as someone who loves Lohen but hates yanderes due to them being a mild trigger and such itâs so funny to me that half of his fandom is obsessed itâs him being a yandere, I personally donât believe heâd be (not exactly related to my dislike of them) but I do hope some more non yandere Lohen fic writers come along soon
Hi, I drew fanart for your Kitsune Heizou a while ago and Iâm back with stuff for Vampire Heizou!
I tried to look for a Japanese equivalent to a vampire but couldnât find any, so I figured Iâd keep his design similar enough to in-gameâŚAnyways Iâm not experienced with comic stuff so this helped me practice, I hope you like it!
OU MY GOD?? THIS IS SO COOL??? The comic panel at the end is insane. The lighting, the close-up, and the way you referenced his in-game pose⌠omgzjdorvskskf. Itâs so so so so cool. Thank you so much for drawing it! (I also remember that kitsune!Heizou fanart which was banger as well)
Iâve actually been thinking of my own design for him, too, which I might post at some point â itâs really funny because I also had the collar layered the opposite way to show heâs dead!
Also a mini side-note but I really love how you draw his hair
a/n: I wrote this a couple years ago when I was on vacation in a tropical place. I felt ill after sleeping in the sun which sparked inspiration for this piece! Itâs old tho⌠;-;
Themes: fluff, sickfic? Venti/reader, [Name] instead of Y/N, could be interpreted as platonic or romantic, this is old and does not reflect my current writing skill, uhhhhh idk what else to add
You slowly flop down onto your bed and curl up in a ball towards the window. You feel dead. Stomach feeling ill, your skin feels hot, your head feels stuffed and youâre feeling exhausted. You wave your hand at the boy sitting in his bed behind you.
âHey, Venti?â You ask tiredly. He looks up from the book heâs reading at you.
âYes, [Name]?â You roll over to face him.
âI donât feel wellâŚâ You blink slowly and open them to see Venti studying you carefully. He then closes his book and gets up to sit over by your legs on your bed.
âWhatâs the matter?â He asks softly. You recall the day that had just passed: Walking around the gardens, finding cool - looking lizards on the plants nearby, collecting shells and rocks and running around in the water under the cloudless sky. You recall how you took a nap under the blazing hot sun while Venti admired the horizon for an hour. You remember how you swam around colourful fish, rays and the like in the crystal green waters. You think about how stood up from your sandy bed, feeling slightly dizzy and nauseous. It hits you.
âI may have gotten heatstroke.â You said, pointing to your head tiredly. He looked at you in pity. He leans over and strokes your head gently.
âAwwâŚDo you need anything? I can get you whatever you need.â He shifts slightly closer to you. You ponder on his question for a moment.
âWater? I thinkâŚIâm not hungry I justâŚâ you sighed.
âNeed to rest comfortably for a bit. Maybe sleep. Iâm not entirely sure how a heatstroke works, Venti.â You sit up, or at least, try to. Venti pushes you back down slowly. He smiles.
âYour wish is in my command, [Name]! You shall receive your water.â He declares in a announcing voice. You laugh and shove him playfully.
âAll right, all right. Iâll be back then.â Venti giggles. He stands to leave the room before you grab his sleeve.
âWait-â you begin. He pauses.
âCould you sit beside me when you come back?â You ask quietly. He stares at you for a few moments before nodding happily. He walks out of the room and leaves the door half open. You can hear him take a cup from the cupboard and start running the sink in the distance. After a few seconds, he returns and places the cup on your nightstand with a dramatic flourish. He was trying to cheer you up, and itâs working. You sit up and take the cup of water and hold it near your lap as Venti sits to your left right beside you. You quietly sip from the water and lean slightly on him. He tenses up for a moment before relaxing.
You think about tomorrow, sitting quietly next to each other whilst you drink water to help your heatstroke. Once you finish your water, you lean off of Venti and towards the side of the bed to place the cup back on the nightstand. He hugs your arm in protest.
âCome backâŚâ he says softly, so you snuggle up closer to him. He puts his arm around you in a half - hug and rests his head against yours. You kiss the side of his head and put your head back on his shoulder. You both doze off sitting that way, and woke up an hour later just to sleep again, this time in each otherâs arms.
âAh⌠sorry Heizou, I mightâve seemed a bit frustrated today.â You apologized.
âYouâve just been dragged around with work all day long, it was hard to talk to you.â You sighed, the weight being lifted off your chest like butterfly taking flight.
He smiled at you.
âNo worries, weâre here now. Did you want a hug? Is that it?â He opened his arms shyly. You felt a surge in your chest as you lunged forward to give him the tightest possible hug you could. He coughed and stumbled at the impact. And, maybe a little bit from how tightly you were squeezing him.
âH-Hey now, arenât you holding me a bit too tight?â He barely managed to say. You buried your head into his shoulder and shook your head.
âM-Mm!â You vigorously disagreed before continuing to squeeze him. He took a moment to think before squeezing you back just as tightly. Now it was your turn to cough. He chuckled,
âLook whoâs unable to breathe now?â
After a few minutes you were still hugging, only now you were standing calmly rather than squishing the life out of each other.

Warning(s): Reader is divorced once (It's an NPC dw Kazuboi would never), Implied child marriage, Past arranged marriage, Kazuha is younger than Reader and refers to them as "fair maiden."
*Shamefully throws 8k words of Kazuha fanfiction at @nursedflowers* HAPPY late BIRTHDAY!! This is my first time writing for him, I hope I haven't butchered your man too muchđ
Mother always told you to marry a rich man.
It would make your life easier, she said.
He'd take good care of you, she said.
You would be so much happier, she said.
Maybe if you weren't so young at the time, you would have seen the greed in her eyesâ
There's nothing to gain from contemplating the what ifs, you tell yourself, signed divorce papers in one hand, your newly acquired vision in the other. Breath heavy and legs shaky as you run to make it into your ride, managing to catch The Crux ship only a few seconds before it could sail, taking your future away with it.
The wooden deck creeks softly as you step aboard it, eyes wide with wonder as you spin in continuous circles to get the full scope of everything around you. The loud chattering of crew members and the occasional traveler making for a lively atmosphere, and the smell of salty sea breeze brightening up your sullen mood.
It's bittersweet âmore sweet than bitterâ but even then, you feel light. Lighter than you've ever been your entire life, and that's what matters most.
It smells like home, you think, a home that you'll never return to.
You spend your time strolling around. You've wasted enough of your lifespan sitting still in your sad old little house, and the captain seemed not to mind your innocent curiousity as long as you kept away from the busy workers.
It is amidst your mindless drifting that you saw him for the first time; Sitting alone in a secluded corner of the ship, paper in hand as he repeats poem verses in search for the missing lines. His presence as weightless as the morning dew, red wine âthe same liquor you used to drown your sorrows away with when life was at its darkestâ poured into kind eyes that peer into the distant horizon with a sad longing, and hay colored strands that gets playfully tousled by the wind.
Shame wells in your stomach upon catching yourself gawking at his form, however before you could retreat to the quaint room you were provided with, the boy calls out to you with the gentlest of voices. "You smell of vanillaš and windwheel aster. Yet sorrow follows wherever you wander."
"Non of that, fair maiden from distant land." He stands up to face you properly, hand moving to scribble something on the paper, filling in the empty lines. "Your presence has helped me greatly with completing this haiku... Intrested in hearing it?"
"Ah." You stand there awkwardly, caught red handed in the act of gazing at his otherworldly beautyâ or maybe you just spent too much time staring at ugly things that even the most midiocre of men seems far too lovely than he actually is. Nevertheless, whether he is as eye-catching as you saw him to be or not, it doesn't matter right now. "Apologies... for disturbing your peace."
Flustered âand a little alarmed at how fast he broke through your defensesâ you fidget with your sleeve, feeling tiny butterflies fluttering in your stomach upon being called "fair maiden." Your eyes searches his for any signs of ill intent, finding none, which makes it all the harder for you to convince yourself to politely reject him.
You have just gotten out of a toxic relationship, and immediately jumping into a new one in your current state won't be doing either of you any favors.
"This... visionâ" Leaving it for faith to decide, you take a look at your heaven blessed gift for the first time since you got it. "âHave been my companion for only half a day. You seem to have a rather strong nose, boy, so how about this; you could try guessing what element the archons has bestowed upon me, and I may grace you with my presence for the rest of the evening. Assuming that you got it right, of course."
The silver tongued samurai âor is he a ronin?â hums in thought. You can hear him vaguely sniffing the air, and you swear his eyes has gotten a tad bit sadder as he spoke. "Electro, mayhaps?"
Your shoulder drops âyou haven't even noticed they were tense until nowâ both relieved and disappointed at his answer. "Sorry, young man." Sighing, you force your body to spin around fast, lest you change your mind and take back your soft rejection. "I may retreat into my room, now. Better luck next time." He does not move from where he stands and you can vaguely make out his voice softly bidding you a goodnight.
You do not speak to him for the rest of the way, and when you finally reach your destination, a small part of you chastises you for leaving without a goodbye.
A pity, really. He made for such pretty sight, too...
â
The next time you see him, you are roaming the bustling streets of Port Ormos, having been sent here for "research purposes" by your mentor when he discovered that you didn't even attempt to venture out into the wilderness ever since you came into Sumeru City two years ago.
You didn't really understand the need for it; your senior friend told you that next year would be full of field research, so you would be forced to be out and about whether you liked it or not. But your teacher seemed to digress, and you aren't dumb enough to refuse a free vacation after shedding too many tears trying to pass this grueling semester.
Finding him here was purely by chance, but you were more than happy to strike a conversion with a familiar face âeven if he technically still counts as a strangerâ as you were left to fend for yourself in this unfamiliar environment.
"Working on another haiku, young man?" Sneaking from behind, you lean casually against the closest wall as you greet him, now much more comfortable in your skin than the you from two years ago.
For whatever reason, however, your surprise attack doesn't appear to faze him at all. If anything the boy seems to have seen it coming from a mile away.
It's... as if he can smell youâ
Oh.
"Fair maiden that carries the scent of windwheel aster, I see that your burdens have gotten much lighter." The poet turns around slowly, giving you a polite nod of acknowledgement in return.
"And I see that you are as much of a sweet talker as ever." Now that the threat of him ignoring your existence is gone, you push your back off the wall to slowly walk towards the boy. "Tell me, young man, what brings you here?"
"Would it be bold of me to say that I came looking for you, O Dendro bearing maiden?"
"Pfft... Ha!" You snort at the audacity, successfully denying the existence of a fuzzy feeling in your tummy. "Flattery suits you well, I must admit, but have you ever thought of investing in some realism to further sell the act?"
He seems about to disagree for a moment before retrying it your way. "In that case, may I kindly ask for your assistance? I've found myself in quiet the hurdle."
You pretend to think about it for only half a second before agreeing. "Sure. I'll lead the way."
Felling a little daring, you grab him by the arm to guide him into the busiest street in Port Ormos as you ask him about the specifics of the spare parts Beidou is looking for.
By the time you find the items, it is dark out, and you barely get the time to stop for a quick dinner before having to run all the way back towards The Crux ship.
Unlike last time, you stay behind to bid him a warm goodbye. A little drunk on the high of having played detective for the whole day.
â
"Happy lantern rite."
"Who theâ" You almost break your neck with how fast you spin, your heart rate spiking incredibly at being intrrupted while immersed in the zone. "âOh. It's... you." Letting out a sigh, you return to scribbling your wish into your lantern. "I never got your name, did I?"
"Kazuha. Kaedehara Kazuha." The now known as Kazuha bows stifly as he introduces himself. Something of a habit from his childhood that he never got to unlearn. "What about you, windwheel aster loving maiden?"
"Kaedehara, huh..." You repeat to yourself silently. You know you heard that name before, back then, when your mom was sorting through arranged marriage proposals for little oblivious you. No wonder his clan crest seemed so familiar. "You never guessed what element was bestowed upon me. Wanna try that again, Kazuha-san?"
Kazuha shakes his head at you, voice the slightest bit sheepish as he answers your question. "No need for formality, or have we not spent enough time in each other's company for you to consider me a close friend of yours, wind blessed damsel?"
"[Name]"
"Hm?"
"You got my vision right. My name is [Name]." You repeat yourself, holding out your lantern like a peace offering. "I see that you don't have one of your own. Wanna share our wishes?"
The ronin carefully grabs the offered side of the fragile thing. "If you don't mind."
"Let's count to three!"
"1."
"2!"
"3/3!"
"Happy lantern rite, Kazu~ha!" You singsong his name as you let go of the lantern, watching it dissappearing into the sea of lanterns above you.
"Does that mean I get that promised evening?" He asks a teasing tilt to his voice as he attempts to remind you of your first meeting on The Alcore.
It doesn't seem to affect you in your joyous mood. Which backfires his attempt to fluster you right back at him when you grab him by the arm, shouting: "It's a date!" As you take him to the closest alcohol providing place.
Author's Note(s):
Vanilla is a mood boosting smell, so what Kazuha meant is that reader was carrying around happiness while being depressed themselves. Using this, Kazuha's words can go like this: "You smell of happiness and windwheel aster, yet sorrow follows wherever you wander."
This was hastily edited pls pay no mind to the probably catastrophic amount of errors.
Sorry if characterization is inconsistentđ The fic originally had so much more plot and lore going on for it but I had to cut it to finish it in time so we never got to see Reader get their character arcđ
Also I think this is the first time I write a very long one shot so maybs that's a factor too gcnkdbifb
â In which kazuha stumbles upon an unfinished poem in a bottle during a storm.
The wind tugged at Kazuha's hair as he leaned on the railings. The smell of the salty sea lingered in the wind. He took a deep breath, enjoying the calming wind while he stared at the patterns of the waves.
Something drops on his nose; he softly flinches, looking up at the guy. The clouds gathered, and the droplets of water dropped. He reaches out his hand to feel the droplets.
"Go in now! Take shelter; there's a storm comin' up!"
Just before he stepped along to go inside, his eyes lingered on the waves as he spotted something shiny. A bottle, yes, just a bottle, yet he felt so intrigued. What could possibly be inside?
"Kazuha, what are you doingâ"
"Just a moment, Beidou."
He quickly climbed down the wet ladders, daring to fall. He reached out for the bottle, but it was out of his reach. The waves crashing against the ship's hull made it difficult to steady himself, but he was determined to retrieve it. At last, he finally grabbed it and claimed it back on the ship. Both Beidou and Kazuha went in:
"Archons⌠Your curiosity will be the death of you, boy." She leaned in to see what he was holding. "Say, whatcha got there? The sea is full of mysteries, huh?"
Kazuha opened the bottle, only to reveal a beautifully written poem on a beautiful scroll:
âThe wind knows where my heart drifts,
though my feet may never follow.â
The poem was incomplete. Kazuha was astonished; it's been a while since he's seen any good poets. As a poet himself, he was curious who the writer was. Such graceful handwriting, yet you could feel the passion from just the poem itself. Not only was there a poem but also a beautiful drawing that captured the essence of the poem perfectly.
A maple leaf falling, not on the ground but drifting across a far shore. In the scenery, there were unfinished footprints. It was as if the maple leaf was one's dream, and they never got to follow the leaf. Only the echoes of their footsteps remained.
"It's so beautiful, yet it's unfinishedâŚ" He whispered in awe.
"Why don't you just complete it? Aren't you a poet too?"
"This is different⌠This⌠isn't mine to finish but for someone else. I will find that someone."
Beidou stifled a laugh, laughing at the boy's delusions. Putting her palm on her forehead. 'He really believes he can find the missing piece to this poem,' she thought to herself.
Author's note:
This was something in my drafts for a while, so I posted it! If I get the time, there might be a part II !
"and then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like, 'I love you'.."
Fandom: genshin impact, modern au.
Character(s): Venti, Dahlia gets mentioned.
Warnings: religious topics, venti goes to church lol. Possible mistakes, English isn't my first language lmao
Notes: I'm sorry for taking so long! I was out for a trip with my parents for a few days and finding time to write this was harder than I planned. (Also I'm sorry if my work looks a bit clumsy I'm still a bit unfamiliar with actually posting what I write and posting on tumblrđ)
All feedback is appreciated!
The last thing that Venti wanted was for his feelings to get in the way, especially when it came to you.
He didn't understand what this feeling was at first, but the realization made everything heavier than it was.
Obviously, he would've never started acting differently with you, he was your best friend.
He didn't want you to get suspicious of it either, he was 99% sure you didn't like him the same way he did. It would've been so humiliating for him to show such a vulnerable side of him only to get rejected in return.
What if you got grossed out and stopped talking to him?
What if you laughed in his face and he made a complete fool of himself?
He couldn't risk losing you.
You two have been friends for so long.
You have seen him almost under every light possible: during tests where the questions were completely different from what you studied, under the spotlight at his theater club plays, under the street lamps during a walk on a summer evening, under the purple lights during prom.
God how beautiful you were that night.
You didn't go together as a date, but you thought it could've been fun and he agreed.
That night you were absolutely stunning. He could barely take his eyes off of you.
As if the situation couldn't get worse for him, "No. 1 Party Anthem" started playing.
That damn song. You loved it and he knew it.
You asked him to dance as a joke and you could barely look at each other without laughing.
It was mainly the awkwardnesd of the situation, sure, but it made him realize something: that weight in his chest wasn't going away.
At first, it appeared as a small pressure with the little things you did.
He repeated himself that you were just being nice to him by always showing up to his theater plays and archery competitions, drawing random things on his arm or paper during boring classes, fixing his hair and clothes when they were messy.
The feeling started getting stronger when he opened up about his doubts, his fears and insecurities.
He obviously wasn't completely transparent with you, he didn't want to scare you off by telling you about the way he felt like he only had you by his side.
He didn't want to make you feel obligated to stay by his side of things went wrong.
He knew you wouldn't laugh at him or shame him, he knew it because everytime he lost a competition, got a bad grade or was overall stressed you were always the first to encourage him and believe in his abilities,
But that knowledge was useless when that feeling he couldn't quite name came in the picture.
At first he thought it was some type of deep admiration for you, but then why did he have to hide the way he felt breathless every time you smiled or sat next to him?
