Sheriff Balinor Emrys was a force to be reckoned with until the night he didn't come home from a secret rendezvous. Vowing to find his father's killer, Merlin takes up the badge, becoming sheriff of the small Montana town of Griffin Creek. Seven years later, he is still no closer to finding the man responsible for his pa's murder. Somehow Mayor Cenred Davenport and local rancher Uther Pendragon were involved, but without proof, his hands were tied.

Then one day, his deputy warns him that the Pendragon Gang has been spotted heading for Griffin Creek. Led by none other than outlaw Arthur Pendragon, the son of Uther, the gang was notorious for cattle rustling, bar brawls, robbery, and generally stirring up trouble wherever they went. Determined to protect the townspeople, he confronts them the moment they ride into town only to find himself inexplicably drawn to the charismatic leader. Jolley Bridge, Ireland, a tiny little village on the rugged western coast of the Emerald Isle, population two hundred and one, the one being Arthur Pendragon. After the death of his mother, he has returned to the place that meant so much to her. The Sea Rose Bed and Breakfast now belonged to him, and he would have to decide whether to take over the running of it or sell it and go back to his hectic life in London. He has so many fond memories of the place as a young boy, one of which always stayed with him…the scared dark-haired little boy he met briefly in the woods near the Dragan Point Lighthouse before he vanished. He still wondered what ever happened to him, and who he was. The answer just might be the young man he sees working at the lighthouse, but when he investigates he finds a cantankerous old hermit of a lightkeeper named Emrys who hates outsiders and locals alike and refuses to answer any of his questions. While returning from an early morning trip to garner herbs for Gaius, Merlin stumbles into a trap meant for Arthur. Arthur rushes to his side, telling his father that he will not allow Merlin to die. Further incurring Uther’s wrath by declaring his true feelings for his servant in front of the entire court.

Desperate to be rid of Merlin and to free Arthur of whatever enchantment the boy has over his son, Uther has him kidnapped and taken far from Camelot. That is until Arthur Pendragon offers him a seat on his plane which is preparing to depart for Seattle. Merlin accepts, despite the fact that their fathers had a significant falling out years ago, and hate each other. The two strike up an immediate friendship which is put to the test when the plane drops out of the sky in a very remote area of the Alaskan Wilderness. The sole survivors of the crash, Arthur and Merlin must rely on each other for survival and their bond grows into something neither of them expected.
