A sculptor and conceptual artist known for his contemporary twists on traditional furniture, Michael Beitz has been exhibited at galleries around the globe. Michael Beitz’ background includes several years as a fine woodworker under the tutelage of a preeminent post-war American furniture artist. Mr. Beitz takes that sense of rigorous craftsmanship and translates it into the contemporary art medium, exploring core issues such as isolation and intimacy between those who share space together. His unique creations include a picnic bench that spills over a railing, a sofa knotted in the middle, and a long wood table that takes a turn in the middle. One of Mr. Beitz’ commissioned works in 2019 was “Just Wait,” a wood bench with upholstery that was created for the K11 Museum in Hong Kong. The previous year, he created a pair of permanent public works, “Gather” and “Blue Line,” for the University of Colorado. Michael Beitz has received numerous grants over the years, including the prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts Grant.
