New Kate Nash EP tomorrow! It's her girl riot punk band...this shit is wild and vicious and fucking cool. Her own solo singer/songwriter EP comes out in March...stoked.
News...
Over the last couple of months I've been asked quite a bit about Side by Side. "What are you guys doing?" "When's the next record?" "Are you playing in my area?" amongst other inquiries. I want to shed some light on what's been going on with Side by Side since the Fall time and what's next for us. I figured taking to here is the best spot.
Things have changed in the SBS world. As a matter of fact behind closed doors things have been changing for the last 6 months. The fact is Side by Side is now currently back to Joey and I. We are no longer with Joelle. This may come to a shock to most and I wish it came as a shock to me. Things change, we all evolve, life is crazy; it happens. I could sit here and make this blog post about all the shit that led to this decision but instead I want to outline the future.
The most immediate fact I want everyone to take away from this (if you take nothing else away from this blog post) is that Joey and I's art and songs are VERY much alive and we're holding open auditions for all female AND male vocalists/songwriters dedicated to being in SBS - a full time touring, writing and recording act. We have dozens upon dozens of songs waiting in the wings for you all to hear and we couldn't be more excited to get on a stage and show them to you; and get them on a disc, vinyl or download so you can spin them whenever for whomever wherever. The songs are on a whole new level; I can't describe how thrilled we are with them and how our sound is evolving.
Is this a set back; having to drop our lead singer? Surely. Will it dent how quickly the above happens? Probably. But only for the time being. Life is filled with setbacks. This is our passion; it's quite honestly what defines us as human beings and so the only thing to do is to say 'what's next?'
I started Side by Side when I was 18 years old in my bedroom with an acoustic guitar and an 8 track recorder. A really ugly red one that Fostex used to make (the MR-8 for all you gear heads wondering. I'll save you the googling). At the time Joey and I were in a failing punk band we'd been playing in since the ripe age of 13 and I started to channel my art anyway I knew how. So I started Side by Side. I wrote a bunch of songs and played at coffee houses around town for whoever would listen (not many). My point is some of you knew me then, some of you knew me and us only during the past 3 years while we've had some outstanding commercial success and some of you will know me/us going forward; but the fact remains music is what I've always done. It's what we've always done and what we'll continue to do for as long as our bodies allow us to stay on this Earth. As I write this I'm in my home studio at 1am finishing up another demo to hand off to Patrick (our producer) to review. We continue to get deeper and deeper into the process and more excited. I can't express how deeply excited we are to share our future art with you.
So, the search has already begun for the new version of Side by Side. The new line-up you will soon be seeing in a city near you and soon be spinning new songs from. Keep your eyes and ears peeled we have some outstanding things for you all. I wish I could promise when it will all come to light; but I can't. What I do promise is it'll be sooner than you think and when it does come to light it'll be perfect.
I'd like to lastly take a moment to thank every single person involved in the past 3 years of Side by Side. All the fans, all the bands we played with (whom we look forward to playing with again!), Billboard Magazine, Kings of A&R, Bunim/Murray, Patrick Boyd and Sioux Sioux (in case you can't tell the dude is a 'ghost band member' of this whole thing folks), all the radical dudes who bashed the shit out of the drums for us: Mike S, Aleks and Geoff you all brought something special to the table. Every rest stop, every person who let us party with them, fed us beers, gave us a place to crash, bought our records (or downloaded them) and every person who even for a moment gave SBS a chance, we thank you and we look forward to doing it ALL over again very soon. So for a moment can we all toast: the future.

Lydia - Best Nights
Well I gotta say this one time So she feels it And if you run back up that coast Well I guess then I’ll believe it But run, run Spit those words with your tongue Shout them back at the sun And I know you too well Too well, for this shit On my way home Still wishing I was Inside your bedroom Just talking shit for the hell of it Yeah all the best nights So hurry up, hurry up Goddamn this just feels right Yeah it kind of feels like It was never the same Like we claimed it And if you gotta go, then go I couldn’t change it Well I never would have wished on this girl To be out my world And I know you too well Too well, for this shit On my way home Still wishing I was Inside your bedroom Just talking shit for the hell of it Yeah all the best nights So hurry up, hurry up Goddamn this just feels right Yeah it kind of feels like One mistake I would never change I want it all now, want it my way ‘Cause she knows how I work How I run, my insides ‘Cause I will second guess Everything about me You’re the only one that could see How fucking crazy I was starting to be Yeah so pull me right back down, lady On my way home Still wishing I was Inside your bedroom Just talking shit for the hell of it Yeah all the best nights So hurry up, hurry up Goddamn this just feels right Yeah it kind of feels like
The Invitation
Oriah Mountain Dreamer Canadian Teacher and Author It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love for your dreams for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon… I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful be realistic to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes.”
It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
Changing music trends
I noticed something this week while listening to new singles by some of my favorite major label artists that leads me to believe there's a trend change going on with established acts. Let me outline what I've seen this week
Green Day new single Oh Love - 5:05 mins.
