βΒ βoh. β she recognised him from somewhere. most likely one of the drinking establishments ( she knew the location of the vast majority, of-course ).Β βΒ what am i putting it down as, the second best elton john rendition of the evening?Β β
luegnerβ
Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β billie was often irritated when he met people whoβd give him a similar treatment as he tended to give them. however, honesty was a good character trait. one he should try to adapt to more. at least every now and then. so, the beer in his hands, regardless of the coincidence which really brought it here, would sweeten his night just so much more.Β βguess iβm a lucky lad then.β he mumbled, downing some of the bitter liquid. his elbow rested against the counter as he mustered the other man. they werenβt familiar. he didnβt know his face from the bar which was weirdly intriguing because william liked the think he knew about anybody around islesbury.Β βnot much of a night owl then? or just not your type of way to waste an evening on?β the irishman asked curiously now.<
he agreed with a casual shrug, β i suppose. β if one could term thatΒ an agreement. shaking his head, a bitter sigh leaves him.Β β there are better ways, yes. though i didnβt really have much of a choice, β he chuckles,Β also bitterly. there wasnβt a bone in his body that regretted his conductβ that would be like admitting that he made a mistake. but he did sorely miss out on the far more interesting life that he was leading prior to the headlines.Β β i hope youβve had a better time than i have, β he mused, somewhat referring to more than just the evening itself. adjusting to the area hadnβt gone down well for someone like xavier, who was waiting around for the dust to settle to get back into the game. though it was highly likely thereβd be plenty of his time spent idly.
* MESSAGE FROM AGNESFM :Β derin, you are absolutely beautiful but definitely no fool. dressed up as the lovely mrs daisy, i hope you enjoy the rest of the night and this gourmet cupcake.

derin held the cupcake in her right hand ( the left was occupied by her drinkΒ ), admiring the small details on the little delight.Β βΒ thank you,Β β she said, a pleasant smile covering her features.Β

βOh, ohβ¦β Lauren offered herself a moment to be taken aback by her own shock, then another moment for shame at her own presumptuousness.Β βIt wasnβt thatΒ awkward, I just couldnβt tell if there was somethingβ¦ wrong, or not,β she said, her voice tripping over itself with uncertainty.
She offered a smile, then extended her hand for a handshake.Β βLauren. Thatβs, um, my name. Iβm just not used to being stared at, accidentally orΒ on purpose.β
shaking her head, she gives the other woman a small smile, βΒ no, not at all. i hope i didnβt make you feel too conscious.Β βΒ having been informed several times that she had the sort of stare, even blank, that could look right through a person... derin thought it to be no harm in checking.
βΒ itβs nice to meet you lauren, β she nods.Β βΒ and really? iβm having a hard time believing that, β she narrowed her eyes with a smile.Β β if i hadnβt been in my own world, i would have probably been able to come over to say how well that look suits you,Β βΒ she said, words accompanied by some flurrying hands.Β β seriouslyβ you look great.Β β