The answer hit him like a truck at prom's night.
The way you looked at him under those purple lights, dancing to that song you loved.
That night, after dancing he had to take a break in the bathroom.
He excused himself acting as if everything was okay, then almost cried at the sink and then came back to you as if nothing happened.
After that night Venti tried to hide his feelings from you through finals and graduation.
You two made separate career choices that lead you to not be in the same school anymore.
You weren't sure if he was happy about it or not.
After all you were best friends.
You tried to keep the friendship intact, sometimes by hanging out when you had time. He ended up moving out but still managed to find a house in the same area, so you could see each other.
He always liked writing.
You never knew how he did it but he always managed to be one of the best in essays even if he didn't study as much as the others, so you weren't surprised when he chose to study literature and take part of an extra writing class that got him to write small articles on the local newspaper.
He didn't make much from them so he also tutored some kids with writing classes.
Because of this, when he spoke about this writing competition his professor organized with the students of her course, you went I full support mode, reassuring him that he would've done amazing.
He was pretty confident in his ability to write a good article, but his confidence shattered a bit when he found out the assignment was a personal piece after signing up.
If he had to be honest, this competition thing made him more nervous than it should've.
He was good at writing objective articles, analyzing poems and novels he was assigned to, but this was completely different.
This time, the assignment was supposed to be a personal dive in himself and he wasn't good at that.
He didn't exactly update you much in it either. When you asked about it he just said: "yeah no, it's just some essay about art in life and stuff like that" dismissing his writing.
On the other hand, his friend Dahlia knew everything.
It was a normal afternoon, nothing too big happened beside Venti struggling with the worst author block he had in his whole life.
Usually, he would show you the surface of the iceberg his problems were.
This was one of the times where desperation was stronger than his beliefs.
That's why he sat in the back rows of the church benches.
It's quite peculiar to the others, but that's the main comfort spot Venti knew.
All those years as a choir kid for the local church gave him comfort and doubts at the same time. Six years later he was still sitting in a church asking for a sign that could help him solve his problems.
Just like he did as a kid when his grandma took him to church.
Ironic isn't it?
"I just need a sign, please just tell me what to do" he said under his breath, fidgeting with the zip of his jacket.
When he was on the verge of leaving, a certain pink haired altar boy he knew a bit too well sat next to him.
"Are you still trying to figure things out?", he asks.
Venti could only reply with a sigh, debating if he should tell him the truth, to which Dahlia answered with a chuckle and a nudge: "I figured you'd definitely not come here before Mass to join us. Spill the tea".
He tried to explain himself to his friend, but the words didn't come out as easily as he hoped they would.
"I just wish I didn't have to feel like my ribs are getting crushed everytime I think about it, you know?"
Dahlia could only feel a small amount of helplessness as he knew how hard it is to convince the boy to open up, let alone confess his feelings to someone.
The pink haired friend replied with a sigh.
"You should start by accepting your feelings and not make it sound like they're murdering you just by existing..you know, you should come to the conclusion that things like these can't be avoided. You know you'll have to face them eventually"
Now, Venti knew his friend was right, but what was he supposed to do? Put his feelings into words? He barely knew how to tell you what made him sad, let alone that he was madly head over heels for you!
"You know I can't do that, Dahlia. I'd just end up ruing everything. It's just best if I don't tell her."
"Who said anything about saying it in her face? Don't you have that essay you have no idea what to write in?"
Oh.
Oh.
"No no no no, that is out of question!"
Dahlia almost had to shush him for the way his whispers raised in volume, being louder than the pipe playing, scaring an elder lady who was in the front rows with a rosary in her hand.
"It's not like you have to read it to her! You just have to write, submit and that's it! No big confession. Just getting the weight off your chest. It can only be good to you."
To that, Venti could only reply with a huff, more nervous than anything else, before running a hand in his hair.
"No one but the professor will see it anyway. You have your material and your secret, minus the burden."
"Is that what you'd do?"
"Well if you ask me, I'd say that God wants what he wants for me, wether it's rejection or not. I would still try if I were you. You have nothing to lose... beside the competition"
"Maybe you're right..."
"Of course I am! Let me know how it goes. I should go get ready for mass."
Said the pink haired before vanishing in the sacristy.
That night Venti couldn't sleep, just like he did when he saw you for what you really meant to him.
Only, this time, he wouldn't have let it.
He wore his headphones and started writing everything he felt, without being too obvious.
The dim light of his lamp covered his room, reflecting on the trophies he won as an archer, the polaroids hung on his wall. Some music sheets here and there near his music stand and his instruments' cases. His usual playlist in his ears, giving him the right amount of emotion and inspiration he needed.
Around a month passed before the award ceremony and Venti was now more anxious than he'd ever been in any competition.
"Come on, take a deep breath, you got thisâ
You try to reassure him fixing his hair and sweater, before taking his shoulders with your hands, giving them a gentle squeeze.
"I'll go take a seat in the back while you talk to the others. Good luck Ven."
Venti ended up sitting in the front, looking for you in the audience while walking in the auditorium to his seat, not managing to spot you.
As the professor started introducing the assignment to the crowd, Venti could feel that sense of void building up in his stomach.
He tried to drown the feeling by fidgeting with his rings and then his sleeves, pulling them enough so he could cover his hands.
You always scolded him for biting his nails, so he tried to stop.
"I must admit some works were remarkable, it truly was difficult to discuss our top three"
He did not get the third or second place as he was used to when he wasn't writing articles, so he just started convincing himself he didn't make it that far this time.
That's why hearing his name and "first place" in the same sentence shocked him.
Of course, it wasn't the first time he won a writing competition, that's how he got his spot in newspapers after all.
This, however, was more than unexpected.
He was convinced his work sucked.
Despite the shaky hands and his legs feeling like jelly, he made his way up to where his professor was to shake her hand and take the certificate.
Soon enough, the happiness and pride crashed and his smile faltered as soon as the professor asked him to read an extract.
An extract.
Aloud.
What the hell??
He didnât write the essay to be heard He wrote it to be submitted!
Reading it aloud makes everything heavier!
'Ugh damn you Dahlia...and damn to me for listening' he thinks.
"An extract? Oh...I think it's best if I spare the audience ehe." He said trying to escape from the situation.
"Oh please! Just a few paragraphs! I'm sure the others are curious to know what you wrote, no?â
He glances out across the lecture hall, scanning faces automatically, and then he spots you.
Youâre sitting a few row behind in the first half of the seats, leaning forward with interest. You catch his eye and grin, proud and supportive.
You give him a thumbs up, clueless, to support him, like this is just another one of his wins you get to be there for.
He clears his throat. âUh. Yeah...yes, of course"
He stares at the title: "art in simple, daily things"
He swallows and takes a deep breath before choosing what to read.
He starts somewhere close to the beginning, where itâs safer to read. Where nothing is too clear.
âI think the best art doesnât announce itself.
It just stays with you, quietly, even after youâve stopped paying attention.
It can show up in everything and nothing at the same time, in the big things and the little ones: the dim yellow lights in the streets of a rainy and foggy evening, the Willow trees that hunches over the big lake in the meadow I used to walk in as a kid."
He swallows his saliva, which was feeling thicker, and takes a moment before continuing.
"Some times it shows as a person, under the purple lights in a room full of people...and before you know, it pulls you in for a dance, trapping you in its' magic.
That's the kind of art that stays with you, that you can't look away from.
Art isnât just in the brushstrokes or notes on a page. It's also in the way someone looks at it...it's like music that feels companionable. Not demanding of any attention. Just present.
It's like memories that only exist because someone else was there to witness them.â
âIf this essay is about anything, itâs about noticing whatâs already there."
He reads the last part a bit faster before taking a step back from the microphone.
He was never the type to shy away, but he also never confessed his feelings out loud.
He was good at narrative and telling stories to kids.
He was good at writing essays about other authors and their work.
He never thought his feelings for you would've risked being exposed to everyone in the room.
On the other hand, you were still sitting there. You heard it all.
He reads about art, about how the things that matter most are often the least obvious ones.
About music that doesnât demand attention but earns it anyway.
So far it sounds like something venti would write.
Well, that's until that specific quote.
"Some times it shows as a person, under the purple lights in a room full of people"
That phrase might've seemed innocent to some, just a mere example of simple things.
Not to you.
You remembered that night like no other.
The way you convinced him to come to prom with you, the way you joked about the school trying to "give euphoria vibes" with those purple lights, your favorite song playing and you pulling him for that dance.
Truth to be told you had the fattest crush on him since freshman year.
Since the day you saw him on stage for his first play.
It's not that alone that made you fall for him.
All the little things he did made your heart beat faster.
The times he gave you his jacket or gloves when you where cold,
the time he helped you dye your hair for fun,
the time he bought you tickets for a museum you really wanted to see to surprise you,
the times you two sang in his car while driving with no specific destination.
The time he dried your tears and comforted you through your insecurities.
All the little things this guy did made you melt for him every single time.
Hearing those words from him, on that stage, where, even in a room full of people, listening to them felt like a secret between you two.
You tell yourself it's just a coincidence. That he just appreciated the moment with a friend. That doesn't necessarily mean he feels the same way...no?
As he gets off the stage with his certificate. The professor keeps talking about the next competition while he sits on his chair, fidgeting with the paper.
After the speech, the room starts emptying.
You decide to wait for Venti near the exit with faux nonchalance.
As soon as he reaches you, you pull him into a hug, a tight and felt hug, making his cheeks heat up and his heart beat faster.
âThat was incredible,â you say with bright eyes, pulling back from the hug slightly to face him.
He shrugs and smiles, automatic, like it's a reflex. âI guess I had good material.â
You smile at that, biting back and awkward laugh and a teasing joke and he smiles back, because thatâs what he does.
"Did you walk here? I can give you a ride home if you want." He offers, as usual.
The car ride is quiet at first.
A bit too quiet.
Venti takes a glance at your figure, you're looking outside the window.
He reaches you, concern flickering behind the smile. âHey,â he says lightly. âYou okay?â
You nod, even though your chest feels too full. âYeahâ you say, voice steady despite yourself. â justâŚâ
You trail off. You donât say it out loud. Not here. Not yet.
"Your essay was really beautiful..
Why were you so scared of telling me what it was about?"
He doesn't answer right away, it takes a moment for him to collect his thoughts.
"You really liked it that much? I was pretty sure it sucked.."
"Of course I did. You're a genius in writing.."
He hums. Something about your tone feels off.
''ugh, screw it" you think.
"But... what about the purple lights thing?" There. You asked it. You noticed. There's no going back.
His eyes widen in shock as his face heats up.
He's innerly debating if he should drop the bomb now, but the idea of being alone in his car with you is scary.
What if you reject him?
Ugh who cares? You asked anyway!
"Can I..stop somewhere for a second?â
He asks unsure of what he's doing.
"Sure..?" You answer looking at him. brows furrowed in confusion.
He pulls over in a parking lot, the music still playing from the radio.
"Uh.. Venti? Are you okay? You're worrying me-"
"I wrote it about you."
You're about to say something when he cuts you off by asking you to move to the back seat. It's not unusual, you always did it when you had deep talks in his car.
So you do.
You put blind trust in him, like you always do.
After hearing the door closing from the passenger side he lets an audible sigh out.
This is eating him alive.
He's so lost in thoughts he barely notices you entering and string in the back seats next to him, looking at him with that attentive look of yours.
You always have that look when he needs your warm comfort.
"I'm sorry for hiding the content of the essay..
Truth to be told I pulled an all-nighter to write it. I didn't know what to write. I'm just shocked they consider it winner potential."
"Why? Because you aren't used to talking about your feelings?â you can't help but ask.
âWriting about myself directly feels like staring too long at my reflection. I prefer to write around things instead". He answers looking at you for a brief moment. You answer his gaze with a nod, to tell him he's safe to talk to you about this.
"I couldn't sleep well for weeks. Trying to understand what to write about. I thought nothing was good enough". He confesses.
"Then what helped you make your mind up?"
"I spoke to a friend...and it made me think..
..you know.. I donât feel like Iâm especially important in anyoneâs lifeâ he says, with a small resigned smile that hurts to hear. âI like being the background character. The supporting role."
He continues, âIâve always preferred standing to the side of things. Observing. Being useful. Adding warmth where I can."
"Oh Venti, please, you know you're more than that-"
"Please let me finish.." he cuts you off with no harm intended.
"You know I'm mainly good at making others laugh..at not taking things seriously". He says scratching and pinching his neck. That's something he did when he was nervous and you knew it well.
âThere are some things,â he continues, quieter now, more hesitantly: âthat feel heavier to say than anything else..
And I found out that joking about them doesnât make that weight disappear."
As you listened, you notice about his fidgeting and take that hand in yours, gently pulling it down to stop him from hurting himself.
He responds with a shaky sigh, not keeping eye contact.
"but, why me, then..?" You ask, trying to understand better.
"I'm not sure... I always thought love was something loud... like fireworks or a song with no off-button."
There's a moment of silence. He swallows hard, fingers trembling around the hem of his jacket he took in his fingers to keep his hand busy.
His eyes flick back to you.
You're looking at him with a confused, unsure expression.
He swallows, before continuing with a shaky voice.
"But itâs quiet for me. Even in the way my pulse jumps when you fix my collar before class... or how I memorized your laugh.
..Like knowing exactly how you take your drinks..the movies you like.. the way your eyes look when you laugh or cry...your favorite seasonal perfumes..."
"It's in every stupid joke that makes you laugh harder than it should. In how your presence turns silence into something warm instead of empty... That's what I said art in simple, daily things is to me in the essay..."
"I think I'm trying to say...I love you.."
You stay quiet. The words he just said are replaying in your head over and over.
Venti, your best friend, who you've been crushing on for the past years just confessed to you.
He looks at you.
Your eyes are wide, mouth slightly agape while you're still processing what just came out of his mouth. It's not like him to openly talk about his feelings.
He notices you're not saying anything and starts panicking a bit, thinking he might have just messed things up.
Did he just ruin everything?
He starts stumbling over his words, trying to take back what he just said, but you stop him by gently squeezing his hand.
"I..I know, it's stupid..you don't have to say anything..just, please don't see me differently, I don't mind being just a friend, I just needed to tell you, to finally be honest about my feelings.."
His words are interrupted by you gently squeezing his hand again, your thumb tracing small circles on his knuckles.
He dares to look up at you, his eyes a bit glossy.
Your mind is still kind of busy trying to process everything he said, but when you see his expression your chest tightens.
You've never seen him this nervous before.
"I'm sorry..I didn't mean to make things awkward. I don't know why I'm so scared..". He says quietly looking away.
"hey, no. Venti, look at me, don't panic. You have nothing to apologize for.
starting by the fact it's not a feeling you can control, I would never leave you for something like that.
Whether I feel it too or not, you're my best friend. It would take a lot more to separate us."
You squeeze his hand once more, this time, pulling him a bit closer to you.
"though I must say you're a bit of an idiot for thinking you don't mean anything to anyone.. me especially. I can point out a whole list of things that make you irreplaceable for me...starting by the fact I like you too."
This time he looks at you with a hint of surprise at your sudden boldness.
"Really..?" He manages to ask.
"Yes, dumbass. Really. Why else do you think I offered you to dance that night?"
Even if your choice of words was a bit harsh, you meant no arm. The words came out soft and affectionate and to them. You even added a kiss right above his nose, between his brows, cradling his cheek with your hand before resting your forehead against his.
He swallows, looking up at you as if he was staring at the most beautiful thing in the world, while his heartbeat speeds up.
You had to admit, you would've never imagined he could act like this. He seems like the chilliest guy ever, but he's an absolute mess with feelings.
His breath hitches at that kiss.
His eyes widening like you just slapped him.
"..Me? Of all people??" he echoes, voice cracking embarrassingly, as he back away a little.
now it's his turn to stare at you with that same expression of disbelief you had earlier.
"You⌠liked me? Like this whole time?" He asks gesturing wildly between the two of you.
You can't help but hold back a snort at his reaction.
"Then why didn't you say anything either??"
He lets out a strangled noise that almost sounds like a laugh before covering half of his face with the palm of his hand.
"oh my god" he mumbles through his fingers. "you are just as bad as me?!"
Yep. That's the real Venti. he's back.
"It's not that easy!" You reply, rolling your eyes at him, gently pushing him from his shoulder.
"I wasted two years thinking I was a loser for wanting you and you were doing the same thing when I could've been kissing you for two years??" he cuts himself off almost choking out the last part: "and you're telling me you wouldn't have even said no?!"
"I guess??"
Venti can feel his breath catching in his throat, like you just knocked the air out of his chest. He also lets a small laugh out before he slightly shakes his head.
"God, you have no idea how much I cried like an idiot over this..."
"so. uhm. Can you tell me you're 100% sure of what you feel for me? I just need to hear it with clear words, because my brain is currently frying"
The words come out with a chuckle.
He's trying to release the tension.
He always does that.
"What? Do you want me to tell you I feel the same again? Of course I do..dummy..is this not obvious enough?" You admit with a laugh gesturing between you two.
Then your hand reaches his cheek again.
He takes that hand in his.
His thumb brushes over it, his gaze darts between your eyes and lips.
"I was scared too...don't think I didn't care" You admit, looking into his eyes
"Fuck it." He thinks. Now it's the moment.
Then, he gently presses his lips onto yours.
The kiss is short.
His lips part from yours so he can look at your reaction, seeking your approval.
Your sweet smile contrasts his heavy, nervous breathing.
"Was that okay..?â he asks unsure.
You don't answer with words.
Instead, you press your lips against his once more.
The kiss is still innocent. Just a bit more confident.
You taste like home. He does too.
When he finally pulls back, he doesn't move too far back.
Your foreheads are touching, close enough for the air to feel intimate.
"I should've done that at prom." He comments with an awkward laugh, to which you answer with a light chuckle.
"yeah.. you should've.."
He lets out a small chuckle at that too.
"So, uhm.." he begins, sitting back, looking away.
"I assume this means something..right?"
"You mean if we're together?" You ask with an amused smirk.
