I've always found weird that Scarlet used Peril as an arena champion, rather then a soldier in her army. You would expect that having Peril on the battlefield would make the Skywing army fearsome and nigh invincible, thu boosting Burn's influence on Pyrrhia.
Do you have a personal explenation for that?

Scarlet's decision to withhold Peril from the battlefield does make some tactical sense to me.
Peril is indeed overwhelmingly powerful--in a one-on-one fight she is nigh unbeatable, barring some kind of rare edge case like a fire-proof Mudwing. But that power is only situationally useful, for two reasons:
Peril is as dangerous to her allies as she is to her enemies.
Therefore, she can only safely utilize her full combat potential in situations where no friendlies can get in the way.
Wars usually aren't won by a single soldier. It's an infernal engine that eats bodies and wastes an unfathomable amount of lives. That's why they are so terrifying in real life.

Peril doesn't really work in this context. You can't put her into a battalion or send soldiers with her to support her because if she lets loose, she is likely to wipe out her teammates in addition to her enemies. And while Scarlet is ruthless enough to perhaps kill one or two soldiers to prove a point, I don't think she would be stupid enough to incinerate entire platoons on the regular. She doesn't have infinite bodies, and doing that would leave her kingdom weakened.
So if you have to send Peril into battle, you pretty much have to send her alone.
But that isn't really feasible either. Peril is fearsome and powerful, but she is not invincible. If you get some enemy general who is crafty enough, they could feasibly engineer some situation in which Peril dies. And even without that, if you send Peril out to fight 100 soldiers, one of them could get lucky and get a shot in while the other 99 are whittling her down. There are just too many unknown variables that could collectively spell Peril's demise.
And the other thing is: Once Peril goes down, things are going to get complicated. If she is incapacitated, you can't really pick her up and transport her to a medical facility. She is very distinctly non-portable, which Kestrel's face can likely attest to. If she's conscious, she might be able to cauterize her own wounds. If that's not enough, there are no bandages or tourniquets you can put on her. It's over.
Scarlet looked at all this and forewent sending one of her most valuable assets into a situation where she could easily lose it. That makes sense to me. So she instead put Peril in the arena, which gives Scarlet a number of benefits, namely:
The arena is a very favorable environment for Peril because she only takes part in fights where everyone is against her. This allows Peril to use the full suite of her abilities without wasting Scarlet's resources.
Scarlet can rig the fights and control exactly whom Peril faces, how many opponents there are, and what resources are available to them, meaning there is very little risk to Peril.
By controlling the battle environment, Scarlet can cultivate Peril's image of being an invincible monstrosity under her control and use her as a fear deterrent to keep her detractors in line.
If someone decides to make an attempt on Scarlet's life, Peril is right there to intercept and deliver burning retribution. This dis-incentivizes further assassination attempts.
It creates an entertaining spectacle for Scarlet to watch. This is the most important benefit for her.
And lastly, the final reason why Scarlet doesn't use Peril in the war effort: She doesn't really have to. Scarlet isn't invested in Burn dominating the continent, she's just entertaining an alliance of convenience because if Burn wins, Burn will owe her a favor, and also she can use Burn's agenda as momentum to strike at her immediate enemies (the Seawings). She doesn't have to give 100% of herself to Burn's cause, it's enough to just vaguely help Burn whenever their interests align.
And Burn doesn't really want Scarlet to win the war for her either. Burn wants to personally hold Blister's head and feel her sister's skull crack in her talons. Then she wants to sit back in an enemy general's remains and slurp cognac out of a cup made from an Icewing's tail. This war thing is fun for her, she doesn't want a super dragon to end it faster.
No, what she wants from Scarlet is for her to take prisoners and send weird crap for the Weirdling tower collection. And sometimes just a place to hang out and relax, preferably by watching bones being broken and hides being set on fire. That's how Peril can best service Burn.
Because if you think about it, by the time the series starts, Burn has pretty much already won the war-part of the war. Burn controls the Sand Kingdom, she lives in her mother's old place and she is the one who holds that territory. Nobody is able to challenge her for it via means of conquest. Blaze and Blister are both living in exile and trying to weasel back into the kingdom on technicalities (Blister through assassination attempts and a secret alliance with the Nightwings, and Blaze (or rather Glacier) via finding the Eye of Onyx). Burn only still has to worry about them because they might pull some legalistic gotcha. Her militaristic dominion is thoroughly secure.
So this is why, in my opinion, Scarlet didn't use Peril in the war. It would have been impractical by wasting manpower, posed too much of a risk to Peril herself, and wouldn't have improved her standing with Burn as Burn already had the war well under control.
This was a wonderful analysis! I also believe another reason Scarlet kept Peril close enough to her, rather than deploying her in the Skywing Army is that Peril is a highly volatile asset to her, and keeping Peril close to her allows her to oversee and manipulate Peril better. She deliberately feeds and keeps Peril stuck in this cycle.
Peril kills a prisoner ---> Majority of Skywings fear her and thus avoid her ----> Peril remains isolated and lonely ----> Therefore when Scarlet talks and gives the impression of listening to Peril, she affirms this belief in Peril's perception that she's the one whose got the best of her interests at heart ----> Thus Peril listens to Scarlet and remains her weapon.
Scarlet through the lies she told Peril built a narrative in Peril's perception that with the exception of Queen Scarlet, everybody would eventually leave or hate her on sight due to her powers and only she accepts Peril.
The more attachments Peril formed, the more at risk Scarlet's manipulations became, and even if (hypothetically) Peril were to join the army, she'd get attached ( We know how quickly she latched onto Clay since he was the rare ones who'd actually listen to her ). Thus Scarlet kept her close.

Still chipping away at a Tsunami design I’m happy with. And her boyfriend’s here, too (and a smaller, earlier conceptual version of him). They’re a little too similar looking for my liking, so I’ll probably revisit Riptide and sharpen him up. I had another design for him I had forgotten about so I’ll probably merge the two.
Trying to lean into the “flowy” design motif for Tsunami, so her linework is supposed to be swept back and smooth. Riptide is supposed to have more of a jagged feel (riptide just feels like a jagged word to me), but he still has some friendly roundness to him. In the future, I want to make his horns sharper and his ‘hair’ a little more loose and playful looking. Yes, I did give him a little eyebrow notch.