to, xavier. "π₯" regards, daniel.
βΒ why, i am feeling incredibly popular tonight, β he remarks lightly. though he wasnβt going to say no. the host and owner of the establishment was, after all,Β best aware of what there was on offer. that, and he hadnβt reached his cut off point just quite yet.Β βΒ is this to get me through the no-doubt wonderful performance youβll be gracing us with? βΒ he smirks, words doused in humour.
π₯ to xavier from adelaide
xavier had been sampling the canapΓ©s when he caught sight of adelaide walking towards him. he was almost about to make some comment about how she should leave something for the rest of them when he became the recipient of one of the two tumblers in her hands.Β βΒ is this bribery?Β β he muses, a hint of a chuckle following his words before he put the glass to his mouth.Β β iβm inclined to think it is, purely based on the fact that this happens to be my go-to. β the whiskey went down neat after a day of work. or not work, considering his current situation.
gatheringswansβ
βme too, usually. tonight just didnβt particularly pan out,β he says; with his regular, non-descriptive clothing heβs got nothing on the look derinβs put together for tonight. had it been any other day, maybe danny wouldβve triedΒ a lot more as well.Β βyeah? iβm going to get to the food later, i have to drink my stress away first,β he says as he lifts his whisky glass a little. heβs exaggerating just a bit, not all of his day has been that bad, just the afternoon and the part where he got into another fight with his father.Β βi hear thereβs loads of stuff going on. karaoke, dance competition. and the date auction? my walletβs about to get a lot lighter i think,β danny jokes; heβs glad for it, reallyβthis townβs become a home for him at this point.Β βoh, i call it the black danny zuko. truth be told, i never actually came up with a costume and improvised with what i could find in my closet. it probably wouldβve been a lot more obvious if i got a wig or something but again, didnβt really think about it. so if thereβs a costume competition or something, iβm definitely taking the last place.β
β doesnβt matter. weβll host another event just for you, βΒ she chuckled before adding, β βa masquerade.Β β wide eyes were a tell-tale sign of the excitement that was already brewing inside of her. a small frown covered her features when he mentioned stress. β you know iβm here to listen if you need me to. if not now, whenever. orΒ your drinking buddy for the evening. β because a sober coach she was most definitely not. nodding at dannyβs words, it was almost as if the mini events going on tonight filtered their way back into her mind as he mentioned them.Β β ah yes. i think the charityβs going to have a good night. βΒ that was, after all, what was most important. shaking her head,Β βΒ youβre fineβ iβve seen plenty of people who havenβt even improvised. βΒ namely, the men in their regular suits. shrugging, she focused on danny once again.Β βΒ so, i know youβll be donating, but are you thinking of participating in anything thatβs going on? are we going to get a rendition of greased lightninβΒ ? β she jested.
Her heart was heavy because it was open, and so things filled it, and so things rushed out of it, but still the heart kept beating, tough and frighteningly powerful and meaning to shrug off the rest of her and continue on its own.

xavier nodded in the direction of the bartender, β i believe he misheard and handed me a pair instead. β it was so easy for him to be honest in simple moments like this, and yet entirely difficult when it was more so required. honestyβ such a fickle little thing in the right hands. there was also the small matter of him being too tired to pretend. for someone who hadnβt attended a public event since everything came to light, it was natural. though with the choc-o-bloc schedule that he was previously used to, one would assume xavier would not feel this way.Β βΒ i canβt remember the last time i stepped foot into a nightclub. say... fifteen or so years?Β βΒ he chuckled, turning his gaze to their surroundings. he felt a tad out of place even without factoring in the attire of the other attendees. then again, he felt out of place in islesbury itself; that would still take some used to.

for: @midcstouchβΒ / derin where: costume gala when: early in the night
Lauren was trying (and mostly failing) to let loose and let herself have a good time, an occurrence that wasnβt unusual. Her suit chafed, the music was either too quiet or too loud, and she couldnβt tell if this girl was staring at her.Β
She probably was, right? Sure, she usually was on the more paranoid side about these things, when people were usually just staring off into space, but she wasΒ dressed as Batwoman, which would give her a reason.
She had to do something. She couldnβt justβ¦ ignoreΒ the staring. She was 75% sure the staring was directed at her, and she was ready to take a stand. A meek stand, but a stand nonetheless.
βUhβ¦ hi?βΒ
β uh, hi, β she responded, tearing her gaze away that was previously fixed on the woman. well, not her specifically, more so, straightΒ ahead. she just so happened to be right in the middle of her straight ahead. β βpardon. i was just trying to focus. at first, that is. then i got carried away in my own thoughts and just...Β βΒ she shook her head, βΒ iβm sorry. β
that happened more often than she would like to admit. getting lost in the very thoughts she did her best to run away from. and yes, the night was young but her pre-event one person soirΓ©e had led derin in the need to centre herself.Β
there was also the matter that she didnβt know exactly just how long she had been staring.
β i can imagine it was really awkward, β she offered the other woman a small smile, clearly embarrassed by the situation at hand. where the gravest of actions did little to bring shame about her person, it was little things like this that made her cheeks colour crimson. because of how it made the other person feel.