"I mean..we don't have to if you don't want to. I was just asking!" He stumbles on his words trying to explain.
"Well, what a pair we'd be, huh?" You joke trying to break the tension.
"Yeah..it sounds great"
There's a brief moment of silence before he breaks it.
"... dinner at my place tonight?"
You look at him in half-disbelief and half-amusement.
"Are you asking me on a date now?"
"Maybe.." he answer looking away with flushed cheeks.
You look at him for a moment, smiling, before:
"Yeah...Dinner at your place it is."
"I'll pick you up at eight?" He asks looking back at you with a smile.
Summary: Writing a duet is... messy work. Especially considering yours and Venti's track record of actually getting along.
The grassy fields stretch far and wide around you, all long green strands and quiet hums of crystalflies. Itâs not quite silent. Thereâs the rustle of the wind, the occasional chirp from birds up in the canopy, and the rhythmic drone of cicadas somewhere farther off⌠but it feels removed, somehow, like the world slows down just a little bit here. Above you, the sky is an endless, easy blue, broken only by the heavy limbs of the tree youâve chosen for shade. It stands tall and grand at the center of the meadow, bark coarse from the consistent teasing of the wind, its branches casting long, shifting shadows underneath it. Itâs the heart of Windrise.
Venti is already there, strumming his lyre. Of course he is.
Heâs leaning against the trunk of the tree, arms draped around his lyre like itâs an old friend, playing some tune he probably hasnât bothered to write down yet. Just letting the melody happen, like he always does. Like itâs as easy as breathing. He glances up when he hears you approach, and his grin is immediate. Bright. Teasing.
âThere you are,â he says with a snicker. âI was beginning to think Iâd have to write this melody alone. Could you imagine the tragedy?â
You set your instrument down beside you as you sit, not answering right away. The grass is warm beneath your legs, despite the shade. âYouâd probably enjoy the drama,â you reply dryly.
âYou make a great point,â he concedes, plucking a chord with idle fingers as he closes his eyes. âBut it would make for quite a lackluster duet if I had to compose it on my own, without you frowning at me half the time.â
You furrow your eyebrows. âI donât frown.â Venti hums as if to politely disagree. The lyre in his hands sings again, something playful this time, light and loose. âYou do. But itâs a very musical sort of frown.â
You breathe out through your nose, trying not to smile. âIs that supposed to be a compliment?â
âEverything I say is a compliment,â he replies, unbothered. âYouâre just⌠failing to recognize them.â
You decide not to entertain him with an answer to that. Instead, you open your notebook and skim the messy notes you scribbled the night before while you were still soaked in rain. Youâre not sure if youâre annoyed or relieved that heâs in a good mood again. Probably both.
The breeze picks up, tousling your hair and rustling the parchment between your fingers. You glance at him from the corner of your eye. Heâs still playing. Still not looking at you.
That should make it easier to focus, yet somehow it doesnât. His melody weaves through the wind like it has come alive, sneaking into your thoughts, slipping between your notes and making it impossible to determine where your ideas end and his intrusions begin.
âI thought we agreed,â you say without looking up, âthat you would start with the melody this time so I didnât waste half the afternoon guessing what key youâre in.â
He lets a soft laugh hum through the strings. âDid we agree on that? I remember you mumbling something very close to surrender, but nothing about melodies.â
You shoot him a tired glare. âVenti, I swear-â
He finally opens his eyes. Only half-lidded, but still bright with amusement. âRelax. I am playing the melody. Or at least the beginnings of it.â
âThatâs not a melody,â you mutter, tapping your pencil against the side of your notebook with no rhythm in mind. âThatâs wandering. Aimless. Like you.â
He gasps in mock offense, teal eyes sparking with something close to endearment. âI will have you know this wandering is intentional. I am searching for inspiration.â
â... are you gonna find it soon?â
Venti shrugs, reclining a little further against the trunk. âTsk. You always rush this part.â
You press your lips together, trying not to say something unkind. He always makes it sound so easy. Like music simply arrives when he calls for it. Like thereâs no work to it. No strain.
You try focusing again, still tapping your pencil lightly against the parchment.
A moment passes, filled with his strumming which slowly grows less aimless.
Then he shifts, scooting just an inch closer. Not touching you. But close enough that you can feel him watching you now. The melody eases into silence.
âYou brought more lyrics,â he says. Not a question.
You keep your eyes on the page, but your heartbeat betrays you. âTheyâre rough.â
âRough is promising.â
âTheyâre messy.â
âMessy is honest.â
You let out a slow breath, feeling your shoulders tense and then ease again. Heâs not teasing now. Or, at least, not in the usual way. Thereâs something gentle under the words, something he doesnât usually let slip.
It makes the silence that follows feel heavier than it should. Not uncomfortable. Just⌠full.
You tap your pencil against the notebook again. âYouâre in a strange mood today.â
He smiles, small but genuine. âAm I?â
Venti looks up from your notes momentarily, gazing out at the grassy fields all around you two.
â... Must be the weather.â
You roll your eyes, but the corner of your mouth twitches up despite yourself.
Venti moves a bit closer again, leaning forward just enough that his shoulder nearly brushes yours, though heâs careful not to actually touch you. His fingers return to the strings of the lyre, lighter this time, plucking out a quiet sequence. Still not quite a full melody yet, but closer to something real.
âYou know,â he murmurs, eyes flicking down to your notebook, âyou always act like youâre bad at this part.â
âI am bad at this part,â you emphasize, refusing to look up from your scribbles. âYou just compensate for me.â
He scoffs, soft and warm. âAbsolutely untrue! You hear things I donât. You think in hymns and sonnets. I only chase after whatever crosses my mind.â
âThatâs obvious,â you mutter, but your voice lacks its usual bite. Venti pretends not to hear you. Or maybe he really doesnât. He seems focused now, watching the way your pencil twitches hesitantly over the page, hovering over the parchment.
âTry something. Anything. A phrase, a line⌠doesnât matter if itâs off. Iâll follow.â
You hesitate. His gaze drifts back to his strings, giving you space you didnât ask for but absolutely needed.
Then you hum.
Barely anything at first. A tiny fragment of an idea thatâs been haunting the back of your mind since last night, nothing more than a handful of notes with no real direction. You expect him to laugh. Or interrupt. Or correct you with something too perfect to compete with.
But he doesnât.
He listens. Really listens.
And then, gently like matching your footsteps, he plays under you. Not overtaking, not leading. Just filling the gaps, weaving soft chords beneath your tentative hum until the shape of something more full begins to form.
You nearly forget to breathe.
The sun, the field, the rustle of the leaves and the gentle bobbing of the grass, everything else slips away, fading into the edges of your awareness. Your voice steadies, finds a tone, and follows it. His accompaniment lifts you, supporting the melody you didnât even realize you were shaping.
For a moment, youâre not thinking about him. Or the duet. Or the pressure youâve put on yourself to make it good. Youâre justâŚ
Here.
Creating.
And it feels effortless for once.
âŚ
When the melody finally trails off, you blink as if waking up from a dream. The world rushes back in. The warmth of the tree at your back, the wind brushing your cheek, the faint thrum of his final chord hanging in the space between you.
Venti watches you with a look thatâs too soft, too knowing.
ââŚSee?â he says quietly. âTold you. Youâre better at this than you think.â
You open your mouth, but nothing comes out. Absolutely nothing. Itâs like the world betrayed you by continuing to exist while your thoughts had abandoned ship.
Venti notices. Because of course he does.
He smiles. Small, crooked, knowing.
âOh,â he says quietly. âThere it is.â
âHuh..? What is?â you snap, too fast.
He nods at your face with an infuriating little tilt of his head. âThat look. The dumbfounded look you get when your hard work finally bears fruit.â
Your entire body goes hot as you narrow your eyes at him. âI do not make a look.â
âOh, you do!â He plucks the melody you just created, easy and unhurried, like heâs scoring the moment on purpose. âItâs very endearing. You should do it more often!â
You glare. Or, at least you try to. It comes out more like a wounded blink. âStop talking.â
âWhy?â Ventiâs voice rises slightly, clearly delighted by the idea of getting under your skin. âYou can admit when youâre overwhelmed, you know. This profession often tugs at the heartstrings.â
You nearly choke. âIâm not overwhelmed.â
âYou hummed,â he says, leaning in slightly. âI encouraged you. You created something lovely. And now youâre trying very hard not to smile about it. Itâs all very predictable.â
Predictable⌠Predictable!?
You would shove him if you werenât stressing over the idea of actually touching him. Which, by the way, you definitely have a reasonable explanation for wanting to avoid right now. A reason that doesnât need to be dwelt on because itâs so clear, so obvious. Yeah. So you cross your arms instead.
âYouâre insufferable.â
âAnd you,â he says lightly, âare timid about your art.â
âIâm going to leave,â you threaten.
âNo,â he counters, utterly certain. âYouâre going to stay right here and help me turn your very charming melody into a very charming duet.â
You grumble under your breath, because you have a terrible suspicion heâs gonna be right.
He catches the indignant tone of yours and grins in pure delight.
âAh. And now weâve reached the speechless stage. A personal favorite.â
âI hate you,â you mutter.
Venti strums out your melody again, softer this time. âNo, you donât.â
This time, you donât argue. Mostly because your throat refuses to cooperate. But also partially because you canât wait to move past this topic.

Out of everyone, your best friend was last person you expected to kiss you and run away. Little coward.
(Lovesick series- Wanderer.)
Wanderer x Gn!Reader, 9.6k words. (5.1k, 4.4k). Angst, then fluff. (Based off of this and this. Feel free to send more requests my way with a Laufey song and the character/s of your choice!!)
Some additional info!! Aqaba is mentioned here. For those who donât know/donât remember, Aqaba is the npc scholar in the Sumeru Interlude quest that was researching Tatarasuna (and wrote a terrible essay about it. If it gets peer reviewed the Akademiya is a lie.)
Also, I'd appreciate everyone checking out my beloved friend @sizzles-z-4002's pinned post!! They make the most wonderful art and their commission prices are insanely affordable <333
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
Part I: Lovesick.
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
In every relationship thereâs ideally a give and take. Itâs erâ mutually voluntary, if youâre being very optimistic. But you know better than to pin these hopes onto Wanderer, of all people.
Whatever you know of him has been gleaned through vague mentions, an eye more watchful than Fontaineâs Marechaussee Phantom and literal, desperate research. For some reason. Even though Wanderer, on the other hand, is privy to every inch of your past, every bit of your personal life. For some reason.
Years of friendship have taught youâ who cares. After all, if Wanderer himself does not wish to offer any informationâ begging will only achieve a lashing via those pretty, poisonous lips. Heâs not the nicest. His momma never taught him please, or no, thank you, or excuse me, after all. Quite literally.
And so youâre stuck muttering curses under your breath, with mixed horror and pity, as you watch Wanderer widen his eyes in mock shock and laugh at the poor boy giving him a love letter. Argh. Youâd told him not to do it, but oh well. At least his suitor had the wisdom to pull them both away to a quieter spot around the Akademiyaâ thereâs no one else around their gazebo, thankfully.Â
No one to watch as Wanderer tilts his head, looking dire for a moment as he says something to the man in front of him, who hangs his head and quietly leaves. Well. That had a calmer ending than youâd predicted.
Unthankfully this does mean you had to run up a slope to find him, but still.
âOi!â You yell. It sounds more like something between a wheeze and a bark. âAsshole!â
The Wanderer turns, haughty head tipped prettily over his shoulder, soft, doll-likeâ no, doll skin catching the warm beams of light filtering through the leaves.
Heâs so beau- no, no, stay strong.Â
The prick doesnât move an inch as you weakly make your way towards himâ just stands there with his arms crossed, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. It successfully prises them apart when you reach him, and he gives you a wicked grin when you smack a tired fist against his shoulder. He does not stumble.
âWhy,â you wheeze, âwould you laugh.â
âWhy,â he mock-wheezes, âdo you care? If someoneâs begging to be laughed at, am I not being kind by obliging?â
Ugh.
âYou know why itâs mean,â you grumble, plopping down onto one of the gazebo benches. Wanderer sits next to you, mock pouting and solemnly nodding, pretty, iridescent lashes brushing his cheeks with every blink. Heâs gorgeous, easily the most beautiful person youâve ever seen. Prettier than even the lithe warrior you met once in Liyueâs marshes, prettier than the wandering Inazuman swordsman you recently met, prettier than even Kaveh, somehow. Maybe even prettier than Candace.Â
No, youâre getting distracted again.Â
âThey pourout their hearts to you, and you laugh when they do.â
âThatâs âcause theyâre not pouring jack.â He rolls his eyes. âThey donât know me, so whatâs there to fall in love with?â
âHowâs anyone supposed to know you when you never tell people about yourself?âÂ
This is a common, predictable squabble with a common, predictable outcome. Every time Wanderer serves his admirers a scathing rejection, you run to their defence, despite some of them disliking you immensely. (He calls it charity.)
After all, youâre one of the few people Wanderer wonât shove away with a sneer.
Youâre not sure why, exactly, but you know youâre in his good graces for some esoteric reason, and you know youâre there to stay. After allâ
âFunny you say that,â he muses, rolling a piece of hard candy between thumb and forefinger before propping it against your lips, the candy held between your lip and his thumb. His fingers move from beneath your jaw to tap against your cheek in an impatient, open up sort of way. You hope he canât feel your face heat up.
You open your mouth, and the candy falls in, and somehow it feels warmer than the sun beating down on Sumeruâs static afternoon.Â
âFunnyâŚ?â you prompt, scrambling to regain your footing, but it seems heâs not eager to offer any help.
âYes, funny. As in amusing, as in it makes you giggle.â
Itâs your turn to roll your eyes. âI know what âfunnyâ means.â
âThen,â he says, prettily leaning back in his seat (because everything he does is pretty, somehow) âyou could also tell me what I thought was so funny about what you said earlier.â
Fuck.
âUhâŚâ Yeah, you have no idea. The stupid candy distracted you. You bite down on it in nervousness and it cracks, sending a jelly-like sour filling spilling onto your tongue, making you adorably scrunch your face for a moment. Wanderer laughs, and after taking a moment to compose yourself, you stick your tongue out at him. Jerk, you think affectionately.
âYour face looks like a dogâs ass right now.â He grins.Â
âYouâd know, wouldnât you,â you retort, and he sagely nods.
âI look at you pretty often.â He shrugs. âHard not to make a comparison.â
âAw,â you deadpan. âYou stare at me?â
âNah.â He pops a candy into his own mouth, eye twitching at the sweeter exterior, but shoulders relaxing at the sourness inside. âNot the way you stare at Aqaba, at least.â
âAqabaâ? Is that what this is about?â
Wanderer gives you a smile. It emanates neither joy nor amusement.
âAnd here I thought youâd at least be honest with me,â he says.
Huh? Did he find out youâve been asking Aqaba if he knows anything about him?
After allâ thereâs quite literally no one else left to ask. Youâve read all you can about the Shogunate, about Inazumaâs branching noble families and bastard children, anything that would further help you understand what exactly is the reason for your best friendâs fucked up-ness. Itâs just not fair that you know nothing, save for âmy mum didnât want me, so she chucked me into an empty mansion with a feather.âÂ
And so youâve moved on to enquiring about any major incidents in Inazuma. You heard about the Raiden Gokaden incident already, but learning about it had only left you with more questions. The story made sense in a vacuum, but large portions of it were poorlyâ or even not documented. To make things worse, the hints Wanderer gave about his past (that youâve quite literally scribbled in a special notebook somewhere. Documentation.) donât add up.
And so you decided to ask the only scholar you personally knew that researched itâ Aqaba. The only other person you know that might have the relevant information is your Archon herself, and you doubt sheâd appreciate you running into her home, clasping your palms together, falling onto your knees and begging like the Kamera-obsessed Fontainian woman that passed through here once.
Whatâs odd is that Wandererâs never really had a problem with your nosy habits in the past, though. He really just lets you do whatever, since according to him, itâs funny to see you scrounging around for information only he has. So whatâs the issue now? Does he not want you digging around his past? If heâd rather you stay out of it, youâll happily acquiesce. You care more about him than sating your curiosity.Â
Evidently though, thatâs not what he meant at all, because the next sentence to fall off his plump, beautiful lips isâ
âDidnât think he was your type, honestly.â He yawns. âBut hey, he might figure out what youâd like for your birthday every other year, so go for it.â He gives you a sarcastic thumbs upâ or is it sarcastic, because truth be told he sounds the tiniest bit butthurt right now.
You grin, about to laugh when you realiseâ wait, is he serious?Â
âIâ pfft, what?âÂ
Never one to yield to embarrassment, the idiot just sagely nods again. Much to his immense chagrin, if his narrowed eyes are anything to go by, you laugh even harder.Â
âStupid!â You snicker and snatch the candy he was just about to pop into his mouth. He scowls at you as you suckle on it brieflyâ oh, itâs sourâ but crunching it reveals the jelly inside, which is sweet instead.
Wanderer takes out yet another candy from his pocket, discarding the parchment into a tastefully camouflaged trashcan. It misses, and you bite back yet another laugh as he irately swirls it into the trash with a jerk of his finger, the anemo rattling it around a little.
When he bites into the candy, his dour expression tells you it was sour all the way through.
âSo.â He stands, rolling his shoulders, and you bite back another shit eating grin. Wanderer is a puppet, with puppet joints. He does not need to roll his shoulders. âI take youâre not taking Aqaba to Sabzeruz?â
Oh. Right, that.
âI didnât know it was the new Valentines,â you muse, as you both begin to make your way down the slopes, toward the city below. âWho are you going with, by the way? The busy little bee?â
âI just might,â he retorts. âYouâre insufferable today.â
You snicker. âWanderer. Darling. Itâs okay to admit youâre wrong sometimes.â
âDonât call me that.â
âYou call me that.â
âYou think I mean it?â
Ouch. You blink. âObviously not, I guess,â you mutter.
He raises an eyebrow. âYou guess?â
Ouch.
