Guys I know tumblr is western centric but why is everyone radio silent about the Ukrainian elections yesterday

Like I am not saying you’re a bad person for not talking about it just that it’s, like, legitimately one of the most baffling political events I have ever witnessed in my life.

Long story short, Volodymir Zelensky - A comedian with no political experience to speak of decided to run against Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s extremely unpopular and hated incumbent president, working largely off of his role in one popular Ukrainian sitcom called “Servant of the People”, where he plays a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington type character who gets randomly elected as president and fights hard against the corruption to be an honest leader.

Other than piggybacking off of the success of his sitcom, he largely avoided public speeches and interviews, he offered pretty much no policy platform whatsoever beyond extremely vague platitudes, and refused to state specifically what he plans to do if he got elected as president.

So despite the fact that this guy has no political experience, gave very few interviews, held few political rallies, largely campaigned only on social media and has been extremely cryptic about what his actual policy plans are, he managed to win first place with around 30% of the vote on the first round of elections, and won the second round against Poroshenko with seventy-three percent of the vote.

His landslide was so huge that he won over 90% of the vote in some districts.

Imagine being Petro Poroshenko and not only losing this hard, but losing this hard to a television comedian with no real political goals whatsoever

Yeah, i guess if you live outside the uk you might not know about this

@hotfuss you need a tv liscene to watch live tv (meaning anything that’s being shown at a scheduled time on the telly) you also need it to watch literally any bbc programming, even if you do it online on your laptop or phone. It’s the reason there are no adverts on the BBC.

It costs £154.50 that you have to pay every year. If you don’t have one they send you letters constantly telling you they’ll send somebody to your house to make sure you’re not watching tv. So despite the fact I’ve already told them i don’t watch tv (i work 40 hours a week and just watch youtube) they’ve started sending me the letters again so I have to call them up.

Oh and apparently they can track what devices you have in your home and tell when you watch their content without a liscence.

It’s very dystopian over something so fucking stupid, on the bright-side I did find this fake ad while trying to find the buildboard picture

Wait wtf. What if you watch a British show on Netflix or something? Or do they not show those shows on Netflix over there? Can you be fined? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WILD TO ME! I can’t believe all these years we’ve heard British people complain about all the commercials on American TV not once did this come up! The absolute nerve!

at least you get no ads on BBC after you pay that, in Croatia you have to pay that fee (around 8 pounds a month which maybe not a lot to some, but we have a different standard) and it goes straight into HRT (national TV station here) pocket…and you still get ads… AND shitty programs and films. You have to pay that if you have ANY device that can connect to a tv/radio station, whether you’re watching the aforementioned channel or not (so if you have a phone or laptop or car…you have to pay it). They send people to homes and if they can so much as see a laptop or see a car parked on your driveway, they can charge you that fee. It’s crazy but yeah, everyone has to pay for it. I’m in a dormitory now so I don’t pay for that because it’s different but this is still crazy.
