not because he doesn’t trust him, but because sirius is terrified of what those thoughts say about him.

i think sirius grew up surrounded by cruelty to the point where it became a language he understands instinctively. so when he’s furious at someone, there are moments where his mind immediately jumps to violence. moments where he imagines using crucio or lacero on people. moments where he thinks about using the kind of power his family used. and then he hates himself for it.

because the worst part isn’t that he knows cruelty exists, but it’s that some part of him understands it. how do you tell someone that sometimes, when you’re angry enough, you think about doing terrible things to people? especially when you’ve been on the receiving end of those things. especially when you know exactly how fear, humiliation, and powerlessness feel. especially when your entire life has been spent trying not to become the people who raised you.

i think sirius spends a lot of time convincing himself he’s different from his family, while quietly noticing all the ways they’re still inside him.

because he hates pure-blood supremacy, but he still carries the arrogance he was raised with. he hates his family’s obsession with power, but he’s not above using the influence, knowledge, and confidence that came from being a Black. he can be generous and fiercely loyal, but he can also be judgmental, self-righteous, and convinced he’s right before anyone else has even spoken.

i think his internal monologue is meaner than he’d ever admit. i think he writes people off. i think he looks down on people. i think he lashes out when he’s hurt. i think he blames other people when things go wrong. and then afterward he feels awful about it but has absolutely no idea how to repair the damage, so he just sits with the guilt and hopes it disappears on its own.

sirius is not secretly evil and he is not actually his family, but escaping the environment that shaped you doesn’t mean it stops shaping you.
