If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

if you actually cared about your country, you would not be burning down houses and public facilities and blocking off all routes of transport. you are just racist and piggybacking off of a tragic, horrific incident as an excuse so that you don't have to acknowledge your true biases. it is pathetic and disgusting and does nothing to help the victims of crime
the same thing happened over those rapes a few months ago, in the name of protecting women and children. you do not care about women and children. this is the same population with one of the highest femicide rates in europe – the perpetrators of which are almost always white men – and yet you don't riot over that. you only riot when it gives you an excuse to profile entire racial groups and harm innocent people.
if you cared about the safety of women, that care would extend to women who are immigrants or refugees. but you would burn their house down without a second thought. it is vile racism thinly disguised as patriotism. hypocrisy and nothing more.
“I don’t like this expression “First World problems.” It is false and it is condescending. Yes, Nigerians struggle with floods or infant mortality. But these same Nigerians also deal with mundane and seemingly luxurious hassles. Connectivity issues on your BlackBerry, cost of car repair, how to sync your iPad, what brand of noodles to buy: Third World problems. All the silly stuff of life doesn’t disappear just because you’re black and live in a poorer country. People in the richer nations need a more robust sense of the lives being lived in the darker nations. Here’s a First World problem: the inability to see that others are as fully complex and as keen on technology and pleasure as you are.”
hey uh. google now saves images (I.E./including reverse image search), videos, audio (including voice recordings in search and translate. and "Search Live" but that's an AI thing.), and files you use to search and ALSO SCRAPES THEM to feed ai.
Double-check your privacy settings.
Yeah. Yiiiikes. They also moved some settings from Web and App Activity settings to uhm. I don't know I think it's to the new Search Services History settings where the media saving setting is.
[Transcript:] If your saved media is used to train our AI models, it is disconnected from your Google Account. This training data will be kept for up to 4 years, even if you delete the original activity. [End transcript. ]
Oh great I have no control over it haha that's great /sarc
Google also has this to say (from this article):
[Begin quote:] We take your privacy seriously and take steps to protect it when using your Search Services History data to train our AI models. For example, data is disconnected from your Google Account before it is used to train our AI models or reviewed by our trained service providers. We will seek your permission before sharing your media with these providers for human review as part of the model improvement process. We use filters designed to automatically remove a broad range of identifying info or sensitive personal information. We are constantly working to improve our filtering and safety systems to better protect your privacy. When Search Services History is off, your future activity won't be used to train Google’s generative AI models, unless you provide feedback. [End quote. ]
:/.
Thankfully, you can turn this off. Under the cut is a tutorial for doing this, as well as more (I'd say rather important) info about this media-saving feature. If I've missed anything (especially since the wording on Google makes it seem to me that this may be one of several new features), do feel free to add onto this!
Go to 'My Google Activity'.
Click 'Search Services History'
Once your click it, I think it should show you your history by default (the heading should say 'Search Services History'), but if you're in 'Search Services History Settings', click 'View and delete saved history'.
From there, look through the different sections and look for images, audio, videos, files, etc. If you find any, delete them. This feature seems pretty new (as of writing), and the article is from June 10, so I don't think you have to go TOO far back.
Google's article about Save Media says this:
[Begin quote:] Some activity, like AI Mode or Ask Maps threads, contain links to the product where you can view interactions that include media like file uploads. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] My Activity may display thumbnails of images or videos you've viewed on Search services. These thumbnails aren’t considered your media and so are not covered by your Save Media subsetting. [End quote. ]
After you're done deleting media, click the button that says 'Your Search Services History setting is off/on'.
If 'Save Media' is on, uncheck it. IIRC, it should be already off if you have search history off, otherwise it's on by default.
This will display some disclaimers. I recommend reading the disclaimers (including what's under the 'Learn More' which is pretty much a read more) if you're able to. It's where I found that thing about the training data being kept for up to 4 years.
Anyways, to turn off Save Media, scroll to the bottom of the disclaimers, and you should see the 'Turn off' button turn clickable. If you click it, you've now turned off Save Media! Woohoo!!!
Here's more info about how Save Media works (from this Google article again):
[Begin quote:] What your media includes
Your saved media includes your images, files, and audio and video recordings from your interactions with Search services. This includes things like Google Lens images, recordings from Search Live or Translate speaking practice, content you upload, and voice searches.
Saved media doesn’t include media that you generate or modify with AI. It also doesn’t include media you share publicly on Search services, like photos added to your reviews.
