skinny dipping // sabrina carpenter
you'll say, "how's your family? how's your sister?" i'll say, "shannon's being shannon" after a minute of nonsensical chatter, you'll say "well, this was really nice, maybe we should do this on purpose sometime" and it'll have been long enough that we won't harp on arguments in your garage, all the ways we sabotaged it (hmm-mmm), what it was and what it wasn't. it'd be so nice, right? right? if we could take it all off and just exist and skinny dip in water under the bridge. you'll suggest a restaurant we used to go to, and i'll say, "won't that be too nostalgic?" and you'll say, "maybe, but let's do it anyway. we won't sit at our same old table, i promise and we won't bring up the past, we'll keep it bureaucratic" and we won't say it, but both of us, we'll be thinking about how different we are

"The way that sound so good," Sprite and fruit punch, fizzy with some good flavour to it, "you know I'm absolutely going to try it. You're like...so clever when it comes to world things, 'cause I never would have thought to try all that. I'm gonna need a list, like a big list of all the things I should try."
In a weird way, being around the guy was a confidence boost, so at least there was that. "Not sure I have a list like that handy, but I can give you the ideas as I think of them," She offered, turning to pull open the door to the store as they finally arrived.
Billie nodded her head with an exaggerated expression of disappointment, eyes closed as if the very thought haunted her as she waved her hand. It was almost amusing how the other actually just stopped mid-slice lift, but Billie knew it was warranted. She couldn't even remember who had said it or where she'd read it, but she had been rumbled for sure! "Now that's a million dollar question right there." It was mumbled, almost to herself, before she got totally caught up in the world of stationary.
"Innovation awards, huh?" Now that sounded like something right up Billie's alley. Sure, she wasn't a stationary expert, but she definitely had a soft spot for reading about the latest leaps in mechanics. When electric cars had become more common, she'd read about lithium-ion batteries for six nights straight. "That's pretty fucking genius, actually. Super stamps for the ultimate package. Not that I know the last time I used a stamp." She smiled sheepishly and pulled a piece of crust off her current slice. "You know so much cool stuff, by the way. And you work in a pizza place. That's awesome."
"Oh, no, same. I don't even know if I'm fully equipped to send a letter off anymore. Like, who does that enough to remember how to do that anymore? Whoever they are, they're more equipped than I am. That's for certain," She couldn't help the laugh that escaped her at the thought.
The compliment caught her off guard, though, and Briar's eyes widened while her cheeks flushed. Her first instinct was to laugh, eyes darting down to the slice of pizza she'd set down on her plate in favor of picking the extra slices of crispy, greasy pepperoni off of it. "I don't know that most people would consider that awesome. My parents consider it wasted potential, actually." She laughed again, trying to ignore the sting.

At least Myles had the decency to appear sheepish as Evangeline gave them that look. "I like the ice cream, alright?" he said almost defensively. At her questions they let out a long sigh, taking a moment to scoop more ice cream into their mouth in favor of answering right.
"Well, it fucking sucks," he eventually settled on. "She tells me she misses me but then says she has a boyfriend and shit's serious. Wouldn't even take me up on me being her dirty little mistress." A scowl made its way to their lips. "And I can't just move on. I've been trying for a year and I'm still painting her fucking eyes like a lovestruck idiot. Mason would've got a kick from it." Evangeline always was one of the only people Myles was ever honest with. Well, that and their twin.
Okay, well, add that to the list of things that she didn't want to know about her brother. Still, they were opening up to her and Evangeline wasn't going to turn off the faucet. "You do deserve better than being someone's... mistress," She assured him. "You aren't an idiot. You're feeling things. Feelings are complicated. Do you know what it is that has you so fixated on her?"
Lizzie nodded, shrugging at the follow up question. "I mean, yeah. But they deserved it. Or I had to, cuz Petr told me it'd help." She didn't see the problem with either of these things.
Slowly Unity nodded in return, though they weren't quite understanding. Or maybe they were, but it was a bit hard to believe. "And who is Petr?"
His own expression turned more neutral as he mulled over Arturo's words. "So then why did you change statements the second time? Help me understand, please. Someone died, Mr. Barrera. Shouldn't his family have closure?"
"So, the family must have hired you then, right? Since you're so worried about their closure," Arturo shot back, crossing his arms over his chest, still unmoving. "Or, let me guess. You're an out of towner looking for a story. That it?"
โOh, that would definitely be a tourism trap,โ Oliver agreed with a chuckle. โFamily compound is a good way to put it. Itโs nice, knowing theyโre just a short walk away.โ With a thoughtful look, he glanced around at the scattered party decorations for a moment. โCan I get you anything?โ he asked Zoja. โA drink? Plate of fries? Packed house tonight, but still have plenty of food left. All that inventory preparation really came in handy.โ The holiday season was always busy, per usual, but the bar tended to prepare for times like that.
"I can imagine. It's nice you're that close to them," Zoja agreed. To have a support system like that, in good times and in bad, it meant absolutely everything. She knew that better than most. The offer made her smile, and she hummed as she considered her options. "You know, some fries do sound really good. If you're willing to share them with me, that is."
He does nearly break at her faux innocence, so it's very, very, very lucky for him that Violet seems to have more willpower than him. "Yes. Traffic." Jaren says it with a teasing tone, like he's struggling to get Violet to focus. Still, he pushes off her doorframe and starts walking backwards towards the elevators with a grin. "You can't ever say I wasn't a gentleman," Jaren informs her as he very chivalrously presses the elevator call button. -- Once they're pulling out of the parking lot, Jaren rests one arm over the passenger seat headrest as he glances behind them, a strange habit for a man fully capable of using his backup camera. "If I give you control of the aux, are you going to let it go to your head?"
Shamefully enough, Violet did find the gesture to be attractive, though it's not something she would dare to admit out loud to Jaren. Instead, she very bravely shot him a cocky little smirk that made it very obvious that yes, she would indeed let it go to her head.
"Who, me? Of course not. Never in a million years... but if I did, I think you'd like that anyway," She accused, already looking away to open Spotify and browse through her playlists before looking back at him with raised brows. "C'mon. Be a good boy and let me pick. You know you wanna." She teased, grinning.

