Every waking moment of silence dared to swallow him whole. Misty eyes offered a blurry gaze around the kitchen as the faint sound of Moose panting filled his head. In a matter of a week, his home would no longer be just his. Rather trading off with Mel for a day with the golden boy, he'd been swamped with the task of caring for another human being while struggling to do the same for himself. The more he thought about his mother's list, the more his lungs clamped shut.
If it weren't for his palm falling flat against the cool marble top of the island, he would have crumbled to the floor as he'd been when she arrived. He was torn between anger and sadness, the tango of emotions sending his mind into overdrive. Everything he'd known was now painfully irrelevant. There was no retirement plan — no room for the fun he wanted to have without the pressure of the league coming down on him.
Her voice pulled him from his thoughts, hand snapping back to his side as he stood an inch straighter with a forced smile, one that faded as his gaze caught hers. The redness in her eyes and the slight puff in her cheeks was a giveaway of what had happened in the bathroom, but he couldn't blame her. If anything, he was envious of her ability to let something out.
"Couch is good. I'll pull the coffee table closer." He'd sneak Moose a few pieces of food and hope that whatever they found on tv was enough to distract him, if even only for a long enough period for the man to shovel in food before the harsh reality washed over him again. "It's a list," he hummed, voice weaker than he'd expected, "for Rowan. Just the stuff I'll need before she gets here. I went back and forth on telling her I couldn't do it, but I will. I am," he corrected in a soft rasp. "I have to."
the words crashed into her, Rowan. the list was for Rowan. why hadn't she even thought about Rowan, that everything for her was just gone and both her parents were gone. she fell onto the couch with a thump, her words could barely come out without sounding dumb. "no that makes sense." he was the one that would step up to do so it wasn't shocking to her. just shocking that everything has changed so drastically for both Rowan and him.
"can I see it?" she asked with a small voice. from seeing her sister go through the process, it would take months to gather everything a baby would possibly need. but knowing Henry, he would pick it up easily enough. "How much time do you have?"
"I know. Sometimes I can't think of anything else." She tried for hours to distract herself but she'd end up crying or having to sleep in the hope of feeling better when she woke up. "Thank you, you're so sweet." She smiled at her while her arms wrapped around her figure.
melody held on to the hug longer than she anticipated to, letting a small tear linger as she wiped it off before the other could pull back. she let out a deep breath as she played with her friend's hand. "you know what we do need? something that wine and cheesecake can't really fix."
She managed to flash a grin up at the other, the paperwork in hand suddenly feeling as if she were onto something. "My boss didn't think I had enough going on for me already, so he decided to pile on a little more. It was thoughtful of him," she exhaled, sarcasm lacing her voice. Good intentions or not, she didn't need him looking out for her.
"Not the kid's chair. Desperate times, desperate measures, right? Save yourself from having to do it again," she offered once more, a nod going to the chairs on the other side of the table. "Besides, it saves me from reading any further into this."
"maybe send him a nice thank you card." she could see that the other was overworked. "because god knows he couldn't do all of this himself right?" she knew how many times her own boss had sent her ridiculous tasks and he wouldn't dare ask his anchor or producers for.
"my knees thank you, i don't know how they've recovered from last time." she finally sat down making sure none of the papers were anywhere close to her tea out of fear of spilling. "this might be a dumb question but do you enjoy what you do?" she asked with a soft smile still placed on her lips.

It had been a gift for his birthday last year, so you could say Kingston took his sweet time to book this wine tasting experience. His 56th birthday was a little more than four months from now, so it was safe to say that he was probably going to buy some bottles for the 2023 celebration, with his 2022 gift.