No Doubt new single Settle Down - 6:00 mins.
A Fine Frenzy new single Now Is The Start - 4:43 mins.
These singles aren't at all what a 'single' length is considered yet each of these established artists this week have chosen to release them as the first impression of their soon to be full length albums. I don't think established artists are concerned with radio play anymore. Given, there will be radio EDITS of these singles but that's all they'll be; an edit so radio CAN play them. They've chosen to release their art as they see fit in their own means.
Green Day released their single via a 3D Youtube lyrics video. They WANT their fans to log onto Youtube, learn the words and interact with a 3D video. No longer are they worried about breaking their single on KROQ or other rock stations. That'll come later; they want the fans to be their mouth piece virally.
No Doubt premiered their new video on E! at 8PM but really the song appeared on their website and Youtube that morning. Again, putting the promotion in online blogs and fans.
A Fine Frenzy went a little more traditional route of releasing the single on iTunes; yet still no letterhead from her company with an announcement, no big release promotion. Simple tweets and Facebook posts by her and her label. After all she has 500,000+ followers on all outlets. What promotion do you know that's going to simataneously make that many people aware?
None of this is 'news'. Social outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube have been the top choice on breaking new and established bands. What I find interesting is it's no longer the 'trend' but now simply 'how it's done'. In turn these established artists no longer seem concerned with getting into that magic radio play time of 3:15-4 minutes. They simply are releasing the art and song they feel most strongly about and they feel their fans will respond to the most. Green Day's Youtube video will get more re-tweets, re-blogs and re-posts than any radio station could ever spin in a day. Hell, than ALL the radio stations in the entire country could spin in a day.
The labels are really behind picking these singles so it's even more interesting to think that Virgin, Capitol, Sony, etc. are less concerned with releasing the most radio playable option but what they feel is going to get the most hits on Youtube.
It's a complicated marketplace though. For established artists such as Green Day, No Doubt and A Fine Frenzy who have all sold millions of records around the globe they no longer need radio play immediately. For smaller independent bands radio is still a completely viable and legit way to break a band. So we have this divide of bands who WANT to be Green Day having to condense their art into a 3:30 min pop single for radio and who have the ACTUAL Green Day who's setting a trend of 'fuck 3:30 mins this our art'. So, where do we land folks?
Marc Geiger of WME (among a credit list the size of DMX's police offenses) says you can break a band simply from a positive Pitchfork review. If anyone knows it's him. We all know Pitchfork could give a shit about radio playability. So is it in new artists best interest to follow this trend being set by established artists? Fuck the radio rules, break me on Pitchfork, Absolutepunk.net, NPR online, SPIN.com, Youtube or even XM radio where Clear Channel rules don't even apply. It seems based on this weeks releases we're headed there.
Coming from personal experience there is nothing like hearing your song on THE radio for the first time. It's exciting, exhilarating, and all sorts of other great emotions. I can't help but feel in 10 years it won't matter though. I can't say I don't get the same rush seeing someone re-tweet our Soundcloud link, or seeing a review on a major blog for thousands to see. More of that is happening and it's becoming more important to make music digestible and not necessarily 3:30 minutes. That's the thing about all 3 of the singles I've used as examples; they're ALL very digestible. They leave you wanting more and anticipating the full length record. Whether it's 6 minutes or 3:30 minutes is becoming a moot point. Does it make people re-blog, re-share, re-tweet and re-watch? If it's a yes, you've already won.
This dude is a genius in the entertainment/music biz. Marc Geiger. Watching an hour with him is on a whole other level.
I couldn't stop laughing at this video.

Truth.
Everyone Will Die
Everyone will die
and everyone will lose,
so what ya gonna do
with the moments you have before it's you?
It doesn't mean goodbye.
It's just a simple truth,
the shedding of a lifetime of layers
that once embodied you.
Like Winter into Spring
and Summer into Fall
A cycle of intense introspection before the curtain call
Cause everyone must die
and everyone must lose
so who ya gonna love in the meantime before it catches you?
Everyone will die.
Everyone will lose.
It doesn't mean goodbye.
It's just a simple truth.
Every single smile
and every single tear,
reminders of the moments we shared
in the instant we are here.
If everyone will die
and everyone will lose
then who you gonna love in the meantime before it catches you?
Holy shit...I love Kate Nash. Bravo for the throwback to real punk music. The kinda shit I grew up on...Sex Pistols, The Ramones, etc.
NME said it right: Career suicide and it sounds amazing.
Back in 2003 Blink-182 (one of my favorite bands) collaborated with Robert Smith of The Cure (my all time favorite band and Robert my overall muse) so as you can imagine the song which is entitled All of This is in my personal top songs, ever.
Blink to my knowledge has only played All of This one time live which was in the UK with Robert Smith present on their 2004 tour. The other night they played it acoustically on their UK tour. No Robert Smith but hot damn if it wasn't a throwback, great performance of an incredible song. Check it. Enjoy it.
