Pretty Little Liars Theory: Charles is Tobyās brother
Previously, I have argued that Bethany Young is A, and also likely to be Jasonās twin sister. Then, I argued that Charles was Jasonās twin brother ā but also Bethany.Ā
Now, Iām going to argue that Charles DiLaurentis is Toby Cavanaughās brother (not twin) ā and that his father is Mr DiLaurentis, and mother is Marion Cavanaugh.Ā
Letās try to take this a little deeper.Ā
Q: Who is Charles? A: The son of Mr DiLaurentis and Marion Cavanaugh
DiLaurentis and Cavanaugh are Jessica and Marionās married names, respectively. Their maiden names have been kept secret from their children, because of everything that followed.Ā
Marion Cavanaugh and Jessica DiLaurentis were twin sisters. Their families were close. But then, Mr DiLaurentis had an affair with Marion.Ā
This drives a wedge between Marion and Jessica, who donāt speak to each other for many years.
Charles is the product of the affair between Marion and Mr DiLaurentis. Marionās next child, Toby, was from her relationship with her husband Daniel. While the boys are very young, Charles plays with Jason DiLaurentis. Mr DiLaurentis allows them to have some contact because he believes that they are brothers; and Mrs DiLaurentis allows Charles to come over because of her own guilt surrounding her own indiscretions.Ā
Q: Why does Charles hate Alison? How is Radley involved in all this? A: He resents that she had the āperfect lifeā. And EVERYTHING goes back to Radley.
So, Toby and Charles are brothers. When Marion has a breakdown while the boys are still young (she has a history of mental illness, remember), Charles is adopted out ā two boys is too much for Marion to handle. Even though Charles is his biological son, Mr DiLaurentis refuses to take Charles in ā this is why Charles hates the DiLaurentis family later in life, and resents Ali.
Charles bounces around from foster home to foster home. The constant instability in his life leads to him developing various personality disorders. Marion Cavanaugh is never mentally well enough to consider bringing him back home, and Mr DiLaurentis will have nothing to do with him.Ā
Eventually, Charles ends up in Radley ā and so does Marion Cavanaugh. Jessica DiLaurentis ā who is upset that her relationship with her sister has deteriorated so much over the years ā becomes a member of the board at Radley, so she can have some contact with her sister.Ā
Thatās where she meets Bethany Young, and starts having an affair with his father. Bethany befriends Marion Cavanaugh and her son Charles, without even knowing they are related. One day at Radley, Bethany witnesses something horrific: Jessica DiLaurentis accidentally pushes Marion - her sister ā out of the window at Radley. They were fighting ā perhaps Marion also knew about the affair between Jessica DiLaurentis and Peter Hastings? ā and it got out of control.Ā
Bethanyās mental strength is further weakened by this shock, and she goes to Charles for support. This is when Charles starts to manipulate Bethany ā he starts conditioning her through forms of mental abuse, just as he started shaping the Liars while they were trapped in his lair.Ā
Q: Who is A? A: Charles (and Bethany as his pawn)
So, both Charles and Bethany were in Radley ā but were relatively safe and harmless. Until, that is, Alison decides to interfere.
Alison knew that something was up with her motherās visits to Radley, and discovers the affair between her mother and Bethanyās father. Ali decides to ādestroyā Bethany, like she has so many other people. Perhaps she doesnāt like the idea of her mother paying so much attention to anyone else (i.e. the horse-riding visits).Ā
Alison gets in contact with Bethany by writing to her, and tells her that she needs to stay away from her mother, or she will makes her life hell. But Bethany decides to strike back. Jessica DiLaurentis has been kind to Bethany ā giving her extra attention, and taking her out of Radley for horse riding ā and that will stop if Alison has her way. And so Bethany breaks out of Radley ā goaded and assisted by Charles, who has realised that Ali is living the life he could have had - and plans to attack Ali. However, throughout the events of the evening, it ends up being Charles who attacks Ali and hits her over the head.Ā
Mrs DiLaurentis sees the whole thing, and decides to protect Charles out of fear and guilt. Partly because she feels guilty that she never assisted her own sisterās son; and and partly because Charles knows she is guilty of murdering his/Tobyās mother.
