MicroTig welding. We are really really far from being proficient so using this method for restorations is in the R&D phase. There a good chance it might never be viable but I think it shows promise. For now its just practice practice practice at the home shop in the garage. The unit I’m working with in the Pro-Fusion dual arc unit. I’m really surprised that we still have this Submariner available for sale. When taking in this piece for consignment, I saw a fantastic starting place for anyone looking a piece with the intention of restoring. This could also be a lesson/guide of what attributes to look for when purchasing a watch with the intention of restoring. Here is what I saw: Ph 1 &2: Nice long lugs (with good width) that extend well beyond the end pieces. I like viewing this from the bottom as the top angle can deceive the eye Ph 3: Nice thick crown guards that reach well into the winding crown Ph 4-6: Looking at the lug holes as a reference, nice long lugs that extend well beyond the lug holes. Things like nicks and abrasions are simple to fill and repair by adding new steel. Thin or short lugs and crown guards are much much more laborious to repair and very costly. Having good beef in the lugs and crown guards is a great starting point. Also take a good look at the dial and hands in good natural light and under UV. Do the right thing. It takes nerves of these to remove these Daytona bezels. It’s not hard but one has to be really really careful. Unlike other ceramic models there isnt the steel outer ring to protect the insert. Pressing it back on takes a bit of concentration also. They can crack quite easily when done improperly. 😖 The only bezel that makes me more nervous are the brown PM daytona inserts. 😖😖😖. Here’s are some shots of @boley.de press die set in action. We use this for models with the titanium retainer ring. We use this die set to fit the ring onto the crystal beforehand. The crystal assemble is then held onto the too die using a magnet. The notch on the top die allows us to align the cyclops to the case tube. The Boley die doesnt fully press the ring so We use the 31mm Bergeon die for the final press. As you can see the cyclops is spot on. 1950s Beads of Rice Jubilee! The grandfather top Jubilee styles that have come after. Notice the straight bar attachment for the spring bars. This pre-dates the end pieces. From the side looks a lot like the Folded Jubilee but the rounded loops remind me of the USA oval jubilees. 🤓 Do the right thing. It’s fallout (waste material) from parts working to destroy one another when not properly clean and lubricated. All the dust and debris is material and surface area that is lost by parts as they grind. Compare the teeth on the reverse wheels (maroon wheels) from top photo and bottom photo. Look different? The cleaner movement has wheels that are more full with teeth that are properly shaped. We expect to see similar wear and damage throughout the movement. 😔 Do the right thing.
