Cassian started out as a traumatised and selfish young man who loved a select few. Sometimes he made bad choices, all too often others chose for him. Slowly, the circle of people he cares about expands. He also finds hope in the midst of loss and conflict and wants to make a Home with the love of his life.

But that was never meant for him.

Sometimes the decisions others make for us help shape our path in life, whether we like it or not.

The Messenger is finally where he needs to be. The centre of the rebellion. In this beautiful shot – the symbol.

Mike is Pontius Pilate.

The Pharisees demand that Jesus must die to protect their power, like Gus demands Nacho’s death to save his own skin. Jesus, like Nacho, agrees to be sacrificed, but in the name of love instead of power.

Pontius Pilate thought they were both crazy. He doesn’t see the point in killing Jesus, who hasn’t really done anything worthy of crucifixion. Mike also doesn’t want to kill Nacho. He tells Gus that he can get him home safe and is disapproving when Gus tells him his plan to frame Nacho instead.

But both Pilate and Mike, against their own judgment, agree to play their part. Pilate has Jesus flogged, just like Mike beats Nacho. And Mike agrees to be the one to pull the trigger, ending Nacho’s life. (That Nacho ends his own life instead is an interesting departure from the usual narrative.)

Pilate famously washed his hands and declared himself “innocent of this man’s blood.” Mike also washes his hands. It’s “not his call.”

Is he less guilty than Gus for Nacho’s fate? That’s hard to say. Gus would have found someone else to do it if Mike refused. Mike considers it his responsiblity to ensure Nacho’s death is as clean as possible. He didn’t have a choice. This was the honorable thing to do. Wasn’t it?