Charles disappears, but when he realises that Ali is still alive after Mona is caught playing the A Game - he steals the game back.Ā
Q: Is Bethany Young really dead? A: No, Sara Harvey is in the grave.Ā
Bethany Young isnāt dead ā but there was still a body in that grave. And that person is⦠Sara Harvey. Someone, likely to be A, switched their dental records. I canāt think of a reason that both Bethany and Sara would have been introduced as characters, unless they were both going to be relevant.Ā
So who killed Sara? I think Allison and Mona may have accidentally hit her with a car when they were driving Allison somewhere out of town, when she decided to ādieā. (After Ali was rescued by Mrs Grunswald.) Realizing that they needed to replace Allisonās body with someone elseās, Ali dressed Sara in her yellow top and they buried her. Both Allison and Mona have carried guilt over the death ever since.
Bethany Young is pretending to be Sara Harvey.Ā
Q: Why is Bethany Young saying she is Sara Harvey? A: Because Charles has basically brainwashed her.Ā
Either Charles has convinced her to pretend to be Sara Harvey; or he has convinced her she really is Sara Harvey. Remember, Bethany was already in Radley, and in a mentally and emotionally vulnerable position. Charles has been using her as a pawn, and tormenting her ever since. Perhaps she looks just enough like Sara Harvey to pass an inspection by the police. Perhaps Charles even gave her plastic surgery⦠But when she went home, her āmotherā began to suspect that something was wrong, and thatās why she ran away again.Ā
Q: What the frick is up with Andrew then? A: He knows Charles from their years in foster homes.
Andrew is so obviously not A. But The Dollhouse is positioned on his family farm, and he was tapping into the phone call between Melissa and the Hastings parents. Heās involved. But how?
Now we know that Andrew was adopted. Itās possible he met Charles during their years bouncing from foster home to foster home. He became friends with Charles when he was young, and Charles was his only real friend ā he always got bullied at schools because he was the ānewā kid. It means that heāll do anything for Charles, because their bond runs deep.Ā
I think Andrew is the one who showed up to Monaās house, and āfakedā her death before kidnapping her. Remember she was surprised to see that person, as if it was someone she knew?
Pretty Little Liars: Welcome to the Dollhouse Theory - Charles is Bethany
So, what did we learn in Welcome To The Dollhouse? Mona isnāt dead (predicted!), Alison isnāt A (okay, we knew that a few episodes ago ā but predicted!), but I seem to have been proved wrong with my Bethany Young is A theory. Then againā¦
Previously, I have argued that Bethany Young is A, and also likely to be Jasonās twin sister. But what if āBethanyā is actually Charles, and Jasonās twin brother? Very soon after the final episode of season 5 aired, this particular theory started gaining serious traction across social media.
Letās try to take this a little deeper.Ā
Q: Who is Charles? A: Bethany
Charles is Jasonās twin brother, but grew up wanting to be a girl. He wanted to play with dolls, wear dresses, and put on masks. For a while, Mrs DiLaurentis tried to help her son feel accepted ā remember the two yellow dresses that Allison found when she was young? But perhaps due to pressure from Mr DiLaurentis, eventually the parents made the decision to send their son to Radley to be ācuredā ā or kept away from the rest of their family. Which basically makes them horrible, prejudiced, bigoted people who couldnāt accept who their son for who he really was.
Mrs Di Laurentis does, however, become a member of the board at Radley, so she can still have come contact with her child. Once at Radley, Bethany/Charles witnesses something horrific: Jessica DiLaurentis accidentally pushes Tobyās mother out of the window at Radley. They were fighting ā perhaps Tobyās mother knew about the affair between Jessica DiLaurentis and Peter Hastings? ā and it got out of control. But thatās one more thing that Bethany/Charles knows. Once theyāve escaped from Radley, Bethany/Charles is out for revenge because they were horribly mistreated by their family, and have watched their siblings ā Jason and Alison ā grow up and live full lives.
If the āCharles is Bethanyā theory turns out to be true, Iāll be quite disappointed. Transgender people are misrepresented in the media enough as it is, without being cast as psychos who have tortured a group of teenage girls for the entirety of their high school career. But at this stage, I donāt know what else the writers of PLL can really do.
Here are two more theories that argue Bethany is Jasonās twin sister ā which can still pretty much work if we assume that Bethany is Charles. Read this and this.
Q: Who is A? A: Bethany/Charles
Bethany/Charles was unfairly placed in Radley ā but was relatively safe and harmless. Until, that is, Alison decides to interfere.
Did Alison know about Bethany/Charles? I believe that Alison knew that something was up with her motherās visits to Radley, and knew of the existence of a person named Bethany Young. Ali decides to ādestroyā Bethany, like she has so many other people. Perhaps she doesnāt like the idea of her mother paying so much attention to anyone else. Perhaps she finds out about the affair between her mother and Bethanyās father, and assumes itās a current affair ā not one that occurred years previously.
