small in front of me. Ive never seen him not have the last word, never seen him so quiet before. i wanted to hug her so bad but when i turned she was already heading for the door.
" have some alone time with your self if you want , you deserve it. But I'll be back, and you better be good by then otherwise I'm making another call" she says raising her index finger quickly at me and then setting her hand down on the knob as she closes the door.
My shaky hands grip the chair behind me as i try to sit down and calm my breath. She was the first person to ever stand up for me and the way i felt about it was indescribable. From that moment on the feeling i get when i saw her was overwhelming in the best way possible. It was the most beautiful, agonizing ache I've ever felt.
END OF FLASHBACK
I opened the door to my room and headed straight for the bed. The anxiety i had that usually lingered when i thought of sleeping wasn't here today. I know what she said was a joke but still every time i remembered how she aggressively and said she would come over with that tiny beautiful frown, my heart felt full like it was gonna explode. I laugh quietly to myself, feeling my face get hot. "God you never leave my mind do you?" I say to the empty space above me as if it was her. I bring my hands up to my forehead to cool it as if that was gonna help, turns out my hands were even hotter than my face.
How can she have that much effect on me when she didn't even touch me? Oh god if she did i would probably perish.
I get up to open my drawer. I pull out the sketch i did of her. I set it on the bed and turn my body to where i can see her heavenly face. "Please notice my feelings" i beg. I know i sound pathetic begging a sketch that I made but I cant bring my self to say those words to her in person. "God please don't ever leave me. I don't know if I can survive it. Even if you cant return my feelings don't ever leave me please." My voice slightly shaking as i stare at the sketch.
"Please."I beg hopelessly.
Your POV
After i finally slipped into something comfortable, i had barely sat down when suddenly i hear the phone ring.
A smile creeps onto my face knowing exactly who's calling. If I'm being honest his calls became my favorite part of the day. WAIT NO scratch that i didn't think that . it's cuz I'm tired, thats all .
I cross the room to reach the phone and place receiver to my ear. "Hello"
Silence
"Hello" i called into the receiver.
"Do not turn around if you want to live" a whispery voice says into the phone.
I sigh into the ear piece " Michael, I'm gonna come get your ass, why aren't you sleeping?" I say sharply trying to hide my laugh.
"What? How did you know it was me?" He whined
"Man i wanted to scare for at least 5 minutes." He chuckles. "Yea how is that working out for you?" I question. " hmm not very well." He replies. I can almost hear his little pout.
"It's okay i promise I'll get scared next time" i reassure him while laughing lightly. I hear him also laughing along. " girl how would that work if you already know it's me?" He questions while scoffing.
"Hmm I'll play along i guess. I'll pretend that i don't know you, and it'll be our little horror game." I smirk.
I hear him laughing lightly. "Ooh i like that" he says softly and i can almost imagine him biting his lower lip.
"Whachu doin?" I question playfully. He sighs into the phone before replying. "Nothing, i couldn't sleep, i tried to read but that wasn't helpful soo i called ya."
"Well it's still kind of early i suppose." I say rolling my eyes lightly. " do you want to go watch a movie?, we can invite bill too." As i said that, i heard a little gasp at the other end of the line and then silence. "Michael?" I asked. " why does bill have- why don't you come here and me and you can watch a movie here? Please?." He asks softly.
Oops what have i just gotten my self into? I think.
I cant say no. I can never say no to him. But i don't want this to become more than just "Michael and his mentor." Ughh lord help me please.
"Uhm ye- yeah sure if that will make you happy I'll be there shortly." I hesitate while shutting my eyes tightly.
"That will make more than happy. I'll send bill for you, don't drive here by yourself. It will be late when you get back. " He says softly to the point where i can barely hear him.
I raise my eyebrows impressed by his sudden protectiveness. " I'm a big girl mike, i can drive alone at night." I say laughing slightly into the receiver.
"Oh i know that, no doubt about it. I just don't want you to cuz i don't want to worry. And you don't want me to worry because you want me to sleep don't you?"
He says chucking lightly.
"Touché" i agree
"Okay then I'll see you." I say as i hang up
"Cant wait." I hear right before the line cuts.

•☆•••☆•
1986.
You were not one to rejoice in someone else's misfortune, but thank God Karen caught a cold. It led you to the biggest opportunity in your career.
You were an established name in Hollywood. A reference. Why? Because your client list was mostly made up of people of color. You worked most often with Whitney, regularly with Janet and LaToya Jackson, as well as, perhaps, the entire modeling industry.
Beauty standards excluded people of color. Black people, especially. As a result, women with melanin were forced to wear shades too light for their skin tone and colors that did not complement their undertone. Some makeup artists straight up refused to work with them simply because 'they did not know how to handle their skin color' or because 'they were not taught at school'.
Bullshit, obviously.
And that was where you came in like a breath of fresh air.

SIDE STORIES ARE NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER IT HAPPENED BETWEEN PART 1 AND PART 2.
⤷ masterlist.
the morning in the studio had started badly. very badly. the rehearsal room erupted in chaos, because the girl who supposed to perform ‘the way you make me feel’, just got fired by the label today.
“we perform in two weeks!”
“we need someone who already knows choreography.”
“someone who’s comfortable on stage.”
“someone who can learn learn quickly!”
the choreographer sighed.
“…we’re doomed.”
everyone started throwing out names.
“what about—“
“she’s already doing smooth criminal.”
“okaaay. what about—“
“she’s out of town.”
“then what about—?”
“too short.”
the room grew quieter. they all had no idea, no replacements. then the rehearsal room doors opened.
“good afternoon, everyone!”
you walked in carrying a clipboard against your chest. you smiled brightly at the room.
“i brought the costume adjustments from wardrobe!”
silence.
every single person turned toward you, including michael. you stopped walking after reading the room.
“…oh.” you looked around. “did i come at the wrong time? did… something happened?”
nobody answered. the choreographer slowly looked at michael. then at you. then—
ding!
the choreographer smiled.
“oh.”
you looked around again.
“why are you all looking at me?”
one of the dancers spoke first.
“…sunshine.”
“mhm?”
“can you dance?”
you blinked.
“dance?”
“yeah.”
“oh!”
you smiled.
“i did ballet.”
“…really?”
“my whole life.”
a few eyebrows shot up.
“you did… ballet?”
one of the dancers asked. you nodded happily in response.
“mhm!”
“…your whole life?”
“mhm!”
“you never mentioned that.”
“it never came up.”
“…”
“i stopped a couple years ago. but…” you shrugged. “i still dance.”
you continued, still confused, and still smiling brightly as ever.
“…why did you ask?”
another long silence.
then the choreographer clapped once, making you jump a little.
“found her!”
you blinked.
“found…” you looked around. “…who?”
𖦹
before you knew it… you were standing back in wardrobe. but this time, you weren’t holding the costume— you were the one wearing it.
you looked at yourself in the mirror, still processing the situation.
“wait… me?”
you pointed at yourself.
“yes.”
“for ‘the way you make me feel’?”
“yes.”
“i’ll be performing… on stage… with michael?”
the choreographer only nodded.
“oh.” you paused and looked around the room. “—THAT SOUNDS FUN!”
while everyone had been panicking earlier— you just looked like you’d been invited to disneyland.
you looked down at the black dress.
“…i made this.”
one of the seamstress adjusted the shoulder.
“you did, sweetheart.”
“…this is weird.”
the seamstress only laughed. you smoothed the skirt down, then smiled.
“it’s nice.”
𖦹
michael happened to walk in for his own fitting. then stopped when he spotted you. you turned to him.
“oh! hi, michael!”
you gave a little wave, and michael forgot why he’d walked into the room.
“hi.”
you were standing on the fitting platform in the black dress they altered for ‘the way you make me feel’. the hem swayed just above your knees, black heels adding a few inches to your height.
but it wasn’t even the dress (maybe a little), it was you. you look so excited.
