Elain

As Azriel had said, the rain started to fall down faster, the sound of the water hitting the front window filled the car, and she was glad of the sound because she didn’t know what she would do once he asked the question hanging in the air.

So she remained silent as he did, the rain accompanying them along, but soon he broke the silence. “Where do you want me to drop you off?”

Where did she want to go? Home wasn't an option at the moment. Feyre's maybe? But she knew as soon as she appeared at her doorstep, Feyre would start to ask and ask and ask, and she wasn't in the mood to answer questions. The same went for Nesta’s, and she knew Nesta would be furious, marching over to her house and killing Lucien or worse.

Guilt was a heavy feeling, it ate a person from inside out, hanging in the background to pull the mood down whenever a happy moment presented itself.

She didn't know what had come over her. One moment they were standing in that dimly lit bathroom and the next second…she’d lost all control.

What the hell had she done? She thought to herself as she sat across from Lucien one week after that accident. And yes, she was going to take it as an accident. Nothing more nothing less. An accident that happened and shall never be repeated again.

Azriel

The brown eyes that looked like a doe haunted him all week, his dreams restless with her in them. While he was awake, he would search her name, trying to find a glimpse into her life, trying to learn anything about what she was doing at the moment. He was well and truly addicted at the first sight of her.

His hand reached out to his phone again, wanting to see if she had posted anything since he’d last looked—fifteen minutes. But all he’d come across were the old photos, which he had memorized every single detail in them.

The house was cold as she let herself in, an emptiness so loud it filled everywhere with its presence. She didn’t need to call Lucien to find out he wasn’t there. Maybe at work…maybe…she didn’t want to think about that. As she always did, she put away the thought in a tiny box in her mind, not to be messed with so it couldn't mess with her mind.

She didn’t know when they’d started to drift so far apart but it happened slowly and now she realized she didn’t even know when was the last time they ate dinner together. Always one of them coming home earlier than the other and eating without waiting, existing in the same place but never crossing each other's lines, and even if they did, it was filled with an awkwardness she didn’t know how to break. So they let it get bigger and bigger and now there was an invisible wall where each knew not to cross. A wall so big it would take days to climb and even then the drop would be so fast, they couldn't even recover.

She was supposed to be sleeping, but sleep found her so little these days, her dreams tangled with thorns and ivies, dragging her down to the bottomless black, where no light could survive.

As she made her way to the stairs, the silent argument from Rhys’ study pulled her attention and without thinking for a second, she found herself at the doorway, having a glance inside.

She could make out Rhysand’s backside as he stared at the fire, his face hard with determination. Not wanting to listen if it was a private meeting, she slowly pulled back, but at that moment the other person in the room with Rhysand spoke, and she stopped in her tracks—Azriel.
