“Preliminary data shows that in some U.S. states, 99.5% of COVID-19 deaths in the past few months were among people who weren’t vaccinated, the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, said Thursday at the White House. “We know that the delta variant … is currently surging in pockets of the country with low vaccination rates,” Walensky said. “We also know that our authorized vaccines prevent severe disease, hospitalization and death from the delta variant.””

As the Oscars usually do, this shook out on mostly predictable lines. I’m happy to see Arrival and Hidden Figures among the Best Picture nominees, Ruth Negga for best actress, and three black actresses in the supporting actress field. Could do without Mel Gibson’s directing nomination and Jackie’s score nomination (which was the worst part of the movie imo). I don’t think Lin-Manuel is going to get that EGOT for “How Far I’ll Go” but there is a chance the two ‘La La Land’ songs could cancel each other out. Oscar-nominated Passengers is a thing I guess. La La Land notched 14 total, tying Titanic’s record; it will probably still dominate.

On a weekday morning in January, business is steady at Northwest Armory, a gun store on an Oregon state highway just south of Portland.

Customers lean over glass cases to look at handguns or run their fingers along the polished wood of hunting rifles that line the aisles, aimed at the ceiling. AR-15s hang on hooks and ammunition boxes are stacked up behind a sales clerk, who leans over to talk to an older couple.

Oregon has a lot of gun owners. There are hunters and target shooters, ranchers who carry guns to guard their livestock against predators, and collectors. And a lot of men and women in Oregon carry guns to protect themselves.

From time to time, they all find themselves in a place like the Northwest Armory. They might be more inclined to visit after announcements like President Obama’s executive order earlier this week.

The Promise of Oregon from Blue Chalk on Vimeo.

The Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) hired Blue Chalk to create a statewide campaign to encourage a groundswell of support for investing in public education. The campaign required both creative strategy and new digital tools to grow their reach online.

"The Promise of Oregon" campaign features nearly 200 portraits of Oregon's young people, "Promise Kids," who will define the direction of the state as the next generation's leaders. The campaign highlights one “Promise Kid” each school day of the campaign on the homepage of the website, and across social media.

Blue Chalk traveled througout Oregon to create a diverse array of portraits, a video trailer for the campaign, an anthem video and three individual video portraits of students (released in 2015). The team created a video portrait of campaign celebrity sponsor, Nicholas Kristof.

The digital effort included branding, a robust WordPress site, and a digital strategy for building and growing the campaign on social media and email. In addition to creative work, Blue Chalk provided new tools and training to the OSBA communications team.

Blue Chalk worked with The Enthusiast Network and Subaru to tell a story about Will Brady and his family who live on the Southern Oregon coast. This landscape is both beautiful and isolated. Brady calls it, “a wind magnet.”

The Brady family has built their life around the wind. They own a kiteboarding school and a bed & breakfast on Floras Lake. Brady is a long time surfer and water sport enthusiast – a passion that his sons Reed and Josh have inherited.

This short brand spot tells the story of how the family celebrates the natural environment they live in, navigating both on and off-road paths in their Subaru Outback.
