“Laura” (Day 56/365) by Milmon F Harrison

Originally taken July 14, 2017 Main house of "Laura," a Creole sugar plantation. I didn't know this, but according to the tour guide, the Creoles (Native New Orleanians, as opposed to American "interlopers") painted their houses in bright colors, while “the Americans” painted theirs in stark white, which allowed the mildew to show more easily. The basement was straight ahead through the gate, on the ground floor, and the house was raised since it was built facing the levee holding back the Mississippi River. The house was built and maintained by slaves, and the tour points out various examples of their engineering intelligence despite not being formally educated. Posted: August 25, 2017
