Japanese courts have a 99% conviction rate. In essence, if you are accused of a crime you are already considered to be guilty and it is up to you to prove otherwise if you can. Remember in the end of Persona 5, where the person who falsely accused you of assaulting them confessed to everything on national television but you were still in prison until your friends tracked down every witness and got them all the recant their testimonies individually? That was in no way exaggerated.
Also Japanese police have a 90+% rate of successfully arresting a âsuspectâ for every crime they investigate. At first this sounds really impressive, how they always track down the criminal, until you realize that they do it through a combination of refusing to investigate crimes which seem hard to solve or are likely to involve organizes crime or politicians (lots of âsuicidesâ and âaccidentsâ which are very blatant murder), and any time they do open a case but fail to figure everything out in the first day or two they just grab a convenient scapegoat (usually poor, frequently an immigrant or ethnic minority).
There are also very few restrictions on how long you can be âinterrogatedâ for after arrest, or what they can do to you during the interrogation. Almost all the accused confess to everything... eventually. Regardless of whether they were actually anywhere near the incident in question.
Yeah no, death note was also about how fuck up japanese police are. The reason the death note causes people to have heart attacks if you dont put a cause of death is because thats the go to excuse cops use if they dont want to investigate a case or cant solve it fast enough. Ok I know this has been said but
I think another good thing I came to realize was that, in therapy, "acceptance" doesn't mean that something is okay or good. To accept a situation or emotion means to understand that any amount of wishing it didnt happen, pretending it isn't happening, or regressing into maladaptive coping mechanisms will not effectively deal with what's going on. To accept is to acknowledge, to understand what is happening or what you're feeling and cope appropriately and healthily without self-judgement.

However little sense its actual plot makes, I think Breaking Bad is a fun case study in diegetic genre dissonance. Itâs basically a show about a guy who responds to the looming spectre of his own mortality by becoming the villain from a particularly moralistic Saturday morning cartoon, and somehow it works for him, at least for a while, but heâs the only one who gets to play by Saturday morning cartoon rules, leaving everyone around him to deal with the realistic fallout from his Scooby-Doo bullshit.
Thesis: both Breaking Bad and Hannibal are operating within essentially the same âone guy gets to play by Saturday morning cartoon rules while everybody else has to deal with the realistic fallout from their Scooby-Doo bullshitâ meta-genre; the critical difference between the two shows is that Hannibal Lecter is specifically playing by Bugs Bunny rules, while Walter White is Daffy Duck.

Yâall, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think thereâs so many âmean girlsâ in these fields is because theyâre all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. Thereâs assholes everywhere.
We get it. Your job isnât like other girlsâ jobs. Itâs a cool job.
itâs true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.
itâs also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.
Thatâs absolutely missing the point.
While those are all âhelperâ professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, thatâs not an incompatible idea), theyâre also ones that involve power over vulnerable peopleâs lives. (And Iâve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, itâs not like men arenât being mentioned here.)
Secretaries/administrative assistants arenât on that list for a reason. Flight attendants arenât on that list. Housecleaners arenât on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. Thatâs not a list of pink collar jobs. Itâs specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people youâre relatively likely to get away with it.
It can both be true that ânurses who care for disabled people need better payâ and ânurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and thatâs something worth talking about.â
Women arenât immune from treating people badly because theyâre women, or because women are underpaid. Theyâre sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.