“so…”
you looked down at yourself before looking back at him.
“what do you think?”
michael looked for a moment— and immediately had to look somewhere else.
“it…” he cleared his throat. “…looks very nice.”
you beamed.
“i think so too!”
you looked down again, smoothing the fabric over your waist.
“the dress is really pretty.”
“…it is.”
one of the dancers standing nearby hid a grin. michael’s ears had turned pink.
𖦹
the choreographer clapped.
“alright! let’s get to rehearsal.”
you followed everyone into the rehearsal hall. you’d walked past these doors hundreds of times
you would always carry garment bags, dropping off costumes, but never fully going inside.
you stepped onto the taped rehearsal floor, looking around like a curious kid. michael watched you, unable to stop smiling.
the choreographer called everyone over.
“we’ll start simple.” he looked at you. “just walk.”
you blinked.
“walk?”
the choreographer simply nodded.
“yes. walk confidently— like you own the stage.”
you nodded seriously.
“okay.”
you took exactly four steps. then looked back at the choreographer.
“like this?”
the dancers immediately burst into laughter.
“no, no—”
the choreographer smiled, then pointed at you.
“less…” he searched for the word. “…happy.”
you looked horrified.
“…less happy?”
“yes.”
“oh… i don’t know if i can.”
michael laughed loud enough for everyone to hear.
“i believe her.”
you hid a smile before taking a deep breath, and attempted the walk again. you put one hand on your hip, now more confident. you even showed a little smirk. then three steps in—
you accidentally smiled when you caught eyes with one of the dancers. the choreographer sighed dramatically.
“there she is again.”
“…who?”
you looked around.
“sunshine.”
you made an ‘o’ shape with your mouth, and sheepishly smiled.
“oops.”
𖦹
an hour had passed, and to everyone’s surprise— you had picked up half the choreography already.
the room stared.
“wow.”
one of the dancers said.
“she’s learning this way too fast.”
“…ballet.”
another nodded.
“definitely ballet.”
they took a break shortly after. the you wandered over to michael, smiling from ear to ear.
“this is so much fun.”
michael’s eyebrows shot up and looked at you. he hummed.
“you like it?”
“i love it!”
you looked around the rehearsal hall.
“i finally get to see what happens in here.”
michael smiled.
“it’s usually less exciting.”
he said, you laughed.
“maybe, but i think…” you looked around again. “it’s kind of magical.”
he flowed your gaze. the big mirrors on every wall, the lights, the taped floor… he had spent countless of hours in here.
to him, it had become ordinary, but seeing it through your eyes— made it feel new again.
𖦹
rehearsals became surprisingly fun for everyone.
by the end of the week, you have manage to hide your smile easily now. the confidence came naturally.
years of ballet have never really left your body. you remembered turns, timing, and posture. the muscle memory quietly waking up after years of sleeping.
one afternoon, the choreographer stopped the music.
“again.”
you nodded, and did it again. but this time, you caught michael’s jacket— pulled him just a little closer, and held eye-contact.
then… casually let go and walked away.
the room went completely silent, and michael was convinced you could hear his heart pounding. he just stood there, forgetting the next eight counts.
“…mike?”
the choreographer snapped his fingers.
“you’re supposed to follow her.”
“oh.”
he blinked, and shook his head.
“…right. sorry.”
one dancer whispered to another.
“sunshine got to him.”
“…she absolutely got him.”
one snickered quietly.
the funny thing was that right after rehearsals ended, you became you again.
“that was fun!!”
you laughed, then looked at the time.
“oh God! i have six costumes to alter— i gotta go!!”
before anyone could stop you, you were already halfway back to wardrobe.
everyday followed the same routine for you. rehearse. wardrobe. then rehearse again. until everyone started wondering when exactly you slept.
the thing was that you didn’t. well… not much.
𖦹
one afternoon, a seamstress walked into the wardrobe room. it was strangely quiet, which meant one thing—
“sunshine?”
there you were, curled over one of the cutting tables, your head was resting on folded arms, and you were still holding a pencil.
a half alteration list lay under your cheek. when you turned your head, a sticky note was clinging to your forehead.
nobody had the heart to wake you up. the seamstress smiled.
“she’ll wake up in a minute.”
someone whispered.
“…let her have five minutes.”
the others quietly worked around you, lowering their voices without even realizing it.
moments later, you stirred awake and sat up immediately.
“i wasn’t sleeping!”
you announced with complete confidence to absolutely nobody.
blink.
blink.
the sticky note stayed attached to your forehead. you looked around the room, and yawned. you stood up and picked up your clipboard, and headed to the door.
michael had spotted you first down the hallway. he blinked.
“…honey.”
you slowly blinked and turned to him.
“hm?“
he stared for a second.
“you’ve got…”
you immediately reached for your cheek.
“glitter?”
“no, it’s—“
“my hair?”
“no—“
“did i spill coffee on myself?”
you looked down on at yourself.
“honey…”
he laughed softly.
“…c’mere.”
you nodded and obediently stepped closer.
“like this?”
you tilted your chin up expectantly. michael looked down at you for a quiet moment, the sticky note was still stuck at the center of your forehead.
‘…cute.’
the thought came so naturally it startled him.
he smiled to himself before carefully lifting a hand, his fingertips brushing the edge of the paper as he gently peeled the sticky note away.
“…it followed you from here.”
you stared, then slowly looked at the sticky note in his hand.
“oh.”
your face turned pink.
“i’ve been walking around like that?”
“you have been.”
he nodded. you covered your face in embarrassment, and michael just patted your head in comfort.
“oh God.”
𖦹
despite everything, running around back and forth from rehearsals to wardrobe duties— you never complained, never stopped smiling, and somehow… you never stopped encouraging everyone else.
and finally… performance night arrived.
the backstage buzzed with nervous excitement. the dancers stretched, makeup artists hurried from one person to the next, and stagehands rushed props into position.
the black dress swayed around your thighs as you stretched. you bounced lightly on your heels, unable to keep still.
“i can’t wait!”
one of the dancers laughed at your enthusiasm.
“you nervous?”
“maybe a little. but mostly excited.”
you respond. a voice spoke behind you.
“you’ll do great.”
you turned around to see michael, already dressed for the performance.
the blue shirt caught backstage lights, sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms, black trousers tucked into polished loafers.
his curls framed his face perfectly, a few falling over his forehead exactly the way they always seemed to during rehearsals.
and he looked… different. not because of how he was dressed tonight. but because of the performance had already settled into him.
there was an easy confidence in the way he stood, relaxed but ready, like the stage was already calling for him.
and for the briefest moment— you looked at him, and something fluttered quietly in your chest.
“…”
huh.
it felt strange, not bad, but different. you smiled anyway.
“thanks.”
his smile softened.
“i mean it. you’ll be amazing.”
you heart gave another tiny, inexplicable skip.
“…thank you.”
you decided it’s probably just pre-show nerves. that had to be it.
…right?
before you can think about it any longer, the stage manager called.
“places everyone!”
the room sprang into motion. you took one excited breath.
𖦹
the lights dimmed. the arena disappeared into darkness. then the crowd erupted as soon as the opening notes of ‘the way you make me feel’ blasted throughout the arena.
