biography
Joanna was born in her parentโs bedroom in the heart of coal country, West Virginia. With an older brother to follow around, Jo spent her childhood exploring the Appalachian hills where her dad and their neighbors descended into the earth in search of black gold. Though the paychecks only stretched as far as the end of the month, Joannaโs childhood was one full of authentic experiences, familial love, and hard earned rewards. Her fatherโs rough hand ruffling her hair, her motherโs infamous pound cake, her brotherโs keen ears listening for the sound of a scarlet tanager. It was far from idyllic, but it was hers and that was good enough.ย
ย A couple of army recruiters made frequent visits to her small high school. The country was going to war, and to a young, rather naive, Joanna, the promise of travel, camaraderie and heroics drew her in. Days after graduating she enlisted in the United Stated Army and shipped off to South Carolina.ย
Joanna quickly came to learn that womenโs roles in the military were fairly limited. She could have a number of non-combat military occupational specialties, or rather, ordinary jobs done under the army banner. But she wanted more. With a natural aptitude and interest in psychology she turned her focus to intelligence and cultural affairs. If she couldnโt see direct combat, she would do so peripherally. With a few years of intense specialized training, Jo joined a special operations team stationed in the Middle East as an intelligence officer and cultural liaison.ย
Her active service spanned 8 years, ending after a routine engagement with an informant went sideways. The attack left her with an amnesiac traumatic brain injury and labeled as missing in action. Joanna spent nearly a year in custody, a span of time that has resisted all memory recovery efforts. Joanna was eventually returned home in a prisoner exchange, but the woman who came home was never quite the same. She spent the following years undergoing psychological repair, and although she transitioned into a domestic role, she had grown disillusioned. When her contract ended, Joanna did not reenlist and was discharged with valor awards. With her sights set on bettering her own soil, she was soon sworn in was an FBI agent. Her background in intelligence, and foreign led Joanna to specialize in organized crime, and sheโs been there, moving from place to place ever since.ย
New York presents its own set of challenges, of memories best left in the past, of people she thought sheโd never cross paths with again, and a case that may prove insurmountable.ย
wanted connections
Joanna has been around the block a few times and there is a good chance she's run into your muse! I left her timeline vague on purpose so if you're interested in having a connection from the past lets see what we can make happen!
Calling all journalists, detectives, bartenders, politicians, civilians... basically everyone? She's here to investigate, so she'll be seeking out leads and connections and suspicious characters. Maybe your character wants to get on her good side, work out a deal? Be her little birdie? Or they've got something to hide and she wants to sniff it out. The possibilities are endless.
If there are any ex-military characters there is definitely room for some former comrades in arms.
I will keep ruminating, but really I am open to anything and would love to make something up with all of your wonderful muses.