âOh, whatever,â you huff, suddenly not wanting to meet his eyes. You turn to the city laid out below instead. The sun is the tiniest bit closer to setting. You couldâve sworn it was late afternoon just half a minute ago. Time truly is an enigma.Â
Some birds are starting to cause a racket near the trashcans again, flipping through paper cartons and thrown-out kitchen remains, looking for leftover rice or lentils or bread to squabble over.
You let out a small, rueful aw as a cat suddenly pounces on one and drags it off. Oof. Cycle of life.Â
âRest in pieces, birdie,â Wanderer mutters, and you shove at him with a scoff. He doesnât budge an inch.
âWhatever, with you saying shit like this, I might go with Sethos.â
âNot Aqaba?â Scara snickers, and you laugh relievedly. Thank goodness his bad moodâs worn off. What the hell was that even about? Why does he dislike Aqaba?
âNot Aqaba,â you promise. âI was talking to Aqaba because I wanted to figure stuff out about you actually.â
âBet he didnât tell you jack.â
You stumble over a rock as you walk and a gust of anemo steadies you. Ordinarily youâd have teased him for not even bothering to use his hands, but you donât think your heart can take it right now.
âHe didnât,â you instead say. âNothing about you, anyway. UnlessâŚâ You grin.
He tips his head back, raising an eyebrow. The sun reflects off of his eyes, more indigo than the sky when stained with a trailing, lingering dusk. You wonder what he thinks of when he looks at yours.
Youâve stopped now, at a landing between the slopes that overlooks the city below, and Mawtiyima Forest far beyond.Â
You wonder if youâve been staring at the shifting colours of the sky in his eyes for just a moment too long.
âUnless?â he prompts, in a voice thatâs leagues softer than the one he usually uses. This seems to annoy himâ thereâs a tiny crease between his eyesâ but still no sarcasm to be seen.
And as much as you adore it, you pray it doesnât return for a while.Â
âUnless the asshole that refuted his essays on Tatarasuna was you,â you say, and the spell is broken as he first scoffs, then lets out one of his villainous laughs.
âI was doing that idiot a favourââ
âYeah, yeah.â You turn to walk down the path into the Akademiyaâs halls. Sabzeruz, huh.
Pausing and turning back, you tip your head thoughtfully. Wanderer hasnât moved from his spot on the landing, still. Whatever, if he wanted to tell you what was on his mind, he would.
Shrugging, you turn to him. âBy the way, I think Iâll go a bit early to Sabzeruzâ and for the record, no, Iâm not taking Aqaba, I promised to show Kazuha around. Have I told you about him yet?â
Wanderer stills. âKazuha?âÂ
âYeah.â You smile. âHeâs this Inazumanââ
âI know Kazuha,â he cuts in.Â
âOh. That should make introductions easier. Or more awkward, maybe? âCause I was asking him stuff about you, but he didnât really tell me. He did tell me talking to me was like holding hands on a cold night, though.â You grin, obliviously chattering on. âI planned on going with Sethos, but Iâll let you have him.â
Wanderer does not answer.
Itâs getting on your nerves a little. Did he and the busy bee get into a fight? But theyâre always squabbling, so that canât be it. Is this about Kazuha? Does he think Kazuhaâs cute, too?
âDo you wanna go with Kazuha?â you ask hesitantly. âIs that what youâre mad aboutâ hang on, are you even going?â You peer up at him. When he doesnât answer, you realise heâll have to, being the ArchonâsâŚshadow double? Nah heâs twice her size. Familiar, you figure.Â
âNevermind,â you call. The breeze is starting to pick up now. âWho are you going with?â
Oh, you realise. Another stupid question.Â
If heâs the Archonâs familiar, heâll go with the Archon.
You shrug. âNevermind that either. You coming?â
Wanderer just stares.
Damn, whatâs up with him?Â
âYour joints lock up?â You ask, smiling, and he lets out a quick, almost angry exhale and looks away.Â
âWhy not ask me?â
âHuh?â You blink. About what, his joints? You just did. âAboutâ oh, about your mum and stuff?â you ask.
He lets out a shallow breath. An almost-laugh. âAboutâ yeah, sure. Thereâs a bit more to the story than just her and Mikoâs nonsense, though, you know.â
âYae Miko?â Now youâre curious. The Guujiâs involved, too?
Wanderer, seemingly noticing your expression, nods. Thereâs a hint of a smile playing on his lips, but even that seems rehearsed. âMhm. Miko. She wanted me dead.â
Your eyes widen. âWhat?â The Guuji? Why? âShouldnât she care for you, since youâre her masterâsâ?â Shit, you wish you had a notepad. Youâre about to tell him to wait while you run to fetch a pencil and some paper but he continues.
âIâll tell it to you briefly. Donât you dare run.â Noted, you think. You nod, wide eyed, and the smirk playing along the edge of his lips widens into something a little more candid. âObedient, arenât you? Noâ hush, now. Not a word. Let me finish. My mother made me after her sister, the original Shogunâ I said no questions, shut up.â
You bite back a scream. The original Shogun? Thereâs two?
Wanderer grins now, baring all his teeth. The sky behind him is beginning to bleed into soft oranges, a bloody tint on the horizon far beyond. âNo,â he says, as though he can read minds just like his master. âNot two. Three. My motherâs twin was the real Shogun. She died five hundred years agoâ by the false sky, youâre surprised at everything, arenât you?â
âThe whâ okay, shutting up now.â
He smiles. Itâs starting to look rehearsed again, and suddenly youâre worried he doesnât really want to tell this story. Youâre about to tell him he doesnât have to, in spite of your feverish desire to know more, but he holds up a hand, looking visibly irked now.
âShe died. My mother wanted someone to house her gnosis. She made me, decided I wasnât worth squat because I had feelings, and dumped me in a mansion with this feather.â He flicks it with a finger and it falls back into place over his chest, beneath his vision. Over where his heart should be. âThen she made my sister, the third Shogun. Vanished into a plane inside her body. She doesnât have a physical form anymore.
âA man called Katsuragi found me. Heâsâ he was the servant of this guy called Mikoshi Nagamasa. Nagamasa was the son of Mikoshi Chiyo. Torachiyo, whatever. Ring any bells, scholar?â
He sounds so scathing. Thereâs somethingâ something wrong. You already know this story isnât going to have a happy ending, but youâre starting to suspect this is a far bloodier, more convoluted tale than youâd expected. Youâd thought this would be more about just himâ but Torachiyo?
Youâre suddenly glad you didnât ask him to wait so you could fetch some stationary to take notes.Â
You feel like heâs only going to get angrier if you back out now, though. There is an air of grim certainty to him. Arms crossed, feet planted firmly on the ground, not a shred of humour to be found in his eyes, on the edges of his lips. And so all you can do is whisperâ âShe was⌠your mumâs friend, right? The one that she had to kill?â
Wanderer stands, still as a doll. He stares straight at your face and somehow past it. Only his lips move. âYouâre supposed to be smart, so Iâll let you figure out why he had to kill Katsuragi later.â
Oh. Shit. You do not like where this is going, but more than that you donât want to put him through this so suddenly. Your mind is a whirlwind of emotionsâ youâve no time to decipher past soured tempers when heâs staring at you with eyes as cold and hard as marble right now.
âWanderer?â You take a hesitant step towards him. âIf youâd rather not, you donât have toââ
âKatsuragi took me back to the furnace. This guy, Niwa Hisahideâ remember the Niwa clan?â
Youâre strapped to a Sumpter beast running straight at a wall. All you can do is answer. âHe⌠um. He was a master of forging blades via the Isshin Art.â
A sneer splits suddenly across Wandererâs face, and your eyes go from concernedly downturned, to narrowed in defiance when he says, âYouâd know all about the Isshin art, wouldnât you?â
âIs this because I spoke with Kaedehara?â you ask sharply. He rolls his eyes, looking even more incensed somehow and ploughs on.Â
âItâs Kaedehara now, is it? Funny. No matter. Niwa took me in, and taught me bladesmithing. A harbinger, The Doctor, pretended to be a technician from Fontaine and caused the Tatarasuna disaster. Impurities in the forge because thanks to him, we were smithing en masse with basically dead god remains.
âThey sent me to get help from the Shogunate. My sister refused to see meâ hell, I didnât even know she existedâ and while I was busy begging her men for just even an audience, Dottore killed Niwa. When I came back he told me Niwa left me and fucked off to who knows where.Â
âHe told me I had to walk into the furnace with a device to absorb the impurities.â His expression softens a little as your anger morphs quickly into horror. In a lowered voice, he continues. âI did it. I thought Iâd die, but the device saved me. When I came back Dottore told me it was because the heart inside the device protected me.â
âThe heartâ?â
âNiwaâs. But I didnât know.â
Thereâs a long pause, as he regains his breath. You exhale shakily into your palm.Â
âWanderer?â you murmur. âYou can stop now.â
He barks a breathless laughâ or at least, you think itâs one. âNo, I canât.â He gives you a tight lipped smile. Your lips part in dismay when his next sentence isâ
âDottore told me Niwa killed a servant to get the heart, so I ran away. Mikoshi killed Katsuragi. I made friends with this kid, and he died and betrayed me. I tried to die in a fire, it didnât work out. Nothing ever did. Pierro found me a bit later, and made me a Harbinger.
âDottore tortured me for years, and like a halfwit, I let him. He tried to make me a god after I got my motherâs gnosis and Signora, the Eighth, died.â
âWandererââ
âIt didnât work. Kusanali and the Traveller beat me. The glutton fairy was there too, I guess. I found out what actually happened at Tatarasuna. I tried to kill myself, but it didnât work, and now Iâm here. And ah, by the way, it was actually me that ruined the Raiden Gokaden. And your beloved Kaedehara.â He widens his lips into a grotesque imitation of a smile, then drops it. âThe other thing I forgot. Miko wanted me dead so she could be my motherâs only lapwarmer. She got what she wanted. Any questions?â You say nothing. Youâre not sure you can. Wanderer exhales. âGood. Youâre not getting any answers anyway. Iâm tired now. But there.â He stiffly shrugs, a poor shot at nonchalance. âNow at least you can stop hassling Aqaba and Kaedehara and Archons knows who else about this.â
âWandererââ
âWhat now?â His voice sounds sharper with every syllable, unjustly close to a snap. What the hell? Youâve done nothing to make him angry like thisâ he told you everything of his own volition, and youâre nothing if not concerned.Â
Did he just not want you shoving your nose into his business? You rack your mind trying to look for a past moment that betrayed his discomfort at your inquisitiveness and failâ this is a game youâve been playing for years. You look for information and he laughs when you find nothing.Â
Your mindâs a mess. Your heart has never beat this hard before, and thereâs an uncomfortable flush spreading along your neck and ears, sending goosebumps across your skin. Something is wrong. You open your mouth to say somethingâ anythingâ but what can you even say?Â
Wanderer barks a bitter laugh at your silence. âWanna find out more about Dottoreâs experiments?â he sneers. âWhat exactly happened with the Raiden Gokaden?â
âWhatâ no.â You couldnât give less of a shit about the Gokaden. âI just wanted to ask if youâreâ are you okay?â
âAm Iâ? Forget it.â Even his breaths are heavy, and furious. âYou know now, and youâre welcome. Happy?â
What is going on? Is he angry or hurt or sad? Or are you? You have no clue. All you know is that he looks and you feel stormier than even Seirai right now.Â
âHow,â you say, and your voice has risen the way his has, dangerously close to a shout. The sky behind him is rimmed with a deep, bloody red. âHow am I supposed to be happy hearing that? And why are you mad at me when Iâve done nothing wrong at all? And that asideââ you step forward to hurriedly take his hands in yours but theyâre stiff, almost wooden to the touch. Uncaring, you force them into yours, wrapping your fingers around his tightly, hoping your hands can press the warmth back into his, the warmth that the wind had just blown away.Â
âWanderer,â you whisper, insistent, and he turns his head to the side to look past you. âWhat the hell?â You hiss. âLook at me!â
He turns to you, and there's a cool look of almost⌠disconnect in his eyes. He lets out a breath and wrenches his hands from yours.
âI'm fine,â he says. Curtly, but not quite coldly. There's a tautness to his jaw, a tenseness to his shoulders that reaches all the way to his half curled fingers. When he sneers at you then, you can trust the verity of his disdain. âNow hopefully you can stop asking Aqaba and Kaedehara and Archons knows who else about me. Happy?â
âOkay, cool off.â You put your hands on his shoulders with a frown and forced calm. He somehow looks more pained than soothed. âI don't know why you're mad and I won't if you don't tell me why. And yeah, I guess I'm happy to know, but I'm sorry all that happened? We can talk about it, if you wantâ?â
Wanderer grits his teeth. When he lets out an exhale, you feel it brush against your lips. âAre you going to stop pestering Kaedehara about the Gokaden, or not?â
Your mouth falls open. What the fuck is up with this guy?Â
âYes, I am!â You cry. âAnd if me bothering him made you so mad, you should have told me that right from the start, instead ofââ
âI don't care about you talking to him.âÂ
Huh?
âThen what is this about?â
He grips your elbows and all of a sudden, his hands are warm, warm. You didnât quite realise just how close heâd gotten until he presses his forehead to yours, looking incensed.Â
Not until he brushes his lips to yours, and you freeze, wide eyed. And when all you do is blink at him, breathless, body warming, your hands tightening on his shoulders, he steps even closer, impossibly soâ until his chest brushes yours and his fingers dig into your hips, until he shuts his eyes and kisses you.
Your brain barely registers what youâre even doing before youâve thrown an arm over his shoulders, the other wrapped firmly round his neck. Youâre nothing but want coalesced into one warm being, wrapping around him in a breathless daze.
His lips, cooled first by the wind warm rapidly as yours caress them, insistently pressing and kissing with an urgency that has him gasping into your mouth. His lips part so prettily you can hardly resist brushing at his mouth with your tongue, his own coming to press against yours for a moment. Grabbing him, you yank him even closer, and his head tips back as you break away to pant against his cheek before heâs hovering and forcing your head back with a vengeance, your face cupped in his palms as he kisses you with a passion. A string of spit slides slowly down from the corner of your lips and you grab at his forearms to pull him closer to your torso, to hear him gasp again into your mouth when he suddenly pulls away, burying his face in a hand, and the moment shatters like glass.Â
Shit.Â
No. No. No. What have you done? What has he done? Thereâs a sinking feeling in your abdomen that grows only bigger and bigger, engulfing you whole. Wanderer floats above you, staring to the side at the city below, mouth covered with a hand. You can see pink marr the soft skin of his arms where you grabbed him to pull you closer, and if you werenât heaving for breath already youâd instantly have started apologizing for whatever the fuck this was.
âHey,â you pant. God, whatâ? What is even going on right now? Too much is happening and youâre nothing if not confused.
When you look up at Wanderer, and can feel him straining to keep his composure, all the way from here. A tiny, impetuous part of you wants to grab his hand and yank it off his face so you could see his lips, which are likely pink and swollen and glistening. But him not respondingâ him keeping his eyes steadily on the cityâ strikes a little fear into your heart for the very first time.
Wanderer never scares you. He irks you, he gladdens you, he makes you rage and laugh and weepâ youâve never wanted to cower from him before.
But right now, suspended above you, is a puppet that nearly twice became a god, that very nearly became the third Shogun, that kissed you so fervently you cleanly lost your senses, and more than anything, youâre terrifiedâ that if you scare him now, heâll leave and youâd never know. He could sleep for a hundred years if he wanted, to just wait for your passing. He could fly away right now, andâ
âWhat?â He softly asks, finally looking down at you, and in the hulking shadows of the Divine Tree, for a moment, he looks just so small, the blues of his attire swallowed whole by the bloodred behind.Â
You donât know what to say.
His shoulders relaxâ regal as he is, they never slumpâ and he lets out a heavy exhale, looking like a god passing judgement. The feather by his heart flutters as a reminder of his divine origin, and for the first time in your life you wish you were an immortal, any immortal, so you could chase him for a hundred years, so you could begin to even find him and beg his forgiveness. For what, youâre not quite sure. And yet.
âIâm sorry,â you whisper, in a voice so low no mortal would hear.
Wanderer does.
âYouâre sorry,â he echoes, looking as though all the worldâs fight and fury just left for the sunset through his lips when he spoke. âYouâre sorry.â
Youâve never seen him make that face before.
Itâs the barest expression. Just pursed lips and downcast eyes, his shoulders rising as he exhales again. Heâs barely moved and yet he looks like heâs slouching into himself, looking not regal, not immortal, just⌠sad.Â
âIâm sorry too, then.â
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
You end up going to Sabzeruz with Kazuha.
Wanderer goes too, of course, with Nahida. He stands behind her whilst she happily prances around, looking so sincerely ecstatic at the decorations and festival stalls and her people celebrating her that it paints your smile into a wide, genuine one, even if just for a moment.Â
For the first time in your life, though, Wanderer is completely unreadable to you. You canât get a feel for his emotions at all, or even whether theyâre on the positive side or otherwise. Heâs a statue, a dollâ a puppet, standing behind Nahida, accompanying her.Â
You see them converse, and whenever she sets her eyes on him, you fancy they look a little rueful. But their parade soon passes by, and the rest of your day is spent with Kazuha.
Heâs gentlemanly, his tongue silken and his calloused fingers gentle when they tug you away from a snail you would otherwise have stepped on. When heâs occupied with coaxing it on a leaf to put it somewhere safe, your mind wanders to someone rude, with a barbed tongue and the softest hands youâve known.
You host Kazuha for some days before he has to leave again, and your heart stings when you see him seated on the couch that heâd otherwise be sprawled on, when Kazuha sweetly compliments your cooking and someone elseâs words ring in your mind, softness sealed tightly beneath leagues of sardonic ribbons.
When itâs time for Kazuha to leave, he presses one of your hands in both of his, squeezing them in thanks. When you smile at him in return, he tells you gently that he hopes things work out for you and that hatted gentlemanâ the one that glanced at you all throughout Sabzeruz.

Part II: Serendipity.
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
Wanderer still hasnât talked to you.
Still hasnât visited, hasnât so much as glanced your way in the hallways, asked you to move aside in the bazaar, opting to take a longer route instead.Â
Whatever molten anguish youâd felt that day has since solidified into quiet, red hot anger.
