my Own Sanctuary

Here's a summary of what my Nasc 5 Technical paper is all about. My thoughts about the effects of human activities on the Laguna Lake ecosystem. 

The largest lake in the Philippines is the Laguna de Bay. It is the primary source of livelihood of the communities nearby and thus been so prone to pollution and disruption due to various human activities. To describe the interaction of terrestrial ecosystem on aquatic ecosystem, to explain how human activities can affect the lake ecosystem and to find ways how the negative impacts of this human activities could contribute to the lake ecosystem, different places in Laguna were visited by the class.

The interplay between the two types of ecosystems- terrestrial and aquatic were really dominant. For one, the quality of water to which the aquatic ecosystem would have would largely depend on the terrestrial ecosystem. If the people will not take care of the lake, aquatic ecosystem might dry up and die. But this in effect would entail a huge cost for the humans since they use the aquatic ecosystem as source for food and income. 

Pollution is very common to our water bodies but actions such as treating first the wastewater before discharging it to the rivers are being done to combat this problem. In fact the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), the main government agency responsible for restoration, protection and management of the lake’s ecosystem has developed many programs which will make citizens and institutions actively involved in the conservation and protection of the lake.

Of all the episodes of “Biyaheng Totoo”, I chose the episode featuring Barangay Kinamaligan of Masbate in Bicol Philippines. The report was made by Chino Gaston. The main problem of the locality is the lack of clean drinking water plus lack of toilets in each households. The community share only one comfort room which is connected directly to the river systems they have in the place. The barangay has only one water pump they use for their water needs including their drinking water. The people commonly get diarrhea and related illnesses regarding the consumption of the water but they cannot do anything because of the economic situation they have. But what I admired to the people in this place is their optimism that someday the national government could do something about their situation and help them obtain cleaner water for a healthier life in the future.

In relation to our locality, I also live in Bicol, specifically in Albay, but in our barangay we don’t have issues regarding drinking safe water. In fact we drink the water directly from the faucet but I can compare our place to the river systems they have which could probably cause some of the illnesses they are experiencing. There are a lot of wastes (plastic wrappers, bottles, papers, etc.) in the river which makes it smell foul.