“you’ll be amazing.”
michael had only said it minutes earlier. he’d believed it. truly. he just didn’t expected to be this right.
you walked onto the stage. michael nearly missed his cue. because sunshine was gone— or at least disappeared the second the spotlight found you.
you walked across the stage in black heels with ease, confidence. every step was deliberate. you looked over your shoulder, caught his eyes, then looked away again with the tiniest grin.
michael followed behind you, without even thinking. you stopped just long enough for him to catch up. your fingers caught the front of his blue shirt, pulled him closer, and your eyes met his.
then, with a teasing smile, you let go. turning gracefully on your heel— and walked away. not rushed or flustered, but almost daring him to come after you.
and he did. exactly on cue.
the audience screamed.
what surprised him the most is how effortlessly you disappeared into the role. every movement was precise. elegant.
years of ballet hidden beneath pop choreography. even the way you turned your head felt effortless.
then during one section that almost made him lose composure.
you looked over at him. still completely in character. one eyebrow lifted ever so slightly, as if silently asking—
you keeping up?
michael laughed. actually laughed, right on stage. the audience roared louder, thinking it was part of the performance.
by the final chorus, you had become impossible to look away from. you were confident, playful, bold enough to tease him, yet elegant enough to make every move effortless.
you floated across the stage, only to slip away out of reach just before he could catch up.
michael knew it was acting. just before the performance, you were worried whether you left the iron plugged in. somehow, watching you now, he couldn’t convince his heart of that— and that only made him admire you even more.
after the song had ended, you immediately hurried backstage— and you immediately broke character.
“DID I DO GOOD?”
you practically bounced over to the dancers. your eyes were sparkling.
“did you guys see the audience?! oh God, that was amazing! they were so loud—! i almost forgot the cue.”
you rambled, jumping a bit in your heels.
“i forgot how much i missed performing!”
you were almost hopping in adrenaline, while the dancers laughed at your thrill.
while michael walked backstage a few moments later, already preparing for the next performance. but all he could think of now you.
one moment, you were the sweetest girl he’d ever met. the next… you had the entire arena, and him, wrapped around your finger without even knowing it.

so cute🫢♥️
Bethlehem, Palestine, 1986. Martin Parr
◟♡ ˒ ʾʾ Michael Jackson was achingly desperate for your physical touch. He knew that you’re weren’t a touchy person, but he can’t help but seek out your warmth as much as a man possibly could.
While you were lazily flipping through the latest magazine, Michael sat beside you watching a movie. It had started entirely by accident. His hand rested beside you, palm facing up toward the ceiling. Unconsciously, you had reached out without looking, wanting something to fidget with.
It was a completely unconscious, hypnotic rhythm. Your fingers tracing the lines of his palm. It was a delicate, feather-light touch, and entirely addictive to Michael.
He was petrified to move a single muscle, afraid that you’d snap out of it and realise what you were doing.
Don’t move, he kept internally repeating to himself. Do not move.
You were entirely immersed in the magazine, your eyes widening only the tiniest bit whenever you found something interesting. Michael found it all too endearing.
Michael’s leg suddenly became restless. He pleaded with his own body. No. Don’t ruin it. Please don’t ruin it.
He let out a tiny, barely audible exhale. The feeling was so good it was almost agonising. You weren’t doing it to comfort him, you weren’t doing it to tease him. You were simply doing it because your body naturally sought out his, even unconsciously.
He wanted to stay in this position for the rest of his life. But obviously his traitorous body had to betray his mind. A stray curl tickled the tip of his nose. He tried to fight it. He really did.
His head gave a sudden, sharp jerk as he sneezed into his left shoulder. Your fingers froze. Michael’s heart sank straight to his feet. No, no, no, no, please God, no.
You blinked as the daunting realisation of what you had been doing crossed your face.
“Sorry. I didn’t realise I was doing that.” you murmured, your voice slightly raspy from disuse.
Casually, you began to pull your hand away, intending to rest it on your thigh. Michael felt the warmth slipping out of his palm. The corners of his mouth slightly drooped, his sad, wide eyes watching you.
Before he could stop himself and before you could fully pull away, his fingers gently clasped around your wrist.
“Wait,” Michael blurted out desperately. You blinked at him completely startled. “Michael? What are you doing?”
“I… I wasn’t complaining,” he stammered. He tried his best to seem casual but it was plain to see that he was slightly nervous. “You don’t have to stop.”
“I didn’t mean to annoy you, I’m sorry.”
“Youweren’tannoyingme!” Michael rushed out frantically, his eyes wide. He cleared his throat, trying to seem casual again. “It wasn’t annoying at all. It was… it was fine. It was good.”
“It was good?” you repeated his words, a teasing smile tugging at your lips.
“Yeah,” he muttered shyly. He looked at you through his dark eyelashes. “It was nice. You can… you can keep doing it. If you want.”
You stared at him for three long seconds while he watched you with pleading eyes, patiently waiting for your next move like a puppy eyeing a treat. A soft, genuine laugh escaped you. The sound instantly melted Michael’s features.
You didn’t pull away. Instead, your fingers began the same rhythm they had earlier.
“Like this?”
Michael nodded happily.

Could you write something with reader and Michael being best friends since childhood, he has a crush on her and proposed to her a few times but each time she said they're only friends and hes more like a brother to her, she also dates other guys over the years and Michael is very upset. Thriller or bad era and maybe happy end where reader finally falls too? (Lowkey inspired by the song friends😌)

"Will you marry me?" Michael asked quietly in the middle of movie night.
You blinked at him. "...Marry you?"
He nodded, a shy smile tugging at his lips.
You and Michael had been best friends ever since his family moved to Los Angeles. You were inseparable. Where one of you went, the other followed.
To you, he was your platonic soulmate.
To Michael, he always wanted more.
"Yeah..." he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Will you?"
You smiled so softly it made his heart ache.
"Michael..." You reached over and squeezed his hand. "We don't have to get married."
His smile faltered. "I'll always be your friend."
You mistook his proposal for fear rather than love. Ever since Thriller had turned him into the biggest star in the world, loneliness had settled into his life in ways no one seemed to understand. You thought he was asking because he was afraid of ending up alone.
You wanted to reassure him. Instead, you broke his heart.
It wasn't the first time he'd asked.
Over the years, Michael had proposed more times than either of you could count. Sometimes with a dandelion, sometimes with a handwritten letter. Once with a paper ring he'd folded during rehearsal.
Every time, your answer was the same.
You didn't want him believing you were going to leave him, that he needed to officially pin you down just to keep you around.
You were staying. Not because he was Michael Jackson. Simply because he was Michael.
Sweet. Kind. Silly.
The sort of person who could make you laugh until your stomach hurt, who listened as though every word you spoke mattered. He held your hand without shame, made room for you wherever he went, and somehow always made you feel like the most important person in the room.
To you, that had always been enough.
Michael could only press a gentle kiss to your cheek in thanks.
But deep in his heart. He wanted more.
So much more.
He noticed everything about you, and there wasn't a single thing he didn't love.
He loved the way your eyes crinkled whenever you laughed, the way your voice softened when you spoke to him, and the way you could make even the most ordinary day feel special.
He loved how fiercely you cared for him, never once making him feel overlooked or misunderstood. He loved that you matched his energy without hesitation, that you'd climb trees with him one afternoon, then happily spend the next wandering through the neighborhood with Louie, talking about everything and nothing at all.
He loved the quiet moments just as much as the loud ones. Most of all, he loved you.
Michael wiped his sweaty palms against his jeans before quietly asking, "Can you spend the night?"
You smiled and nodded. "Sure." His heart skipped. Any extra moment with you felt like a gift. He wanted to spend as much time by your side as he could. He wanted you to know that he loved you exactly as you were.
Without thinking much of it, you rested your head against his shoulder.
"Is this okay?"
Michael glanced down at you and nodded. He was too shy to trust his own voice.
The warmth of your body against his made his heart pound so loudly he was convinced you could hear it. His cheeks burned, and he silently prayed you wouldn't notice.
After a long moment, he gathered every ounce of courage he had and pressed the gentlest kiss to the top of your head.
You simply smiled, already half-asleep. When you realized you were beginning to drift off against his shoulder, you sat up with a sleepy smile.
"I think I'm gonna head to the guest room now..."
Michael nodded, trying not to sound disappointed.