As a wine connoisseur, Kingston always made sure he brought back home a souvenir to store in his cellar. Today would be no exception. Gathered around a giant wooden table, you were all invited to have a sip of the first bottle of the evening. A burgundy wine, imported directly from France last summer. “You should make it twirl a little inside the glass first.” he whispered to you, before winking, and smelling his glass. “Deep color, nice smell of blackcurrant, well-balanced. This bottle could age very well.” The fifty-something declared, seeking approbation in the teacher’s eye. Soon enough, other bottles came, and Kingston either kept to himself, or tried to discern the notes of the elixirs that were served. Of course, spitting everything out would be a crime, wouldn’t it ? Tell that to Kingston’s laughs, that were coming a little too close to each other now, or to the bottles that kept going inbetween all the guests. “I don’t think the French meant for Americans to get tipsy on their fancy wines.” Kingston laughed.
melody tried her best to imitate his actions, the smell of wine touching her sense further reminding her of the expensive price tag. "what does the swirl really do?" she asked still matching his actions. the experience of wine tasting was given in the last holiday party which allowed her to partake in the lesson. wine was never her go to, raised on solid liquor in the deep of texas but she could learn more about the bottles that we sitting on her kitchen counter.
her lips bit back in shyness as she set the glass back down. "i just smell grapes. old ones just really fancy ones maybe?" she said with a small laugh as she took a small sip.

Where did he even begin? He wanted nothing more than to open up to the one person who could eve begin to understand his loss, but what were words going to do? It wouldn't take away the pain that had burrowed into his chest and made a home there. It would't bring Sarah back into existence, and it wouldn't change the fact that he wasn't ready to take on the responsibility of a tiny human he loved more than life itself. "She loved you too, Mel." It was the least he could offer the woman who'd came into the family as one of their own. Had he not been so caught up in his own shock and disbelief, he would have wanted nothing more than for her to have been there for the attempt at closure everyone had needed.
No fear flooded his system at the thought of her having free range to his phone. Even when they were together, cheating claims aside, he wouldn't have minded her going through it. Whether it was searching the lyrics to a song he'd heard on the radio, or a quick view of the weather, there wasn't much else to see. Since retiring, the most excitement he'd had was a one night stand with a woman he couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever see again.
He could hear the sound of glass being moved from one place to another, her delicate touch noted with a brief smile. She couldn't help herself, could she? "I'm not even going to ask what you ordered. We'll call it a surprise," he countered smoothly. Maybe in twenty minutes he'd have an appetite, but even if he didn't, he doubted she'd give him the option of passing up yet another meal. The least he could hope for was that she'd let him wash it down with what little Jameson he had left.
The list. How had he nearly already screwed up something so simple? "Yeah, I didn't mean for it to end up on the floor. Thanks." Pausing in hopes of taming the ache in his chest, he turned towards her and tilted his chin upwards. "Second door on the left. If you need anything, just help yourself." The guest bathroom was stocked with the essentials that no one ever used, except for on the rare occasion where his family visited. "And no rush. I'm not going anywhere."
"no worries, it happens." her words were said over her should with the hope of normalizing simple acts of forgetfulness, like anything would even be remotely the same now that Sarah was gone. she was surprised more things weren't on the floor scattered to be eventually be picked up when he was ready for it.
melody closed the door behind her, letting her back hit it with a small thud as she finally felt the pain of everything coming down on her. her mouth covered her sobs, he shouldn't haven't to hear it but she allowed herself to fall down to the bathroom floor and just let the emotions run through her. Sarah was gone, that pain was almost palpable and she could do nothing to take that pain away from henry. she let the first few tears drop getting lost in her damp clothes until she was able to control herself and her breathing.
part of her felt uncomfortable going through his bathroom hoping to find a towel to dry off her hair and wipe away the tears. but of course a creature of habit, she found them pretty quickly she took a minute to gather herself before sliding on his clothes and he had been right, they swallowed her up but she did her best to look better than how she showed up to his door.
"thank you." she muttered as she came back out, a shyness covering her in a way that she hadn't experienced with him since college. "food should be here soon, did you want to eat here or on the couch?" she asked pointing the countertop, her eyes glancing down at the paper once again. "are you sure you need this?"
Hospital life could be a little bit to much at times. He could handle it all normally and was used to working on little or no sleep most days. He was well used too it by now and really lived off of no sleep. But today was hard another long shift that never seemed to end. With one crazy thing happening after another. He had times he thought he had be on one of the tv medical dramas with how wild it could be. It started off fine and normal but it kept going. Nothing really that crazy like lot of people hurt or anything. It was just a lot of people being foolish for the most part.
