Q: How did you become a trainee? 

JH: I have never thought [of] wanting to be a celebrity. I received a casting request while I was attending acting school. It was during my 2nd year of high school. To be honest I auditioned not because I wanted to be a singer, but more so to train my confidence, so I wouldn’t be nervous during my college entrance exam. But I was contacted by the company after [the] auditions and that was how I became a trainee. 

Q: What kind of student were you?  JH: Mmm, I was the quiet type. I don’t cause too much trouble nor am I too careful/sensitive, I’d say I’m just a normal male student attending school. 

 Q: How did your interest in acting start? JH: My grades in school is rather in the middle, so it would be quite difficult for me to get into the university I wanted. I started thinking of what I could do in the future, I tried to expand my knowledge in coffee but my parents were very strongly against me being a Barista. Then my friend asked me if I would join him attending acting school. I couldn’t have done it if it was me alone but since my friends asked me to, I gave it a try. It was more like playing around, but I got casted during that time. 

Q:You weren’t planning on becoming a singer. Trainee life isn’t easy too, at first you probably have concerns about that. JH: i thought of giving up once twice or thrice I cry everyday when I call my mom and I told her that I want to quit and I can’t do this anymore. I also called the school principal that I want to quit. But then I [found] out that I’ve become a member of Seventeen and I can’t quit at that time. Then I perform on concert and I heard the audience screaming, I feel proud and happy after the performance - and I like that feeling. So I eventually stopped thinking about giving up. After I practice and practice again for 2 years, I became tired. Ah, I have so much concerns but at that time I can’t leave. After I practice and practice again, the thoughts of leaving were eventually gone. And I get to debut. 

Q: What was the toughest thing during your trainee days? JH: There is no specific time where it was the toughest, but it does appear once in a while. It’s always tough when my friends call me and they’re having fun but I’m alone practicing. I’ve sometimes wanted to stop being a trainee just so I could join them. But I don’t join them much and [put?] out my heart into training harder. 

Q: Did the members know about it since you all live together? JH: That is one of the reasons I couldn’t leave… It’s good that we are all together.
