Oc Portugal
Hi, it’s the OC Portugal admin from a long time ago. Since then, I’ve revamped my OC twice and is still working hard on it. Appreciated if you can check out the newer version!!
Image: http://trevo4folhas.tumblr.com/post/27832560672/hima-style-portugal Country: Portuguese Republic (República Portuguesa) (Used to be Kingdom of Portugal ((Reino de Portugal) 1139-1910) which ended with the 5 October 1910 revolution) then First Portuguese Republic ((1910-1926)) then the corporatist authoritarian Second Republic, Estado Novo ((New State) 1933–1974)) ended with Carnation Revolution. It was the longest rule of dictatorship in European history) He became democratic nation on 25th April 1974)
Capital City: Lisbon
National flower: Lavender
Human name: José Álvaro ((Given name)) Silvia (Surname meaning ‘woodland’) (José- Spanish/ Portuguese form of ‘Joseph’ Hebrew name meaning ‘God will give’. Álvaro - Spanish, Portuguese, Galician male given name, Old German origin- meaning ‘all guard’) (Mother’s surname first, then father’s surname)
Other names: Luso (Portugal), Porto/Port (Town in Northern Portugal, called Portus Cale by Romans, meaning Port of Cale. It gradually evolved into Portugale and then Portugal), Tuga (Originally a derogatory term used by his African colonies during Portuguese Colonial Wars ((1960’s – 1974)) Ironically, it’s now used by the most patriotic Portuguese)) Zé (Shortened form of José) Once known as Ophiussa by Ancient Greeks. Porty. Potty.
Age: Is the oldest European nation, and one of the oldest in the world. At least 874 years old (Since 1139, as of 2013) First humans arrived 30,000 years ago if you want.
Human age: 27 (oldest European nation. Does Turkey count? - Greece is 26, England is 23, Spain is 25, France is 26.)
Birthday: 10th June (Portugal Day and also the day of the death of Luís de Camões)
Weight: 80kg (Puts on weight from all that fried food)
Height: 177m (Netherlands is 190cm, Spain, England and France are all 175cm, both Italys are 172cm)
Appearance: Portugal has wavy dark brown hair that is just a bit longer than France’s. He usually ties it in a low ponytail but since the Estado Novo period, he has cut it short (But he grew it out after Carnation Revolution).
So he cut it short for a while but then he let it grow out again?
He has blue eyes and is a fairly tanned individual. Portugal has a scar over his left eye, most likely from a past battle. He and Spain look very similar, being brothers, which causes a bit of confusion at times. Spain always looks happy whereas Portugal usually sports just a half smile and gives off a gloomier look. He has isn’t very muscular, but has a nice build. He used to be more fit, having to run around in battles and stuff, but now he’s slacking off. Clothing he wears throughout his life varied. When he was under the care of Rome, Carthage and Caliphate of Cordoba, he would’ve served as a servant to them, so usually dresses like one. After he gained independence, he still dressed quite humbly and lower classed, not servant standard, mind you, he’s sick of being treated as a slave. He begins to dress more richly as the Kingdom of Portugal’s economy grows and becomes richer, and following the Portuguese Renaissance, he is able to afford even finer clothing. Apart from everyday clothing, he would have his military uniforms which he’d wear when going into battle, and also his traditional clothing, which he only gets out on special festivals. He usually wears a shirt, trousers, belt (sash around the waist or strip of leather, depends) boots and a coat of some sort. He wears a cross- Catholics are strongly persuaded to wear them. Considering a ring. Many men of wealth in olden days wore a ring of some sort, so not to seem like a poor guy, he got himself a nice ring to say he’s got money. A ‘memento mori’- remember you will die. Which is unlikely to happen. Pierced ears- only wealthy people could wear these. Languages: Portuguese (official language. Old Portuguese, Old Galician or Galician-Portuguese is the oldest Latin language after Occitan in from southern France) Mirandese (regional language) alot of English, most of Spanish and Galician, bits of French and Italian (Romance languages -Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and Romanian- were developed from Vulgar Latin spoken by Roman soldiers and merchants during conquest between 3rd-1st century BC. So all VERY similar) He’s forgetting his Latin and picked up a bit of: Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, and others through trade, but only knows basic stuff and is not good at them
