Saw Manon for only €4! 

The way to do this is to get standing tickets. They have a system in place which does involve quite a bit of waiting but it’s totally worth it! Only having to pay €4 while the people sitting in front paid over €100! (Same view just without the chair)

First of all the website http://www.wiener-staatsoper.at/Content.Node/home/Startseite-Content.en.php has all the information you need to know about what is on.

Once you have found the opera you want to see then you head to the side entrance on Operngasse and go to a sign saying Stehplatz-Kasse | Standing Area. This is where people start queueing for tickets. I started lining up at 3:30pm for a 7pm show and there was already 4-5 people there. But they do give out 500 or so of these standing tickets, just the people in first get the first pick of where to stand. 

There are different sections the Parterre standing room, balcony and Gallery. Each having their perks and weaknesses. I’ve only been the once so from personal experience I can say that getting in early and getting a front row spot in the Parterre section was awesome! Each spot (that has a railing) has a screen below that has the translation of the opera and you can choose from German or English. 

One other thing to note is remember to bring your scarf! This is used to tie around the railing to mark your spot so that you have that to go back to after intermission and after the initial rush to the spots.
