Let's hear it for North America's largest surviving terrestrial animal, the bison! Bison are commonly called buffalo, derived from the French “bœuf,” a name given to bison when French fur trappers working in the US in the early 1600s first saw the animals. 40 million bison once roamed the plains, and were down to 325 animals in 1884 due to mass destruction by humans. Conservation efforts have raised that number to 500,000 today. Mad props to this distinctive American icon, making a comeback and gracing the cover of Suketchi #12!