Religion: Roman Catholic (Predominate religion)
Family: Spain (brother) ((The rest are all related)) Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland (related via Celtic blood- Celt Iberians. Not England because he’s Anglo-Saxon) Greece (related via Ancient Greek and Phoenicians) N.S. Italy (related via Ancient Roman conquest) Some Germanic blood (France included-the Franks) from Germanic ‘barbarians’ (Gothic kingdoms), North African blood from Moorish invaders and Carthage
Personality and interests: Portugal is a happy young man who has a very easy going and mild personality. He’s a very generous guy and always means well. He may seem a bit melancholy at times but he’s still a very optimistic person who is quite talkative. Portugal is a very formal and traditional person. Some reckon he’s too old fashioned but he’ll insist that it’s being polite. He is a very mature person and has a very strong sense of responsibility. He’ll do his best to teach his underlings, but he’ll still be strict with them. Portugal is a family-oriented person mostly with his ex-colonies. He’s very protective of them and despite them constantly disobeying him and fighting him, he’ll fight for their return. He sees himself as a more fatherly figure to his colonies but they’ll just call him ‘big bro’ He tends to be brutally honest and highly sarcastic, which sometimes may be mistaken as being rude. He’s a very proud person (makes him easily offended), and still yearns for the ‘golden years’ which often causes some nostalgic moments. Portugal is quite a hard working person. He’s more of a pacifist and a bit dense at times. He wants to stay on everyone’s good sides so usually remains neutral.
Historically speaking this seems to be untrue, Portugal has entered quite a few conflicts at the risk of pissing other countries off.
He’s a bit of a lady’s man, and would never hurt a lady. Like his brother (and other romance nations), he tends to flirt alot. He’s not very assertive and takes time to make decisions. He’s quite passive and often uses that to insult people he dislikes, indirectly. He’s very cooperative, and easily dragged into things. So he’s not the best leader.
Portugal’s hobbies include playing his guitar, singing, fishing, reading and just chilling out with Spain, England, France, Netherlands, Belgium or sometimes his colonies. He is quite dept with his hands, and also does some embroidery or woodworking. He calls himself a gourmet and is quite a skilled chef. He’s a fierce supporter of football and loves playing it. When he’s playing football, he’s not going to let anyone win. Portugal enjoys being by the sea, as he grew up near the shore most of the time. To be honest, he enjoys being alone most of the time. He doesn’t really want to get involved into other nations’ businesses- he has his own economic crisis and has faced consequences when he was dragged into wars by Spain or England. He’s very persuasive and can get his way around most things. He’s also a very curious person, which sparked some of his adventures around the world. He’s been smoking since tobacco was discovered in the early 1500s but he doesn’t get cancer, sillies. He’s not the best with technology- he finds them a bit hard to use and gets easily frustrated by them.
Relationships Greece- The two are very close friends from young - Ancient Greek and Phoenician navigators settled in parts of Southern Portugal. Greece wants Portugal to join the Mediterranean Games. Let’s say Greece picked up the habit of calling Port, Ophiussa.
Russia- The two began of trading with each other but soon ties were severed and the two had several fights but Mother Russia made up for it da? Overall their relationship is a very strained one and Portugal finds him a bit creepy.
нет.
