in the ballroom, post plot drop
full post can be found here if ya nasty
chaos unwrapped the ballroom like the first gift on christmas morning, tearing at it like a dog bearing teeth - and thomas hopper was close enough to reach.
lucky him.
“where is he, baron?”
the title came first because titles were useful cages. she pushed him toward a clearer patch of floor - away from both the girl and the chaos- not hard enough to make a scene but firmly enough to remind him that she could. her shoulders stayed squared for one beat too long, eyes narrowing in accusation.
then she let the blade disappear.
“tom.”
her voice was soft now. delicate. almost sweet, if you didn’t know any better. mey leaned in close enough that he would have to decide whether to step back or listen, and she has not yet learned the man’s behavior to know which way he would go. her lashes lowered, her mouth tilted, and she twisted her face into a smile that was common now as it settled over her like a second skin.
the pain dragged through her again. her vision blurred at the edges, but she did not blink. she let him look at her smile instead. was she frightened, furious, flirting, or all three? that was for someone else to guess.
for now she just needed information - and she would be asking everyone this time.
location: the center of the ballroom
time: the center of the chaos
the lighting in the room shifted first, like someone had decided to play with the dimmer.
the rest came down like a crash.
it didn’t feel dramatic, not at first. there was no thunderclap or godly announcement from the ceiling - only a brief, unnatural flicker across the chandeliers, gold turning green at the edges before the ballroom seemed to inhale and forget how to let it out. meyra noticed because she always noticed, not because the change itself had been clear.
searing pain found her and it felt like that had been the goal. it hooked beneath her ribs with the familiarity of a past lover and the cruel reminder that she did not belong to herself. her breath caught halfway, trapped behind her teeth, and for a moment the room sharpened into fragments - a glass stem snapping between nervous fingers and candlelight trembling over faces that had not yet understood why they were afraid. they were afraid because what seemed liked decorative armor was now coming after them. they were afraid because they knew, as always, it would be more than what meets the eye.
around her, the summer solstice ball unraveled with a certain cinematic grace. screams rose through it as champagne spilled over marble and once silent knights now charged the floor. she heard a laugh to her right, sharp and disbelieving, before terror corrected the person who chose that moment to run in any direction but forward. the entire room glittered as it panicked, which felt strangely fitting. people loved romanticizing disaster until disaster put its filthy hands on them.
and still, somehow, the worst of it passed around mey like a silent observer.
she was not spared, of course. spared sounded tender and considerate to the fact that she was in the room. mey never trusted softness when it came without teeth, not with the type of men she was surrounded by these days. whatever this was had looked at her, ripped out a piece of her chest, and moved on - and that unsettled her more than being struck further might have. it felt too easy. it felt like there was more to come.
before she knew it, a princess turned fish and hit the center of the ballroom floor with a violent thud – and there was no elegant way to witness a body become a punishment. one moment, the woman stood tall on two feet. the next, a tail appeared where a girl’s escape should have been. scales flashed under the fluorescent lights with a cruel sort of beauty, and mey hated that she noticed it.
her chest throbbed again, answering the curse like one secret recognizing another. whatever was happening to that girl would not leave her any time soon.
mey doubled over as if on cue.
the who quickly became the only question worth asking. not the loudest question, of course. the loudest questions belonged to people with softer lives. why is this happening? who did this? can anyone help? meyra had never had much use for questions that begged the universe to be kind. she preferred the sharper ones, anyway - questions that punched you in the gut. who benefited? who panicked too late? who looked at the damage and saw possibility?
wild eyes scanned the room as she reached in all directions for an answer.
meyra saw the bartender girl before her real target.
young. brunette. unassuming in the fatal way people were when they thought unassuming meant harmless. there was something about her that set meyra’s teeth on edge, a bright, reckless uncertainty dressed up as courage. she had the look of someone standing too close to a locked door with a key she had not earned. mey had seen that look before.
gods help them all, she had worn it more than once.
she moved before intrigue could soften into hesitation - slipped between the brunette and the man to her left with the ease of a woman who had been mistaken for decoration one too many times. the ache under her ribs sharpened as she passed, white hot and unforgiving. whether hades had made this mess or merely inspired it, the pain knew his shape. that was enough for her.
and now? thomas hopper was close enough to reach.
lucky him.
