Roots Part 2
Band Member: Calum
Type: Soulmate AU
Description: When your father walked out with his soulmate, you realised that soulmates were nothing but ugly things that ruined your life. You couldn’t understand how people dedicated their lives to finding “the one” when there were dreams to be chased. But then you meet him and maybe a soulmate wouldn’t be too awful after all.
Author’s Note: No, you are not hallucinating, I am finally finishing off this story. I am so sorry this took so long. I hope you accept nearly 4,000 words as an apology.
Please read Part One first!
“Calum?” your assistant repeated with a frown. “What does he have to do with this? It’s a disaster of epic proportions, the business… I need to call PR and decide how we handle this. They’re saying how irresponsible you are, God, this is a catastrophe.”
You looked over at her and sighed loudly in place of the words you did not have.
You could hardly deny that the whole situation was a mess and all of it happening just because you trusted a guy who said he loved you. If only you’d stuck to being your old cynical self who didn’t fall for the whole soulmate bullshit, you wouldn’t have just wrecked your quiet life.
Resting your head in your hands, you groaned purely out of frustration.
“What do you need me to do? Get the team to deny everything?” Christina asked frantically as she flicked through the stack of papers on your desk. “We could claim it’s a rumour from a disgruntled employee? Should I call your father? He’s handled this before, maybe he—”
“There’s no point denying it, Christina, they have pictures,” you pointed out.
She looked back at you hopelessly, resting her hands on the scattered papers. You felt bad for the woman. After all, if you were going down, she was going with you in her mind at least. You rolled your chair over to the old cherry oak liquor cabinet your father had left behind. You pulled out a bottle from the back. You read the label and moved back over to the desk with it.
“You can’t be serious,” Christina said coldly when she saw the bottle.
“Why not?” you asked her with a sarcastic frown. “Champagne’s for celebrating, I’d have a martini but we don’t seem to have any olives.”

You didn’t believe in soulmates.
Well, not the kinds that were happily immortalised in fairy tales anyway. Soulmates existed, you couldn’t argue that the tree marks didn’t exist without looking crazy but they weren’t the kind that were good for you, not like they were in the books. You’d watched from a young age how soulmates destroyed each other and took everyone else around them down too. The thought that one day you might be the same scared you. Your parents weren’t exactly great role models, they hadn’t been soulmates and you hadn’t ever thought they were. It had been hard when people found out, they looked down at you like you were a kicked puppy. Their voices would echo around your seven-year-old mind, you’d tug your mother’s sleeve and ask why they felt sorry for you. Because you’re not like them, baby, you’re different. “Different” had been your mother’s understatement of the century. You hadn’t fared well with it at school, the bullying had been unbearable. But you had coped, you’d survived it with minimal damage. You’d fooled yourself into thinking that once school was over, nobody would care about your parents. Oh, how naïve you were. It got worse when you realised that adults could be even crueller with their digs and taunts. Yet the fact that your parents weren’t soulmates wasn’t the biggest issue you had, it was what happened when your father found his soulmate when you were younger.
The thud of the box landing on your desk startled you. You looked up and saw the smiling face of your personal assistant, you could’ve sworn that Christina was always grinning. She always looked like life was fantastic since she’d met her soulmate in October. She constantly mentioned him, pointing to her ring which you had to stop yourself from rolling your eyes at sometimes. You couldn’t understand how your father had coped with her constant happiness.
“That band are here to record,” she sang cheerily. “I’ve booked them into the studio and I have the techs—”
“Christina, it’s your job to know what’s happening. I have this mountain of paperwork to look through so unless I’m needed, please let me get on with it.”
She nodded, the smile still plastered on her lips. “Okay, but just to let you know you have a meeting with the band at ten.”
Your mouth fell open as you glanced at the clock. It was five to ten.
“When were you planning on telling me?” you asked her with a sigh.
“Well, Stanley called—”
“Of course he did,” you muttered.
You pushed yourself away from your desk and tried to conceal the eye roll. You picked up the files on your desk labelled “5 Seconds of Summer” and tried not to sigh at the fact you had to deal with them. It wasn’t anything personal, you’d never met them before, but they shouldn’t have been your problem. If you were forced to thank your father for one thing, it was for leaving you the recording studio. It was the only thing you could actually say was a sort of advantage to your dad walking out to chase his soulmate halfway across the world. The studio was a steady way to earn money, its reputation made sure the bills were paid but this wasn’t your passion. Your song writing had taken a backseat indefinitely while you played CEO of a company that you never wanted to be involved with. You had tried to tell him repeatedly he couldn’t just leave Jet Studios so when the appointment for your father to sign it over fell on your doormat, you knew it was the end of you chasing your own dream and the beginning of clearing up after your wayward father.