He sighed as he was at last on a well needed break that seemed to be hours late. He was over with all the crazy people today being foolish and needed to get away. So he went out and stopped at the coffee cart outside the hospital and grabbed a coffee and muffin and walked across the street to the park that was across from the hospital. Put there to help people be able to relax and enjoy nature. He quickly went to a open bench he sat down a moment drinking a lot of his coffee before he sat it down next to him and laid down. "lyudi idioty" he mumbled to himself in Russian. He still had good accent on him even more when he spoke Russian.
He just needed a break, a breather and be away from it all. He did still have his scrubs on but had his jacket on over them. Not to really cover him up, it was just cold out and he rushed.

melody, unlike the rest of seattle, enjoyed the constant rain and the never-ending cloud cover. and her work schedule allowed her to take breaks throughout the day that she wouldn't usually get to if she worked a 9 to 5 like most people. she enjoyed the time as her sense picked up the smell of the last nights rain and gave her ample amount of space for Moose to run around as much as his leash would allow.
her eyes glanced up at tallon, the park bench seeming somewhat lonelier that she had hoped for. "her, are you okay?" she asked genuinely, she didn't know whether to sick or just allow him the space that he might have wanted.
"I've heard that too. It was a twitter thread and now i'm tempted to try it but I need to figure out where these people live and I've got no idea how to google that shit." She wasn't the most technological person. "I wonder if there's like an inventory or does facebook ask for how much you make yearly?"
"I'm doing you a favor?" She didn't know why but it didn't matter because she got what she wanted in the end of it. "It feels like you know too much about me now so I guess you should tell me what's going on in your life."
"you're getting rid of these pods faster than I could ever before they go stale and have to throw them away." she clarified not really caring about the extra cost but rather the fact it was finally getting used. "I know that you have a hankering for coffee and that you dont' take it with any flavoring. i don't know if that's knowing too much."
How was he supposed to take care of another when he couldn't even take care of himself? He wondered if the lack of sleep he'd gotten was written so blatantly across his features, or if the sadness that settled in his chest carried through every word he spoke. "You loved her too," he countered with a barely-there breath. He wasn't fool enough to believe that she and Sarah had cut off contact after the divorce. He'd asked his sister plenty of times how the other woman was doing and Sarah had never been shy about her honesty. She's doing fine considering the facts, asshole. In the end, they were thick as thieves. She didn't agree with how he carried himself after the loss of his marriage, but she never stopped loving him and she never stopped showing him support.
"Fine." If that was the stubborn game she wanted to play, he'd do so for her sake and nothing more. "Just order something? Whatever you want. Use my phone." Paying for a quick meal was the least he could for her, even if she'd probably argue against that too. "It's on the counter. You'll have to turn it on. There's no passcode." Even if there was, she probably could have figured it out anyway.
Without giving her much of a chance to argue, he brushed past her and down the hallway towards his bedroom. Every step felt heavier than the last, but the sound of pattering paws behind him offered a dose of comfort he'd desperately needed. "You can't let me out of your sight, can you?" He forced a small grin to his mouth as the overly excited dog jumped onto his bed. He winced at the thought of wet dog smell staining the sheets, but it wasn't as if he'd been sleeping there anyway. The couch and kitchen floor had been the only places he'd managed to find an ounce of solace.
After a few moments of digging, he'd managed to find a change of clothes for her. A shirt and a pair of joggers that would swallow her whole, but it was better than the wet clothing clinging to her frame. "Come on," he called out, watching as Moose lifted up from the bed and trotted out into the hall. He followed behind slowly before he'd reached the kitchen. "This is the best I could do," he exhaled as he placed the clothing atop the counter. "Did you get something ordered?"
“I did.” She replied back softly. The way the words were said in past tense made her heart break even more. She still couldn’t understand how they were speaking about Sarah like she was now gone. It was an awful position to put his sister in after the divorce, the reminder that they were no longer har family made the ache of leaving Henry that much worse. Sarah never once spoke badly about her brother to Melody, it was unspoken rule as well an invisible string that still linked the two until it dwindled out.