If your media is saved when the Save Media subsetting is on, it’ll be shown in your Search Services History. You may need to expand an activity event or click a link to the original thread in products like AI Mode or Ask Maps to see full details.
You can stop saving your media with your history at any time. If you stop saving media, your existing text-based history, transcripts, and generative AI media responses will continue to be saved to your Search Services History. Learn how to find and delete your Search Services History. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] When the Save Media subsetting is on
When the Save Media subsetting is on, Google can save media from your interactions to your Search Services History. Learn more about what your media includes.
If you use your device without an internet connection, media may be saved in your Google Account once you go online.
If you previously opted-in to donate your image search history to improve Google services with the help of human reviewers, image donation will continue. Learn more about image search history donation. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] When the Save Media subsetting is off
When the Save Media subsetting is off, Google won’t save media as part of your Search Services History. Media from your future interactions with Search services will still be used to respond to you and help keep Google safe, but will not be used to train Google’s generative AI models, unless you provide feedback.
When you turn off the Save Media subsetting:
This doesn’t turn off Search Services History, which can still save your activity on Google Search services. This includes text-based history, transcripts from voice interactions, and generative AI media responses.
Previously saved media that you do not delete can still be used to improve Google technologies.
You can delete previously saved media in your Search Services History at activity.google.com. Saved media that has already been selected to train AI models is no longer connected to your account and is kept for up to 4 years, even if you delete the original activity.
Tip: If you got your Google Account through your educational institution, Google does not use your Search Services History data, including your saved media, to train generative AI models. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] Other places media may be saved
This Save Media subsetting doesn’t affect media saved and managed by other Google services, like:
Gemini Apps
Google Voice
NotebookLM
YouTube
It also doesn’t include media that you post or share publicly on Search services, such as reviews.
Tip:
Media that you generate or modify with AI isn’t covered by your Save Media subsetting and is controlled by Search Services History. [End quote. ]
Here's more from the disclaimers. Some of it is a little redundant, but I thought it made things more specific:
[Begin quote:] Any media that you post publicly, including reviews, info, and any links that you share with others, is not included in this setting. This setting does not affect data that is not part of Search Services History, like data from other settings or features. For example, photos you upload as part of reviews in Google Maps and videos you create with other Google services, like YouTube, are not included. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] Text-based history, transcripts, and generative AI media responses from your interactions with Search services will still be retained and used if your Search Services History setting is on. [End quote. ]
[Begin quote:] This setting does not affect media saved by other settings, like Gemini Apps Activity, or media that you post or share publicly on Search services, including reviews. [End quote. ]

I hate when people consider me masculine because of my muscles (and the fact I enjoy lifting), because the vast majority of women throughout history were working class women who carried out manual labour. I still remember the size of my grandmother’s forearms back when she worked in the school kitchen - without the privilege of an electric mixer. Or the size of the women in paintings of Scottish fishing or farming communities. Or the descriptions of teenage girls expected to operate canal locks, pushing against the force of tonnes and tonnes of water.
The majority of women throughout history had to work manual, physical jobs, and had the body to match. If the majority of women throughout history had a physique you’d consider “masculine”, maybe you should re-consider your definition of “masculine”?
This is all 100% factually correct and accurate, of course, because sexual dimorphism in humans is vastly less drastic than you’ve likely been lead to believe and there is considerably more overlap between biosex male and female bodies than society wants to tell us - most of the differences are caused by differences in lifestyle, with girls being told from an early age to eat less and stay small and lean while boys are encouraged towards hearty meals and physical activity to build muscle, for example - but at the same time, this is an example of the habits of the rich being inherited by the general public over time.
Like sugar, wedding dresses and basic literacy, the luxury of a skinny, petite physique, unmarred by the rigours of physical labour, the kind of work that peasants do because they have to, is something that people aspired to centuries ago. Like elaborate clothes and long hair and nails, it was a sign that you had other people to do that work for you and that you were wealthy enough to do nothing all day. That we still enforce this as a standard of beauty for women is a whole Thing, an outdated kind of performative impracticality.
Anyway, muscles look good on everyone imho. What’s considered to be “masculine” or “feminine” changes by social class and time period because it’s all made up and fake! Do what you want, it’s your body that you have to live in, so you get to decide what should look like. 💜
i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.
Yes yes I know that Ash is clearly Red and Gary is clearly Green (M) but like…
I don't know man. I'm a sucker for AU's where Gary and Ash coexist with Green and Red so sue me.
And you cannot tell me Ash is like Pokespe Red because Yellow is RIGHT THERE.
With the friendship is magic imma level you up to 80 from pure love alone because I believe in you.