You fixed your hair in the one way glass before walking into the meeting room. The band hadn’t arrived yet, it was their first time using the studios in your city. You’d heard that they were big on the music scene, not that you followed it much anymore. You glanced at the immature tree on your wrist, the scars from when you were drunk still remained. They made the tree looked jagged and twisted from how your skin had healed. You tried to cover it these days with the media already trying to find out who you were, they’d nicknamed you the “Mysterious Miss Jet” like you were really that hard to get hold of. They weren’t interested in the truth only scandal so when you told the magazine you were normal, they’d taken it that you were struggling with the depressing reality that your father had abandoned you to take care of his empire. You’d laughed at the article when Christina had been almost distraught by the whole thing. That’s when you’d realised that you and Christina were two very different people.
The door opened and you tried your best to smile at the four boys who entered. It wasn’t their fault you were here, they were just here to sign the terms of lease of the studio while they recorded their next album.
The confusion on their faces was clear, it amused you since they were expecting a balding, middle aged man opposed to your much prettier self.
“Are we in the right room?” the tallest one asked before he sat down.
“No offense but you’re a little young to own a music recording place, aren’t you?” another said.
“So you’re the owner of Jet Studios?” the dark haired boy questioned. “Because we—”
“Need to sign a contract?” you finished his sentence. “I’m the owner now, my father decided it was time to chase a new, younger dream called Hanna half way across the world.”
You saw the attempts to refrain from laughing but you smirked at your own joke, it was a line you’d started using since you’d taken over even if Hanna had been around for years and the only reason your father had left the studios was because Hanna had decided a new country would be exciting. But you knew she just wanted to forget your father had had a life before she’d walked into it. The dark haired guy laughed then threw you an apologetic smile. You slid the sheets out to the boys and threw the pens to them.
“It’s only a quick thing to say you won’t damage the studio on purpose and any breakages will be paid for,” you explained quickly. “Basically, don’t be a dick and we’re all good.”
“Is that all you’re going to say?” the curly haired one said. “Like that’s it?”
You nodded your head slowly as you wondered if you’d forgotten something.
“I’m pretty sure that’s it,” you replied with practically no confidence. “Unless you have any questions?”
“Yeah, who are you?” the dark haired one asked. “I guess we better introduce ourselves too.”
They headed around the four of them until you knew them as Ashton, Calum, Luke and Michael then you told them your name, making the whole thing feel like it was your first day at a new school.
“I’m guessing you didn’t want the studio?” Mikey said to you.
You shook your head with a laugh. “I hadn’t been in this place since I was sixteen until the day I got the keys. It’s not my thing, this isn’t how I planned on spending my life.”
You brushed your hair out of your face and looked at them.
“I think we’ll get on,” you added with a smile. “The first band I’ve dealt with that haven’t asked if I’d like to be shown a good time.”
“We’re real gentlemen, we’d at least buy you dinner first,” Ashton said which earnt a laugh from the others.
You rolled your eyes but at least this time you were laughing. The others made your skin crawl just thinking about how creepy they were.
“Right, so if you’re happy, you can head over to the studio and if you’ve got any issues, talk to Christina, my PA. She’s pretty resourceful, high on life but okay.”
They nodded and thanked you. You smiled but sighed when you saw the crate of documents that Christina had probably abandoned because Stanley had called.
“I swear I pay her to just hide things unintentionally,” you muttered.
Calum moved quickly to help you, saying something about proving what Ash said about them being gentlemen. He dipped to pick up the crate at the same time as you did though your hands made it first. He looked up at you like you were stuck in a romantic movie, though you had to admit, the boy was beautiful. His eyes dropped to your hands just as the smile broke out. He opened his mouth to say something, you didn’t know what because as soon as his eyes rested on your wrist, his jaw snapped shut. The scars seemed to change his manner, he stiffened for a minute. You expected the usual look of disgust, the one that told you that they knew it had been you to ruin your mark like that.
But his callused fingers took your wrist and traced the deepest scar.
“You’ve been through the wars,” he mumbled so only you’d hear.
You were almost too surprised to speak but somehow you managed to.
“Yeah, something like that. I got drunk and the bottle won.”
From his expression, you knew he didn’t believe it was that straightforward but he didn’t pry. Instead he stood up and smiled at you, carrying the box like it was nothing.
“Hey, guys, I’ll meet you at the studio,” he said to them. “I’m going to help take these to the boss’ office.”
They nodded but Michael nudged and winked at Calum before slipping out of the door to follow Ashton and Luke. Calum waited for you to take the lead, you walked silently down the corridor. Your eyes caught on how defined he was in the reflection of the one way glass. He was the kind of guy you could only dream of having as your soulmate, at least if you actually wanted to find your soulmate. You liked to tell yourself that the chances were slim with seven billion people in the world. You weren’t ready to confront the issues you had that surrounded soulmates. But, you found yourself thinking, if you were then Calum was not a bad place to start looking. Maybe if I explained why my mark is like it is. You shook your head, Calum wasn’t going to be interested in some screwed up philosophy. Why were you so bothered about what this boy thought anyway? You’d just met him. Honestly, you sighed mentally, I can’t go after the first guy who is nice to me now.