Alison gets in contact with Bethany/Charles by writing to them, and provokes them. She tells them that they need to stay away from her mother, or she will makes their lives hell. But Bethany/Charles decides to strike back. Jessica DiLaurentis has been kind ā giving them extra attention, and taking them out of Radley for horse riding ā and that will stop if Alison has her way. And so Bethany/Charles breaks out of Radley, and they attacks Ali. Bethany is the one who hits Ali over the head.
Mrs DiLaurentis sees the whole thing, and decides to protect Bethany/Charles. Partly because this person is still her child; and partly because they know she is guilty of murdering Tobyās mother.
Q: If Bethany is alive, who is in the grave? A: Sara Harvey
Bethany Young/Charles isnāt dead ā but there was still a body in that grave. And that person is⦠Sara Harvey. Someone, likely to be A, switched their dental records. I canāt think of a reason that Sara would have been introduced as a character, unless she was going to be important. Ā
Both Allison and Mona carried guilt over the death ever since.
BONUS THEORIES
Q: Is Jason already dead, and has Bethany/Charles taken his identity? A: Thatād be fun!Ā Remember when Aria calls out after Jason, but he doesnāt stop or recognise his name? Maybe Jason was already dead (barrel, anyone) and that was Charles even then.Ā
Q: What the frick is up with Andrew then? A: Damned if I know.Ā
Andrew is so obviously not A. But The Dollhouse is positioned on his family farm, and he was tapping into the phone call between Melissa and the Hastings parents. Heās involved somehow.
I think Andrew is the one who showed up to Monaās house, and āfakedā her death before kidnapping her. Remember she was surprised to see that person, as if it was someone she knew? Beyond that, Iām not sure how heās involved ā or how he knows Bethany/Charles.

Interesting!
So I can stop re-re-re-re watching S1 for clues right?
⢠All clues from before season 3 are invalid as not even Marlene knew who A was then ā¢Marlene said sheās only seen ONE correct theory, this means is someone no one suspects (so not Aria etc) ⢠Only Troian, Keegan and Ashley (Spencer, Toby and Hanna) know who A is, this means that with other...
Now trying to figure out why Troian and Keegan would've been told. Connection to their characters?
Susanna and the Elders, Restored (Left)
Susanna and the Elders, Restored with X-ray (Right)
Kathleen Gilje, 1998
Oooh my gosh this is rad. This is so rad.
For those who donāt know about this painting, the artist was the Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi.
Gentileschi was a female painter in a time when it was very largely unheard of for a woman to be an artist. She managed to get the opportunity for training and eventual employment because her father, Orazio, was already a well established master painter who was very adamant that she get artistic training. He apparently saw a high degree of skill in some artwork she did as a hobby in childhood. He was very supportive of her and encouraged her to resist the ātraditional attitude and psychological submission to brainwashing and the jealousy of her obvious talents.ā Ā
Gentileschi became extremely well known in her time for painting female figures from the Bible and their suffering. For example, the one seen above depicts the story from the Book of Daniel. Susanna is bathing in her garden when two elders began to spy on her in the nude. As she finishes they stop her and tell her that they will tell everyone that they saw her have an affair with a young man (sheās married so this is an offense punishable by death) unless she has sex with them. She refuses, they tell their tale, and she is going to be put to death when the protagonist of the book (Daniel) stops them.
So that painting above? That was her first major painting. She was SEVENTEEN-YEARS-OLD. For context, here is a painting of the same story by Alessandro Allori made just four years earlier in 1606:Ā
Wowwwww. That does not look like a woman being threatened with a choice between death or rape. So imagine 17 year old Artemisia trying to approach painting the scene of a woman being assaulted. And she paints what is seen in the x-ray above. A woman in horrifying, grotesque anguish with what appears to be a knife poised in her clenched hand. Damn that shit is real. Who wants to guess that she was advised by, perhaps her father or others, to tone it down. Women canāt look that grotesque. Sexual assault canāt be depicted as that horrifying. And women definitely canāt be seen as having the potential to fight back. Certainly not in artwork. Women need to be soft. They need to wilt from their captors but still look pretty and be a damsel in distress. So she changed it.Ā
Whatās interesting to note is that she eventually painted and stuck with some of her own, less traditional depictions of women. However, that is more interesting with some context. Ā
(Warning for reference to rape, torture, and images of paintings which show violence and blood.)