by the time danny makes it back from new york, itβs late and the partyβs already in full swing. to make up for the fact that heβs missed possibly half of the night already, he leaves a very generous check at the donation booth and then heads out into the crowd to find some familiar faces. and get a drink, perhaps more thanβhe definitely needs it after having to spend most of the day around his father, whoβs managed to get on his every last nerve. but now that dannyβs here, haphazardly dressed in his last-minute costume, heβs determined to not let his old man spoil his mood any longer.Β βlook at you, nice costume,β he strikes up the conversation. most of the people here look like theyβve actually put thought into what theyβre wearing. not danny, obviously.Β βplease tell me i didnβt miss anything big. i swear, i always miss the fun parts when i end up being late.β
giving him a wide smile, derin twirled before facing him again, the beads of her dress dancing away.Β βΒ thanks, danny. you know i wouldnβt miss a chance to dress up. βΒ not that she didnβt have the time to do so on a daily basis, but derin preferred a pared back look. if one could call her still polished appearance that. nevertheless, it was not as overtly-glamorous as daisy gatsby, thatβs for sure. β i donβt think so,Β βΒ she took a canapΓ© from the passing waiter before taking a bite, β i love these. βΒ food and drink was a distraction for someone who otherwise did her best to stay present in a conversationΒ β actuallyβΒ you might want to double-check if you have missed something. truth be told, i donβt particularly know.Β βΒ derin never did do well at paying attention to what was going on at events in the last few many years. scanning over his attire, she cocked her head to the sideΒ β who are you supposed to be, by the way? β

he frowns, perplexed by the answer at first, until realisation dawns.Β βof all the characters that could be inconspicuous, you chose a serial killer for a charity function?β daniel makes a noise that scrapes the roof of his mouth, a laugh, almost. βjames bond,β he replies, nodding slightly, feeling as if he might have found a kindred spirit.Β βat least, like you, that is what i have told others.β
he shrugs, βΒ if the shoe fits. β or rather... his attire. there was a brief recollection of an intern on his campaign pointing out that some fashion magazine had put down the character of bateman as being close to xavierβs β aesthetic β on a profile.
god, he did not miss that.
xavier nodded,Β βΒ not one for costume parties either, i take it? βΒ even prior to his fall from grace, he wasnβt one for adhering to dress codes. he had one staple look for those that required masksβ a half-mask being the only thing to signify the poor attempt at the phantom of the opera.
tonight required no such effort from him.Β βΒ iβm all for having a good time but this... β he gestured to the sea of costumes surrounding them,Β βΒ isnβt really my sort of thing. at least the liquorβs decent.Β β

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β and she wants to drown at the bottom of her glass, finishes the clear liquid with just a few large sips because it pains her. it hurts her to know that tonight she wasnβt the center of attention. or more specifically, the center of his attention. adrianaβs thoughts were trailing off, reflecting on all the reasons why it was her fault that she now had to watch him walk off with another girl when β¦ the bitterness of the alcohol brought her back to reality and as the bartender was on his way she gestured him to refill her glass like he was about to do with the one of the girl next to her. brown eyes now gazed over to the widely smiling woman who was leaning against the bar by her side.Β βa martini?β the latina asked, almost making it sound like an offer.Β βoh yeah, i can only recommend it. let me tell you, the olive will change your life.β what a relief to speak and think about something that wasnβt zach quinn. even if it was just for a second. a moment of relief from the anger and jealousy inside of her.
β is that so? β she raised a brow, β iβll hold you to it. β hardlyβ there was a very slim chance derin would hold someone to actual promises, much less throwaway statements. pushing aside the fresh flute of champagne the bartender had placed before her, she instructed him to fix her the same as the woman beside her.Β β you donβt seem to be enjoying yourself, βΒ she voiced her observation. not that there was an unwritten rule that one always had to be in a good mood when at a party, or even merely outside of the comfort of home. derin herself had spent several evenings at glittering events, dressed to the nines yet glued to the bar due to a sour mood.Β β the olive not doing its trick? β she added moments later with a light chuckle, not wanting to over-step her boundaries, nor make it seem like she was prying. just... observing. nevertheless, she was also wholly available should the woman want someone to listen to something. anything.