"Of course." He smiled softly. "I got you new bedding. It's a lot softer than the old one... I hope you like it."
Your heart warmed.
He always remembered the little things.
"Thank you, Mikey..." you whispered.
Leaning over, you pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.
"Goodnight."
His cheeks flushed a rosy pink.
"...G-Goodnight," he mumbled shyly.
You quietly made your way toward the guest room, already knowing the route by heart after spending countless nights at his house.
Just as you reached the hallway, you heard soft footsteps behind you.
You turned around. Michael stood there, nervously rocking back and forth on his heels. "Going to bed too?" you asked.
"Y-Yeah..." He hesitated before rubbing the back of his neck. "But... I wanted to ask you something."
You waited patiently.
"...Would you maybe..." He looked everywhere except at you. "...sleep in my room tonight?" His voice became almost embarrassingly quiet.
"My bed's bigger." He quickly held up his hands. "I won't do anything, I promise. I just..." His shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "...wanted to be close to you."
You couldn't help but smile. "But what about the new bedding you bought me?" you teased. "How am I supposed to try it?"
Michael let out a sheepish laugh, his ears turning red.
"I-I mean..." He rubbed the back of his neck again. "It's not like the bedding's going anywhere."
"Sure, Mike."
You waited for him to catch up.
His face lit up so brightly he nearly skipped to the bedroom, hurrying ahead to open the door for you like it was the most important task in the world.
You both climbed beneath the covers.
Careful not to make you uncomfortable, Michael quietly placed a pillow between the two of you, creating a respectful little barrier.
The gesture made you smile.
"...Goodnight."
"Goodnight," he whispered.
Within minutes, your breathing slowed into a peaceful rhythm.
Michael kept his eyes shut, pretending to be asleep for just a little longer before cautiously opening them.
His gaze drifted to you. There you were...
Asleep. In his bed.
His heart fluttered.
The moment felt intimate, yet somehow completely innocent. He didn't look at you with longing born from desire.
He looked at you the way someone looks at a wish they never quite believe will come true. He wondered if you'd ever know just how much space you occupied in his heart.
Smiling to himself, he reached over only far enough to feel the skin of your cheek with his thumb.
"Goodnight..." he whispered again, so quietly that only the darkness could hear.
He lay back down and closed his eyes, determined to get some sleep. It lasted all of thirty seconds. His eyes fluttered open again, instinctively drifting toward you.
A small smile found its way onto his lips. Every few minutes, he stole another glance, as if he needed to reassure himself you were really there.
He couldn't understand how one person could be so beautiful. How simply being near you could make his heart feel so impossibly full.
Eventually, exhaustion won.
His eyelids grew heavy, and he finally surrendered to sleep. The last thing he saw before sleep claimed him was your peaceful face.
And the first thing he hoped to see when morning came...
...was you.
The next morning arrived quietly, the first rays of sunlight bleeding through the blinds and spilling across the room.
As soon as the warmth brushed against his face, Michael groaned and turned onto his side, pulling the blanket up a little higher. For a brief moment, he managed to drift back to sleep.
A sleepy giggle reached his ears.
His eyes flew open. He turned his head toward you, only to find you blinking awake with puffy eyes and hopelessly messy bed hair.
You looked half-asleep, your face still soft from sleep.
His heart melted.
God...How could someone be so beautiful?
Even in the earliest hours of the morning, with sunlight spilling across your face and sleep still clinging to your eyes, Michael couldn't imagine anyone more beautiful.
He smiled to himself. He hoped he'd get to wake up to this for the rest of his life.
"Good morning," you said, stretching your arms over your head as you yawned.
Michael could only look at you in awe.
He couldn't look away, even if he wanted to. He couldn't even fall back asleep despite having a reputation for being extremely difficult to wake up.
You remembered you had a date planned for today, so you told Michael you were going to head home.
"I'm gonna get going, okay? I have a date planned."
Michael's heart sank. "...A date." He forced a small smile. "I hope you have fun."
You slipped out of bed, the excitement evident on your face, and Michael couldn't help but smile. You looked so beautiful when you were happy, even if it hurt knowing he wasn't the reason for it.
"Michael..." you called, turning back toward him. "Could you help me pick out my outfit?"
He nodded, already climbing out of bed. "I'd love to!" A grin spread across his face. "Let's go together!"
Once the both of you got to your home, you had spent the last hour getting ready, standing in front of the hallway mirror as you adjusted your outfit one final time. Michael sat on the couch, pretending to flip through a magazine.
"You think this looks okay?" you asked, smoothing out the fabric of your dress.
His head snapped up almost immediately.
"You look..." He swallowed. "You look beautiful."
You beamed. "Really?" He nodded without hesitation.
"You always do."
The smile you gave him made his heart ache.
"Thanks, Mikey!" You hurried over and kissed his cheek before grabbing your purse. "Wish me luck!"
He smiled back. "Luck!"
The front door closed and silence settled over the house. Michael stared at the door for a long time.
He imagined another man making you laugh. Pulling your chair out for you. Listening to your stories. Walking you home.
He hoped he treated you kindly. He hoped he remembered to compliment your smile. He hoped he noticed the way your eyes crinkled when you laughed.
He hoped he made you feel safe, because you deserved nothing less. A shaky breath escaped him as ge felt tears rimming his eyes.
He wasn't angry.
He wasn't jealous.
He was heartbroken. Sad that someone else got to discover all the little things he'd been in love with for years.
He glanced toward the clock.
"I hope she's having fun." He meant it, however it didn't stop his chest from hurting.
After your date, he dropped you off at home, and the first thing you did was head straight for the phone.
It only rang once before Michael picked up.
"Hello?"
"Michael... hey."
At the sound of your voice, Michael immediately perked up.
"Hey! So... how'd your date go?"
You sighed.
"It was... fine."
Michael frowned, noticing the dullness in your voice.
"Just fine? What happened?"
You stayed quiet for a moment, absentmindedly fiddling with the phone cord.
"It just... wasn't how I expected it to go, really."
"Oh..."
"He was nice, but..." You paused. "I guess there just wasn't a spark."
Michael's heart ached. Not because you hadn't fallen for another man. But because you hadn't enjoyed yourself.
You had looked so beautiful when you left that morning. He had wanted you to feel just as special as you looked.
"I..." He hesitated, his palms suddenly growing sweaty. "I could take you out."
The words slipped out before he could stop them.
You blinked. "It's so late... and you're a busy guy."
He swallowed. "I want to." His voice was quiet but sincere.
"You looked really beautiful today." He smiled to himself. "I'd hate for that to go to waste on a boring date."
A smile slowly spread across your face. "...As long as you don't mind."
"I don't." He smiled. "I never could."
Michael took you to an arcade filled with fun digital games and little competitions.
After winning game after game, he proudly handed you a stuffed ladybug with giant sparkly eyes.
"Here," he said, holding it out to you. "Now you'll always have a ladybug with you."
You tilted your head, accepting the plush.
"Why would I need a ladybug with me all the time?"
He smiled shyly. "They're good luck." He gave a small shrug, suddenly feeling self-conscious under your gaze. "I just... thought it'd be nice."
When the arcade finally closed, Michael drove you back home.
He held your hand the entire walk to your front door.
"Thank you, Michael." You smiled warmly. "You always know what I need."
He looked down at his feet shyly before meeting your eyes again.
"Of course." A small smile tugged at his lips. "I'd do anything for you."
The way he said it made your heart flutter. Before you realized it, your eyes drifted down to his lips. You had unknowingly stepped a little closer to him.
Michael's breath caught in his throat when he noticed. His hand immediately grew clammy.
"U-Uh..."
He could only manage a nervous filler word as he held his breath. You leaned in and closed the gap between your lips
It was nothing more than a short kiss.
Neither of you knew what it meant, but it felt right.
"Goodnight, Mike."
