But it got me thinking about how I've heard people say "the 2020s has no aesthetic", but I think the liminal spaces/the backrooms is the aesthetic of the 2020s.

The concept of this was made in 2019, then the pandemic hit and nostalgia really started taking over. Whether it's the 80s, the 90s, the early 2000s or some other decade, we all are longing for a time that seemed simpler.

However, I think we forget that the reality of those times were still difficult. There was war, injustice, societal pressure, and so much that we kept ourselves distracted from with pop culture from those times (like we do now). I know in my experience, the early 2000s were difficult in ways for me. But I cloud my memory of those hardships because remembering Saturday morning cartoons is easier than remembering the trauma that occurred in the same room I watched them in.

Liminal spaces are representative of the nostalgic hopefulness we felt, accompanied by the raw reality that came with it. It's like rewatching an old movie you loved as a kid, but now doesn't feel quite the same. Somewhere between that nostalgia and the reality is you, in limbo, wondering where that feeling went and if it was ever really there.