You walked by Christina who was frantically hunting for something, the phone cradled to her ear as sheets flew everywhere. You held the door open for Calum who eyed your PA with some level of concern. You kicked the door closed. He dropped the box on your coffee table and gestured to the door.
“Is she okay? She looks a little lost.”
You hopped up onto the edge of your desk and swung your legs like you’d done when you had come here as a child.
“Christina is her own worst enemy, she forgets things and I have no idea how my dad coped with the preppy attitude at six in a morning.”
Calum came closer, admiring something on the desk though you knew it was something else. You felt the nervousness radiating from him like you’d morphed into a sabretooth tiger in the last few minutes.
“Calum, are you okay?”
He looked up at you, his doe brown eyes looking at you widely. He nodded quickly before he backed away.
“I – I better go do some stuff,” he stuttered as he opened the door to escape.
You creased your brow but you smiled at him, maybe you were wrong about him not being a bad soulmate option. He was intimidated by the idea of being alone with you, which for some reason, you found hilarious. You’d never intimidated somebody like him before, it made the boss thing almost worth it. Almost.
–
For a few days, you didn’t see Calum. If you saw the boys wandering the corridors, Calum was never there. Apparently he’d been hit by a burst of song writing inspiration and hadn’t wanted to stop until he had it all out on paper. You couldn’t help but be a little jealous. Song writing had been your thing until your father landed you with the studios. You’d refused to sell him any of your songs because you knew it was his way of making up for the arguments and the shitty childhood you’d been landed with. You wanted to prove your songs were good, you needed to see if you could make it without Jet Studios but you knew that you’d never find out now. There wasn’t enough time to write between meeting clients, signing new deals and organising the chaos your father had left behind. You knew that in time, you might have a shot at crafting lyrics again but until then, you were stuck with pretty things swarming your brain without anywhere to put them.
You’d come back from yet another meeting with yet another client who wanted to know where your father was. You weren’t sure you could face hearing the same old joke you look different, Jet again without biting somebody’s head off in the process. You walked by Christina who was on the phone again, you hadn’t got the patience to ask her to stop calling Stanley today. She looked up like she wanted to say something but you didn’t stop to listen, instead you slammed your office door behind you. You closed your eyes and exhaled sharply.
“Bad day?”
You looked around in shock to find the owner of the voice. Calum was sat on your black leather sofa wearing a smug smile like he hadn’t ran out of your office a couple of days ago. He stood up and made his way to you, he looked confident now about what he wanted to say whereas it had been too much last time. He walked you backwards, taking your wrists and pinning them above your head with one hand so you had to listen to him. His grip was loose enough for you to escape but, god, you didn’t want to. His chest was rising and falling fiercely and the smirk on his lips made your legs feel weak. What was he doing to you? Guys never made you feel like this.
“You’ve been in my head and you won’t fucking leave,” he mumbled into your ear.
You felt his breath against your cheek and shivered. He lifted his wrist up and revealed the summer tree, you stared at it mesmerised by how it moved. You’d never seen one up close, your father had barely said goodbye and you tended to ignore Christina’s happy attempts of proving it was true love with Stanley. Calum moved it away and stroked your cheek lightly.
“And now I know why. You’re my soulmate.”
“Fuck,” you muttered. “That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Calum looked up at your wrist and frowned, you guessed your mark was too broken to change or maybe Calum had got the wrong girl. He let your arms drop but he didn’t move back, instead he seemed closer but you didn’t want to run from him.
“I know it’s you,” he said with a grin. “I just know. I wrote a song about you.”
“Calum, you don’t want it to be me,” you said quickly. “You really don’t.”
You looked away from him and took a deep breath.
“My parents weren’t soulmates then my dad left to go chasing after his when I was ten. I’ve got a messed up view of soulmates, Calum. You hardly know me, it’s the best time to leave before you get too caught up in it all.”
“Yeah,” he said with a breathy laugh. “I’m not sure it works like that.”
You moved towards your desk, unsure of how you could convince him to run for his own sanity. But then it hit you when you saw the determination etched upon his face as he watched you. You reached into your father’s cabinet and placed two crystal glasses on the desk with a bottle of brandy onto the desk.
“Sit down then,” you said as you poured two generous glasses. “And I’ll give you a lifetime of reasons of why this won’t work.”
–
The sunlight streaked into your bedroom through your blinds, the bars of light spread across the bed sheets that were tangled around you. You tried to piece together what had happened the night before, the hangover making your head feel groggy. You rolled over, only to bump into a very naked Calum Hood in your bed. That’s when it all fell into place. The moaning, the arching back, the screams.
Calum’s eyes slowly opened, his arms stretched over your head. His arm circled around your back and he pulled you closer to him.
He chuckled darkly with the biggest shit eating grin you’d ever seen. “I think last night went well.”
You rolled your eyes but fuck you hadn’t felt this good since your wild teen years.
“I didn’t know you were that flexible,” he added slyly.