Michael could only nod, mumbling something that vaguely sounded like "goodnight" in return.
He stood there, watching as you stepped inside your house. Before closing the door, you turned back and offered him one last small wave.
He smiled and waved back, his heart still racing from the kiss.
The last few nights had been quiet. Michael had been busy with the overwhelming success of Thriller while also beginning work on his next album.
He wanted to hear your voice. He wanted to call you. But he was too nervous.
What had that kiss meant to you?
He didn't know.
And for a little while, he didn't want to know. The answer came before he was ready.
You called him one afternoon, your voice as cheerful as ever, to tell him that the same man who hadn't given you any sparks on your first date was now your significant other.
Michael's heart ached. The kiss, to you, had been nothing more than a fleeting moment.
"I'm... really happy for you."
And he meant it.
After hanging up, Michael slowly placed the phone back on its receiver. The house suddenly felt much quieter than before.
He looked down at his hand.
It was the same hand that had held yours only a few nights ago.
He let out a small, humorless laugh.
"...Guess I read too much into it." He couldn't bring himself to go back to work.
Instead, he sat down in his chair, his mind slowly beginning to drift. Even in the quiet of his thoughts, they always found their way back to you.
To the scent of your hair.
To the color of your nail polish.
To the feeling of his hand resting gently on your waist as he kissed your pretty lips, a kiss that had apparently meant absolutely nothing to you. While his whole world had shifted.
He couldn't do much after the phone call. He simply went upstairs to his room and gently closed the door behind him.
He lay on his bed, curling into himself as he thought of you. He curled up even tighter, the mattress sinking beneath his weight.
The painful feeling of loneliness settled deep into his bones, as though it had been waiting for him all along.
He knew, logically, that he hadn't lost you. You were still his best friend. You still called him. You still trusted him.
But deep in his heart, the loneliness he had always carried came rushing back, aching with every beat of his heart.
For a fleeting moment, an ugly thought crept into his mind. He hoped every genuine act of kindness, every ounce of love he had ever given you, would linger in your heart long enough to haunt you.
It was a cruel thought. A selfish one.
He hated himself for it almost as soon as it crossed his mind.
Still.
He let himself sit with it for just a moment.
He had always felt as though something was missing inside him, something everyone else seemed to have.
And now...Someone else had his whole world.
The thought settled over him, slowly numbing his mind.
As small tears of hurt soaked into his pillow, he slowly tried to convince himself to accept it.
To accept it.
Even though, deep down, he wasn't okay with it.
He was the way he was because, growing up, he had been laughed at whenever he cried or got upset.
Even now, he could still feel the phantom stares.
He could still hear the laughter. They were all going to laugh at him.
He'd done nothing but wait.
Wait for your love.
Wait for you to look his way.
Wait for you to open up.
Wait.
Wait.
Waiting.
What was he waiting for?
He felt so embarrassed. Embarrassed that he had convinced himself you'd love him back. Embarrassed that he'd ever believed he could have you.
Part of him wished he'd never told you anything about himself. Another part wished he'd told you even more.
He knew he couldn't move on from you. You still held his heart in your hands. And for now, that was okay.
It was enough.
The heaviness didn't just weigh on his chest. It weighed on his mind, his legs, his back. Until he felt stitched to the mattress.
He had always been afraid of being alone.
But now, another thought slowly crept into his mind.
Who had ever been afraid of losing him?
He wished he'd never felt that glimmer of excitement if it only meant feeling this agonizing disappointment.
If he always expected the worst, then the only surprises left would be the good ones.
His thoughts slowly fogged over, and his dry, tired eyes eventually drifted shut as exhaustion finally settled in.
You didn't know when it started. You only knew something had changed. You caught yourself waiting for the little things he used to do without thinking.
Waiting for him to kiss your cheek before you left. Waiting for him to ask if you wanted to stay the night. Waiting for him to jokingly get down on one knee with some random object in his hand and ask, "Will you marry me?" just to laugh when you rolled your eyes and called him ridiculous.
But he never did anymore. At first you thought he was just busy. Thriller had become something much bigger than either of you could have imagined, and with another album already in the works you figured his mind was elsewhere.
But even when he did have time, he didn't ask. He still called you. He still smiled at you. He still listened to every word you said with the same gentle attention he always had.
Yet there was a distance you couldn't explain. It wasn't cold. It wasn't cruel. It was almost respectful?
Like he had quietly taken one step back without telling you. One afternoon you excitedly showed him a new dress you'd bought, expecting the usual reaction.
He looked up from what he was doing and smiled warmly. "You look beautiful."
That was it. No flushed cheeks. No stumbling over his words. No looking away because you had caught him staring. Just a simple compliment.
You thanked him and smiled back, but as you walked away your chest felt strangely heavy. You couldn't understand why. It wasn't until another date ended with you feeling disappointed that you realized what was missing. You picked up the phone and called Michael like you always did. He answered on the first ring.
He listened. He told you that you deserved someone who appreciated you for everything you were. Then you both said goodbye. You stared at the receiver in your hand for a long moment.
Why didn't he ask to take you somewhere? Why didn't he offer to come over? Why didn't he ask if you wanted to spend the night?
You waited.
Minutes passed. The phone never rang again. It hit you then that he wasn't forgetting. He was choosing not to. He was respecting the answer you had given him all those years. You suddenly missed every little thing you had once taken for granted.
The way he'd hold your hand without thinking. The way he'd always somehow know exactly what you needed. The arcade dates. The stuffed ladybug still sitting on your shelf. The shy little kisses to your forehead and cheek.
The ridiculous proposals that used to make you laugh. You missed him. Not the version of him everyone else knew.
Your Michael.
The one who loved you so quietly that you'd mistaken it for friendship. And for the first time in your life, you wondered why he had stopped asking.
Two months had passed since then. You and Michael had fallen back into your usual routine as if nothing had ever happened.
Tonight was no different. The two of you sat shoulder to shoulder on his couch, some old movie playing on the television while neither of you paid much attention to it. You found yourself glancing at him every now and then without meaning to. You weren't even sure why.
A small part of you kept waiting for it. Waiting for him to suddenly grin, grab your hand, and jokingly ask, "Will you marry me?" like he always used to. You waited through one scene. Then another. Nothing.
Your eyes drifted back to him again, almost expectantly, until he noticed. Michael turned his head, his brows knitting together ever so slightly. "What?" he asked softly, the corners of his lips curling into a small smile. Your face immediately grew warm.
"Nothing..." you mumbled, looking away far too quickly. You pretended to focus on the movie, but you couldn't hear a single word of it anymore. Why had you been waiting for him to ask? Why were you disappointed that he hadn't?
Your heart beat a little faster at the thought, and you quickly shook your head to yourself. No. That wasn't it. You were just used to it, that was all. It had become a silly little tradition between the two of you over the years.
You missed the joke. That was all it was. Had to be. You stole one last glance at him from the corner of your eye. Michael was completely focused on the movie now, completely unaware of the questions beginning to settle into your heart. You frowned to yourself. Why did that bother you so much?
Michael wasn't oblivious to the way you kept glancing at him. He noticed every single one. He just knew that if he looked back at you for too long, he'd find himself falling even deeper in love with you. As if that were even possible.
He had always been falling for you. Every smile, every laugh, every moment the two of you shared only made him love you more. But you were taken. He respected that. So instead, he kept his eyes on the television, pretending to be interested in the movie while your lingering glances burned softly against the side of his face.
You felt strangely vulnerable.
The distance Michael had quietly begun putting between the two of you was slowly numbing you.
Was it really possible that his lack of affection was bothering you this much?
Without even realizing it, the vulnerability began to show. Your features softened, your expression tinged with quiet confusion and an innocent kind of hurt.
You felt needy. An excessive, selfish desire for more. More than you needed. More than you deserved.
Greedy.
