was doing a first aid course and it kept talking about how when applying first aid to a child you have to ask the PARENT for consent and how the child's consent is not enough unless you cannot reach the parent. and then immediately after there was a unit on shaken baby syndrome, and then mentioned abuse as a common source of children getting injured. and they didn't see the irony there. i later asked the instructor what to do about parental consent if the medical emergency was from the parent abusing the child and she was like "you still need to obtain parental consent. you can report the abuse though" not even acknowledging how fucked the whole system is. i hate it here. youth rights now

genuinely I do love katara and sokka as a representation of how Indigenous people can be written in a fantasy setting and it was nice to have something like that in a childhood that was spent consuming a lot of media set in fantastical worlds. however I think if those are the only fictional Indigenous characters you can name, especially like as an adult, you should really make an effort to also engage with stories that portray real Indigenous people and cultures in the real world

actually I’m going to add to this and say something that I know will be very controversial on tumblr but. if the only fictional Indigenous characters you as an adult can name in general are from solely children’s media, you should really make an effort to engage with a broader range of stories that portray real Indigenous people and cultures in the real world. sorry. I know this is a touchy subject. This isn’t meant as an indictment of adults who engage with children’s media overall. I just think those shouldn’t be, like, the only Indigenous characters you’re exposed to. respectfully. you’re going to be missing out on a lot of aspects of our stories, frankly. no matter how deep you think that story tailored to a child audience is. it very well may be. it was still written with children in mind first and foremost. please attempt to broaden your horizons.

and if I’m being really honest? once you’ve finished listing fictional Indigenous characters you’ve heard of? my challenge to you, white tumblr user, is to name at least one work of non-fiction (book, essay, documentary, etc) created by an actual Indigenous person. you’re allowed to use search engines you just have to name one. and then you have to engage with that work, if you haven’t already.

I produce heat. you do too. you will produce MORE heat if you have more fuel to burn. humans have INCREDIBLE fat storage adaptations. it's built in!!!! why wouldn't I take advantage of that??? I love swimming for hours and cycling in the winter and using my brain a lot and having energy left over at the end of a day. and so I eat food. so that I can do these things and have fun.

And yes, I am upset because why does she have to die of AIDS while the Cishet character who also gets it magically has it go into Remission as she dies. Angel is the most interesting character in RENT and she is treated the absolute worst by the writing (part of what happens when a cishet white man writes about the AIDS crisis)

I have no issue with a transfem character being morally flawed, but the issue comes in when she is the only one in the main cast whose actions are read as something negative, and she is the only character who dies of a disease half the characters in the story have, when her character in the source material (La Boheme) doesn't die. It just gives me a weird feeling