You nudged him before brushing your hair back from your face. You knew you must look awful, a sweaty hot mess that had obviously drank too much but Calum was still looking down at you like you’d just walked off the runway.
“Last night,” he started, “you started to tell me about your mark but you fell asleep before you really explained.”
“That’s probably a good thing,” you sighed as you tipped your head back against his arm. “It’s not a pretty story.”
“I’m not here for pretty,” Cal said into your hair. “I’m here not matter what, that’s kind of what soulmates do.”
You laughed a little, it still sounded weird when he said it. The word sounded odd in his accent but that’s what made it so perfect. He lifted your wrist into his hand and traced the scars across the tree with his thumb. He waited, simply beholding them and willing you to tell their story.
“After my dad left, my mum went a little off the rails. She’d party and drink and sleep with guys just to feel something like she’d had with my father. I was just passed around like some re-gifted Christmas present until she pulled herself together. I guess I hit my teens and thought that was how people dealt with anger and pain. One night, I flew off the handle when I got drunk. Walked into my dad’s studio, smashed all of the windows in the place. In my head, all that mark did was ruin lives so I tried to destroy it and it looks like I succeeded. Look, nobody knows about that. My dad swept it under the carpet and told everybody it was from some freak skiing accident.”
Calum brought your wrist to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss to your tree.
“I’m glad you’re out of that stage in your life,” he said softly. “You know I won’t say anything, soulmate’s honour. Though I’m amazed the media didn’t go crazy, Jet’s daughter destroys studio.”
“Dad paid a lot of money to make it look like a robbery,” you admitted. “It was some form of miracle the press never heard about it all. I guess my dad’s money really got me out of trouble. What time is it?”
Calum groaned, mumbling something about how he wanted to spend the day lounging around rather than recording.
“You didn’t need to be in early today, right?” he asked you after he’d fished his phone out from under your bed. “Because it’s almost twelve.”
You jumped up, picking up your towel from the laundry pile. “Shit, I have a meeting at one with another band.”
Calum laid back as you ran around getting dressed and he laughed when you swore at how hungover you looked. You threw a pillow at him and told him to get dressed.
“I told the guys I’m sick,” he said as he stretched out. “I didn’t think you’d have to go in.”
You shrugged and tried to resist calling Christina to say you were feeling like you’d caught a cold or something just so you could crawl back into bed next to him. You closed your eyes and shook your head with a smile.
“Damn you, Calum Hood,” you said which made him laugh. “There are some spare keys in the flower pot by the door if you decide to leave today.”
“I’ve got to, I’ve got something I need to do today now you’re blowing me off.”
You glared at him jokingly. “Don’t make me feel guilty.”
“I’ll be here when you get home,” he said with a smile.
–
You’d never wanted to leave work this much before. You’d even smiled at Christina when she told you about Stanley’s date plans which had confused her even more than usual. Your mood had been better than it had ever been since you’d taken over.
Just as you shoved the final folder into your bag, Christina barged into your office with this terrified look on her face that made you think somebody had died.
“Are you okay?” you asked her as she stumbled around to your computer. “Christina?”
She googled your name and clicked on the first article that came up. You wondered if this was her attempt at a joke until you read the headline.
MET JET STUDIO’S NEW OWNER: FORMER OFF THE RAILS TEEN
You skim read the article as the sick feeling rose in your throat. They’d got the whole story, the break in, the smashed up interior, the broken mark, even the cover up was mentioned.
“They all have the same story, all calling you crazy or deranged, they’re questioning if people should sign with the studio or label anymore. The phone has been ringing off the hook since the news broke. Who the hell sold the story?” she told you quickly. “What do I tell the clients?”
You sat back into your office seat and rested your head in your hands. There was only one person that sprang into your mind.
“Oh Calum, what have you done?”
Sooo I've been thinking about writing again 🤔

“You’re not going home for Thanksgiving?” You and Calum were sitting in his kitchen, big bowls of cereal in front of you on the table. Calum shrugged while shoveling a spoonful of cereal into his mouth.
“Plane tickets are too expensive,” he mumbled around the bite, seemingly unbothered. You, on the other hand, didn’t like the thought of him spending the holiday alone.
“I could ask my mom if you could come home with me,” you suggested. Calum paused with his spoon in midair, glancing up at you.
“Do you really want the first time I meet your family to be on Thanksgiving? Won’t that be kinda stressful?” His eyes seemed nervous as he thought it over, lowering his spoon of cereal back to the bowl.
“I mean, yeah, it can be stressful, but we’ve been dating for almost a year. Don’t you think it’s time for you to meet them?” Calum bit at his lip, thinking it over. “I’ll ask my mom, but I’m sure she’ll say yes.”
“Fine,” he sighed, stirring his cereal. “But if there’s family holiday drama I’m hanging out with your dog.”

“Of course I tried!”
“Luke, this can’t happen! Ashton and I are finally…” I began crying as I looked back at Ashton. He walked by and placed a kiss on my forehead.