He used to be such a frequent visitor that your home was well supplied with food enough for twoâ and hell, even to his taste. His toothbrush in the bathroom is pristine and stiffâ he used this new one perhaps twice or thrice before. Well.
Leaving his things out is a painful reminder of him, and, you quietly think to yourselfâ it's almost, no, fully foolish. Embarrassing, even.Â
A month has passed, now nearly two. A new year is nearly upon youâ it's just a week or two away, so close you can hear it murmuring round the corner, telling January to be a bit quicker than the previous yearâs, and begging March to be exceedingly slow for no reason at all.Â
You remember being out on a walk with Wanderer the previous New Year's Eve, giggling as you eavesdropped onto the various resolutions being made around you. A bit mean, but hey, it's not like most people ever stick by those.
And the year before that, you'd been home, watching the fireworks from right here as you peeled and ate overripe oranges. He'd yawned, leaning prettily against a window frame, and you'd chucked an orange segment right into his mouth, making him choke on it for several seconds. Heâd chased you all around the house with a vengeance, and youâd subsequently missed most of the lovely display.Â
You hadnât minded in the slightest.
And the year before thatâno. You force yourself to stop. Reminiscence only stings.
Although⌠Now that you think about it, youâve never spent the new year without Wanderer before. Not since youâve met. Not that it mattersâ youâll be fine. Perhaps you could go pay your family a visit. Perhaps you could go out with some other friendsâ theyâll be happy to see you venturing out voluntarily, youâre sure. You could touch so much grass that way.
But, truth be told, you donât really feel up to a party. Itâs the last month of the year, and itâs cold, and cold means you celebrate inside, with warm food and cards and chatter. Maybe you could call your friends over. But, you know. The new year could serve as a new beginning, a chance to nurture healthy habits. To eat something homemade and sleep at nine, youâd have to do with just a friend or two. Preferably just one.
On the New Year's Eve two years ago, Wanderer had helped you make a tiny bonfire in a large, broken pot on your balcony. He was surprisingly good at lighting fires. (You wonder if the fall of the Raiden Gokaden involves arson, somehow.)
Reaching over in the dark, you grope around your bedside table for a water bottle, and your hand brushes against some pins, a shirt youâve been wondering whether or not to wash, and your mora pouch.
(That reminds youâ you havenât begun searching for a present for Wanderer yet.)
Andâ fine, maybe it wasnât so much about the new year. Maybe it was more about his birthday. So what?
You heave a soft sigh.
Itâs one in the morning. Or is it two? Either way, it is late and you cannot fall asleep. Thereâs restless, jittery sparkles tumbling around inside your torso, leaving little trails of excited warmth wherever they go. You need to get them out somehow. Perhaps a walk would do the trick.
Is it worth risking at this hour? you wonder. Just how high up on the stupid scale would I rank for taking a walk out at this hour in just my nightclothes and a cardigan?
Pretty fuckin stupid, if you ask me, another voice in your head whispers. This one sounds an awful lot like Wanderer. Archons, you need to get him off your mind. This is insanity.
You know what? Perhaps the sheer anxiety of taking a walk out at this hour might distract you from him for a short while.
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
Yeah, no, never mind.Â
Today is not a day for walking. Well, tonight, and night. There had been a cloying breeze carding through your hair, through the leaves when youâd swept out of the house, wrapping your cardigan tight around you like an angry grandma. The moon had been playing peek-a-boo with the fast moving clouds already, but you hadnât expected them to lovingly engulf her so soon. By then, though, you were halfway up the Akademiya slopes already, and so sunk cost fallacy for a mission you hadnât even realised you were carrying out had effectively reeled you in.
Some sweet folks from the Corp of Thirty had already offered to walk you home, concern plainly painted across their faces, but youâd declined. You were on A Mission.
In the dim hours of the night, you tip your head up and confess quietly to the stormy skyâ you miss Wanderer, and like any good scholar, when faced with a problem, your first few instincts were to despair and whine, before your sleepy yet simultaneously restless mind decided to steer you towards the sourceâ to try and fix it in the quickest way possible.
Getting over him isnât an option. Weeks spent in his absence have given you more spare time than you knew what to do with, and it had allowed you to quietly, angrily compose yourself. Pissed or no, you were going to find and drag him back into your life. It's not fairâ did all those years of friendship mean nothing to him? (You know for a fact they hadâ by the Archon, heâd kissed you. What a stupid thing to run from. Were you really such a terrible kisser?)
You square your shoulders grimly, wondering which way to go. Go home? You really, really donât want to. The other option⌠Well, the guards at the Sanctuary of Surasthana would not be happy to see you in the slightest, no matter how friendly they were with you ordinarily. Imposing upon your Archonâs place of rest is easily the most uncouth thing youâll have done this year, if you really go through with this. Argh, the things you do for love.
You should be able to fix things. It canât be that hardâ heâs not stupid. You just need to find him. Maybe you could ask the guards to take just the littlest peek inside? And call out to him, perhaps?
But what if heâs not home at all?
You clutch your chest as whispered doubts and what-ifs spin around your mind in a hazy, whirling dance. Youâve kept yourself busy to avoid thinking of him, but itâs been difficult to truly lock it all away, and now as you watch a stray cat streak over to a dog, whoâ much to your surpriseâ attempts to clumsily play with it instead of barking up a stormâ you admit to yourselfâ not only do you miss him, you miss him badly.Â
The gall of him, to kiss you and vanish. Youâve racked your mind to figure out what the hell that meant. (You know what it meant, you know you do. But you kissed him back, so why the fuck did he run away?)Â
âWhat the fuck does that mean,â you hiss, burying your face in your hands. The Corp members standing some distance behind you glance concernedly at one another.
âHey,â one of them calls out, a worried frown on his face. You know this one. Youâve seen him around. Heâs cute, and incredibly sweet. You know it, because sometimes you see him playing catch with some kids, and youâve seen him feed every single animal he seems to come across. Youâve seen this guy manage to coax even a finch on his finger, once.
Finches are always following Wanderer around, your brain whispers, and your eyes sting a little.
âYeah?â You respond, voice wobbly with sudden emotion, and the guy instantly looks at you with so much worry in his eyes you nearly throw yourself at him to let it all out in his arms.Â
âYou sure youâre okay?â He asks, concerned. Youâre about to heroically tell him youâre fine, when someone else interjects.
âWhatâs going on here?â
Right on cue, thereâs the briefest flash of lightning in the distance before a giant crack of thunder rolls all over Sumeru city, making it tremble beneath you. Or perhaps itâs you thatâs shaking. Soft, damp pinpricks of water land on the ground, expanding gently as they soak into the dust. All you can do is just stare at Wanderer, nonplussed, as it truly begins to pour.
âŚââââââââââââââŚ
âDo you need a towel?âÂ
âThereâs one in here.â
âThatâs mine,â you say, and thereâs a pause. You sigh. âIf youâve used it already, whatever. Iâm gonna heat some milk up. You want any?â
âA cup. No honey.â
You sigh again. âI know.â You also know heâd rather have bitter tea, but youâre in no mood to exert more energy than is necessary right now, least of all for him. Itâs not like heâs monopolized pettiness.Â
You pad over to the kitchen, wrapping your cardigan tighter around yourself. The storm has picked up in earnest now, slamming against the Divine Tree, against your walls and windows. Itâs already successfully destroyed the potted plants in your balcony, which you canât bring yourself to care about right now. Youâre just glad you forgot to hang your laundry out today.Â
Wandererâs the one that brought you back home. Youâd walked at first and, when the wind picked up, heâd lifted you up in his arms and flown you both here at a speed that nearly had you shrieking. If, you muse as you pour some honey into your cup and lift the pan of hot milk off the stove, youâd felt slightly less petty, you really would have screamed.
Youâre busy pouring the milk into the mugs when your bathroom door swings open with a long creak, letting scented tendrils steam drift leisurely out.Â
Wanderer steps out, clad in some of your clothes. Theyâre ill fitting, but he looks alright nonetheless. Good, even, much to your chagrin. He always does. Ethereal beauty and all that. You roll your eyes as you leave his mug on your counter and walk over to your cabinet to get a spoon, refusing to offer any further acknowledgement.Â
Wanderer floats to sit on your counter, turning even something so mundane into something regal. Thatâs just how he is. (You wonder what Inazuma would have been like with a softer Archon, an Archon surrounded by finches. An Archon that sheds tears. Or shed, maybe? Youâve never known him to cry.)
âYouâre quiet,â he muses, breaking you out of your thoughts. Never one to shy away from confrontation, he stares straight at you over the rim of his cup as he takes a sip. He doesnât blow on it. Youâd normally be secretly beguiled by those eyes, but tonight you just stare sullenly back. Predictably enough, he doesnât react to your moodiness. Youâd figured he wouldnâtâ known that heâd never apologize first. Heâs too proud. Heâd never grovel, least of all for a little mortal like you.
But if he thinks his silence will turn you talkative, heâs dead wrong.Â
âAnd deaf, too,â he adds. âOr maybe just too uncreative to think of a good response.â
âI donât think I need to be creative for this at all,â you retort. (Maybe not that wrong.) He raises an eyebrow at that, and although thereâs no other change to his expression, you know heâs pleased.
âAnd,â you continue, composure dissolving at the audacity of this jerk, âdonât think you can come around and act the way you used to after leaving me for two months, with zero explanation!â Storming over, you slam your now-empty cup onto the counter with more force than is necessary. A long, splintering crack runs up its side, and you click your tongue, frustrated.
Wanderer only watches.
âAre you serious?â You demand into the silence. âYouâre not going to say anything? Youâre in my house, asshole, not a shitty motel youâre staying at for the night. Talk, or get out of here.â
Nothing couldâve prepared you for what he says next. âBut I just took a shower,â he complains, lounging on your counter, propping himself lazily up with an arm behind him. All of a sudden, heâs smiling, entirely too comfortably. His eyes glint with smug satisfaction, and you canât help but feel like youâre missing something. A knife, maybe. His fourth (fifth?) betrayal. Heavens, heâs infuriating. âSorry. Sunk cost fallacy. My favourite.â
You glare. âSunk cost fallacy sure didnât make you stick around by a years old friend,â you say bitterly. Wanderer just smiles, the very personification of delight. His eyes seem to shine brighter with every angry word that makes its way out your mouth. It serves only to piss you off further. âOr,â you hiss, âmaybe I donât even count as one? My mistake.â Saying so, you snatch the still mostly-full cup from his hands, forgetting in your anger that the milk inside was still hot, and his eyes widen, delight vanishing as quickly as it came.
âCareful!â he barks, but the warning comes too late.Â
Hot milk spills all over your arm, and you cry out in startlement, dropping the mug onto the ground. Being the good little mug that it is, it sullenly drops, spilling milk everywhere, but doesnât shatter. You wince and nudge it with your toe, and find that the handle has fallen off, but that itâs otherwise completely intact.
âFuckin loser,â you hiss at the mug on the counter. âLook what your sister can take.â
Shushing you angrily, Wanderer instantly yanks your hands in his and tugs them into the sink, turning on the taps. The pipes, cooled by the rain outside, let in water that is deliciously cold, soothing your overwarm skin nicely. You blink at him as he glares at your hands, lips parted in distress.
âIdiot!â He hisses. âGrabbing it out of my hands like that! Mortals truly are as foolish as they are fragile.â Saying so, he holds your hands firmly in place beneath the running water. You canât help but notice that he holds you by the elbows, not by the arms, where he thinks the burns are. Youâre pressed tight against his side like this, and the planes of his face are right next to yours. His hair is still damp. It smells like your shampoo.
âWell?â He demands, after several moments of you dumbly blinking at him. âHave you been burned stupid?â
Why is he like this? you think ruefully, sighing softly. But fine. You win.Â
Feeling your anger melt swiftly away, like a block of salt in running water, you wrench your arms gently out of his hands and turn the taps off. Smiling, you hold your arms out for Wanderer to see.
âI'm fine,â you say. âCompletely fine. It wasn't hot enough to burn me, it just stung a bit.â Looking carefully first at your expression, he turns his eyes towards your drenched, but otherwise completely normal, unblemished arms. Finally convinced, he pulls away, lips pursed.
Archons, it's hard to stay angry with him, especially now, with his eyes still strained with worry, lips pressed tightly together as he peers at your arms still, checking for himself. He's not furtiveâ he never is.Â
You've missed him so terribly.Â
You hadnât realised the potency of your jagged, angry hurt, twisting and scraping your heart, making it bleed blue and red and green. Hadnât realised how much you'd missed bumping into him, the playful smacks and shoves, and on occasion, linked hands. Not until now. Even just this, just his concerned touch, is enough to send the familiar warmth of heartfelt affection coursing through you once more.
You remember when he'd grabbed your bicep on your birthday once, and risen ominously in the air, you shrieking with terror, him chuckling and giving no other answer. The way he'd then grabbed you by the waist and sped through the branches, bursting out of the smooth, tender, newly grown leaves of the Divine Treeâs crown. From up in his arms, you'd seen all of Sumeru City laid beneath you, beyond a soft blanket comprising entirely of new life, the giant treeâs teeny baby leaves. It had been surreal.
What had made it more surreal was the realisation that even in the face of this impressive vantage point, a small voice in your mind had shyly pointed out just how gently you were cradled in his arms, and sent warmth coursing from your cheeks and neck to every inch of you.
And so when he pulls his hands away from yours, here in your kitchen, you throw your arms around him, burying your face in his hair. It's what he deserves, for kissing you out of nowhere and vanishing without a word. You tighten your arms around him, face warming when you remember the way he'd gasped against your lips.
Wanderer doesnât hug you back, but he doesn't push you away, either.
Instead, after a long pause, he says, âyou're stepping in the milk.â His voice is audible and real and close, right here, right next to your ear. âGross.â
âI'll clean it up later,â you mumble. Archons, heâs here. Thereâs a long conversation to be had with him, about his past and your future, but it can wait for now. âHug me back first.â
âPathetic. First you throw a fit and now you expect me to hug you back? Have at least a kernel of pride.â
âShut up.â There's no bite to your words, nor his. You wonder where you put your jar of shitty, bitter tea leaves.
Wanderer breaks you out of your thoughts by sighing against your shoulder and finally bringing his arms up to wrap around you. They're firmer than a humanâs would be. Divine strength encased in unassuming, slender arms and soft, unblemished hands. When he tugs you closer, you have no choice but to lean into him, shutting your eyes tight as you bury your face into his neck.
After several long seconds, Wanderer warily asksâ âwhen are you setting me free?â And you laugh softly into his shoulder, consumed by relief.
You give no other answer. You don't pull away, though, and neither does he.
You only speak several moments later to warnâ âI'm not letting go first, mind you.âÂ
âIs this a competition?â He quickly returns. âIf it isâ well, can't say I particularly care, but I'm not fond of losing.â
âIsn't the bigger loss to hug me forever?â
âNo.â
You blink. âNo? That's a surprise.â
He heaves a heavy sigh. âFool. Would I have kissed you if it was?â
You freeze. He freezes too. For just a moment, the storm stills as well, before lightning crackles in the distance with the sound of a thousand sticks shattering, and the rain picks up again.
You pull away.
If Wanderer had ears, youâre sure theyâd be flat against his head. His shoulders are held sideways and upright, head tipped highâ the prouder he looks, the more disconcerted he is, and right now he looks as though he were standing on the threshold of a mansion made entirely of gold.
You, though, are entirely too tired for pretenses. It is four in the morning. You simply do not have the time.Â
And so, you tug Wanderer out of the milk puddle, and cup his face in your hands to kiss him once again.
Youâve barely tugged him closer when his hands are on your waistâ gentler and more uncertain this time, featherlight fingers brushing your hips, making you jerk awayâ they tickle. When he steps away, forehead creased with worry, you groan.
âMan, please. Can I kiss you or not?â
âCan Iâ you just jumped away like a fucking frogââ
âThatâs because you tickled me, smartass!â
âArchons,â he hisses, annoyed, and youâre struck dumb once again by just how pretty he is. âJust come here.â
âNot that easily.â You cross your arms. âSay please.â
His eye twitches. Youâre having way too much fun. You know heâll never actually begâ please is not a word heâs on friendly terms withâ but even so. Heâs here, in your kitchen once again, and your socks are soaked in milkâ which has now turned sticky and cold and you cannot wait to change out of them and climb into bed. Youâre definitely not leaving the house tomoâ today. Thank goodness for the storm. Itâs an easy excuse to stay home.Â
Youâre busy thanking whoever the Shogun is for the storm sheâs so benevolently sent your way, when an exasperated sigh breaks you out of your thoughts.
â...please.â
âWhat?â Did you hear that right? Did he just say please? Did he?
âIâm not gonna say it again, you hear,â he huffs, as your eyes widen in delight. âNow come here.â
âNuh uh.â You cross your arms, snickering rather meanly. âExplain yourself first, then I might.â
âAre you serious?â He spreads his arms, looking both frustrated and amused now. âDoes now look like the time?â
âThe audacityâ you pissed me off in my own houseââ
âI just want to kiss you and head to bed, is that so much to ask for?â
You narrow your eyes at him as you peel off your socks and drop them onto the floor with a wet thlop. Might as well talk a little now when you can. Youâre definitely taking a day off tomâ today.
âIâll talk to you in bed and then kiss you. Howâs that sound?â
He sighs as he peels his own wet socks off and tosses them atop yours. You both look at the soggy pile for a long moment before grimly nodding at one anotherâ youâll deal with that toâday. But several hours later.
Some minutes later, youâre finally in bed, warm and happy, with little bubbles of giddiness floatily making their way from your lungs up your throat, popping just behind your tongue. Wanderer crawls in next to you, setting a water bottle down on your bedside table.
âGreat,â he says. âLetâs talk.â
âLetâs talk,â you echo, with an annoying inflection to your voice that makes him snort. You mimic the snort too, and he sighs.