A word so often painted as something ugly, something shameful. Yet, somehow, it perfectly described the vulnerability settling inside your heart.
You didn't want respect.
You didn't want fairness.
You didn't want him to keep his distance simply because you were in a relationship.
You wanted Michael.
You tried to focus on the movie, but something you'd been repressing for so long began to bubble to the surface.
You felt. Hurt. Disappointed.
Suddenly, everything felt too tight. You became hyperaware of his shoulder brushing against yours, the steady sound of his breathing, the absentminded way he'd tap his leg whenever he was focused.
You wanted him to ask you those silly questions again. You wanted him to pull one of his ridiculous pranks.
You wanted him to laugh. But everything just felt so distant.
You felt as though there was no air left in the room. You wanted to leave. To run from it all.
You looked at him again. The painful sting of tears pricked at your eyes.
God...You felt so embarrassed by your soft heart.
"I think I'll go home early, Mike."
He immediately looked over at you. "Oh..." He gave a small nod. "Okay. Let me walk you out."
You blinked your tears away. He didn't ask you to stay. He didn't try to convince you otherwise.
That felt like the final nail in the coffin of your spiraling thoughts.
Michael stood and walked you to the door.
You slipped your shoes back on before looking up at him.
He really was beautiful.
His baby face had softened with age, and his afro had long since given way to loose curls that he was beginning to style differently. It suited him.
"I like your hair like this," you said before you could stop the words from slipping out.
The compliment immediately flushed him with shyness.
"Yeah?" He smiled bashfully. "I'm trying to grow it out..."
You nodded.
"I have a really good hair oil, by the way." You hesitated. "If you ever want to come over sometime... like before..."
Michael glanced around for a moment, avoiding your gaze.
"Sure..." A small smile tugged at his lips. "I'd love to."
A week later, your phone rang just after lunch. You smiled the moment you heard Michael's voice on the other end.
"You still have that hair oil?" he asked shyly. You couldn't help but laugh. "I was wondering when you'd ask." Not even an hour later, he was standing at your front door, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket with that familiar bashful smile.
"Hi," he greeted quietly. "Hi, Mike." You stepped aside to let him in before leading him to a chair in the living room. "Sit still," you teased as you disappeared down the hallway, returning with a towel draped over your arm and a small bottle of oil in your hand.
"You make this sound so serious," he laughed. "It is serious." You smiled, gently draping the towel over his shoulders. "I'm trusting you with my hair," he replied, making you grin. You stood behind him, your fingers hesitating for only a second before carefully slipping into his curls. You knew exactly where to be gentle.
Your touch slowed instinctively as you reached the burn on the side of his scalp, separating each section with careful fingers, making sure never to tug or catch the delicate skin. Michael's shoulders slowly relaxed beneath your hands. Neither of you spoke for a while.
The room became so quiet that all he could hear was the faint rustle of your fingers moving through his hair and the occasional soft clink of the bottle against your palm. You poured a little oil into your hand, warming it between your fingers before gently massaging it into his scalp in small circles.
Every movement was slow, patient, almost absentmindedly caring. You worked in small sections, taking each curl between your fingers and twirling it carefully back into shape before coating it with a little more oil. You smiled softly every time another curl sprang back into place.
"There..." you whispered more to yourself than to him. Michael closed his eyes without realizing it. He had never understood how something so ordinary could feel so impossibly intimate.
There was no rush in your hands. No hesitation. Just years of trust stitched into every careful touch. You treated his scars as though they were something precious to protect rather than something to avoid.
His breathing slowed. He wanted to remember everything, the warmth of your fingertips, the faint scent of the hair oil lingering in the air, the way you hummed quietly to yourself whenever you were concentrating. He wondered if you realized how gently you loved people. You finished another curl, letting it bounce lightly against his temple before moving on to the next.
"Am I hurting you anywhere?" you asked quietly. Michael shook his head almost immediately. "...No." His voice came out softer than he'd intended. "It feels nice."
Your lips curved into a small smile as you continued, completely unaware that with every careful stroke of your fingers, you were making it that much harder for him to remember why he'd promised himself to stop falling in love with you.
"Do you have anything planned today?" you asked as you finished working the last curl around your finger. Michael thought for a moment before shaking his head. "No... not really."
You smiled to yourself. "Do you... maybe want to go to the pediatric center together? We haven't gone in forever." Michael's heart warmed almost instantly.
The pediatric center had always been one of your favorite places to visit together. Seeing the children smile always made the both of you forget everything else for a little while. "Sure," he answered without hesitation, unable to hide the smile spreading across his face. "I'd love to."
You grinned. "After I rinse this out, okay?" He nodded obediently as you led him into the bathroom.
The moment you looked at the sink, you laughed. "Wait... this isn't going to work." Michael awkwardly leaned himself backward over the sink anyway, trying to help. "Like this?" "Mike..." you laughed harder, trying to keep the bottle of shampoo from slipping out of your hands. "You're going to break your back."
"I'm fine!" he insisted, stretching even farther until there was a loud thunk. "...Ouch." He immediately reached for his temple after lightly bumping it against the faucet. You stared at him for a second before bursting into laughter.
"Michael!" He started laughing too, rubbing the side of his head. "I didn't think it was that close!" You were laughing so hard you had to lean against the counter for a moment. "Stay right there. I'm getting you a chair before you hurt yourself again."
A few moments later he was finally sitting comfortably, the back of his head resting over the sink while you adjusted the water to a comfortable temperature. "Better?" you asked. "Much better," he smiled sheepishly. You carefully began rinsing the oil from his curls, your fingers gliding gently through his hair to make sure every strand was clean. Whenever you reached the burn, your touch became even softer, your fingertips barely grazing his scalp as though you were afraid of causing him even the slightest discomfort.
Michael closed his eyes. The warm water, your careful hands, the quiet sound of your laughter still lingering in the room, he wished time would stop. You had always been gentle with him.
Even as children, you had instinctively known when to slow down, when to be careful, when to simply sit beside him without saying a word. He didn't think you'd ever understand just how much those little acts of kindness meant to him. Your fingers combed through another section of curls, separating them with the same patience you'd shown only minutes before, making sure none tangled together.
"You have such pretty curls," you murmured absentmindedly, more focused on your work than your words. Michael felt his heart ache so sweetly it almost made him smile. He had spent years trying to convince himself that one day he'd stop loving you. That eventually it would become easier. That one morning he'd wake up and your smile wouldn't be the first thing on his mind.
But as your fingers moved so carefully through his hair, treating every curl and every scar with such quiet tenderness, he realized something that both comforted and terrified him.
He was never going to stop falling in love with you.
You reached for the soft cotton towel hanging beside you and gently wrapped it around his curls. "Don't move," you smiled, carefully scrunching his hair upward to soak up the excess water without disturbing the curls you'd spent so long defining.
Michael sat unusually still, only his eyes following your every movement whenever you stepped into view. "You're being awfully obedient today," you teased. He laughed quietly. "I'm scared you'll hit my head on the faucet again." You giggled, continuing to scrunch each section with patient hands before your eyes drifted to the faint pink mark on his temple. "...Poor thing," you murmured.
Before either of you could think about it, you leaned down and pressed the gentlest kiss against the little spot. "For your boo-boo."
The words left your mouth as naturally as breathing. You pulled away just as quickly, completely unaware of what you'd done, already reaching for another section of curls.
Michael, however, had completely frozen. His breath caught somewhere deep in his chest, his heart stuttering so violently he was certain you could hear it. The room suddenly felt impossibly quiet. He slowly lifted his fingers to his temple, absentmindedly touching the place your lips had been only seconds before.
"...Thanks," he whispered, his voice barely audible. You simply smiled. "There. All better." You continued drying his hair as though nothing had happened, humming softly to yourself while carefully scrunching the last few curls.