“I’m going to leave you two to talk and shower.” I looked back at Luke.
“We need to do something.”
the first time (nsfw) - c.h.
hi all!! this is the thirteenth installment of my ‘firsts’ series with Calum. there will be more blurbs to come, and I hope you enjoy this one!! :-) follow the tag anarchyaustralia firsts if you want to be notified when a new blurb is posted!! (see all other ‘first’ blurbs here)
There was a movie playing in the background. There was a movie playing and you remember choosing the movie and putting in the DVD but for the life of you you couldn’t remember what movie it was. You were currently enthralled in Calum, straddling his hips as your hands worked through his hair, your lips already tingly and sore from how long and passionately you’d been kissing. The night had started innocently enough, him calling and saying that soccer practice was cancelled for the night, you telling him you were already in your pajamas but he could come over and watch a movie with you. That’s all you had planned, to watch a movie and cuddle with your boyfriend.
But here you were now, Calum’s hands sliding under your sleep shirt to feel your skin, to grip your hips and pull you even closer to him as your teeth knocked clumsily together as you repositioned your kiss, your crotch pressing against his. You knew he was hard, there was no hiding it, and you knew you were turned on - you could already feel the wetness between your legs. Calum’s hands began to trail up your back, your shirt pushing up enough so that your back and tummy were exposed, his fingers seemingly gripping at your non-existent bra.
Calum broke the kiss, breathing heavily. “Are you not wearing a bra?” he asked, his voice deep and gravely, his lips extra puffy from kissing. You shook your head, leaning in to kiss and suck at the skin along his jaw. You could feel his heartbeat, just as quick and erratic as yours was in the moment. Calum groaned, tugging at your shirt so your breasts were exposed and palming them, his warm hands feeling sure and comforting against your skin. You moved to pull off your shirt completely, leaning back so he could take you in. He licked over his lips, his gaze steady on your chest before flicking up to meet your eyes, an underlying question behind them.

Save the Boy
Band Member: Calum Hood
Type: Hunger Games AU
Description: You won last year, you fought tooth and nail to make it home to the boy you loved. But the person who came home pushed him away until he left. Now you’re forced to mentor him and perhaps kiss goodbye to the boy who loved you too.
Your thoughts were of the forest that stretched beyond the chain-linked fence. It was a place you went to escape. You wasted your time identifying herbs and gathering them or throwing knives at the tree trunks. You stared out longingly at it then towards the beach and ocean that skirted the edge of District Four. The television rambled on about how hard the times of war were. They claimed it was so that history wasn’t repeated twice, so the Dark Days were a thing of the past, but humankind were fickle and tainted in your opinion. Nature, on the other hand, was stable enough for you to trust. Your mother told you that you had healer’s hands, which was why you were less suspicious of the wilderness. You could almost imagine the soft grass under your bare feet by the lake your parents took you to when you and your sister were children. Your mother taught you to swim one summer in the lake since the ocean filled you with dread. You were almost into your father’s arms when you had fallen under the calm water from the shock that you were actually swimming. Your mother had screamed in horror until your father had pulled you back up and she’d hugged you close to her chest in fear it might happen again, that was your last memory of her. Alive, at least.
You heard the front door close and assumed it would be your sister. It was never going to be your father this early on Reaping Day. He was going spend the entire thing in the tavern, trying hopelessly to drown the memories of when you were reaped. You were happy to have the Victor’s house to yourself. Leah was the social butterfly, with a seemingly never-ending string of boys that chased after her. She was exactly like your mother apparently. Leah had to tell you stories about her since you were almost too young to remember if she even existed at all. Your father never spoke about your mother except on her birthday when he brought home a single water lily and left it next to their wedding photograph.
“No time to sit around, you have to be at the Justice building at two,” Leah called out from the kitchen.
She appeared a moment later, wiping her hands on an old towel. She’d had her hair pinned up for the ceremony which made her look even more like your mother. You were glad your father wasn’t around to see her. Leah looked worried again, the threat of you being reaped had ended but now you had to be a mentor, her fear had renewed itself but nowhere near the levels you were feeling. She was concerned the stress of mentoring would be too much while you were worried about President Snow, he wasn’t known for his kindness or fairness.
“You have to look your best for the cameras!” she argued as she walked closer. “What would Mum think if—?”
“If she was here? She’d want to know how her little girl was capable of murder,” you fired back before shuddering.
Leah flinched, she hated you calling yourself that. But it was true, wasn’t it? Twenty three children hadn’t returned home last year. The physical scars had been wiped away in the days after you’d made it out but the mental ones weren’t so easy to airbrush out. You still slept with a knife tucked under your pillow, you still screamed yourself awake – your only comfort was knowing the big house was too well built for the screaming to wake Leah and your father.
“I know you’re worried about Calum—”
“Why would I be worried about him?” you fired back with raised eyebrows.
“You still love him for goodness sake!” Leah snapped at you before her expression softened. “It’s his final year. After this, you can forget the Games. They can’t hurt you anymore.”