AND THEN THERE’S THE AURA SHIT. YELLOW IS BASICALLY A PSYCHIC AURA WIELDING POKEDEX HOLDER OF THE VIRIDIAN FOREST. LIKE ASH'S AURA GUARDIAN LUCARIO SHIT PLUS THE EMOTIONAL BULLSHIT OF GRENINJA'S BOND PHENOMENON.
AND SHE HAS A GODDAMN PIKACHU.
IT SAYS ASH ALL OVER IT YALL. AND YELLOW'S SECOND CATCH IS QUITE LITERALLY CATTERPIE LIKE ASH.
Plus Ash's first cross dress disguise had him have YELLOW HAIR.
And Blue (F). Don't get me fucking started. It’s more of a headcanon more than anything because I made Gary a lot more mischievous then the usual must-be-better-than-rival schtique.
Besides, with Ash's other regional rivals, it does feel as though Gary is the third wheel if he were to be on screen with Ash's other rivals. Since the main rival wouldn't be Gary anymore. Like if Ash, Paul, and Gary were to be put in the same room, Paul would be Green (M), technically Ash would be Red alongside being Yellow, then who's Gary?
FUCKING BLUE. HE MOCKS PEOPLE LIKE HER TOO C'MON.
Blue (F) is a clever lady with thief-like tendencies and can con people by baiting and tricking them into handing her their shit. Gary is a smug little fucker that goads people into making mistakes by mocking them in the most extra way possible with a convertible with cheerleaders to get them to improve and challenge him like a little shit.
Menaces. The two of them.
And since I sorta gave Gary a Ditto for reasons and Blue already has a Blastoise I said okay, why not?
I will say that Blue is a lot more lighthearted than Gary and Gary is a bit more of an edgelord with tricking people. Not in a sense that Gary has been through more shit, because Blue's backstory is a LOT, but in a sense he plays a dark rival persona in contrast to Blue's innocent girl please help me persona so Gary plays the part to be overestimated and intimidating while Blue plays the part of being underestimated and approachable.
Plus Gary would look sick as fuck in an all black dress. I made it his disguise with his Ditto.
And Blue and Gary are opposites in a sense where Blue was raised outside the system without anything to stand on while Gary is born in the system with prestige with a shit ton of expectations.
But both are Evolvers and Rivals in a sense they strive to improve.
Just in VERY different directions. And reasons.
So is Ash and Yellow.
Yellow heals pokemon through connection while Ash believes in pokemon through connection.
Yellow is technically based on Ash. It isn't a coincidence that they line up so well.
Each arc is loosely based on a game, with Yellow being very loosely based on Pokemon Yellow. While the plot itself is original, they still clearly took bits from it such as surfing Pikachu and being able to see Pikachu's emotions on the Pokedex.
The Yellow video game was based on the anime, as the anime had gotten so big. It added a lot of Pikachu gimmicks (Pikachu being your starter, the following Pikachu, reading it's emotion, surfing Pikachu) to match Ash and his Pikachu as well as some other details such as changing some of the grunts to be Jessie and James.
Red had already gone through his journey in the RBG arc, so they made Yellow to fill the protagonist role in the Yellow arc.
Also, Game!Red's default name in the Yellow video game is literally "Ash."
In making a protagonist for the Yellow arc, which is based on the Yellow video game, which is based on the anime, they are making someone who is at least partially based on Ash.
It wouldn't surprise me if Yellow's first Pokemon she caught on her own being Caterpie was a reference to Ash.
Also, another similarity not previously mentioned, both love sharing their full names + town names. Ash tells so many people he is "Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town" and Yellow yells to the worst possible people (the person hunting her down and not her newfound allies) that her name is "Amarillo Del Bosque Verde"/"Yellow of the Viridian Forest" (depending on the translation).
since there is such an "english speakers who don't even try to pronounce a foreign mame correctly" epidemic, native english speakers often try to overcorrect and end up thinking they have a moral imperative to pronounce every foreign name correctly at all times. so i'm gonna hold your hand and look into your eyss as i say this: you can't. you can't pronounce every sound in a language you don't speak. and that's fine. it happens to the rest of us too. we won't be mad so long as you try your best.

In honor of us working toward our next stretch goal, an original FLY theme song, I wanted to share the playlist that helped shape the story while I was developing it.
A lot of these songs became part of FLY’s DNA. They helped me find the story and the feeling of freedom at the heart of Eli’s journey.
Any theories about which songs inspired certain moments?
A coming of age story about Black kids who finally have power to fight back against systems designed against them.