Spain- They never really liked each other, despite growing up together. Portugal thinks Spain is rude, too full of himself and too loud, and Spain reckons he is too sad and reserved and is an anglophile (and hates the fact that he hates tomatoes and there is a perfectly good reason for that ‘tomate’ is slang for balls in Portuguese). This is because Portugal tends to be ‘forgotten’ and the Iberian Peninsula just referred to as Spain and the previous wars. People often tend to confuse Portugal and Spain’s cultures e.g. Portugal does not have siestas and is kinder at bullfights. Portugal often gives Spain the cold shoulder who in turn tries to get him into as much trouble as he can. But despite them constantly calling each other names, they still know that deep down in their hearts they still love each other: cue the fucking “Daawwww”ing. Portugal became independent from Kingdom of Galicia in 25th July 1139 after the Reconquista. In 1578, Spain and Portugal were married together as the Iberian Union until in 1640, Portugal rebelled sick of having raised taxes and being involved with Spain’s battles. In the 18th century they had many fights and in 1762 Spain tried to invade Portugal unsuccessfully. In 1806 Spain teamed up with France and the two invaded Portugal somewhat successfully but France turned the tables by taking over both their houses. Spain and Portugal allied with each other to drive France out of their homes and England joined in hoping to beat France up, the battle dubbed the Peninsular War. After the war, they lost control over their South American colonies and started fighting again. During the WWII Spain and Portugal remained neutral though Spain was against Germany while Portugal was friendlier with him. After the war, they seemingly became more isolated. While the other European countries gave up their colonies around the world, Spain and Portugal refused to give them up. There was little co-operation between the two when it came to defending their colonies. In the modern day, the two are much friendlier than they were and have learnt to cooperate but still debate over who owns Olivenca.
France: They are very good friends but France has invaded Portugal a few times in the past (Peninsular War- France wanted Portugal to boycott England but he’s like “Nup, not doing that”) but still share strong bonds and are generally excellent political buddies. They enjoy talks about the old days (and a glass of wine), though Portugal is a bit touchy on the topic of the Peninsular War which caused around 40 to 50 thousand deaths in 1810. He doesn’t mind France hitting on him (They hit on each other all the time)
Ukraine: Portugal recognizes her as an independent country after the fall of the Soviet Union and are pretty good friends. There are many Ukrainians living in Portugal. He hits on her a lot. I’m not even sorry. “Ukrainians are very similar to the Portuguese,” pronounced Enrico from Denmark. “You are both very friendly kinds of people and constantly hugging. And you have a similar sense of humor. That is why we like you so much!”
Enrico who? What?
Estonia: Portugal recognized Estonia as a republic but never recognized the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union. Portugal re-recognized the Republic of Estonia on 27 August 1991.
Finland- Portugal recognised Finland’s independence on December 19 1919.
Turkey- had several fights over the Spice trade but are good friends in the modern day.
These three really aren’t that relevant.
India- the two met in 1947 and had quite a good relation but in 1950 their relationship started falling apart when Portugal refused to give up his enclaves in Goa, Daman and Diu. In 1955, the two were no longer friends. In 1961, India led armed forces to end Portugal’s rule in Goa. Portugal refused to recognise India’s sovereignty until 1974
Indonesia- In 1999, Indonesia and Portugal restored diplomatic relations, which were severed following the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975.
China- The two aren’t very friendly with each other, having quite a nasty history. Portugal has been trying to establish trade between the two but since China wouldn’t cooperate, Portugal enslaved his people as slaves for profit. Portugal conquers Malacca (Malaysia) in 1511 but China attacks him and forces him to free Malaysia. In the 1800s China massacres the Portuguese pirates dubbed the Ningbo Massacre, in the 19th to 20th century Portugal takes over Macau but in 1999 Macau was returned to China, in the modern day, China and Portugal’s ties are more about economy.
North Korea- good relation because of some trade and Macau
America- Portugal was the first neutral country to recognise America as independent after the Revolutionary War, in the modern day the two are quite good friends. America did bomb Macau when he was found to be supplying aviation oil to the Japanese.
Netherlands- Very good friends, but by any casual glance, they’ll seem like they hate each other. They’re a highly competitive pair- Spice trade, football, the association of oranges- and often have arguments but reconcile very quickly. They were always very close friends and trading partners, but since the Iberian Union, their relationship began to go downhill. Portugal was to cut off Netherlands off the Spice trade, since he and Spain were enemies. That’s when the conflicts began. Netherlands naturally wasn’t very happy about that and began attacking Portugal’s trade ships and eventually gained monopoly of the Spice trade as well as control of the East Indies.