You bit your lip rather than retort. Your sister was so naïve and trusting of the Capitol. You weren’t stupid, you knew they’d take every cheap shot they could manage and Calum was a perfect way to get to you.
“Come on, I’ve laid out a dress,” she said quietly. “Dad wanted me to say good luck, he’s bartering the daily catch in the tavern like usual.”
“Don’t lie to me, Leah. He’s getting blind drunk to forget last year, it’s just a shame I can’t join him.”

He used to lift your wrist and smile at the words, Michael always claimed it was a sick joke that the last words you’d hear your soulmate say were going to be Do you love me? He’d spend hours coming up with scenarios the words might be uttered. His favourite happened to be you had taken the last slice of pizza and your soulmate would ask that very question then etched upon their skin would be the immortal words do I fuck. The idea entertained him for hours as he’d describe in detail how their face would look as they stormed out of the house, only to realise that you had been their soulmate all along.
You let Michael have his wild theories, it kept him smiling on the long tours away from home. You were his shoulder to lean on but you couldn’t help but wonder if you were supposed to be something more with the words on his skin. What else did to the moon match? The only time you’d ever questioned it, he’d smiled and kissed the top of your head like it was just a cute idea you’d adopted.
But now you sat at the airport years later, this time you were leaving and you’d told him you were going to seek a Great Perhaps if only to see him laugh at the use of famous last words. You knew you weren’t going to return again, you had nothing to come back to now Michael had his wife and a baby who looked so much like him it hurt you. You were happy for him, you prayed that his wife was the right one for him and that he’d hedged his bets with the right woman to be his soulmate in the end. You just knew you couldn’t stay because with time, you’d resent him for his happiness and you wanted him to remember you the way you used to be. The girl who sat up into the night when he missed home, the best friend he was proud to introduce, the only one who understood him when he needed somebody.
“Don’t go,” he begged you at the gate. “I’ll miss you too much.”
You forced yourself to smile even though your lips were trembling.
“I’ll miss you too, Mike,” you said before biting your lip. “I can’t stay though. This place is suffocating me.”
“Tell me you won’t disappear,” he said. “Tell me that this isn’t you walking out of my life.”
You cupped his cheek lightly. “I wish I could but that is what I’m doing. I’m leaving you to be happy with your family, Mikey.”
“Do you love me?” he asked without thinking.
You smiled softly, finally you knew the truth. You were soulmates and your heart was breaking.
“To the moon,” you whispered before kissing his cheek and walking to your gate.

You raised the coffee cup to your lips and smiled when you felt Michael’s arms wrap around your waist. He kissed your neck then your shoulder before whispering good morning, beautiful into your ear. It was almost a joke when you’d been up all night putting the world to rights.
You rested your head against his shoulder and let him trace his fingers along your stomach through his shirt. You put the mug down on the counter and turned around to face him. Reaching up, you kissed him lightly. He tasted like mint toothpaste and the traces of coffee from your lips.
“Fuck, you look good in my clothes,” he mumbled into your skin. “I never ever want that top back. You have to wear it forever now, not just any girl gets my favourite shirt.”
You raised your eyebrows at him, your teeth grazing across your lips and biting your bottom lip because you knew it drove him crazy. “So there have been other girls? Michael Clifford, I am offended. Here I was thinking I was special.”
Michael peppered kisses across your exposed skin before looking at you. “Oh you are special, princess. I’ve never stayed up all night talking to anybody about pointless shit before and haven’t missed sleep one bit.”
You smiled at him and patted his cheek. “That’s because I’m fucking fantastic.”
You pecked his cheek before putting your cup into the sink. You stretched and tried to pretend Michael’s eyes weren’t fixed on your legs.
“I won’t be here tonight,” you told him before smiling at him sarcastically. “How will you cope?”
“I won’t,” he sighed. “I’ll have to call one of my many other booty calls.”
He rested his hands on the countertop and tried not to grin at you. Michael knew it as well as you did, this was way more than just a casual hook-up. You’d practically moved in and even had a set of spare clothes in a drawer he’d let you have.
“You wouldn’t dare, Clifford,” you said with a threatening finger pointed directly at his heart. “Or I’ll have to tell my friends I wasn’t spending the week at my boyfriend’s, it was just some dick who wasted my time.”
“Boyfriend?” he repeated after you like he was trying it on for size. “I could get used to hearing that a lot more.”

You waited until Luke was asleep before you dared to go to bed. You promised him you’d try tonight, you’d try to sleep next to him you used to before the nightmares intervened. You’d felt guilty for waking him up when he had early flights and days at the studio so you’d taken to sleeping on the sofa. But the nightmares had you firmly in their grasp. They felt so real but when he managed to shake you from it, you felt safe. You told him you were a mass of problems that dwelled in your head, that he should run at the earliest opportunity but he had smiled and asked if the problems paid rent to stick around. It seemed nothing you could tell him would drive him away. He became a permanent fixture, your protector when your dreams turned bitter. He helped you captain the ship when the seas in your head got rough. You were scared if you pushed too hard, he’d finally say enough was enough but he never did. Even when the demons from your nightmares crept out and made you see monsters in the shadows, he would kiss your temples and tell you he was there. He couldn’t make you better but sure as hell made you feel less alone.