So, Gentileschiās story continues in the very next year, 1611, when her father hires Agostino Tassi, an artist, to privately tutor her. It was in this time when Tassi raped her. He then proceeded to promise that he would marry her. He pointed out that if it got out that she had lost her virginity to a man she wasnāt going to marry then it would ruin her. Using this, he emotionally manipulated her into continuing a sexual relationship with him. However, he then proceeded to marry someone else. Horrified at this turn of events she went to her father. Orazio was having none of this shit and took Tassi to court. At that time, rape wasnāt technically an offense to warrant a trial, but the fact that he had taken her virginity (and therefore technically ādamaged Orazioās propertyā. ugh.) meant that the trial went along. It lasted for 7 months. During this time, to prove the truth of her words, Artemisia was given invasive gynecological examinations and was even questioned while being subjected to torture via thumb screws. It was also discovered during the trial that Tassi was planning to kill his current wife, have an affair with her sister, and steal a number of Orazioās paintings. Tassi was found guilty and was given a prison sentence ofā¦. ONE. YEARā¦ā¦. Which he never even served because the verdict was annulled.
During this time and a bit after (1611-1612), Artemisia painted her most famous work of Judith Slaying Holofernes. This bible story involved Holofernes, an Assyrian general, leading troops to invade and destroy Bethulia, the home of Judith. Judith decides to deal with this issue by coming to him, flirting with him to get his guard down, and then plying him with food and lots of wine. When he passed out, Judith and her handmaiden took his sword and cut his head off. Issue averted. The subject was a very popular one for art at the time. Here is a version of the scene painted in 1598-99 by Carivaggio, whom was a great stylistic influence on Artemisia:
This depiction is a pretty good example of how this scene was typically depicted. Artists usually went out of their way to show Judith committing the act (or having committed it) while trying to detach her from the actual violence of it. In this way, they could avoid her losing the morality of her character and also avoid showing a woman committing such aggression. So here we see a young, rather delicate looking Judith in a pure white dress. She is daintily holding down this massive man and looks rather disgusted and upset at having to do this. Now, here is Artemisiaās:
Damn. Thats a whole different scene. Here Holofernes looks less like heās simply surprised by the goings ons and more like a man choking on his own blood and struggling fruitlessly against his captors. The blood here is less of a bright red than in Carrivaggioās but is somehow more sickening. It feels more real, and gushes in a much less stylized way than Carrivaggioās. Not to mention, Judith here is far from removed from the violence. She is putting her physical weight into this act. Her hands (much stronger looking than most depictions of womenās hands in early artwork) are working hard. Her face, as well, is completely different. She doesnāt look upset, necessarily, but more determined.Ā
Itās also worth note that the handmaiden is now involved in the action. Itās worth note because, during her rape trial, Artemisia stated that she had cried for help during the initial rape. Specifically she had called for Tassiās female tenant in the building, Tuzia. Tuzia not only ignored her cries for help, but she also denied the whole happening. Tuzia had been a friend of Artemisiaās and in fact was one of her only female friends. Artemisia felt extremely betrayed, but rather than turning her against her own gender, this event instilled in her the deep importance of female relationships and solidarity among women. This can be seen in some of her artwork, and I believe in the one above, as well, with the inclusion of the handmaiden in the act.
So, I just added a million words worth of information dump on a post when no one asked me, but there we go. I could talk for ages about Artemisia as a person and her depictions of women (even beyond what I wrote above. Donāt get me started on her depictions of female nudes in comparison to how male artists painted nude women at the time.)Ā
To sum up: Artemisia Gentileschi is rad as hell. This x-ray is also rad as hell and makes her even radder.
I love art history.
Iām reblogging this again to add something that I also think is important to know about Artemisia Gentileschi. Back in her time and through even to TODAY, there are people who argue that her artworks were greatly aided by her fatherā¦. As in he either helped her paint them or just straight up painted them himself. Hell, there are a number of works only recently (past several years or so) that have been officially attributed to Artemisia because people originally saw the signature with āGentileschiā in it and automatically attributed it to Orazio. So, not only was Artemisia Gentileschi an amazing artist and amazing historical figure, but I donāt want it to be ignored that there are people over 400 years later who still wonāt give her the credit she deserves, just because sheās a woman and obviously women canāt paint like she did.
Pretty Little Liars predictions after 5x13: How the 'A' stole Christmas
Is Mona really dead?
Mona isnāt dead. She was drawing blood for weeks before she died, and faked her death with the help of CeCe Drake ā who is the blonde who broke into her house. CeCe was also the shadowy figure Mona met while Hanna was getting her hair restyled, and the fourth person attending the anti-Alison club meeting with Mona, Jenna and Sydney.Ā
Keep in mind, this theory is inspired by the fact that the showās writers clearly want us to believe that Alison killed Mona ā therefore you have to assume that the exact opposite is true.
