Mary strolled up to the table, occupied by a single man, and took the seat opposite him. After some discussion with Jude, Mary decided that making a proposal to this man was worth a shot. Normally sheâd have someone else do it, but their tactics were largely intimidation-based, and Mary wanted to make her own judgements about this man and his abilities. If things went south, Mary could always remind him how much Jude depended on her. And if that didnât work she could always arrange an accident, although that android of his would prove difficult.Â
"Awful tea, isnât it?" She said smoothly, looking him straight in the eye.
Don't.Â
He'd seen this before. That undying determination and amazing intelligence sparkling in her eyes. Why, he had even been a victim of it, when he was nothing but an ensign; people acting like they're one's friends and then turning the tables. Friendliness left forgotten. All very tiresome. The result would be the same if someone bothered with false smiles or chose to go straight to the point. Perhaps it was a matter of dedication to the job, Randolph did not know.
Perhaps he was mistaken in his assessment.
So he met her gaze. If she had expected he'd be squirming beneath her steely stare she was in for a huge surprise. His eyebrow shot up, an acknowledgement, nodding as he sipped again at the drink. "You want something, don't you."