You slipped under the covers, hoping you wouldn’t wake him. You put your back to him and listened to the sound of his breathing. It was even and calm, you imagined if Luke was an ocean he’d be the kind surfers complained about. He’d be as calm as the mill pond.
“Babe?”
You froze.
He wrapped his arms lazily around you and pulled you closer.
“That’s better,” he sighed into your neck.
And you smiled when he began snoring again.
See You Again
Band Member: Calum
Type: Relationship AU
Request: “so basically like you and Calum had been a pretty serious couple like a year ago but then his tour came in the way and you had to go separate ways. Your dad works at BBC Radio 1 and he had to do the sound check things or something there and you go to help him but have no idea that Calum and the boys are there and you see him…” I changed it up a little.
You groaned as your alarm started crying out for you to wake up.
Your summer job with your father was killing you, the early starts were evil. He’d insisted you couldn’t spend your gap year moping after your break up. He had done a pretty good job of censoring out Calum, he never mentioned Cal’s band when they visited or featured at the radio station he worked at. Your dad knew that any reminder only made your heart ache for what might’ve been but lately, you’d tried to carry on as normal. If Calum hadn’t have been going on tour, you knew that your relationship would have survived until now. It had been a mutual breakup, Calum had brought up the tour and you’d sighed as you knew why he’d done it. You had waited until the very last day, you’d waved him off at the airport with a smile then as soon as he was out of sight, you had burst into tears. The people around you had wondered what the hell was wrong and some woman who reminded you of your old school teacher had called your dad to fetch you since you were in no fit state to drive.
“Sweetheart?”
You made some noise that resembled yeah and your dad opened your bedroom door.
“You can take a day off today,” he said softly. “Calum and the boys are in and I know—”
You sat up at the mention the band. Maybe this was your chance to prove to yourself that you weren’t still in love with Cal, but with who he used to be and that version of him would have been lost, scattered across the countries he’d visited on the tour.
“No, I’ll come in,” you said with a sigh. “I can’t hide from my ex-boyfriend forever, Dad.”
“That’s my girl,” he said before he closed the door, leaving you to work out exactly how the hell you were going to go from ignoring Calum’s existence to being in the same room as him within the next few hours.
–
You kept your eyes down as the guys set up. You’d already had a near miss with Calum when he asked if anybody knew how to play bass and one of your dad’s colleagues had pointed at you like he was doing you a favour. You had managed to duck out of the way before Calum got a good look at you. You were suddenly grateful that you’d changed your hairstyle since he didn’t seem to catch on to it being you. So you found your seat next to your dad and tried to be interested in the dials and mixers he was using. You had been doing well so far, none of the other guys had noticed you yet and you could continue mentally screaming about how you were over Calum despite how your heart was beating.
“Are you alright there, sweetheart? You’ve hardly said two words all morning,” your dad pointed out quietly.
“I’m okay,” you said quickly when you saw Calum looking over in your general direction. “Do you want coffee? I’ll go on the coffee run.”
You knew it was the wrong time and no liquids were allowed in the studio but you needed to get out of the room. It felt like it was closing in on you and the oxygen was slowly been sucked out. You pushed your chair away before your dad could ask what was wrong and dived out of the room. Your feet moved quickly down the corridor, the heels of your boots echoed as you tried to find somewhere that felt less like Calum. You gave up and sat on the bottom step of the stairs then let your face rest in your hands.
Why hadn’t you taken your father’s offer for the day off? A year on and you still weren’t over the boy who could make you laugh until tears fell down your face or the boy who had taken you for your first tattoo. Just the memory of him grinning at you as you cursed the tattoo needle was enough to make you want to cry. Every time you saw the bloody thing, you smiled as your mind cast itself back to how he’d kissed it every single day. But it also made you want to cry because every part of that tattoo screamed Calum when you least needed it to. You could still imagine what his fingertips tracing the outline felt like. You missed his calloused hand being in yours and how he had smiled at you like you were in on the joke he hadn’t told yet.
“Hey, do you know which way the café is?”
You froze and stared at the floor tiles. You were hearing things, that had to be it. But the toes of his black converse made their way into your line of vision.
“Are you alright?” Calum asked. “I know you don’t know me – you probably just think I’m some guy from a band and you’re probably not going to want to talk to me – but I’m good at listening. I listen to Luke when he’s drunk and he never makes any sense.”
It was how he sat next to you and how familiar he still was to you that threw you off. You sighed, there was no way you could pretend to be somebody else anymore. You bit your lip before deciding what you were going to do.
“My ex-boyfriend and his band are here today.”
