Nymph’s Workshop makes unique, handcrafted lamps out of coconut shells)
A wonderful combination of the natural and unnatural.
Greek philosopher Socrates (ca. 470–399 BC): a bust of him, and a few quotes from him.
"There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance."
"Remember that there is nothing stable in human affairs; therefore avoid undue elation in prosperity, or undue depression in adversity."
"The shortest and surest way to live with honour in the world, is to be in reality what we would appear to be; and if we observe, we shall find, that all human virtues increase and strengthen themselves by the practice of them."
"True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us."
“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”
“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.”

Olafur Eliasson installs gigantic riverbed in Danish museum
“Riverbed is running.” So tweeted Studio Olafur Eliasson yesterday – a poetic press release if ever I heard one – to announce the opening of the Danish-Icelandic artist’s latest epic installation. Something of a titan in the art world, having already created moon, he’s now builtriverbed in the south wing of the Louisiana Musuem of Modern Art in Denmark.
Olafur says: “I am interested in how you connect this landscape to the rest of the world and ultimately, how you experience yourself within it.” Visitors can walk along the riverbed, across the pebbles and stones heaped about it, and through the semi-submerged gallery doorways. There’s also a mesmerising model room, full of glowing globes and prototypes. Contained within the stark white walls, the riverbed becomes momentous; there’s no other scenery to distract from it, so it itself becomes magical. Olafur points out that “the further away we get from the local context, the cruder the sensing becomes.”
Just as a river is ever-changing, so is this installation. “Nothing ever remains the same” tweeted the studio, with pictures of the rock piles visitors have already started building. It also retweeted @telescoper: “I don’t know what’s more fascinating, the work itself or the way people behave inside it!”
In other words, riverbed rocks.

How Street Maps Can Be Sexist | Co.Exist | ideas impact
OpenStreetMap is a massive free map of the world, editable by anyone. Companies like Flickr, Foursquare, and Craigslist all use it in their products. But unlike Google Maps, which rigorously chronicles every address, gas station, and shop on the ground, OpenStreetMap’s perspective on the world is skewed by its contributors. “When data is being contributed to OpenStreetMap, there is a specific bias because people contribute data they are interested in and familiar with. If they’re all male, maybe they forget to put in day care centers,” says Pickle. There are far more male contributors than female contributors to OpenStreetMap, though female contributions have been increasing, according to Pickle, who still works for Boundless in the role of chief revenue officer. “Anecdotally, there’s more info [on OpenStreetMap] on strip clubs than day care centers,” he says.