N.S. Italy- They have met several times and are quite good friends.
Denmark- The two have fought some wars between (War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714, Napoleonic Wars) on opposite sides, but a treaty signed on the 14th December 1896 established peace between the two nations.
England- The two met on the 1st July, 1147 during the Siege of Lisbon, where the English crusaders helped the Portuguese to defeat the Moorish forces in Lisbon. They became very good friends and the Treaty of Windsor was signed in May 9 1379. The Iberian Union temporarily cut their friendship off until England and Portugal managed to expel Spain from his house. Together, they fought many battles on the same side and helped each other in times of crisis. But nowadays, their relationship isn’t as close as it was in the beginning due to the British Ultimatum and due to England constantly dragging him into various trouble e.g. World War II, Portugal remained neutral but England forced him into fighting against Germany. These days, the two still enjoy a talk about the good old times over a nice cup of tea. Through History, the British have showed an uncanny ability to forget about Portugal, and mistaken it for Spain. To the point where when in war with Spain and allied to Portugal, the British army would attack Portuguese troops because they mistaken them for the enemy’s troops.
Not that hard back in the days tho, especially not when uniforms weren’t standardised and mercenaries were very common.
Also, sometimes both countries would be fighting with armies they had hired from eg. the Habsburgs and the armies would decide how the battle would end before it took place as to not kill too many soldiers.
“Bife”: meaning steak, is a common slur for British people in Portugal. It comes from the color of the “beef”, which is the same as the color of a British person after spending some days in Portugal’s beaches. It is not considered an offensive term, more of a designation between friends.
Ireland- good relationship, trade between Lusitanian and ancient Celts
Japan- another good friend, met in 1547 on the island of Tanegashima. Trade increased between the two for Portugal was the main link between trade of China and Japan until Portugal was banned from entering Japan to trade as he was spreading the Catholic religion. Since then the Dutch took Portugal’s role. But despite that the two still share a good relationship.
His colonies- Overall, he and his colonies maintain a good relationship. He might’ve treated them a bit too harshly when they were under his care, but they still are very close. He was pretty mad when they declared their independences and became aloof to his colonies, until he sucked it up and recognised their independence. Port’s a hard to impress type of man. He sees highly of himself which also gives him high expectations of his colonies. So when his colonies expect praise, they get a bit disappointed in him.
Brazil- the two have had a long history that began when Portugal tried to ‘civilise’ her, but she would always run away. Soon enough Portugal lost interest and was busy with India, Indonesia and China. The discovery of gold and diamonds brought interest to Portugal once again and soon he metropolitinased her. During the time of the Iberian Union, many parts of Brazil were conquered by the French and the Dutch. In 1822 Brazil declared herself independent but it wasn’t until 3 years later when Portugal recognised her as an independent country. In 1894, the Revolta da Armada caused Brazil to sever her diplomatic ties with Portugal but in 1895 the ties were re-established. Nowadays, the two are quite friendly with each other, but seeing to Brazil’s powerful economy and size, she would often tease Portugal.
Macau- Portugal gained Macau into his empire in 16th century. Macau was returned to China in 1999. They’re very close to each other. Port sees himself as Macau’s father, and Macau, having spent so long with him, sees him like a father too. China is not pleased.
East Timor- East Timor was a colony of Portugal for over 400 years. Indonesia invaded East Timor and annexed it in 1976 after East Timor declared itself independent from Portugal on 28 November 1975. The invasion resulted in Portugal severing diplomatic ties with Indonesia. In the early 1990s, the UN still regarded Portugal as the administrative authority in East Timor.
Taiwan- Portugal was first to find Taiwan, and named her Formosa (from Portuguese Ilha Formosa), “Beautiful Island”) She was conquered by Netherlands and Spain.
Angola- Portugal ruled Angola for 400 years, colonizing the territory from 1483 until independence in 1975. Portuguese government recognised the MLPA (People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola-Labour Party) on December 22, 1976.