“Fine” she replied back, she wasn’t going to fight him on who was paying or what to get. It all seemed meaningless when he had just lost someone so important to him. Her wet shoes made a horrible sound as she moved towards his kitchen, making a mental note to come back and wipe down any small puddles off the hardwood floor. Her fingers moved over his screen smiling at the background of him and Moose. He was right the moment the phone turned on, a flurry of messages came in and would make the phone vibrate like no other. She pushed past them trying to find an app to order and punched in items she knew he would eat. Comfort food was all she could think would help right now and she gave in and paid with the card on file. Once she got the delivery time, she went back to turn off his phone. If he was ever ready, he could go through all the messages and notifications he had gotten but right now wasn’t the time.
Her eyes glanced around at the kitchen area, it looked like how she expected to find it. Part of her wanted to clean up, the other part not knowing if she intrude even further in his place. She had to remind that she was a stranger to his place, a guest if even that. Her hands reached hesitantly for the bottle that laid out on the floor, the clear culprit of the alcohol on his breath. She picked up a couple glasses with still evidence of liquor in them and moved them towards the sink.
Her ears picked up on the small pitter-patter coming back into the room as she picked up the wadded-up paper, immediately thinking it was just trash. “I did, it should be here in like 20 minutes.” Her eyes glanced down at the clothes, the pair of joggers she had bought for him years ago. She was surprised he still had them but said nothing. “This is fine, thank you.” Her eyes glanced down the hallway hoping for directions. “This way right?” She took a step before remembering the paper. “Oh did you need this? I was just cleaning up. Didn’t want to throw it away if it was important.”
It shouldn't have been a surprise that she knew, but hearing her acknowledge the loss aloud made him sick to his stomach. There were times where he'd pushed the truth aside; had considered it nothing more than a bad dream, but seeing the distress written all over her features was proof that it was all real. "I'm sorry I didn't reach out. I just, I got so caught up with everything. I turned my phone off for the most part," he explained, a nervous hand rising to brush against his untamed scruff. It was a nervous habit he just couldn't kick.
He watched as Moose settled into the home as if he'd been there a thousand times already. Wet paw prints stained the wooden floors, but they'd dry with time. "I'm not really hungry." The retired hockey player cleared his throat, dark hues settling on her soaked frame. "Do you want some dry clothes? You can't stand around like that. You'll end up sick, Mel."
she lifted her hand to stop him. he didn't owe her or anyone any explanations. "you don't have to apologize, that was probably the best idea." she gave him a soft reassuring smile, it was all that she could offer but knowing the small tics were still the same when everything else was just so different now. she wanted to ask how his parents were doing but she couldn't form the words and didn't want to push him any further than he already was.
"please don't worry about me. i'll be okay." her teeth chattering gave her away until she finally relinquished a nod. "I'll agree to the clothes if we can get you something to eat." it was the only leverage she had in this situation where he might agree. "I can doordash you something or make you something? yeah you might not be hungry but you have to eat."

But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs The smell of smoke would hang around this long 'Cause I knew everything when I was young I knew I'd curse you for the longest time
She didn't know what were tears and was the rain that ran down her cheeks. "Couldn't really drive here." she explained as she took a deep breath. what could she even say to him in that would make this situation better? nothing. there was absolutely nothing that she could say. the whiff of alcohol was clear as day but she couldn't judge him for it. she wouldn't have even judge him if he hadn't open the door for her.
"I heard what happened. Caroline told me." she wouldn't make him repeat the whole thing. that probably would have been torture for him. She stayed in the small spot in the entry way as moose went through the house like he lived them. "have you eaten?" she asked in a small voice as she stood shivering as she adjusted to the change in temperature of his place.
"sounds like it was." Gabi didn't know what to say when she was given so little so she shrugs her shoulder. "I had someone die while in surgery. I didn't know them or had a connection but i was checking in on the family so it wasn't a good one."