It's also likely that Mona had a camera in her roomĀ (she's tech-savvy and paranoid, remember)Ā and her ādeathā was filmed. The footage will likely show CeCe sneaking into Monaās room⦠right before the tape cuts out, I bet. Ā
Is Alison really 'A'?
Alison has been playing the role of A this season ā but she is not Big A. I imagine she orchestrated the explosion in the Toby Cavanaugh house, hacked those tvs that convinced the liars not to go to the police, and has been trying to frame Spencer (if not all the liars) to get herself out of the limelight.
Sheās bad, but sheās not the biggest bad.
So, whatās the end game?
Bethany Young is 'A'
Alison lured Bethany Young to Rosewood all those years ago. Ali had found out about the affair between Jessica DiLaurentis and Bethanyās dad, and wanted to break it up. Remember how her mother had taught her to lie in 5x13 so that her father āwouldnāt leaveā? That has always been one of Aliās biggest motivators.
(While weāre on the topic, I also quite like the Byron Montgomery is Bethany Youngās father theory.Ā It would explain why Eddie Lamb thinks he has seen Aria before ā because heās seen someone who looks like her⦠Her half sister. OR Iām also partial to the Bethany is Jasonās twin theory. Read thisĀ and this.Ā
However, something happens the night that Alison lures Bethany to Rosewood. Perhaps Alison and Bethany fight. Maybe Alison tries to ādestroyā Bethany, like she has so many other people, and tells Bethany that she needs to make her father end the affair. But Bethany doesnāt want that to happen. Jessica DiLaurentis has been kind to her ā giving her extra attention, and taking her out of Radley ā and that will stop if the affair ends. And so she attacks Ali. Bethany is the one who hits Ali over the head.
Mrs DiLaurentis sees the whole thing, and decides to protect Bethany. Why? Partly because she has grown close to her⦠And partly because Bethany Young saw Jessica DiLaurentis accidentally push Tobyās mother out of the window at Radley. Jessica DiLaurentis and Tobyās mother were fighting ā perhaps Tobyās mother knew about the affair between Jessica DiLaurentis and Peter Hastings.
I think Allison DID lure Bethany to Rosewood and her house ā perhaps she visited Bethany earlier that day ā but she did not intend to attack Bethany. She was doing what Ali always does⦠stirring the pot.
Who is in the grave?
Bethany Young isnāt dead ā but there was still a body in that grave. And that person is⦠Sara Harvey. Someone ā A? ā switched their dental records.Ā I canāt think of a reason that Sara would have been introduced as a character, unless she was going to be important.
Both Allison and Mona carried guilt over the death ever since.
Bethany Young is Big A, and still at large.Ā

Orphan Black theories + Season 3 predictions
Some thoughts are finishing Season 2. General Orphan Black theories and predictions for Season 3...Ā
1. Project Leda and Project Castor were aiming to manipulate clones in different ways, after being taken over by DYAD and the military respectively.
I suspect that Project Leda was interested in exploring how the mind could be altered, and personalities influenced; perhaps the differences between the clones arenāt just down to nurture, but nature.
Project Castor, on the other hand, was exploring enhancing the physicality of their subjects ā i.e. creating super soldiers.
2.Ā Deteriorating mental health, as well as deteriorating physical health, are a 'curse' of the clones.
3. The original Leda (girl!clone) and the original Castor (boy!clone) were either sister and brother, or mother and son. See those hyperlinks for some pretty convincing arguments.Ā
4. I donāt know how this theory could work into the above theory, but⦠You know how when Ethan Duncan asks Rachel, āDo you remember, not the memory, but the feeling, how much we loved you?ā (referencing the videos) - she says she doesnāt remember at all?
What if she doesnāt remember⦠because it wasnāt her. The āoriginalā could be Ethan and Susanās child ā the child who they filmed the videos with ā who died at an early age.Ā
5. Mrs S is revealed to have carried a clone (if not Rachel, at least one of them). Might explain her involvement a bit more.Ā
6. Cal is actually a military plant. See more on why his name suggests we canāt quite trust him yet.Ā
7. And Rachel will be alive and have a neolutionist eye, obvs.Ā

Is that Dolly the sheep?
I was wondering if this picture was just randomly there because it is related to cloning of if on the contrary it was carefully slipped on screen on purpose as a subtle suggestion that the cloning procedure used was the same used (after) in Dollyās cloning.
