Lewis Hamilton may not need a dramatic move into a braking zone to gain positions at Marina Bay. Ferrari could create his most important overtake through pit timing instead.

Singapore remains a circuit where track position carries enormous value, so getting Hamilton onto fresh tyres one lap before a rival can completely change the order. Ferrari knows the power of that move. In 2019, Sebastian Vettel’s early stop allowed him to jump Charles Leclerc and ultimately win the race. For Hamilton in 2026, the same principle depends on much more than simply calling “box” first.

Ferrari must identify the tyre crossover, make sure Hamilton has clean air waiting after the stop and trust him to produce a strong in-lap and controlled out-lap. Fresh tyres are useless if he rejoins behind slower traffic or cannot bring them into their working window quickly enough. His Barcelona victory this season also showed that Ferrari can succeed when it uses tyre strategy proactively.

The start of the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix will begin before Formula 1’s familiar red lights even illuminate. Drivers now receive a five-second blue-light phase to raise engine revs and prepare the turbo following the removal of the MGU-H. That adds another task to an already intense Marina Bay launch.

Drivers must manage throttle, clutch feel, rear-tire temperature and turbo response while sitting inches from rivals, then accelerate toward a braking point only 178 meters from pole position. There is almost no time to recover from wheelspin or a sluggish getaway. Singapore’s first Sprint weekend makes the challenge even more interesting because teams will get two competitive starts.

Saturday can provide valuable real-world information about clutch settings, grip levels and tyre preparation, but track evolution means Sunday will never be an exact repeat. The opening corners also punish excessive aggression. Winning half a car length means little if the driver reaches Turn 1 without enough control to use it.

The fastest Formula 1 car in Singapore could still be compromised before its flying lap properly begins. Marina Bay’s first Sprint weekend gives teams only one practice session before competitive running, leaving very little time to understand how the narrower 2026 tyres respond under the floodlights. Too little preparation and the front axle may refuse to bite into the first braking zone. Push too hard, however, and surface temperatures can rise before the tyre reaches a stable working window.

Around a street circuit lined by concrete, either mistake can be costly. The challenge extends far beyond qualifying. A successful undercut depends on getting fresh rubber working almost immediately after leaving the pits, while a Safety Car restart can leave the entire field fighting to recover temperature before racing resumes. Traffic on preparation laps adds another complication, because slowing at the wrong moment can undo an entire tire-heating routine.

Lando Norris may have the pace to fight near the front in Azerbaijan, but Baku has a habit of making speed secondary to timing. A crash, yellow flag or Safety Car can wipe out a carefully built advantage and suddenly make a pit stop far cheaper.

That is why McLaren needs a flexible plan for Norris rather than one predetermined strategy. His difficult 2025 Baku race showed what can happen when a fast car gets trapped in traffic, while his 2026 victory in Hungary demonstrated the opposite. Give Norris clean air, and the McLaren can become dramatically more effective. At Baku, the pit wall will need to judge whether to stop during a neutralisation, stay out to protect track position, split strategies with Oscar Piastri, or react to moves from Mercedes and Red Bull.

Baku may be one of the most revealing tests yet for Formula 1’s new generation of cars. The 2026 regulations were designed partly to make following easier, but the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will push that promise to its limit.

Drivers can gain huge speed in the slipstream along Baku’s waterfront, only to arrive at Turn 1 with cooler front tyres and disturbed airflow reducing the grip they need most. Active aerodynamics and Overtake Mode should create more attacking opportunities, yet staying too close through the technical sections could still damage a driver’s ability to brake and rotate the car.

Few current Formula 1 drivers have looked as naturally suited to Baku qualifying as Charles Leclerc. Four consecutive Azerbaijan Grand Prix poles from 2021 through 2024 turned the Ferrari driver into the circuit’s Saturday specialist, yet none became a race victory.

That contrast is exactly why Ferrari’s 2026 Azerbaijan strategy matters so much. Leclerc can attack the Castle Section with extraordinary confidence, but Ferrari needs a setup that remains competitive for 51 laps rather than one spectacular Q3 attempt. More downforce helps through Baku’s technical corners but adds drag along the enormous waterfront straight.

Less wing improves straight-line speed but can take away the sharp front-end response Leclerc relies on. Then come tyre temperatures, electrical deployment, traffic, pit timing and the possibility of a Safety Car changing everything. With Leclerc chasing both championship rivals and his own teammate Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari cannot afford another weekend defined by what might have been. Baku has already proved Leclerc can produce the lap.