Michael couldn't bring himself to speak again. His mind replayed the tiny kiss over and over, clinging to it despite knowing he shouldn't. To you, it had probably been nothing. A silly little gesture. The same way you'd patch up a scraped knee or ruffle a child's hair after they cried.
To him, it had felt like someone had gently stitched together a piece of his heart that he'd been trying so hard to convince himself was already healed. He closed his eyes for just a moment, a small smile finding its way onto his face.
I'm in so much trouble, he thought to himself. I'm never going to stop loving you.
The afternoon had passed just like it always used to. You and Michael walked through the pediatric center carrying little bags filled with toys, flowers, coloring books, and stuffed animals, stopping at every room you could. Michael laughed as a little boy insisted on showing him every dinosaur he owned while you helped a little girl braid flowers into the hair of her favorite doll.
Teh nurses smiled as the two of you wandered from room to room, already familiar with your faces after so many visits over the years. It always made your heart feel lighter seeing the children smile.
On the drive home, the both of you talked about which child had made you laugh the most, Michael animatedly telling you about the dinosaur facts he'd been taught while you teased him for pretending not to know the names already. He laughed so hard he had to wipe a tear from the corner of his eye.
Before either of you realized it, his car had come to a stop outside your house. "Thanks for today," you smiled, gathering your things. "I missed this." Michael looked at you for a moment before smiling back. "Me too."
You opened the car door before turning back toward him. "Bye, Mike."
"...Bye." Before you could step away, he hesitated. Every part of him told him not to. He'd spent months trying to respect the distance between you, trying to ignore every instinct that told him to reach for you. But today had felt so familiar.
So normal.
Before he could stop himself, he leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss to your cheek. It only lasted a second. "...See you later," he whispered, pulling away almost immediately, looking as though he'd surprised himself more than you. Your cheeks warmed as a small smile spread across your face. "...See you." You climbed out of the car, unconsciously touching your cheek as you waved goodbye.
Michael waited until you disappeared inside before quietly driving away. The smile hadn't yet left your face as you stepped into your house. "Hey–" Your words caught in your throat. Your boyfriend was sitting on the couch, arms folded across his chest. He looked up at you. "You were with him again."
The warmth in your chest faltered. "...Yeah. We visited the pediatric center."
He nodded once. "You always seem to be with him." You frowned. "What does that mean?" He sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "It means every time I call you, you're with Michael. Every time you have free time, you're with Michael. Every story you tell somehow ends with Michael." His voice never rose.
If anything, it became quieter. "I don't think you even realize you do it." You stared at him, unable to answer. "He's my best friend."
"I know." He looked down at his hands. "That's what scares me." Silence settled between you. "You smile differently when you talk about him." Your heart skipped. "That's not true."
"Isn't it?" He met your eyes. There was no anger in his expression. Only hurt. "Tell me... when was the last time you looked at me the way you look at him?"
"I don't look at him differently..." you whispered, your voice lacking the confidence it usually carried. He held your gaze for a long moment before shaking his head.
"Yes, you do." You swallowed. "I don't." He sighed, exhaustion replacing the frustration in his eyes. "You look for him in me." The words made your heart sink. "Every time I do something nice, you smile...but it's never enough. Every time I try to make you laugh, you tell me about something Michael did that was funnier. Every time you're hurting..."
He looked away for a moment before quietly finishing, "...you call him." Tears began to sting your eyes.
"That's because he's my best friend."
"I know." He nodded slowly. "And when you look at him..." His voice cracked ever so slightly. "...he's all you see."
You opened your mouth to argue, but nothing came out. You couldn't find the words. Instead, your mind betrayed you. You saw Michael laughing as he held up the stuffed ladybug he'd won for you.
You saw him shyly looking away after you complimented his hair. You felt his curls slipping between your fingers as you carefully worked the oil into his scalp. You felt the tiny kiss you'd placed against his temple without even thinking.
You remembered waiting for him to ask you to marry him again. Waiting for him to ask you to stay. Waiting for him to reach for your hand. Waiting... for him.
"...You love him."
"No..." The answer left your lips almost instinctively. It sounded small. Fragile. Like even you didn't believe it.
He nodded sadly. "Yes, you do." A tear finally rolled down your cheek. "I didn't mean for this to happen..." you whispered, your voice trembling. "I didn't know."
"I know you didn't." He stepped closer, his expression softening. There wasn't any anger left anymore. Just heartbreak. "I don't think you ever wanted to hurt me." You covered your mouth with your hand as another tear escaped. "I'm so sorry." He gave you a small, tired smile.
"I'm not angry with you." The room fell silent. He looked around the little house the two of you had spent so much time in before meeting your eyes one last time.
"I just..." He let out a quiet breath. "...I deserve someone who looks at me the way you look at him."
Your heart shattered. Because for the first time, you knew exactly what he meant. Every lingering glance. Every disappointed feeling when Michael kept his distance. Every time you'd unconsciously searched for him in a crowded room. Every silly proposal you'd secretly wished he'd make again. It all crashed over you at once.
You love Michael.
You had for longer than you were willing to admit. The realization hurt almost as much as the guilt.
"I'm sorry," you cried again, unable to offer him anything else. He gently took your hands in his, giving them one last squeeze before letting them go. "Don't be." His smile was bittersweet. "Just... don't spend as long making him wait as you made me."
He walked past you, pausing only long enough to quietly close the front door behind him. You stood exactly where he'd left you, the silence of the house suddenly overwhelming. For the first time since you'd met Michael, you understood why every goodbye from him had hurt so much.
You were hurting. You knew you weren't in the right headspace to call Michael. But your fingers had already begun dialing his number before you could stop them.
The phone rang once. Then twice. Three times. It took longer than usual. You waited. And waited.
Finally, the line clicked. "Hello?" Michael's voice came through, slightly breathless. "Hey..." Your voice cracked almost immediately. You squeezed your eyes shut, trying to force the words out, but nothing came.
What could you possibly say? What were you even supposed to tell him? You could hear the worry growing in his voice with every passing second. "Hey...? Are you okay? What's wrong?" You tried to answer, but all that came out was a broken little sob.
"Hey... talk to me." His voice had become urgent now. "Did something happen? Are you hurt?"
You shook your head even though he couldn't see you. "...I..." Your breathing hitched. "I..." Michael's stomach twisted into knots. He had never heard you sound like this before. "I'm coming over." The line went dead before you could protest.
You stared at the receiver in disbelief before slowly lowering it back into place. You felt so stupid. So ridiculous.
Why had you even called him? What had you expected him to do? Barely ten minutes later, there was a hurried knock at your front door. You wiped desperately at your face before opening it. Michael stood there, still slightly out of breath, his hair messier than usual as though he'd left the house without even looking in a mirror.
The moment he saw your tear-stained face, his expression fell. "Oh..." he whispered. "Come here." You didn't even think. You stepped forward, burying your face against his shoulder as another sob escaped you. Michael immediately wrapped both arms around you, one hand gently cradling the back of your head while the other rubbed slow circles against your back.
He didn't ask any questions. He just held you. The two of you stayed like that in the doorway for what felt like forever until your breathing finally slowed enough for you to speak.
"...He..." You swallowed hard. "...He broke up with me." Michael closed his eyes for just a moment. His heart ached for two different reasons at once. He hated seeing you in so much pain and he hated himself for the tiny flicker of hope that had appeared somewhere deep inside him.
He buried that feeling immediately. This wasn't about him. It was about you.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered sincerely. You cried harder, gripping the front of his shirt as though letting go would make everything hurt even more. Michael gently guided you inside, never once letting go of your hand. The rest of the evening passed quietly. He made you tea you barely drank. He sat beside you while you cried until there were no tears left to cry. (Yuh)
He listened whenever you spoke and never interrupted, never tried to convince you to feel differently, never once said, I told you so.