âI think staying up this late is starting to drive you a bit insane.â
âBe nice to me or get out of my bed.â
âYou are a normal, functional human being.â
You beam. âThank you.â
Propping himself up on an elbow, he looks at you for a long, searching moment. The lamplight casts him in the softest glow, making him look a little like an oil painting. âNow,â he says. âLetâs talk.â
âIâll cut to the chase because unlike some peopleââ you raise your eyebrows meaningfullyâ âIâm not a coward. Ergo I donât kiss pretty people and run away.â
âPretty?â He scoffs. âIf you were just pretty, I wouldnât look twice at you.â Waitâ oh, he wasnât insulting you. By the moon, does he have to say the sweetest things in the most scathing way? (You wonder why you even ask yourself these things when you know the answer to that is yes.)
âIâ okay. Thank you.â You bite back a smile. God. A single compliment, if it can even be called that, and yet. âSo. You do like me?â
âI despise the way mortals speak of their romances this era.â He rolls his eyes. âIf I just liked youââ
âYes, okay, okay. Settle down.â You reach out to pat his head and he scoffs, but thereâs a smile on his lips nonetheless.Â
âIâm not a dog.â
âIt talks!â
âShut up.â
A mosquito comes buzzing along, whispering sweet nothings in your ear in its reedy voice. Wanderer swats it away.Â
For some moments, you just lay there, wrapped in the remnants of his voice playing in your head, in your blankets that reflect the warmth of your own body, and his. You throw a leg over his thighs as you shuffle closer and he shifts to make more room for you on his pillow. When you rest your head by his chest, he lays his cheek against your temple, slinging an arm over your torso.
âSo?â He asks, and for once his voice is just⌠soft. Just there. Wanderer talks a lot about hating added flavour, claiming to love bitter tea because its reality isnât cloaked by cloying sweetness or distracting spices, but heâs guilty of just that. Painting himself with the most unfavourable, forthright brush.Â
Words and tones are different. If he really wanted neutrality, ought he not sound more civil? I just tell it like it is, he says, wrapping his blunt words in serrated, barbed ribbons called sarcasm and hauteur.Â
Right now, though, the ribbons are off, and his bluntness is accompanied by only his honest, true self. âI love you,â he says, and your heart does a happy little loop in your chest. Your fingers tighten their grip on hisâ your shirt. âDo you love me? Just say yes and kiss me quick.â
Your joy is so visceral the joyous bubbles in your chest may as well be real and tangible. You imagine opening your mouth and blasting him with them, and laugh softly into his chest. Against your temple, you feel him smile.
âTo think I was scared of you.â
âDamn. That really is honest.â Still smiling, you look up at him, your eyes alight with affection. And, skies above, he has no heart but he swears his chest hurts.
âI love you,â you say, the words forming so, so prettily on your warm lips. When he brings a finger up to trace the outline of them, and you kiss his fingertips. He cards them through your hair, stroking it away from your face so he can see you betterâ the shape of your eyes, the curve of your lips, the ridge of your nose. Here, pressed against you, in your room, beneath your blankets, he basks in your scent, in your presence. It makes his face flush a little, and you trail a finger from his cheekbone to his neck. Grabbing your hand in his, he pins it loosely beside you as you shift onto your back.
Leaning closer, he presses his forehead to yours, deliberately squishing your nose. You laugh again, right against his mouth, then reach up to kiss him a second time.
@cloudyheartt here's Wanderer! I hope you like it <3
synopsisďšthinking about college life with dan heng as your partner...
wc ⢠~1.2k, hcs + a drabble
a/n ⢠first post, kinda nervous... i'm just severely brainrotted over dan heng atm. i just wrote whatever came to mind first :')
the two of you started off as rivals: your first interaction was a class debate in high school about whether napoleon was a revolutionary hero or an authoritarian tyrant. you got pretty heated about the topic, while dan heng remained calm about his stance. legend says the debate is on going to this day...
and if anyone ever asked why he, of all people, kept this argument alive until now, dan heng would never admit that it wasn't about proving his views on napoleonâ but rather, it was about you.
currently, the two of you attend the same college, and it feels significantly different from high school. especially, since dan heng is now your lover.
⌠when you get little to no sleep before a lecture, dan heng tries his best to keep you awakeâ kicking your foot, shaking your shoulder, even blowing in your earâ he's really tried everything, but sleep takes over anyway. dan heng would never admit it, but he finds your sleeping face pretty cute. due to how often you fall asleep, he probably has a secret album on his phone filled with photos of you napping.
⌠speaking of photos, dan heng probably kept up with his photography hobby since high school, possibly even pursuing it as a minor. nevertheless, he likes to snap few pictures of you after school, during events, etc. need a photo to post? he's got you covered.
⌠when the lens turn to him, dan heng doesn't enjoy being photographed. let's suppose he's just a little camera shy. it takes a kiss or two to get him to cooperate for a selfie. i mean, if he's allowed to have over a hundred photos of you on his phone, you need a few of him at least!
⌠dan heng definitely has an album of polaroids the two of you took throughout your school life. the photos range from candid shots, to chaste kisses. naturally, dan heng also wrote the date down in thin, precise sharpie. thanks to his spectacular organization, it's evident that the two of you grow closer with every polaroid. you noticed an empty spot in the album one day, and unbeknownst to you, the missing photo served as his bookmark. it was a simple photo of you smiling. but that alone made him smile too.
⌠dan heng would give you his notes if you asked him. in fact, you don't even need to ask sometimes... he probably saw you scrolling on social media, or doing anything but listening to the lecture. his handwriting is too similar to the declaration of independence: perfect, neat, and in script. you asked him one too many times to translate his chicken scratch, to which dan heng lets out a heavy sigh.
⌠study sessions would go so hard with dan heng. the two of you always go to the local cafe and sit down two tables away from the window (he frequently complains about the glare on his laptop from the sun). after you set down your respective drinks, dan heng mumbles a thanks and gently reminds you to get to work. lastly, he never forgets to pass you an airbud. dan heng probably gets accused of being performative way too often.
⌠during these sessions, you can occassionally catch dan heng staring a moment too long. asking him about it leads to an indifferent reply, but you swear that the tips of his ears are slightly pink. inquire him further, and he ignores you, attempting to focus on work instead.
⌠on other days, you might fall asleep while workingâ don't worry, dan heng is keeping watch as you take a quick nap. he resists the urge to card his fingers through your hair, but eventually gives in to tuck loose hair behind your ear in a tender, practiced manner.
⌠some days, mismatched schedules meant you were left alone to study in the library. but even so, dan heng surprises you with your favorite drink. you ask how the hell he knew you were in there, to which he shrugs and says it was merely intuition. when he leaves for his next class, you pick up the cup to take a sip, but notice a sticky note beneath the sleeve: "take a break. you're doing well."
⌠in the rare moments you two go to his or your dorm to study instead, there's no doubt that he's always distracted by you and your affections. he's definitely not big on pda, so you respect his boundaries in public. in private? there's no way you're letting him study!
"dan heng, you've been studying for two hours now."
you gently prodded his cheek, hoping to catch a bit of attention from your hardworking boyfriend.
"...enough, [name]. please stop distracting me." dan heng murmured, trying his best not to divert his attention to your antics.
as much as you loved dan heng with his stupidly adorable glasses perched on his nose, you really just wanted to spend some time with him now that exam season was over. unfortunately, it seemed like dan heng wasn't planning to beat nerd allegations anytime soon.
leaning a little closer, you take off dan heng's glasses with a small pout. before dan heng could even think to protest, you quickly put your index finger against his lips.
"let's take a break, please?" you pleaded softly.
after a few moments of silence, you basically hear dan heng give up all hope as he lets out a big, exaggerated sigh.
"fine. a five minute break will suffice."
dan heng could see your sullen face bloom into an expression of pure joy. he watches as you work quickly to remove the overheating laptop from his lap, replacing it with your very presence.
"this is exactly why i don't want to study at either of our dorms," dan heng comments, sounding defeated, "you end up coercing me intoâ"
dan heng goes silent when you embrace him from the side without much warning. he's rarely off guard, but when it comes to you, it happens way too often.
aeons, it must be your alluring scentâ warm, familiar, and impossibly soothingâ combined with the ticklish feeling of your hair seeping into his skin, breaching walls he thought were impenetrableâŚ
without even realizing it, dan heng found himself burying his face into your shoulder.
"âŚdan heng? hey, what's wrong?" you worriedly mumble, rubbing his back for comfort. it wasn't often dan heng just dipped his head and willingly abandoned caution.
"nothing," he murmured without much thought, "just⌠keep doing that."
you let out a soft laugh at his barely audible words, humming as your hand continued to rhythmatically pat his back.
dan heng could feel himself unraveling at your touch, with thoughts of college and deadlines disappearing for this very moment.
perhaps, dan heng began to realize that the most interesting study of all, is how you love himâ endlessly, unconditionally, and without expectation.
When you find the maroon-furred fox, it is dark, but not yet dark enough to hide the divine blood crusting the mouth of the metal trap in red.
The traps are new, recently imported from across the sea, with hard steel teeth and a spring mechanism strong enough to bite through bone: a far cry from the bait-and-netting strategy your village still uses. You do not agree with the method, but it yields results, and from what you have heard, prey is harder to come by these days. Nevertheless, to set these traps on the outskirts of Chinju Forest strikes you as particularly negligentâthe work of either a fool or a threat.Â
The fox lies with its back leg ensnared in the metal jaws. You approach with trepidation, creeping towards it through the shaded underbrush. Cricketsong chirrs around you; mosquitos whine past your ears as you approach. A twig snags on the hem of your sleeve. Carefully, you release it, and carry on.Â
The foxâs eyes snap open and land on you. Their colour is a striking green, like budding leaves in spring. Its look is almost electric. You feel a shock slam through your body, paralysing you as would a lightning strike. Whatever you are nearing, it is of power far surpassing that which you normally find here. You hesitate for a moment longer before advancing further. You are, after all, no stranger to the mystical forces which govern these woods.
You kneel down in the grass and place your hands on the trap. (You will have to find some way to wash your hakama before the new sun risesâbut that is a concern for when you return to the shrine.) To no avail, you try to prise the teeth apart. The mechanism is too strong, and your fingers slip on the blood. The fox watches you, unmoving and silent, as the red stains creep further into the grass. From the half-dried appearance of the blood, and keeping in mind the humidity of summer, you surmise it must have been no more than a few hours since the fox was caught. Strange, then, that no flies have come to feed from it.
You search the forest floor for something you can use to assist your effort. Twigs and stones litter the ground in abundance, either too thin or too small to be of any advantage. Wandering a little further away, you find a branch of aralia lying beside a tanuki statue, fallen from one of the trees overhead. You bow your head to the statue before you take the branch back to the fox, and the trap.
You insert the end of the stick into the crack between the metal teeth and push. The trap opens, by a sliver. You push harder. The gap widens, inch by reluctant inch, until there is room for the fox to remove its mangled leg. With a quiet yelp, it wriggles free of the trap and limps away a few paces. You let go. The jaws snap back into place.Â
The fox stops and fixes you with a stare. Intelligence flashes in its eyes, bright as lanterns. You draw in a breath in spite of yourself. Now that it is no longer caught in the trap, the severity of the foxâs injury is more evident. White bone pokes through glistening sinew and muscle on the lower part of its back leg, bent at unnatural angles where it is not crushed altogether. If left untended to, an infection may very well end the foxâs life where starvation in the trap has not. Â
You mean to treat it somehowâtake the fox back to the shrine, perhaps, or fetch medical supplies from elsewhereâbut the animal starts the moment you take another step forwards, springing away into the underbrush in a streak of maroon before you can close the distance any further.Â
It is getting late. You hurry back to Grand Narukami Shrine before the night can grow any deeper. On the way, you stop at one of the many Inari shrines built beside the mountain path, and make a prayer and an offering of incense. May the goddess take good care of her servant, you think as you lay your smoking incense stick in the bowl.Â
You remove your geta sandals before slipping into the sleeping quarters of the Narukami Shrine complex. Treading softly on the edges of your feet so as not to disturb anyone, you slide the fusuma shut behind you with a soft click and pad further into the room. Nobody stirs when you wash and wring out your hakama above the wooden washbasin, nor when you undress and join your fellow miko on your futon at the edge of the tatami mats.Â
As you fall asleep that night, an image remains stuck in your mind: a pair of eyes, the colour of leaves in spring.
ââââââ
The next morning, you find a young man waiting outside your sleeping quarters. You have risen early, before the others wake, and dressed under the shelter of darkness. It is not that you are unable to clothe in the presence of others, but rather a distinct preference of yours which has grown habitual over time. When you step outside, ready to begin your morning by sweeping the floors of the main shrine, you see him. You are certain you have never met before, but he strikes you as strangely familiar.Â
The man wears a dark brown haori tied around his waist, at once lending him a decided air of unkemptness. His hair, tousled and unshaven, is the same shade of burgundy as the coat of that fox from last night, and his eyes are a striking green, each marked beneath by a dark dot. There is an off-balance in his stance which you initially put down to his laid-back postureâbut on closer examination, it seems he is avoiding placing weight on one side of his body. Your eyes trail down to his left leg, where they land on a streak of stained bandage which pokes out from beneath his hakama.Â
You stoop into a low bow. âYou are very welcome at the Grand Narukami Shrine. Please, why have you come here?âÂ
âA kitsune always returns a favour,â the young man answers, shrugging, âand you saved my life last night. In turn, Iâm indebted to you.â
âIndebted how?â you ask.Â
âTo ensure your safety and longevity. You can think of me as a kind of guardian spirit, if that helps.â
âVery well.â You consider this development briefly. Certainly you had not expected to gain the favour of a divine spirit when you snuck out last night, but neither is it an unwelcome surprise. Although⌠you do not know precisely what the guardianship of such a spirit entails. How much privacy you will have, for instance. You place these thoughts aside and decide to focus on what is in front of you first. âIf you are to act as my guardian,â you say, âthen please, what may I call you?â
âJust âHeizouâ is fine,â he replies.Â
You smile at the spiritâs evident sense of humour. âYour joke is amusing, but Iâm afraid I cannot refer to you so crudely.â
The man frowns and tips his head to the side in an animal-like fashion. His green eyes are sharp, like sparkling knives. âA joke? Human âjokesâ are told for the purpose of entertainment, yes?â When you affirm his conjecture, he says, âThen no, that wasnât a joke.â
You stare at the spirit in front of you, hiding perplexity beneath your unfettered expression. âBut to refer to you by your first name alone⌠only those closest to each other do such a thing. I cannot call upon a divine spirit in the same way I would an old friend.â
He tips his head now towards the other side. âWhy not?â
âIt is disrespectful towards you.â
âWho says itâs disrespectful?âÂ
You frown. âItâs tradition, the way our business is conducted. Respect must be given wherever respect is owed, and you are the servant of a kami.â
A smirk lifts the corner of his lip and reveals the flash of a pointed canine. âAnd this âtraditionâ of yours is why a shrine maiden was creeping around the spirit-riddled forest at night all by herself?â
You wince a little behind your uniform mask, not only because his point is fair. The white kosode around your torso constricts for a moment. He may have been the one in the hunting trap, but at this moment, you feel like the one caught between metal jaws.Â
It is only for a moment that you falter. You soon collect yourself and maintain calmly, âIf you are here because I saved your life, surely you are able to tell me your name in return.â
Something in the kitsuneâs expression has changed. That intelligent green glint in his eyes surfaces again, sharpened further with keen interest, and he observes you in so calculating a manner that you cannot help but feel you let something slip which you should not have. A twitch of his vulpine ears reminds you how far removed from human this being is, despite his outward appearance.Â
After an enduring moment of scrutiny, he gives in. You find yourself thankful that his eyes shift away from you to somewhere in the distance. âAiyaya, humans are such stubborn creatures, arenât they?â he says at last, sighing exaggeratedly. âBut fine, fine. I suppose the name Shikanoin would be more acceptable to you, wouldnât it?â
âShikanoin-sama,â you begin, bowing towards him once again, âI am grateful for your presence, but may I ask how long you plan to stay here?â
The kitsune, Shikanoin, looks at you like the answer is obvious. âThe rest of your life, of course.â
overview: of course, itâs a given that the brilliant detective shikanoin heizou will be curious â be it about crimes, or your life.

notes: FINALLY WROTE A HEIZOU FIC FOR THE FUNSIES đŤśđť i love him so much you guys!! also disclaimer!! some spoilers from the residence are mentioned, and . . . kissyfreak heizou đđťââď¸ââĄď¸đđťââď¸ââĄď¸đđťââď¸ââĄď¸ you have been warned!! and also also also. new writing style/longest fic iâve posted so far??? zamn
I.Â
âAre you even watching?â
As the seventh episode of The Residence nears its end, you turn away from the television and glance at the burgundy-haired man behind you. Instead of his eyes focusing on the screens, his piercing green eyes are staring directly at you.
The two of you are in bed together. With you on his lap, and his arms wrapped around you.Â
Murder mystery nights have become a bonding activity after numerous stressful days at work. Both of you love to indulge in genres like this; Heizou likes to sharpen his mindâsince heâs so obsessed with puzzles and suchâand you love the thrill in learning more about unfamiliar cases, even if they do hurt your brain sometimes.Â
âOf course I am,â Heizou says, as he tilts his head innocently. âWhat makes you think Iâm not?â
You recall the times he has kissed your shoulder, cheek, and temple the whole time the characters, Cordelia Cupp and Harry Hollinger, talked. âIf this is one of your strategies to lose my focus again. . .â You start, narrowing your eyes at him. âI paid attention to this episode. It wonât work.â
Heizou tilts his head more, a lopsided smile appearing on those lips of his. âWhat wonât work? Iâm justââ Lips make contact on your shoulder again, and your heart flutters. ââmm, admiring my sunshine. Nothing too unusual, donât you think?â
There is an urge to push him away. But there is also an urge to pull him closer.Â
âDo you even know whatâs happening in Episode 7 right now?âÂ
âWell, if you must know, Miss Cordelia Cupp returns to the US and investigates the engineer and the maid.â He replies, and your eyes catch his lips slowly curving into a smirk. He presses another fleeting kiss on your skin. âBut it makes me wonder. Why ask me? You did say you were paying attention.â
âHey now, youâre twisting my wordsââ
âMhm, and since you did ask what is happening in Episode 7, here, we learn from the detectiveâs interrogation that the engineer and the maid are in love with each other.â
âHeizouââ
âAnd now, Detective Cupp is about to piece the whole thing together. Sheâs processing all the information sheâs gathered - which will soon bring us to the next and final episode. The conclusion. Who, out of all the staff members inside the White House, killed AB Wynter?â
At that, the episode ends, making you blink in surprise. As your lips part open, it proceeds to the credit scene.Â
You can hear Heizou chuckling from behind. Of course he is. He digs his chin gently on your shoulder and tightens his hold on you.
