really quick , everyone , i just want to talk about this scene in bvs . sure , it was a little on the cheesy side , but i just need to come to its defense .. just because i love affleck’s portrayal of bruce so much , and i think there’s a brilliant side to all of this . we all know the death of bruce’s parents has haunted him for years --- he hasn’t really ever coped with it properly , and even in the movie we still get glimpses of him trying to deal with it .. but he doesn’t exactly know how . they were , in a way , his best friends , as well as two of the most important figures he had to look up to . and the fact that he saw them murdered in cold blood right before his eyes at such a young age is deeply traumatizing . basically , he’s always trying to deal with this loss , but it still haunts him daily . let’s also not forget he had a nightmare involving his parents not long before his fight with clark . so .. in a way , his parents are even fresher in his mind . when clark mentions martha , he freezes for a second --- he’s not even thinking about clark in that moment : all he heard was his mother’s name , and it caught him very off guard . he still doesn’t see clark as human in that moment , and he immediately thinks superman knows something about who he is --- and who his parents are . after all , he is not of this world , and bruce does not yet view him as a man , and part of him believes he is taunting him as a way to throw bruce off from killing him . the fact that clark keeps talking about ‘martha’ is only fueling his emotions --- ones he still doesn’t know how to deal with properly . he goes into defense mode , as he now feels vulnerable ( in more ways than one ) due to the possibility that this alien --- this individual who bruce does not see as a man --- knows about his mother , and is now furthering his torment by telling him to save her .. when he can’t . it isn’t until lois runs in and throws herself in front of clark , explaining the meaning of the name to him , that it truly hits bruce : superman is a man . he has loved ones , and he has people who love him --- people who can still be saved . all of this time , he has been going after a man --- a man who has something -- someone -- on this earth to fight for . it’s overwhelming to take in all at once . he had been viewing superman through the completely wrong lens , and to find something like that out right before he was going to kill him ? that isn’t exactly the easiest thing to hear --- or bounce back from immediately . so yes , while that scene seemed cheesy on the surface , it had a lot of meaning in it .