Mozambique- Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. Portuguese companies are the second largest private investor in Mozambique. In July 2008, Portugal cancelled Mozambique’s remaining debts to Portugal, estimated at US$ 393.4 million, accumulated from independence until 2005.
Trivial: • Still refers to some ex-colonies as “my, mine”- he’s a very possessive person • Slightly blurred vision- from constantly looking into the sun to find position of ship during period of exploration. • He has a hoarser voice from constantly shouting out instructions on the ship and yelling at his colonies when they misbehave, which is all the time. He’s a yeller. • He used to live in Lisbon, that is, until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. He then moved to Oporto in Northern Portugal. He was lucky when his place wasn’t attacked by the French during the Peninsular War in 1810. • Not bad in fencing - rapiers- and usage of other swords. Not the best in hand to hand combat, vision is not the best, but he’s alright in shooting (muskets, carbines, rifles whatever etc.)- Wellington praised the Portuguese riflemen’s (Caçadores) good shooting during the Peninsular War. (Wellington called Portuguese riflemen the ‘fighting cocks’ of the army) • The scar came in during an obscure battle from the time during the Reconquista. Because he looked like a little kid of 15, the big men with big beards and hairy chests are laughing at him and being all “Go back to yo momma, Yo little girl” So he wants to prove himself better than them. So he runs onto the battlefield too recklessly, gets the cut across the face and comes back being all “Whoops, need to be more careful” But it turns out most of the bullies were killed in battle so he’s happy./shot • He is a hoarder. He keeps a lot of junk in his house. No attic cleaning day yet, he likes his shit.
Being a legitimate hoarder is something very bad and is linked with several mental illnesses. A hoarder keeps useless stuff and can’t really throw away anything because of their emotional attachment to it, including such things as empty food containers and dead pets.
It’s just plain sad and nothing that should be thrown around lightly.
• He might keep chickens and/or a Portuguese water dog, but he definitely has a black rooster (national animal) by the name of Eusébio. • Bad driver. A Portuguese friend almost killed us. End. Sorry. Not sorry. • Most of his woodwork creations are Roosters of Barcelos (Galos de Barcelos), one of his most renowned symbols. There’s a lot around in his house which gets Eusebio jealous. • Early to sleep, late to wake. He rarely takes siestas. • He might tend to make the loudest rackets during Spain’s siesta times for the sake of it. • He never gets drunk. Neither on beer nor wine. • He speaks Portuguese to Spain- Spain won’t really understand him but Portugal will understand the Spanish. • Fem!Port: Name: Maria. She’s more dominant and more forward character than Port. Being a very tough and strong headed woman, her pride usually causes her downfalls and she is a very stubborn character. She’s a very motherly person too, with a gentle side underneath the fire, but it’s hard to see. Sadistic nature, not like serious blood and gore, but as in smacking people and kicking them off ships. Long dark brown hair and blue eyes. She dresses like any respectable woman of her time. As a result of being so oppressed for so long because of her gender, she tends to have emotional outbursts when pushed to the limit (But only around Port so she can threaten him to shut his trap so he doesn’t blab about how weak ladies are) (Image: http://images.wikia.com/hetalia/images/e/ee/Portugal_sketch.jpg Top one) • 2P!Port: Name: Miguel. An even more sharp tongued and sarcastic (If possible) version of Port. He’s less merciful and more likely to resort to violence. He’s a heavy drinker(BEER). His hair is more orange- Celtic blood- and his eyes are blue. Scar over right eye. (Image: http://images.wikia.com/hetalia/images/e/ee/Portugal_sketch.jpg Third one) • 2P!Fem!Port because why the hell not. Light orange brown hair and blue eyes. Scar over right eye. (Image: http://images.wikia.com/hetalia/images/e/ee/Portugal_sketch.jpg Second one)