âSo? Did you think I wasnât watching? I summarized the episode well enough, âno?â Heizou questions. As he comes closer to your ear, his voice lowers. âHate to break it to you, but I can adore you and watch The Residence at the same time. Itâs a feat Iâve mastered these past few series, you see?â
He chuckles again when you donât respond immediately. Youâre always so speechless when it comes to him. Instead, your next course of action is this: you let your cheeks heat up, like a sore loser, while he triumphantly celebrates his win by swaying his body.
He always wins when it comes to these. Be it solving mysteries, making and proving a point, or riling you up. You merely turn to the television again and pick up the remote, turning it off.Â
âOh? Are we not gonna watch the finale anymore?â
âIt can wait,â You tell him, though youâre aware that Heizou is being smug as always. Man is always one step ahead, you know that. You poke on his forehead. âLet that mind of yours rest for a bit.â
âBut itâs always active.â
âYeah, yeah. But let's talk about something else,â you begin. No more The Residence-related questions because heâs always going to have an answer anyway. You dip your head and assess the blanket bundled on your legs. âLetâs talk about tomorrow.â
âTomorrow?â
âWell. You.â You fiddle with your thumbs, unsure why youâre nervous to bring the following topic up. Or maybe you actually know why. âYouâre going to meet mom. For the first time.â
âMhm-mm.âÂ
âAnd, um - Iâm sorry you had to meet my mom for the first time like this.â You remark, finally glancing at him with a weak smile. âI know we talked about this, like meeting the parents and all that. We had a plan and everything, with dinner andââ
âShh, itâs no problem,â Heizou is quick to reassure you, his voice softening. It coaxes your apprehensive heart. His hand reaches for yours thatâs placed on your thigh, and both of your fingers intertwine automatically. âIâm still happy enough that Iâll be meeting her. It is long overdue, after all.â
âRight.â
âAnd hmm? My intuition tells me that you are overthinking things, again.â With that, you feel your cheeks heating up once more, due to the fact that he has caught you in the act. Is it really that obvious? âItâll be fine, my love. You have nothing to worry about.â
You frown, âThere are still instances where everything might get wrong.â
âStubborn as always,â He comments, and his other hand reaches out to your cheek, slightly squeezing it. âYet there are also instances where everything might get alright.â
âBut stillââ
âBut still. . . oh, no! Negative thoughts are about to be executed because three, two, one,â His lips collide with yours, and well, safe to say, his technique worked.Â
II.Â
On the way to your childhood home, Heizou from the passenger seat retains his charming smirk.
âItâs funny how you really are more worried than me. Iâm meeting the âparentâ, not you.â
âStill.â
From your peripheral, you can sense how Heizou shortens the distance between the two of you.Â
âDo I need to kiss you again?â
âH-Heizou, Iâm driving.â
III.
So this is how it happens: the door opens, and your mom, whoâs all smiles (thankfully), takes the two of you to the living room. Memories of running children for Onikabuto battles, early Christmases, and true crime binges on the TV come flashing in your mind. Oh, whereâd all the time go?
You break out of your reminiscence when Heizou finally speaks beside you.
âOh? I thought weâd be meeting with your mother tonight. I didnât know weâd meet up with your sister instead. Actually, you had a sister?â
Score. This makes your mother laugh so loudly in delight that she covers her lips with her fingers. âOh, you! Itâs me.â
You watch as Heizou gasps, though itâs evident in your eyes how heâs clearly on an act. No way he hasnât noticed that in front of him was your mother, when you already showed her pictures to him. You just playfully roll your eyes, with your lips threatening into a small smile.
âMan alive. You must be kidding, you look so young!â
But then again, Heizou is a detective, so he knows his way with people due to his experiences. So another point for him. Your mother seems to be enjoying Heizouâs presence so far, so this melts a bit of your anxiety.Â
âMy daughter is right, you are indeed charming. She talks so much about you!â
Because of that exposure, your eyes go wide. âMom, no need to mentionââ
âIs that so?â Heizou has his eyebrow lifted, and his hand placed on one hip. Thereâs no denying that he is going to tease you about this later, when you can see that small smirk making its appearance again to those soft lips of his.
So you immediately change the topic to prevent any further elaboration. âAnyway! Childhood home? Burglary?â But with a weak interjection.
Heizou just snickers. He faces your mother properly again. âMadam, itâs an honor to finally meet you.â He offers his hand, and shakes hands with your mother. âIâm a huge fan of your early workâtalking about this wonderful lady right here.â
And your mother is even more amused.
IV.
âOkay, so they did enter through the broken window, rifled through the drawers, andââ Heizou hums, and gestures toward the picture frame he sees. He grabs it, and presents it to you and your mother. ââmy tiny sweet, summer sunshine, in her tiny dress, holding a tiny seelie plush?â
âHeizou,â you call out to him, your cheeks heating up again. âWhat are you doing?â
âThatâs the very first of her plushies,â Your mother points out, and you canât help but be even more stunned. Sheâs entertaining him, and also calling out your mountain of plushies in your bedroom. âShe wouldnât let go of it to the point that she brought it to her daycare. It was practically glued at her side.â
Heizou coos at your younger selfâs image ( âis that so?â ), and your heart skips a beat at the sight. That kind of Heizou is not different to the Heizou when you are both alone together.
You cough, trying to push away those affectionate Heizou thoughts. âIf - if you must know, thatâs one of the original seelies before production stopped five years ago.â Then, you narrow your eyes at him. âContinue on with the investigation, Detective Heizou.â
He just smiles at you, and doesnât forget to wink. âCopy that. Anyway, the alarm company said that the break-in happened at around 7:30. Did anybody know that you were out at that time?â
âPeople who were with me at Hexenzirkel.â Your mother answers.
Sensing Heizouâs confusion, you elaborate, âItâs a wine club. Mom frequents it every now and then.â
âHow classy of you, Madam.â
Then, your mother gasps lightly. âOh, I just remembered. Aliceâs vacation house was also broken into several months ago.â
âAlice? One of the main members of Hexenzirkel? Thatâs interesting,â you claim. âHer vacation house is not too far from here. . . so really, thatâs interesting.â
âIt is. The odds of that happening are small. There are no coincidences,â Heizou states, and he puts on his signature pose - his thinking pose, where he taps on the side of his forehead. âYet my intuition tells me that Iâll have to look furthermore inside the Hexenzirkel. I may go undercover at the next wine club meeting to see if Iâll get any leads. Madam, think you can get me in?â
âI think I can arrange that, thereâs one after three days.â
âGreat. I have one final question.â Prepared for anymore, you brace yourself. But nothing can ever prepare you when Heizou suddenly reveals a project of yours back in high school. Itâs your diorama created in clay. Where, when, and how did he even get that?! âIs this her concept of utopia for her social sciences class? Why did it only have a 95 score? Iâll rate this a hundred. Not only because sheâs the love of my life, but the fact that there are lots of dogs.â
Your mother giggles, endeared. âShe loves dogs.âÂ
V.
âSometimes, my daughterâs a bit oblivious.â
âTell me about it. Before we dated, everytime weâre in the car, I always blasted Taylor Swiftâs You Belong With Me, and she still didnât notice! She thought I was just a big fan of Swift.â
( âI am right here,â you say in the background, while pouring yourself a cup of juice. )
âAre you a fan of Taylor Swift?â
âOf course. She makes good songs. Reputationâs my favorite album.âÂ
VI.Â
While your mom excused herself to answer a phone call, you find Heizou wandering in the living room and examining other picture frames displayed on the wallâpictures of your family, pictures of achievements, and pictures of treasured memories. You approach him with a cup of juice. âWhy am I not surprised youâre close with Mom now?â
He accepts the juice and whispers a tender thank you. âWell, Moms love me.â
âRight.â
He takes one sip. âBut itâs the truth.â
âRight.â
He grins again. âOh, come here, you.â Then hooks his finger under your collar, and pulls you closer.
VII.Â
As Heizou resumes with his investigation, you also cannot help it but also roam around the house. This house has gotten smaller.Â
Or maybe you have just gotten bigger?
You can pick up conversations from your mother and Heizou about the stolen jewelry, and as you get farther, it becomes more of a whisper.
You manage to arrive at your destination after climbing up the creaky wooden stairs. After inserting the key inside and twisting the doorknob, you slowly push the door open, revealing a small bedroom that contains flashbacks of cousins huddled around the floor to watch a crappy horror movie, sweaty friends from high school sharing the craziest gossip while munching on cheap Good Hunter takeouts, and stressful nights in college where coffee became your only company.
You step forwardâand suddenly, your mind is pushed back into the previous months.
VIII.
The stars finally aligned. Inside your favorite coffee shop waits two brilliant and beautiful ladies; Navia Caspar and Kuki Shinobu in the flesh. The sight of them had your heart swell from nostalgia, and sharing an embrace with them after so many years had healed something inside of you.
It was a well-deserved reunion, and you all deserved updates.
âFinally, you have a boyfie!â Navia smiled at Heizou sitting beside you, after you told them how the two of you finally became official. She let her chin rest between her fingers. âMy, our friend group will surely explode once we inform them of this.â
âTotally. Charlotte and Ayaka would pry for more details.â Shinobu crossed her arms. Though she wore a face mask, you knew that she was also just as happy as Navia was. âI remember how you used to talk about your âfuture boyfriendâ whenever you were stressed about finals.â
You raised your hands sheepishly. âOh, we donât need to dwell into thatââ
But Shinobu didnât seem to be listening. Instead, she looked at Heizou. âShe really waited for you for a long time, you know. There were a lot of complaints about your delay. She was always wondering whatâs taking you so long.â
Navia giggled, âAnd I quote â God, if this is the reason why I still donât have a boyfriend, then the wait better be worth it!â
You pouted at Navia. âHey now! Thatâs a bad impersonation of me!â
âBut my words were right! And I quote again, years later â God, I really want to kiss Heizouâs moles. A lot. And this was during her crushing stage on you.â
Your face heated up at that. âNavia!!âÂ
And as the girls chortled in glee because of your reactions ( âThis is supposed to be a sweet reunion, not a âteasing-me-reunion!â ), you failed to notice the burgundy-haired manâs gaze on you, with his arm perched on the desk to support the hand that was carrying the side of his face. His cheek rested on his palm, and he couldnât stop smiling. He murmured, âIs that so?â
( Later, when Heizou excused himself to the bathroom, the ladies informed you that your man had been staring at you so lovingly the whole day you told them about your major life updates. âSo anyway, I got promotedââ âHe was so fixated on you.â âWhat? Uh. Well, itâs because Iâm talking?â âNo, itâs because heâs smitten!â )
IX.
âThe archons had their own reasons why they didnât give you Heizou when you were in law school.â
âWhy? Because I was a red flag?â
âThat, and instead of studying civil code, you might study his body instead.â
You almost dropped your coffee. âCome on, Yanfei, not you, too!â
X.
Heizou heard a knock on the door of his office. Without looking up from his paper, he answered it with a âcome in.â
A familiar doushin appeared from the doorway, and mentioned a homemade lunch. Said doushin put it on his desk, and asked, âShe always takes a lot of effort to visit you, sir. But she always refrains from coming inside. Is she scared of criminals?â
âNo, sheâs not,â Heizou replied, still not removing his gaze away from the files. âShe just doesnât want to see me here.â
âWhy not?â
Heizou peeked at your homemade cooking. âFor safety measures.â He crossed his arms and looked at the puzzled doushin. âYou see, I have this bad habit of not letting go of my paramour.â
âSo were you guys the reason why Madam Kujou issued a ban on public displays of affection orâŚ?âÂ
XI.
Heizou spots you, inside your childhood bedroom, reading notebooks. You are sitting in one of the bean bag chairs, and you havenât addressed his presence yet. Heâs not sure if youâre completely ignoring him or if you just didnât notice him.
When he nudges your shoulder, you flinch a little - so there goes his answer. âOh. Hi. Did mom get another call again?â
âUnfortunately. Sheâs a busy woman, huh?â
âYeah.â
His eyes scour around. âHowâs this room? Nothing got stolen here?â
âNope, everythingâs all good in here,â You reveal to him. âMom had my room screwed shut after I moved out, so.â
âI see. And what are you reading?â He scans the ragged notebook in your hands, and leans closer. On the front cover, he catches your full name above the word SCIENCE. âMissing your high school days?â
âKind of,â You turn back to the pages. âI was just impressed by how wordy I can get with essays. Canât believe I was so passionate about climate changeâlook at this title: eat the rich? Come on.â
âYou still are, though,â Heizou points out in mirth, and pulls a bean bag chair closer to you. He sits on it and remembers an intoxicated you cursing out how unfair it was that the global south is taking all the blame for global warming. âMay I take a look?â
You puff your cheeks out, and Heizou resists to kiss you again. âThey suck, though.â
âPretty please?â
âFine.â You hand him your notebook, and Heizou happily studies it. Heizou can recognize how youâre a little worried again, with the way you are scratching your cheek and averting your gaze.Â
He stomps down on his resistance this time and pecks your templeâcreating a loud smack. This makes you glow a beautiful red again. âThank you.â
The quiet âŚyouâre welcome is worth hundreds of thousands of mora.
As he skims through the pages, his brain already works on keywords. The handwritten notes in the first few pages are all neat and organized, and the following are rushed and are overlapping lines. He can discern from this that the high school you were dedicated to making notes for environmental science in the beginning, but got too lazy in the middle and the end.
He bites his lips to prevent himself from grinning. Just check page 97-100 about ecosystems and biodiversity, is written in red.Â
And wow, you got good marks from your essays. Impressive. But heâs not surprised that you already have a lot to say at a young age. ( You do observe quite well, even if youâre quite dense sometimes. )
âAlso, I would like to apologize,â Heizou says, and closes your notebook. He clarifies when you hum questionably. âMy behavior, I mean. I donât mean to overstep any boundaries. I mightâve made you uncomfortable when I asked your mother about your younger years.â
Heâs genuine and sincere. The last thing he really wants is to make you uneasy with his own interrogations, especially at a place like this. Although the more he spends time inside your bedroom, the more his urge to scrutinize every nook and cranny intensifies. The room smells like you, and all the trinkets, clothing, posters, and letters that he has seen here â oh, he wants to drown himself in it.Â
Everything in here has a story to tell. There are lives that youâve lived when he wasnât still a major character in those plotlines, and he wants to know them all. What were you like back then? What shaped the wonderful and beautiful you of today?Â
No matter. Once he learns them all, heâll embrace and still love those versions of you.
( Based on the amount of pictures pinned on the corkboard, Heizou can deduce that you really love your friends. He can ascertain that some friends have stayed, some friends have gone. The friends who keep on making cameos are the ones that are truly loyal and have the fortunate blessing to have witnessed every growth of your character.
Mhm. Heâs doing it again.Â
So he shakes his head and focuses on you properly. )
âItâs fine.â You tell him.Â
âAre you sure?â
Itâs your turn to reach out to him, to do the reassuring, and to hold his hand. Automatically, his hand curls with yours. âYes. Itâs just. . . embarrassing. I had an embarrassing childhood.â
âBecause you were a troublemaker? Itâs not embarrassing to be young, eat dirt, and serve it to your parents, my sweet, summer sunshine.â
âHow did you evenâyou know what, Iâm not gonna ask. Itâs because of that photo in the living room, doesnât it?â
He smiles, very much endeared. âYes.â
You groan. âRight. Iâm gonna ask Mom to put that back down. Anyway, as I was saying, Iâm already used to this. Every time my friends come visit for the first time, theyâre always like this. Like Shinobu and Navia. Especially Navia! She saw one picture of me back in elementary school, and kept on asking for a copy.â
Oh. That intrigues him. âAnd what, pray tell, was that picture?âÂ
Your eyes drift away from him, and suddenly, your pillow is the most interesting thing in the world. âNothing too important.â
His intuition itches. âOh, but I think it is important.â
âReally. Itâs nothing.â
Again, his intuition begs to differ, and the fact that itâs supported by the sight of your reddening cheeks. But he decides to drop it, even though he really wants to know. âOkay then.â He turns to the left, and detects a piece of material on your bookshelves that piques his interest. âSo. . . does this mean I have your permission to look around?â
âYeah.â
XII.
âMan alive. The famous Journal Number 3 from Gravity Falls? And you say Iâm the nerd in the relationship.â
âBecause you are? And hey, it was just a phase! Gravity Falls was good, so.â
âIt is a classic. Hey, can I kiss you again? Iâm so attracted to you right now.â
XIII.
âThe famous mountain of plushies.â Heizou bows to the plethora of stuffed plushies meticulously arranged in your bed. âGreetings, I would like to introduce myself. The nameâs Shikanoin Heizou. Thank you for being there whenever she sleeps or whenever she cries.â
He stands up properly and smiles widely. âIâll be taking it from here.â Then, he turns to your astounded self. âSo, what are their names?â
XIV.
âSo, yeah. Thatâs pretty much what happened. We thought that she just wanted a casual night of drinking, but the sudden transaction for hard liquor shouldâve been the first warning sign.âÂ
Chevreuse said from the other line, her voice filling up the speakers of Heizouâs phone. It was currently 1 am in the morning, and inside Heizouâs apartment was an intoxicated you murmuring reclusion perpetua or objection every now and then.
You have your head laying on Heizouâs lap. You were in his living room, specifically your body was draped on his sofaâthe sofa that he rarely used because he was always out. While conversing with Chevreuse to recount what had happened earlier at the bar, he had his fingers stroking your hair.
