Hello! I love you art and am always floored by your patience with answers!<3 I was wondering if you could find a few minutes to give your opinion on sth that's bugging me: I'm considering applying to small publishing houses to work on book covers but I'm ony a self taught medium level artist (at best), and my only portfolio are fanarts. Do you think it's worth trying, or should I wait until I get better? I know some published covers are meh, but I'm still scared I'm aiming too high.
Hi anon!
Thanks a lot for your message! ♥
I’m ony a self taught medium level artist (at best), and my only portfolio are fanarts.
First, a lot of companies that look for artists to draw their book covers couldn’t care less about the fact that you are self-taught. What matters for them is
your skills and the kind of work you can deliver
your reliability (answering emails, being on time with the schedule, etc…)
how much you charge
Second, I don’t think that having fan arts in your portfolio is a problem. I think it depends on the kind of fan art you do and what kind of publishing company you want to contact. I’m going to give you an example. If you draw let’s say Blade Runner and Tron fan art and that you contact a company that is specialized in Sci-Fi books, no problem. Same if you draw LOTR fan art and that you are contacting a company that publishes Heroic Fantasy stuff. What is important is that your portfolio shows your skills and that the artistic director thinks: “Wow! I love this person’s style! Exactly what I’m looking for!”
I think that in the end, it’s your technical level and your skills that will convince the company more than the subject of the art itself. You will also have to be able to work on a tight schedule, bring changes to your work constantly, etc. In one word: be professional.
If the people you contact are serious (and they will have to be serious because “small company” shouldn’t equate “unreliable company”) they will discuss with you beforehand everything they are expecting from you. For instance “I was impressed by your portfolio and your Alien and Prometheus fan art. I’m looking for an artist to draw a cover with an alien space ship, something very futuristic but also very organic. (blah blah blah) would you be interested? The ship would have to correspond to the book description and…”
I’m still scared I’m aiming too high.
If you don’t try, you’ll never know. As I told you, you need to be sure about time management, reliability more than your technical level because very often artists tend not to have an accurate opinion on what they do. They often underestimate their skills, think they are not good enough, compare themselves to other artists even if they KNOW it’s bad. In short, the true level of an artist is often close to:
Voilà! Just go for it! You can have a look at this post and this one to learn how to build a portfolio. Good luck, you can do it!
SHORTCUT TO GETTING THE RIGHT SKIN TONE!
So something that I know can be an issue is accidental white washing for some characters in Camp Camp. I wanna help fix that! If you use paint tool sai, or any art program, this will be useful!
Step one: right click and copy a reference picture
Step two: go to your art program, file, paste
Step three: select the dropper tool and select the base colour of the skin
Step four: choose an area for the skin tone. Right click, and set the colour.
Congrats! You got the skin colour! If you want, you can designate a whole area for their colour palette for more than just skin by repeating this process.
There you are! Hope this helps.
the amount of salt in this post, i love it
legit tho its so annoying when people white wash and then claim its because they dont know how to get the right color. Like, literally, there’s a tool that is specifically used for collecting colors T_T
and if you don’t want to stick to his exact canon color palette you could always just adjust the canon colors slightly
(example)
<– canon / lower saturation –>
if you go in and guess on his colors you’re probably more likely to end up white washing him without realizing it
also i once made a post for max in different shades of light/dark that i think could be useful too

Hey friends!
It’s Meg for this week’s TUTOR TUESDAY! I’ve been wanting to cover perspective again for awhile because my old tutorial is…well…let’s just say I’ve gotten better at formatting these. Plus there’s so much more to learn! If you have any recommendations send ‘em in here or my personal! Have fun, keep practicing, and I’ll see you next week!
Quick nose guide from some suggestions you guys sent me in my inbox, I hope it is helpful! ^^
Poor explanation, I hope the pictures will help better :P
So… Some people requested me this, and I really don’t think it adds something different from the tons of awesome coloring tutorials on the internet, but it was fun to make :) I hope I can help some of you guys xD
Just because it’s Elsa I added a few more details on the final pic, but the main idea all here.
Sorry for any grammar mistake
Sorry if you’re not interested and I made you scroll through this…
Hm, some people have asked me a face tutorial, I tried to do my best since I very amateur and a not so didactic person
I hope it will help you guys :3

Some people have asked me for this tutorial too, I know that a few informations here are pretty obvious, but I just thought they were valid to include, and it can or cannot work for you, I just hope you find this helpful in someway :)
I’m sorry for any grammar mistake, and I don’t know how to say somethings in english, so I also hope I made myself understandable :P
sorry for any grammar mistakes
long time without a tutorial… I tried to explain my general process of working here, hope someone will find it useful :)
Here it is, my long winded tutorial, complete with some step by step action. I see a lot of people talk about wanting to diversify their artwork but not knowing how. This is my help to you. You really should take the time to invest in learning diverse eye shapes as diverse artwork always makes you a better artist. And frankly I’m really tired of drawing tutorials that talk up character diversity but only have the stereotypical “one Asian eye”.
I did some step by steps for those three diagrams, but I actually got them from this blog which has 14 of those examples! (Bonus: it’s a makeup blog so if you need help with that or want some idea of how to shade these eyes, there ya go)
can you make a tutorial on how you do your lineart? Its gorgeous!
Thank you so much Anon!
Well how I do line-art??? My line-art is pretty sketchy… But let’s try…
I use Paint Tool SAI always, it’s weird when I use other software… Well First I do the sketch…
These are brush settings for this drawing, I use a canvas 5000*5000
I have everything in different layers!
I do everything in black!, because first I add the flat colors, and then I change the line-art color!
When you select this option you can change the color of the layer.
So these are the settings of the layer!
Hope this help!
Yey I finally finished it \o/
You find all of I say here in others thousand tutorials btw, and this happens for a reason :3 I swear I tried my best to explain what I do I tried to put all what I have in mind while drawing
Again, sorry for any grammar mistake, I hope I made myself understandable :P

quick & simple hair tutorial
For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.
Examples (all done by me):
Here’s an example for how you can use it
Great find, thanks!