As the night grew later, your words became fewer and farther between until exhaustion settled over you. "Mike..." you whispered sleepily. "...Will you stay?" He looked at you for a moment before giving the smallest nod. "Of course."
The two of you lay down on your bed in the same innocent way you had so many times over the years. This time, there was no pillow between you. You instinctively curled against his chest, too emotionally exhausted to think twice about it. Michael hesitated only for a second before carefully wrapping an arm around you, holding you as gently as though you might break if he held you any tighter.
His chin rested lightly against the top of your head. Neither of you spoke. He simply listened to your breathing gradually slow as sleep finally claimed you. Long after you'd fallen asleep, Michael remained awake, gently brushing a strand of hair away from your face.
"...I've got you," he whispered so quietly that only the silence of the room could hear him.
Morning came much too quickly. Soft sunlight slipped through the curtains, filling the room with a quiet warmth that neither of you noticed. Your eyes slowly fluttered open, your head still heavy from crying the night before.
For a brief moment, you forgot where you were. Then you felt the steady rise and fall of Michael's breathing beneath your cheek. His arm was still loosely wrapped around you exactly as it had been hours before. He hadn't moved. You looked up at him. He was still asleep, his curls falling over his forehead, his face softer than you'd ever seen it. You remembered what your ex had said.
You look for him in me. When you look at him... he's all you see. The words echoed through your mind until your chest tightened all over again.
A wave of panic settled over you. What if you lost Michael too? What if one day he grew tired of waiting? What if he stopped loving you the way he'd slowly taught himself to? The thought alone was unbearable. Before you could think, before you could stop yourself, you slowly lifted your hand to his cheek.
Michael stirred at the gentle touch, his eyes blinking open sleepily. "...Morning," he whispered, his voice still rough with sleep. You didn't answer. You only looked at him. His brows drew together slightly with concern. "What is it...?"
Your heart pounded painfully against your ribs. Without giving yourself another second to think, you leaned forward and pressed your lips against his. Michael froze.
For one moment, the years between you disappeared. Every childhood proposal. Every almost-confession. He kissed you back with the same tenderness he'd always imagined, one hand instinctively rising to cradle your face as though you were something impossibly precious.
It lasted only a few seconds. Then reality rushed back all at once. Michael slowly pulled away, his forehead resting lightly against yours as he tried to steady his breathing. His thumb brushed gently across your cheek before he reluctantly lowered his hand.
"...No," he whispered, more to himself than to you. You looked at him in confusion, your heart immediately sinking. Michael swallowed hard, forcing himself to meet your eyes even though it hurt. "I'm not..." He took a shaky breath. "...I'm not going to take advantage of your vulnerability."
Tears immediately welled in your eyes. "Mike..."
"You're hurting." His voice was impossibly gentle. "You just lost someone you cared about." He offered you the smallest, saddest smile. "If you kiss me... I need to know it's because you want me."
His hand slowly slipped away from yours, not because he wanted to let go, but because he knew he had to. "Not because you're afraid of being alone." Silence filled the room. Michael's heart was breaking all over again. Every part of him wanted to pull you back into another kiss. To finally have the one thing he'd dreamed about for years.
But loving you had never been about taking. It had always been about protecting you. Even if that meant protecting you from himself.
"I don't want to lose you." Your voice broke around the words, your fingers instinctively reaching for his sleeve before he could move any farther away.
Michael immediately caught your hand, holding it carefully between both of his. "You aren't," he answered softly. You shook your head, tears already beginning to blur your vision again. "But you will." He frowned. "What?"
"You'll fall for someone else." The thought alone made your chest ache. "You'll get married... you'll have a family... and one day I'll just be someone you used to know." Michael stared at you as though you had spoken a language he didn't understand.
Then, without thinking, a quiet, breathless laugh escaped him. Not because what you had said was funny but because it felt so impossible. He slowly shook his head. "I could never."
You searched his face, waiting for him to smile and tell you he was joking. He didn't. "Mike..."
"I could never," he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've tried." Your heart skipped. "I've tried to stop loving you." The confession settled between the two of you so gently that it almost didn't feel real.
"I thought if I gave you enough space... if I respected your relationship... if I stopped asking you those stupid little questions..." A small, bittersweet smile crossed his face. "...maybe one day I'd wake up and it wouldn't hurt anymore." He looked down at your joined hands. "It never happened."
You couldn't breathe. Michael continued quietly, never once letting go of your hand. "I kept thinking maybe I'd meet somebody. Maybe I'd fall in love with someone else. Maybe I'd finally understand what people meant when they said time heals everything." He let out another small laugh, this one tired. "Time only made me love you differently." Tears rolled silently down your cheeks.
"I stopped asking you to marry me because I thought it was unfair." He swallowed. "Every time I joked about it... there was a part of me that wasn't joking."
Your heart shattered painfully. "I stopped kissing your cheek because I knew I'd start hoping you'd kiss me back." He looked at you then, his eyes impossibly gentle. Neither of you spoke. The silence between you wasn't uncomfortable anymore. It was simply full. Full of everything that had gone unsaid for years.
Michael squeezed your hand ever so slightly. "So no..." he whispered. "I'm not going to fall for someone else." He smiled sadly. "I've been falling for the same girl since we were kids." His thumb gently brushed away one of your tears. "I just got better at pretending I wasn't."
Silence settled between the two of you once again. Neither of you moved. Neither of you seemed to know what came next. Your eyes drifted down to your joined hands before a small, tearful laugh escaped you.
"...I'm sorry." Michael immediately shook his head. "Don't."
"No..." you whispered, wiping at your eyes. "I'm sorry I made you wait so long." He looked at you as though the words themselves had stolen the air from his lungs.
You smiled through your tears, your heart aching for every birthday, every silly proposal, every cheek kiss, every stuffed animal he'd won you, every quiet goodbye, every moment he'd loved you while asking for nothing in return.
"I thought I knew what love was," you admitted softly. "I thought it was supposed to feel exciting... like butterflies... like sparks." You let out a shaky breath, looking into the eyes that had always looked at you with nothing but kindness. "But love..." Your fingers tightened around his. "...Love felt like calling you without thinking." Another tear slipped down your cheek. You couldn't say more. Because that was your love for him. Michael's own eyes began to glisten. You reached up and cupped his face with both hands, smiling sadly. "It was never the grand things, was it?" He could only shake his head. "...No."
You brushed your thumb across his cheek. The room fell quiet again. Your heart raced so loudly you were sure he could hear it. "...Would you ask me again?" Michael blinked.
"...Ask you what?" A watery laugh escaped you. "Don't make me say it." He stared at you for a long moment, almost afraid to breathe, as though speaking the words might wake him from a dream. His voice trembled. "...Will you marry me?"
This time, before doubt could find either of you, you smiled. .
"Yes."
Michael's eyes immediately filled with tears. A quiet laugh escaped him as he covered his face for a moment, completely overwhelmed. "You're serious?"
You laughed through your own tears. "I'm serious." He looked at you as though he were seeing the sunrise for the very first time before carefully pulling you into his arms. He held you tightly, almost afraid you'd disappear if he let go. You buried your face against his shoulder, smiling as his quiet laughter mixed with your own. Michael laughed, still holding you. "I had speeches."
"Really?"
"Hundreds." He smiled sheepishly. "...I forgot every single one." You laughed so hard your sides began to ache, and hearing that sound made him laugh even harder. When the laughter finally faded, he gently cupped your cheek putting his fingers behind your ear whike his thumb traced your skin then he leaned forward.
He kissed your forehead. Then your nose. Then, slowly, he rested his forehead against yours, silently asking one last time. You answered by closing the distance yourself.
The kiss was soft, unhurried, and years in the making. When you finally pulled away, neither of you said anything. You didn't have to. After all those years of waiting, of loving each other quietly from opposite sides of the same road, you always find your way back to him.
Finally looking his way.