The real challenge is finally converting that Saturday brilliance into a complete Sunday.

Kimi Antonelli already knows what happens when raw speed meets impatience at Marina Bay. During the 2025 Singapore weekend, the Mercedes rookie showed front-running pace but admitted that he pushed too hard when the pressure increased in Q3. He eventually qualified fourth while teammate George Russell took pole, before recovering to finish fifth in the race.

That experience gives Antonelli an important reference point for his next Singapore challenge. Marina Bay demands confidence through changing corner speeds, bumps and braking zones where the car must remain predictable as the walls close in. High-speed balance is not simply about carrying more speed. Antonelli needs a Mercedes that lets him attack without forcing corrections that disturb the tyres or compromise the next corner.

The biggest improvement may come from restraint. He already demonstrated in 2025 that he could match the pace around a circuit he had never raced in Formula 1 before. The next step is turning that speed into a complete weekend where aggression remains controlled when the stakes become highest.

Oscar Piastri does not need to reinvent his driving at Marina Bay. He needs to find a few tenths in exactly the right places. In 2025, Piastri qualified third in Singapore with a 1:29.524, just 0.366 seconds behind George Russell’s pole time.

That gap sounds significant until it is divided across an entire street-circuit lap. A cleaner brake release at Turn 7, earlier rotation into Turn 13 and a more settled sequence through Turns 10 and 11 could begin to erase it. Singapore’s first Sprint weekend adds even more pressure because McLaren will have much less practice time to refine the car before competitive sessions begin. Piastri therefore needs confidence in the MCL40 almost immediately.

The most important lesson may be that braking later is not always faster. Releasing the brake slightly earlier can help the car rotate, protect the front tyres and open the throttle sooner. At Marina Bay, a handful of hundredths scattered across the lap can quickly become the difference between the second row and pole position.

The undercut sounds simple in Formula 1: pit before the car ahead, use fresher tyres and gain enough lap time to jump them when they stop. Baku makes that equation much less comfortable.

For George Russell, the crucial moment may come immediately after leaving the pits, when fresh tyres are technically quicker, but the front axle is still searching for temperature. Attack too aggressively and the tyres can slide before they are ready. Be too cautious, and the entire undercut advantage disappears. That makes Russell’s Baku strategy a contest between timing, tyre preparation, traffic and confidence. Mercedes cannot simply identify when an opponent’s tyres begin to fade.

It has to predict where Russell will rejoin, whether he will have clean air and how quickly the new rubber will come alive. At a circuit where track position can completely reshape the race, one perfectly timed stop could move Russell forward without requiring an overtake on track. One lap too early or too late could do the opposite.

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, speed is only half the problem. The other half arrives when a driver has to slow an F1 car from enormous velocity with concrete walls waiting nearby.

Baku’s unusual layout makes brake management especially important because drivers repeatedly move from long flat-out sections into heavy stopping zones, while the technical middle sector gives the brakes little room for mistakes. In 2026, there is another layer to the challenge: braking also feeds the car’s electrical energy strategy. Harvest efficiently, and a driver can have more power available when the next attack begins. Push the system too hard, and temperature, tyre grip and confidence can all disappear at once.

With Kimi Antonelli setting the championship pace and Lewis Hamilton trying to close the gap, tiny gains under braking could have consequences far beyond one corner. Baku has always rewarded bravery, but this year the smartest driver may be the one who understands exactly when not to use all of it.

The athletes have already shown the sport can exist. Now it needs consistent international competition, clear rules and a genuine pathway to major medals.

Baku tempts Formula 1 teams with one obvious idea: remove drag and chase speed down one of the longest full-throttle sections on the calendar.

For Pierre Gasly and Alpine, that solution is only useful if the car remains trustworthy everywhere else. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix combines huge straight-line speeds with heavy braking zones, rapid direction changes and walls that leave almost no margin when the balance suddenly disappears. Gasly therefore needs an Alpine that stays settled as the aerodynamic load changes, particularly when he commits to the faster sections and then asks the car to slow and rotate immediately afterwards. Too much rear instability can force him to lift or make corrections that destroy lap time. Too much downforce, meanwhile, can leave Alpine exposed on the straight.

Baku’s elevation changes and narrow Old City section add another layer, requiring a driver to be precise rather than simply aggressive. Gasly has spoken positively about the circuit in the past, but enjoying Baku and extracting everything from it are different challenges.

For Alpine, the goal is not to build the fastest car at one point of the lap. It is to give Gasly confidence everywhere that matters.