His eyes widened. "No way! Nothing's more important than tu culo!" Santiago was being absolutely genuine. He bit his lip, feeling guilty for ignoring Violet when they were supposed to be hanging out. "Lo siento Violita. I just..." a sigh as he considered what to say. To explain what was going on in his head. "Have you...ever cared a fuck ton about someone but know you can't ever have them?"
Violet sighed dramatically. "And they say romance is dead," She teased, though her smile slowly dropped upon hearing what was actually bothering him. "Uh. I mean, that's heavy. Not really? But I hate not having what I want so I guess I can sympathize there," She offered, shifting forward. "Why can't you have them?"
He couldn't help the snort of amusement as he shook his head. "Aren't you an influencer or something like that? Papa's wisdom might have missed a few key steps." Shaking his head, Edgar's smile turned warmer. "How have you been Violet? Still deciding if the move was worth it?"
"Yeah, well, maybe I just had a rebellious streak or something," Violet argued with a shrug off her shoulders, unable to stop herself from smirking. Influencer wasn't totally accurate but it wasn't as if he knew that. "You could say that. What about you?"
His brows furrowed in confusion. "Who's Doug? Although I certainly appreciate his high praise." Edgar chuckled at Briar's own question. "Instead of hiding out you can meet with other aspiring writers, bounce ideas off of one another, keep each other motivated and on task. Doesn't that sound better than struggling alone in a dark room?"
"Oh, shit. Right, my bad. Forgot you're still learning names and everything," Briar cursed, letting out an awkward little laugh. "He's my boss, he owns the pizza place here. Kinda weird, older guy? Talks like a cartoon character. Talking about Doug was easy, the subject of her writing, however, not so much. She chewed at her lower lip, brow furrowing some as she considered Edgar's offer. "I guess, yeah. Maybe not so... lonely?"
Angelo can't help but laugh as he's dragged into the house. "Some would call this kidnapping," he teases, and he still manages a frozen grin. There's genuine warmth that comes from visiting his favorite people, so he really barely feels the cold at all. "Oh my goodness, hot cocoa sounds lovely, but only if it isn't too much trouble. I could help make it? I think I might have a little extra cinnamon on me. O-oh, do you want me to set this all in the kitchen first?"
"Of course you'd have a little extra cinnamon on you. Always prepared," Zoja teased in response, not at all doubting that it might in fact be true. Instead, she raised her brows at him and continued to usher him further into the house. "What I want you to do is settle in, relax, and warm up a little. I've got it."
Kayla lifted a brow as she dumped the items from her pockets onto a small container on the counter. "I'll survive, but are you okay? And don't lie." She tilted her head to the container in Carmen's lap. "Pints of ice cream are a universal cry for help. Or you're pregnant. Or both."
"We could always order pizza," Carmen offered, already reaching for her phoneโuntil the question fully processed and she couldn't stop herself from making a face, her gaze falling to the ice cream in her lap before looking back towards Kayla. "I'm totally fine! Not pregnant, definitely not pregnant. Just... really craving ice cream! In a not pregnant way."

Edgar nodded, his own smile forming at the familiar company. "It's beautiful here. And the residents are good conversationalists," he winked playfully. "Speaking of, here to chat or looking for anything in particular?" Edgar closed his own book, setting it aside on the counter so he could give Unity his full attention.
"I hadn't gotten that impression about the residents. It is beautiful, though," Unity mused, walking further into the bookshop as they spoke to Edgar. "I'm mostly browsing, though I won't turn down a conversation with you. It's nice to talk to a like-minded individual."
She shrugged at her niece's comment. "Look, this sounds horrible, but I know I'm better than most of the people at this bar. I'm rich, intelligent, successful, worldly, hot. I'm a catch and they better damn well know it too. And the same goes for you, Ev. Anyone in this whole town should consider themselves lucky enough to have to courage to talk to you." It was funny, despite her own battles with depression Christine still had a fairly strong ego. Perhaps it just came with being a Hale.
She eyed Evangeline up and down. "Tell me three good things about yourself: go."
It wasn't as if Evangeline hated herself, really, she'd just never found herself to be particularly special. She'd never stood out, though part of that was due to her fear of standing out. She did think the world of her aunt, thoughโshe just couldn't apply that to herself. The question made her pause, though, holding her drink and blinking owlishly at Christine. "I don't..." She blanked, flushing. She could do that, surely! "I... I think I'm kind, and caring, and thoughtful?" It came out more like a question than she intended for it to.