“Oh shit, that – wait – fuck, I thought it was you!” Calum said in amazement when you finally looked up. “I never thought I’d see you again.”
You laughed and brushed your hair back from your face with your hand.
“Hey, Cal. How’s tricks?”
“Fuck me this is weird,” he muttered before smiling at you. “It’s been different, things have been pretty wild and all I’ve wanted to do is tell you about them.”
“You could have still called me, Cal. We broke up because of distance not because we hate each other.”
He nodded slowly as he played with his hands. “I guess I didn’t want to make it any harder.”
“It was like you’d died,” you said bluntly. “You were there one day and not the next. All it would have taken was a text message from either of us. God, we fucked up this breakup.”
You started laughing and Calum joined in. It felt normal, almost as if nothing had changed. But it had, nothing stayed the same forever. You knew Calum had probably picked up some new habits or quips you didn’t know about. You had, you’d started drinking your tea with two sugars and you no longer stayed up until the early hours of the morning now there was no sweaty bassist crawling into your bed.
“I’m seeing somebody new,” Calum announced suddenly. “Shit, sorry, I could have said that with a lot more tact.”
Your heart sank and you tried to smile. “That’s good, what are they like?”
“She’s one of the crew, it’s Sophie if you remember her?” he said vaguely. “It’s not serious or anything. She knows how it is.”
“Don’t downplay it for my benefit, Cal. I’m a big girl now, I can take it,” you lied then you smiled and said the only bit of truth. “I want you to be happy.”
You knew that the day would come when Calum would find somebody else but you never thought you’d know the girl. Sophie was a sweet girl but you couldn’t help the jealousy that crept in without invitation.
Calum stared at you and tried to work out how you were feeling. There was a time he was able to read you like an open book but he realised that you’d become guarded in the last year, you were less willing to show people how you felt.
“What about you? How’s the gap year going?” he asked to steer away from the awkwardness.
“I’ve been working here and trying to work out how you get over somebody,” you admitted with a sigh. “You’re a tough guy to get over, Hood.”
You fell back into a silence so you got up and stared out of the window down at the busy city streets. You wanted to ask if him dating again meant that he felt okay but the words got stuck in your throat and it felt like you were choking on them.
“We were good together,” he said like it was going to help.
“Yeah,” you mumbled. “Look, you better go back. You’ve got a Live Lounge to do and I’ve got a milkshake in the café calling my name.”
“You’re not going to stick around to hear us?” he asked when he stood up to join you.
You shook your head with a faint smile. “No, the last time I heard you guys play live, it was the first show of your tour and back when things were good between us. And if it’s all the same to you, I’d like to keep it the memory of that left how it is.”

Oh my god but Calum would TOTALLY be into going down on a girl like can you imagine ugh he would just dive in like it was a fucking snack and you would grab fistfuls of his hair and he would let out these grunts every time and it would legitimately be a full-body experience for him like his face would be buried between your thighs and his arms (*sweats* hiS Ar mS) would be wrapped around your legs and he would be using his legs to propel his tongue even further inside you and his back muscles would be RiPpl i nG and he wouldn’t even stop when he made you cum he would just keep going and going until you were shaking all over and begging him to let you rest but he LOVES how much you squirm underneath him like ugh it would be such a power trip for him and he would tease you the whole way with shit like “already shaking, baby girl, but I bet you’d cum again for me, wouldn’t you?” And “such a good girl, quivering for me” and fucking hell I want a calum I deserve it

It took a while for Calum to get used to the idea you were gone from his life. He never thought the day would come but it had, three months into the tour. You had called and broke down in tears about how it was too hard. Calum had longed for the words to say it’d be okay if you could just hold on for another few months. But you’d choked out that you couldn’t, the heartache was too bad.
Don’t waste your time on me, Cal.
He still thought about you a lot. The final words you’d said before you had ended the call were constantly echoing in his mind. You had been his everything but he understood why you had done it. He had heard the badly masked sadness in your voice whenever you asked about the tour. He’d noticed how you always said you wouldn’t keep him from the fun, he noticed when you’d faked the smiles on the pictures you sent him while pretending to carry on like you weren’t breaking.
“Cal?” Michael said through the darkness on the tour bus. “What are you doing awake? We’ve got shit to do tomorrow.”
He sat down on the sofa opposite Calum and waited for some kind of bullshit excuse about not being tired.
“You’re thinking about her again, aren’t you?” Michael asked.
Cal nodded slowly then looked down at the floor.
“It’ll get easier,” he promised him but even Michael didn’t believe his own words. “She’ll be a distant memory.”
“I love her, Mike.”
“I know you do. It fucking sucks that you can’t just get on a plane and go back to her. Maybe then she wouldn’t feel so bad about the length of the tour.”
As soon as Michael had said it, he knew he shouldn’t have. Calum picked up his phone and started typing to find the nearest airport.
“Christ, Calum, I didn’t mean it,” he said quickly. “We’re touring, we’ve got shows and – you know what, fuck it. Go get your girl, Cal.”
