    Alice sat behind the warehouse, looking out into the world. Looking, but not seeing. Her eyes fell on nothing but darkness. There were times— most times— where it made her feel claustrophobic, like it was swallowing her up. She knew it was a bad idea to sit outside when they had perfectly good shelter, but it helped her feel like she could actually breathe. 

    She had let her thoughts fall into a comforting, dull static of nothingness when she heard noise to her left. Alice turned her head in the direction she’d heard the noise. “If you’re here to lecture me about being outside, save your breath.” She said to the figure, who was nothing but a shadow to her at the moment. 

she knew that it was stupid to want to be outside.  not only for her own safety but for the safety of the others.  if she were to become infected she knew that she would try and see eli one last time.  which would do more harm than good.  she had been outside for a few minutes, trying to allow her eyes to adjust to the darkness.  she felt so small looking into the black void of the new world.  she wondered if she would have given up when things first happened.  no.  she probably would have locked herself away not trusting those around her.  her breath hitched as she realized how much she has changed since meeting her husband;  how she never wanted to go back to her old self.  the person who didn’t bother to try and get to know those around her and thought that she could take on the world alone.  she knew now that bracing the world with the one you love was a gift not to be taken for granted.  

she started to head back.  her finger lightly trailing along the warehouse exterior.  there was a sense of excitement building in her stomach.  it would be so easy to lift her finger and try and go for a short jog.  to allow herself to be swallowed by the unknown.  she would never do that,  she would never do that to eli.  but it was still intoxicating to flirt with danger --- or to daydream about flirting with danger.  she tried to be silent, but she momentarily stumbled.  the illusion of trying to run in the dark was shattered in an instant.  

the voice startled her, and for a second she felt herself turn to stone.  “not really in a place to lecture,” she said with through a side smile.  “it’s nice just to get out of the warehouse for a bit.  it can be a bit...stuffy in there.” she continued.  she sat next to her pulling her knees towards her body.  “i just wish i could go for a jog.  jogging inside doesn’t have the same feel of running outside.”
