PYT - SKINATHON WEEK 1 ( HEADER, SIDEBAR, BOARD STATS )

i’m so incredibly excited to participate in skinathon this time around! unfortunately (and expectedly), i’m already running a bit behind lol. as you can see, everything is at least laid out, properly positioned and put into place. i still need to get userlinks and group changes installed, but luckily that doesn’t take much time! i’d also love to get a slideshow or tabbed feature going for the news module, but we’ll see how that goes.

regardless, without further ado, welcome to pretty young thing!, my project for this skinathon! this design comes from a recently dropped commission and was mutually rejected early on in the process (it just wasn’t working for client’s needs), but i thought it’d be a fun thing to tackle for skinathon since it features many different things i’ve never done before. i’m really excited to challenge myself, learn new things, and (hopefully) have a completed skin by the end of the month! cross your fingers for me? ♡

HOGWARTS U - PREMADE PREVIEW

some older followers may recognize this one a bit, but here’s a slightly more in-depth preview of an upcoming premade in the works! this skin will include all base features i offer as well as premium group changes (with five matching colors included), last poster’s avatars, and a profile application (with the option of a non-application profile if preferred). a full set of site templates will be available for an extra cost!

Why I’m doing unlimited sales on my recent skin.

Since this is going around tumblr and some discords I’m in, I thought I would share my reasoning for putting up my Magique skin as an unlimited sale, rather than having a limited amount of slots a most multi-sales have.

As someone who is probably one of the first, if not the first, skinner to put a skin on sale with unlimited slots, it wasn’t something I did without careful consideration into the potential risks involved: less control over who has my product or fewer skins sold. But after numerous discussions with my fellow coders and purchasers, it seems that, for the most part, those buying skins aren’t doing it for the exclusivity of the product, but for the quality of the skin. My view is that if you want a limited or wholly exclusive skin, you should be willing to pay for a commissioned skin or learn how to code yourself. Part of it is that I do believe if people want to purchase a skin, they should be allowed to purchase it.

As both @minnieskins and @alicecodes have eloquently touched on in the past, we coders in the JCINK community undersell ourselves to keep up with a competitive market. The time and energy it takes to code a skin from scratch are worth far than the typical $250 for a single sale or the $50-$65 for a multi-sale, but if we have to keep prices low to keep up with a competitive market.

I genuinely don’t think non-coders understand how much time it takes to build a skin from scratch. Though my process may be different than other coders, I have been working on my most recent skin a minimum of 7 hours a week since the end of December. When I code a skin, I don’t start with a base, I start with an empty css: everything from the header to .row4 is coded from the ground up. From font, color, graphic selection to coding variables, to mock-ups in codepen, to transferring everything over JCINK, beta testing, and remembering all the little details. The number of people who have access to a skin does not take away from how much time and effort I put into coding, which is why I don’t plan on selling my skins for anything less than what I know they are worth.

I do believe that this is the next step in skin sales. I do not think skinners should undersell ourselves. If a coder is upfront from the beginning about a skin sale being unlimited, then there shouldn’t be any issues. If a purchaser doesn’t like it, they don’t need to buy it.

shani makes some excellent points here and i 100% agree that this should become the next step within the skinning community. this sort of business model has been around for quite a bit with tumblr themes and it really does seem to work well. if you want something completely exclusive, commission someone for your one-of-a-kind design. if a commission is too pricey for you (and for many it really is), then maybe think of trading some of that exclusivity for the lower price. you’re still getting a high quality product but for a fraction of the price! all that being said, i’m still working on some commissions for the moment, but i’ve been playing around with the idea of potentially selling non-exclusive premades for lower prices. if this is something my followers may be interested in, please let me know!

hey guys! with the year coming to an end, i want to take the time to look back at what i’ve done so far and start looking forward to potential things to come. i’m so incredibly thankful for all the support i’ve been given throughout the year! i went into this with no real clue if i’d get even one commission, so this has been so amazing and fun for me. i’m so appreciative for every last one and i can’t wait to see what fun and new things i’ll be doing in the upcoming year!

i’ve been brainstorming some new and fun ideas for sharing more content this next year! i’ve been playing around with the idea of subscriptions on ko-fi or putting up a patreon page. subscribers would pay a small amount a month to gain access to some fun things like exclusive templates, behind the scenes previews, first dibs on premades, or maybe an exclusive discord server? i think it could be fun but it’s only something i’d want to put a focus on if it’s something my followers would be interested in!

all this being said, i want to hear from you guys! would you be interested in a subscription service? if so, how much would you be willing to pay a month and what kind of things would you like access to? and outside of this subscription talk, what kind of stuff would you like to see here on this blog? let me know if there’s anything that’s been mentioned above that you’d like to see outside of subscription services as well!

hey! i’m going to be a little real with you guys right now. my family’s really struggling financially at the moment and while we’re able to scrape by and cover our absolute necessities (food, electric, etc) i’m unfortunately (really) short on my phone bill this month. we don’t have internet/wifi services at the moment, so i rely on my phone’s hotspot services to be able to work on commissions while my brother relies on it for his homework. it’s due tomorrow (12/4/19) after me begging for at least 3 extensions, so...

i’m going on a small commission spree tomorrow! all small commissions that come in (templates, shippers, etc) will be aimed to be completed within a few hours vs my normal turnaround time of a few days. just please keep in mind this doesn’t apply to full skins! honestly, if i can just get 10 clients to commission a $10 template/set, i’ll be all good!