"I'm so sorry." her hands wrapped around gabi bringing her in for a hug. "sometimes those are really hard, you start thinking about them and their family. I can't imagine." She had to admire what gabi did for a living, to do it every day and keep coming back.
— open starter ; cozy coffee shop.
It wasn't often she carried her work out of the office, both for the sake of keeping her mind straight and for that of privacy, but this was different. Her boss, as much of an asshole as he could be, had dropped off an information pack full of details in one's route to becoming a paralegal. You're more than a secretary, he'd told her, but truth was, she'd already known that. The four person table she'd managed to steal upon a group of college students leaving was far too much space for her to sit solo. So, when she caught the eye of another looking towards the empty seat across her from, she folded over the packet in front of her and cleared her throat. "You can sit," she offered, gaze dropping to the free chair. "If you want. I don't need this whole table to myself. It was just the only thing I could find, so feel free. If you want it, it's yours."
melody sat down in the open chair, making a small opening to set down her tea so it wouldn't be in the way of the papers. "did you kill a small forest here or really itching for a papercut?" she asked as her brown eyes gazed over the files placed over the table.
"I get it. I had to pull up one of the kid chairs the other day to be able to enjoy my coffee the other day." She took a small sip still deciding it was too hot to drink yet.
Dina: wait, really? it isn't even that long! surely, we can cut out someone else's. Dina: can't you tell mother nature to calm down for a bit? Dina: you're fine, i guess it isn't your fault.
Melody: It wasn't my decision! I get that you're bummed. Melody: Hopefully the wind will die down here soon. Maybe it can be moved the 11pm slot?

Delilah wasn't sure if she believed the attempted reassurance; even if she had, it didn't change the present circumstance in which the dog (the aforementioned Moose) was today appearing to be acting like this, and at the expense of her outfit, nonetheless.
"Oh, I'm sure." It wasn't so much the cost to correct this accident as it was the poor timing of it. A glance at her watch showed that she had no time to even try and secure another pair of dry and coffee stain-less pants, the realization earning another sigh from the woman's lips. "No, no, I think you've done enough."
Breathe, Delilah. They're just pants. And it wasn't as if he'd knocked her on her ass, so there was that. It was hard to imagine the animal before her ever having been small, more than living up to his namesake...add that to the list of reasons why Serj would remain the only dog in the Carreño family if Delilah had anything to say about it.
"How old is he?" Another forced smile as she closed and secured her coat. A temporary solution, just long enough to cover the soon-to-be stain and hopefully keep her clients none the wiser.
"Accidents happen." She settled on with a shake of her head, brushing off the offer. "You really don't have to do that." And not just because Delilah didn't want to admit that she did not actually have a Venmo.
melody accepted the curtness of the other woman's tone. she assumed she was pissed and rightfully so. this changed something in her own tone. her back grew straighter and her shoulders moved back. "he's almost 9." she bent down quick to link the leash onto his collar to keep him close. it was clear that he knew he was in trouble but she pat his head before standing back up.
"please I insist." the last thing she wanted was to be in debt to her, she didn't look the type she wanted to owe a favor to. she knew that first impressions were never great to judge someone one but the tone wasn't helping Melody "I can go run to the atm if it's easier and just pull out cash." she wanted to make sure that the woman knew she was good for it. "Sorry, my name is Melody. this is a horrible first meeting but I want to be able to fix it."
"A wedding gift, huh? Did you just send out wedding invitations to your far relatives and get all the presents by mail because I've been fantasizing about doing that but I don't think it would work for me."
Maybe she'd need to recruit more people with richer and bigger families than her own. With her luck, she'd probably get a clay machine which was wicked but not as nice as a coffee machine. "I want a big one." She says, hunting through the selection. "I might get hooked and knocking on your door every day. You're taking a big gamble by letting me close to this thing."
"I've heard if you send out invites to really rich people, they could send you a really nice gift through their secretary, you could try that." her naill dug into her thumb hoping that that would stop any more questions about her own marriage.
"i'll make sure to grab the big ones next time." it was no extra cost on her, the bulk case lasted her longer than she ever intended to. "it's fine, you're basically doing me a favor."