âI see. Thanks, Chevreuse. I think thatâs all I need to know.â
âGotcha. Itâs a good thing she was with me or you know, it couldâve been a disaster.â
Heizou sighed, âI know.â
âAnyway, letâs end this. I still have to take care of some matters. On behalf of our friend group, Iâd like to thank you as well for taking care of our adorable, grumpy, and very stubborn friend.â
He nodded, even if Chevreuse couldnât see his face. âItâs no problem.â Then, with a playful smile, he sighed again. âAll this and yet she still doesnât notice.â
She guffawed, âRelax, loverboy. Give her time. I know how much love you have there in that big, big heart of yours, but trust me, youâll be able to flood her with that very soon.â
When the phone call ended, Heizou gently tossed his phone aside and returned to tend to you. He didnât stop running his fingers through your hair in a slow and steady motion, since he noticed how this soothed the very sleepy and drunk you.
âAiyaya, what would I do with you? You couldâve told me that you were stressed with work you know. Itâs your first year on the job. I understand how frustrating it can get at times, and Iâm always one call away.â He said, and recalled those times where youâd always send him a thumbs up whenever he asked how you were doing. Perfectly fine, youâd exclaim, even though his intuition doubted you.
He should have pressed further when he saw how your eyebags grew bigger and hair became messier. âYou didnât have to keep it all in.â
Of course, you didnât answer. It was still occasional law jargon and other random rambles he couldnât quite understand, so he just chuckled to himself. You were always, always, and always so endearing to him.Â
Then, you shifted. Heizou halted his movements for a bit, and then you turned to his side, giving him a full glimpse of your snoozing and flushed face.
And you were always, always, and always so beautiful. Even if you were a drunken mess on his lap.
Man alive. You have the Detective Shikanoin Heizou wrapped around your finger. How crazy is that? This could be an inciting incident of a romantic novel.
It was really unfortunate that despite having the talent to perceive, comprehend, and discern information in a short amount of time, your greatest weakness was sensing other peopleâs romantic feelings for you. Especially his. How could you not notice, really?
Or maybe you do, you were just not expressing it. ( Youâre also one tough puzzle to crack. )
Heizou was out in the field when he received that text message. Captain Kujou would definitely scold him if he was caught slacking on the job, but hey. It was worth it when you told him that you missed him. Even if they were keyboard smashes. Even if it seemed as if you were under the influence of alcohol.
Heizou resumed his caresses again.Â
He leaned closer to your snoring self. âI miss you, too.â
XV.
After doing a thorough investigation in your living room, Heizou plans to report this back at the precinct to make it official. You watch as he finishes his conversation with the forensics, before making his way to you. You usher him to follow you in the kitchen.
âSince the living room is a crime scene for now, I advise your mother to stay somewhere else first.â Heizou says in a professional tone, and you smile at him. âWhat?â
âItâs nothing, De-tec-tive,â you answer, and he crosses his arms when he realizes. âShe can stay in my apartment. She favors my loveseat, so sheâll have no qualms. I think she'll be busy with the new figurines Iâve bought for her. Yes, my mother wants and has many things. Sheâs a maximalist.â
âJust like my sweet, summer sunshine who also happens to have the tendency to collect.â He raises a brow, and his smirk makes its entrance again. âBut really now, PokĂŠmon?â
You flush a bright red. âYou got a problem with that?! Arcanineââ The biggest plushie you have in your bedâ âis the manager of my bedroom. Send him an official complaint if you have something to say.âÂ
As usual, Heizou will entertain your whims. âOh, I donât have any complaints. Instead, I might even send him a letter, since we did bond over our love for you. And also the fact that you are obsessed with chocolate chip cookies. Are you still obsessed with cookies?â
You challenge him by lifting your head. âTake a guess.â
Then, he puts his hand below his chin, pondering. âSince you always smell like freshly baked bread every Tuesday, Itâs safe to assume that you do.â Then, he flicks his fingers. âMaybe you go to the bakery near your apartment to purchase some, hm?â
Bingo. You put a hand on your forehead. âNote to self: you canât hide anything. From your detective boyfriend. At all.â
Heizou takes the hand from your forehead, and kisses it. âAnd I appreciate that.â He kisses your palm. âI trust you as much as you trust me.â
Then, he kisses that forehead of yours, and blood rushes in your heart, making it pound erratically. âSo I hope you donât have to hide anything from me.â
And finally, on the lips. âOkay?â
You feel like youâre about to short-circuit, but you respond anyway. ââŚOkay.â
âGood.â
He has his eyes closed when he smiles widely. âThough itâs still adorable how PokĂŠmon have been important in a significant time in your life. You wore a Pikachu onesie in your thesis defense?â
XVI.
On the way home, Heizou is still the passenger princess, so his role is to keep on talking and talking. And he also has full rights to your aux cord, even though you are the driver of the car.
So not only are you listening to Taylor Swiftâs Call It What You Want, but also to your boyfriendâs calming voice.
âThere was a long piece of paper peeking out from the drawer. I didnât get to see it properly. What was it?â
âAh, that? It was the bill of rights. I was so determined to memorize Article III of the Constitution to prove to my teacher that I can memorize them all.â You maneuver the wheel to the left, and the car moves to the left. âAnd that was even before I was a law student. I was such a competitive but also dumb high school kid.â
âOh? Did he not believe that you can?â
âNo, actually. He was one of my teachers who actually really believed in me. But he liked challenging me and was always yapping about not to âwaste my potential,â so.â
âYou memorized them all.â
âOf course,â You claim, and you fail to notice Heizouâs intense gaze. âIt took a lot of tears, but I did it. I wouldâve given up if only it werenât for Yanfeiâs tips and Shinobuâs lavender melons.â
And after a minute of dead air from your usually chatty man, you briefly glance at him in concern. âHeizouâŚ? You good?â
âSay, how would you react if I said that I really want to kiss you right now?â
Your heart skips a beat. âH-Heizou, again, Iâm drivingââ
âActually, mm, no. Letâs make out. Think you can stop the car?â
âHeizou, weâre on the highway?!â
âOh, I see a service area. Drive there.â
âHeizouââ
XVII.
âMy sweet, summer sunshine, are you even watching?â
Heizou asks, with you on his lap again. As the final episode of The Residence nears its end, you quickly cover your reddening face. âOf course I am.â Though your voice is muffled, Heizou understands you anyway. âWhat makes you think Iâm not?â
Heizou chuckles, and kisses that one spot on your neck he made yesterday. He takes pride in seeing the other marks and thinks that he should make more, since some of them are fading away.Â
âOh, I donât know â maybe my being admiring you is distracting you. Are you distracted, my sweet, summer sunshine?â
âN-no.â
âIs that so? But you are stammering. Sounds like you really are distracted. By your thoughts.â
You know where heâs leading with this. âYou donât have toââ
âMan alive, it appears that my beloved really is distracted! What to do? What to do? I know!â He cups both of your cheeks. âThoughts are about to be shut away in three, two, oneââ
Youâre just waving goodbye to Shinobu outside Komore Teahouse when Heizou walks up to you with an easy wave and a smile. He pulls you aside and asks in a hushed voice, âHey, can we talk for second?â You assent and follow him to a nearby bench, where you sit down beside him. Heizou glances towards you, then away. âSo⌠thereâs something Iâve been meaning to tell you. Because youâre important to me, Iâd like you to know about it.â
The tone of his voice makes you uneasy. Heâs not usually this serious. âUm, okay,â you reply, shifting in your place. âWhat is it?â
âSo⌠thereâs this person I like, right?â he says. âAnd Iâve liked them for a while, but itâs only recently that I realised exactly how much I like them.â
An anxious feeling begins to twist in your gut as he speaks, wringing your insides slowly over with doubt. You can assume what heâs getting at, but you want to confirm it nonetheless: âLikeâŚÂ like like?â
He looks downwards at his hands and a little smile flickers over his faceâthe bashful kind you donât see often on him. âYeah. Like like. A lot.â
It feels like the tip of your ribcage has been tapped, very lightly and very acutely, with a hammer. The cold sensation phases through you like the shiver of ripples on the surface of water, stirring and then settling again, but leaving behind a certain difference in your constitution meaning you are not quite the same as before. So he likes someone else. Itâs not that you didnât think something like this would never happen, but it just never really felt like a conversation you would actually have.Â
Well, itâs not that surprising, really. You never expected him to return your feelings, or whatever it is that you have going on, so itâs not too hard to quash your pang of disappointment. The best thing to do as his friend is support him with his own feelings. (Your heart is going like a rabbitâs.)
âOkay,â you say with a shrug and a perfectly unaffected air. âCool. Can I ask what theyâre like, out of interest?â
His expression brightens. âOh, theyâre wonderful,âHeizou gushes. âMore wonderful than they know. Funny, intelligent, selflessâŚâ
âSounds like a pretty solid person to have a crush on.â
âYou donât know the half of it,â he smiles, gazing at you with warmth in his eyes. Whoever this person is, his care for them is painfully obvious. It feels like a prank being played on you by the universeâbut, you remind yourself, it doesnât matter. He can like whoever he wants. Youâre here to listen and remain impartial, and support him where he needs it. Youâre not here to let your own bias undermine the trust heâs put in you by sharing his feelings.Â
âHow long have you known them for?â you ask, genuinely curious.Â
âSome years, now.âÂ
âAnd⌠would you say youâre, like, already close, or not really?â
âWeâre pretty close,â he says. An awkward silence drags on following his reply. You clear your throat.Â
âSo⌠is that all you wanted to say, orâŚ?â
Heizou sucks in a breath and speaks quickly. âActually, yes, there is something else. This person⌠as I mentioned, weâre already close. I want to ask them if theyâre willing to take the next step with me, but Iâm not sure how theyâll take it. I wouldnât want to ruin what we currently have.âHe turns his eyes to you. âSo, what do you say?â
His expression is expectant, but you have not the faintest clue what heâs hinting at. âAs in, you want my advice?â you say. âI mean⌠if you like them that much, then Iâd say give it a go. If they donât return your feelings, at least you can confirm it one way or another.â
To your surprise, Heizou chuckles. You wonder whether youâve said something wrong. You donât thinkyou did, but you also know youâre not the most attuned to this sort of thing, so itâs not impossible. âI thought this might happen, but it was worth a shot.â He sighs and kicks back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other. âAlright. Letâs try this again. Who do you think Iâm talking about?â
âUm.â You blink. âI dunno.â
âGive it your best guess.â
âUh⌠like, Kazuha, maybe?â He shakes his head. âShinobu?â
âNope.â
ââŚItto?â He looks at you as if to say, really? You laugh, a little sheepish, a little uncomfortable. âHeizou, I literally do not know who you are talking about.â
He reaches over and prods your forehead with his index finger. âI mean you, silly.â
The words donât quite strike you at first. You tilt your head to the side and furrow your eyebrows as you consider this new information. Then you frown. âOh.â
âOh,â he agrees.Â
You squint at him. âWait, seriously?â
âAs serious as I can be,â he smiles, looking both endeared and not a little amused.Â
Now it hits you. In shock, you splutter out, âYouâwhat? Actually? What? I never even thought you might⌠How did I not know this? How long have youâŚ?â
He shrugs. âLike I said, a few years now.â
âA fewâ!â You want to smack yourself. âArchons. I literally did not have any idea. Oh, my gods.â
Heizou laughs. âAdmittedly, I might have forgotten to mention that this person I like can be a littleââhe pinches his fingers togetherââoblivious sometimes.â
You bury your burning face in your palms. âGods. Iâm so sorry. Thatâs actually so embarrassing.â
With a chuckle, Heizou takes your hands and gently lifts them away from your face. The contact makes your heart go off like a rocket in your chest. âSo, now that weâre on the same page,â he says, giving you a pointed look in good humour, âwhat do you think that person will say?â
Youâre still on fire with embarrassment, but you just about manage to get your answer out. âI think theyâll say theyâd be happy to take the next step.â

a/n: another request from anon â thank you so so much for sending this in <3 this one kinda broke my heart a little⌠venven is just. so full of guilt. he carries so much and still chooses to live, and that kind of quiet strength makes me so emotional :â( soft angst + comfort in this one, with just a little bit of light at the end. i hope it feels like being held đŤ
the door creaks open with a soft whine.
you werenât expecting anyone this late â not even him.
but when you see himâŚ
your heart aches like it recognizes a familiar kind of breaking.
heâs soaked through with rain.
not from a storm, but from standing in one. like he never thought to move. like he wanted the cold to settle into his skin and stay there.
he doesnât say anything. doesnât look up. just hovers in your doorway, fingers curled into the ends of his cape, curls stuck to his cheeks, dripping. like heâs not sure if heâs supposed to be here. like heâs not sure he deserves to be.
and you donât ask questions.
you reach out. gently.
âcome in, venven.â
his breath catches. at the nickname. at your voice.
you swear, for a moment, you see his lip tremble.
he steps in.
slow. like it hurts to move. like heâs not sure the floor will hold his weight. like the wind might scatter him to dust if he exhales too hard.
and the first thing he does is reach for you.
barely. just a handful of your sleeve. but itâs enough to make your chest pull tight.
like heâs scared youâll disappear, too.
âi shouldnât have come,â he mumbles, voice small, raw.
âi didnât want you to see me like this.â
âlike what?â
he laughs. and itâs⌠not a real laugh. itâs hollow. like a cracked flute.
âlike myself.â
you donât push him to explain.
you just take his hand. quietly. and he lets you.
you lead him to your room â past the soft hum of the lamp, past the warmth curling from the blankets, past the version of him that smiles for everyone else. you grab your softest blanket from the bed â the one he gave you last winter. the one that smells like apples and wind and something that could be home.
you wrap it around him. gentle. slow. like youâre trying not to scare a bird out of flight.
he hesitates. of course he does.
like he thinks heâll ruin it just by being close. like he thinks heâll ruin you.
but you sit down first, pull him with you â and when his knees hit the bed, he folds like paper. into your arms. into the hush between your breaths. into the silence he never lets himself have.
he curls up against your chest, blanket and all, and hides his face in your shoulder.
it takes a minute before the shaking starts.
then two more before the tears come.
you let him cry.
you let him fall apart without fixing it.
because thatâs not what he needs. he just needs to be held.
to exist without a song in his throat.
to ache without an audience.
to breathe without pretending heâs not lonely.
eventually, between the quiet sounds of his sobbing, he whispers:
âdo you think⌠if you met me without the music, without the wind, without the archon name⌠would you still love me?â
his voice is quiet. raw. like itâs been buried under centuries of silence, and tonight was the only time he dared dig it up.
you blink. your arms instinctively tighten around him. just slightly. just enough to tell him he isnât floating away.
âyou think thatâs all you are?â
he swallows. doesnât answer.
he doesnât have to.
you already know the answer.
âeveryone loves the bard,â he says eventually, and you feel the tension coil tighter in his chest, like the words themselves are too heavy to carry. âthey love the voice. the songs. the way i make sadness sound beautiful.â
his breath stutters.
âbut no one wants the storm behind the song. the silence after the strings go still. the empty cathedral. the aching ribs.â
âno one wants the dead boy i wear like a disguise.â
his voice breaks â and this time he doesnât try to hide it.
ânot even me.â
your chest aches. it physically aches. not just for him â but with him.
you press your palm to his back, fingers splayed right over the place where a heartbeat used to be.
the one that stopped a long time ago.
the one that somehow still hurts.
and very quietly, like a promise:
âthen youâre stronger than anyone iâve ever met.â
he goes still.
so, so still.
like the words caught in his throat. like he doesnât know how to hold them.
âwhat?â
âyou lived,â you say, slow. steady. like the words have weight. âin his body. not because you had to. not because you forgot. but because you remembered.â
your hand moves gently through his damp curls, untangling them like youâre untangling grief itself.
âyou remembered everything. the pain. the past. the name no one calls him by anymore.â
your voice softens, like wind through open windows.
âand you still stayed.â
he shudders under your touch, his fingers curling tighter into your shirt.
âthatâs not weakness, venven,â you whisper. âthatâs freedom.â
he shakes his head, helpless.
âit doesnât feel like it,â he breathes. âit feels like⌠punishment.â
you hold him closer. like you could shield him from every century heâs ever had to carry alone.
âbecause itâs the kind that hurts,â you say. âthe kind no one writes poems about. the kind no one claps for.â
you pause. swallow.
âitâs the kind you choose. when it wouldâve been easier to let go. easier to disappear into the wind. easier to forget he ever existed.â
you tilt your head down, rest your forehead against his.
âbut you didnât. you chose to stay. to carry him with you. to keep singing anyway. even when it breaks you.â
he doesnât speak.
he just clings to you. quietly. desperately.
like youâre the only thing that still makes sense.
and then, after a long moment:
âyou really think itâs me you love?â
his voice is so small. so scared. like a child asking if heâs real.
you pull back just enough to meet his eyes.
and you see it all there.
the bard. the god. the boy. the grief.
and underneath it â a flicker of something soft and scared and still learning how to be loved.
âi love the one who showed up in the rain even though he thought he wasnât allowed to.â
your fingers brush his cheek, thumb catching the tear there.
âi love the one who asked if he was more than his songs.â
you lean in. kiss his forehead.
âi love the one who stayed.â
he breaks.
he falls into your arms like the wind finally gave up fighting the ground.
and you catch him.
you hold him tighter.
like the wind doesnât have to run tonight.
like itâs okay to land.
you let him cry again. not from loneliness this time â but from something heavier. something older. something thatâs been waiting in his chest since the day he decided to live in the place of a friend who couldnât.
you donât speak. just hold him.
you feel him soften. slowly. like something inside him finally stopped bracing for loss.
and eventually, he falls asleep on your chest.
breath syncing with yours. face tucked against your skin like heâs trying to memorize the feeling of being wanted.
his hands stay curled in your shirt like heâs still afraid youâll vanish.
you donât. you stay.
you let him listen to your heartbeat until he believes it.
because itâs still there.
still warm.
still alive.
and so is he.
a/n: i kind of fucking hate myself for writing this. i hate thinking about him being sad. but itâs also⌠real. this guy has been through so much. too much. and i think iâm gonna burst into tears actually