Ages through history: Colonisation (by Ancient Greeks, Celts, Iberians, Phoenicians etc.): 4-8 Carthage (575 BC to 206 BC): 8-10 Romans (218 BC–400): 9-12 Barbarian Invasion (Alans, Sueves, Goths) + decline of Western Roman Empire: 12 Islamic Conquest (711 and 788): 13-15 Reconquista (711-1249): 15-16 1249-1418: 16-17 Age of Discovery (from 1418 to 17th century)-: 17-19 Renaissance (1500-1700) to 1800: 18-20 17th century ((Piratey Times)): 20-21 1800 to Estado Nova (19th March 1933): 21-25 Estado Nova to Carnation Revolution (25 April 1974): 25-26 Carnation Revolution to present day: 26-27
History: First peoples Spain and Portugal first appeared with the arrival of the modern humans in Iberia and grew up together on the coasts of southern Iberian Peninsula since 30,000BC. In about 5,000 BC farming was introduced to Portugal. However the farmers continued to use stone tools. Bronze was introduced to Portugal about 2,000 BC. Many Celtic tribes invaded from central Europe and intermarried with local tribes during 700BC. The Celtic people introduced the usage of iron. To the south, the Phoenicians-Carthaginians made several settlements along the coast. Meanwhile by 800 BC the Phoenicians from what is now Lebanon had began trading with the Portuguese. (They wanted Portuguese tin for making bronze). By about 600 BC the Greeks were also trading with Portugal. Spain and Portugal would’ve probably grown up under the care of the Carthaginian Empire until the arrival of the Romans.
Romanisation In 218BC, the Roman Empire first invaded the Iberian Peninsula. Spain and Portugal were lost to Rome, during the Second Punic War (218 to 201 BC) The arrival of the Romans helped the development of agriculture, mining and fishing. During the Third Punic War (149–146 BC), Carthage was ultimately defeated and destroyed by the Roman Empire. The Romanisation of Hispania (Roman name for Iberian Peninsula) took a good 250 years, due to fighting between the local people and Romans. In 193 BC, led by their ruler Viriathus, they rebelled against Roman rule. They fought the Romans for decades and they were only defeated in 139 BC when Viriathus was captured. Afterwards resistance collapsed. However the Celtic tribe gave their name to the Roman province Lusitania. During the 3rd century, Christianity was introduced, and old beliefs were slowly becoming forgotten. The Roman arrival also introduced more advanced buildings, a legal system and a new Latin derived language.
Germanic “Barbarian” tribes 409, during the decline of the Roman Empire, various Germanic tribes invaded. These were the Visigoths, Vandals, Alans and the Seuvi. The Vandals, Alans and Seuvi were later on expelled and Iberia was unified as the Visigothic kingdom. By 585 the Visigoths had conquered the entire Iberian Peninsula.
Islamic rule In 711, the first Muslim Moors invaded, forcing the Visigothic kingdom into the Asturias highlands. In 711 Moors from North Africa invaded the Iberian peninsula. They quickly conquered southern Portugal and they ruled it for centuries. However they were unable to permanently subdue northern Portugal. From there, Spain and Portugal were ruled by the Umayyad Caliphate. The Umayyad Caliphate was greatly weakened by the Abbasid Revolution and was replaced by the Emirate of Córdoba, then the Caliphate of Córdoba. Being non-Muslims, Spain and Portugal were treated somewhat hostilely. The Moorish influence in Iberia covered pretty much all areas. The list covers technology, legends, literature, foods, architecture, place names, language, cuisine, music, arts, sciences, mathematics, secret knowledge, universities, books, electricity, baths, religion, astronomy, astrology, numerology and possibly even more. Under Moorish rule southern Portugal was highly civilised. Town life flourished. So did farming. Moreover the Moors were tolerant. Christians and Jews were allowed to practice their faith - as long as they paid a tax. Meanwhile a little Visigothic statelet slowly grew to the north. By the 11th century it was known as Portugale or Portugal. Portugal gradually became independent of Leon. By 1140 Alfonso called himself king of Portugal and asserted his country’s independence.
You could probably shorten down the personality section a little, at the moment it’s messy and some parts are superfluous. His bad traits are also a bit hard to find.
But he’s pretty good all around, you seem to have done your researched and used it well.
